Rapid bosses under fire after riot - 23/05/2011

Source : Austrianindependent.com

Officials at Austria’s most popular football club are pressurised to be more stringent after hundreds of hooligans invaded the pitch during a crucial league match at the weekend.

Around 200 Rapid Vienna supporters stormed on the green from the west stand at the Gerhard Hanappi Stadium in Vienna-Penzing yesterday afternoon (Sun) after Austria Vienna midfielder Zlatko Junuzovic made it 2-0 in the 26th minute for the away side in the 297th Vienna derby. Roland Linz had scored the opener only five minutes after kick-off.

More than 700 special police unit officers entered the field to keep the hooligans – many of them masked – away from the Austria Vienna fan stand. The rioters hurled rocket flares and firecrackers at the Austria Vienna supporters who threw some of these banned objects back. However, the away team’s fans did not enter the pitch.

Referee Thomas Einwaller revealed today that the players and his team of linesmen were willed to continue the match, but police chiefs stressed they could not ensure their safety and the general security for the majority of peaceful fans at the stadium. The decision not to restart the game was announced to the 17,500 fans at the stadium after intense 30-minute negotiations. Asked what consequences the incidents may have, Einwaller said: "Now the last bit of good reputation Austrian football had in the world is ruined."

Vienna police said two officers were injured in the confrontation with the Rapid fans, adding that three rioters were preliminarily put in custody to have their IDs checked.

Austrian Football Bundesliga officials are expected to put the match result down as a 3-0 win for Austria Vienna. They could also order Rapid to pay a fine. The Green-Whites may be ordered to play the first few home matches next season in front of empty stands or outside Vienna as a further consequence of yesterday’s occurrences which have been labelled as the "derby disgrace" by sport newspapers.

League chiefs are pressurised to make their verdict public shortly as the final round of the current season is set to take place already this Wednesday. Austria Vienna would still have a small chance to win the league for a 24th time. Sturm Graz are considered as favourites to win it after their 2-1 victory against Magna Wiener Neustadt yesterday. SV Ried reached a 2-2 draw against Red Bull Salzburg (RBS), while Wacker Innsbruck beat LASK Linz 1-0. Mattersburg suffered a 1-2 defeat in Kapfenberg.

Rapid Vienna President and former Social Democratic (SPÖ) Finance Minister Rudolf Edlinger said yesterday evening he was "deeply affected" by the actions of some violent Rapid fans. "What happened is a tough blow for every true Rapid fan and a disgrace. It is inexcusable," he told national broadcaster ORF.

It is not the first time Rapid hooligans stormed the pitch, but a match between the city rivals never had to end early before. Yesterday’s incidents – already considered as one of the darkest moments in the club’s history – will certainly heave immense pressure on Edlinger and the club board over their decision-making regarding how to deal with unruly supporters.

Rapid – the country’s most popular club – pride themselves with having the most faithful and loud support among all clubs. The team are accompanied by large crowds of fans wherever they travel. However, an increasing number of fan clubs have been linked to violent incidents at stadiums and public places such as train stations where they regularly clash with supporters of both Austrian and foreign clubs.

Rapid Vienna club bosses banned offenders from attending games in the past only reluctantly, arguing they had to ensure not to fall out with the majority of peaceful members of the most devout supporter groups. It is unclear how many previously offensive Rapid hooligans are kept from attending any games in Austria and if they managed to get into the venues nevertheless. Most identified offenders were only reprimanded or banned for a certain period of time, according to reports.

Rapid set up a CCTV surveillance system at their home ground after violent occurrences some years ago to identify and penalise lawbreakers. Now the country’s sport press call on club officials and the police to be more adamant about yesterday’s scandal than they had been in the past.

Rapid officials explained today they held talks with police chiefs and fan groups in the weeks leading to the match over fears of unpleasant occurrences if the team were to do badly. Some infamous fan associations made clear on the internet they would not hesitate to "become active" if Rapid do not perform the way they expected them to.

The club board stressed yesterday’s incidents have an "immense effect on the club in every regard." They added: "We will make no compromises in taking steps against the offenders."

The Rapid board also promised to "take a new path" in fan group policies starting next season.

Dutch to target 'known' football hooligans - 23/05/2011

Source : AFP

Dutch authorities are to introduce new measures by the end of 2011 to target known football hooligans, but easing restrictions on law-abiding fans, its Safety and Justice Ministry said on Monday.
There has been a decline in football-related violence during the last few years as a result of new laws and stringent measures at stadiums, prompting Dutch authorities to introduce a more targeted approach against hooligans.
"Most football supporters go to matches without causing problems and are confronted with strong generic measures aimed at targeting small groups of hooligans," said Wim van der Weegen, the ministry's press officer.
"Through a more targeted approach, more space is created for well-meaning football fans."
This included an easing of transport rules to and from games, more tickets being put on sale and relaxing physical safety measures at games.
By the end of the year, police from the Netherlands' 25 policing districts will all have lists of the top 10 known hooligans in their respective areas, giving police a database of about 250 known criminals, Van der Weegen said.
"Known hooligans and troublemakers will be targeted including stadium bans, and bans from certain areas on match days," he added.
The action against known hooligans were in line with legislation given the go-ahead by the Dutch parliament last year which empowered local mayors to take swift action, similar to that introduced by Britain in 2000.
Football hooliganism in the Netherlands dates back to the 1970s and has seen sporadic flare-ups in recent years including in 2007 when supporters of Rotterdam's Feyenoord club caused serious disruptions at a UEFA Cup match at Nancy, in France.
As a result, measures to combat violence were taken -- and Feyenoord itself asked for anti-violence football legislation.
The advert was signed by Feyenoord's star players, then national coach Marco van Basten and senior politicians.

Pair of hooligans deported to Serbia - 25/05/2011

Source: B92

Two Serbians arrested and convicted in Italy on hooliganism charges have been deported to Serbia.

Ivan Bogdanov and Nikola Kličković caused unrest in Genoa during an Italy-Serbia official match last year.

B92 learned earlier today that both would be placed in custody once they arrive here.

The First Basic Court's decision to immediately detain them is based on fears that Bogdanović could repeat the offense.

In Italy, he was convicted to three years and three months in prison.

As for Kličković, the guilty verdict against him - sending him to prison for four months, passed by a court in the Serbian town of Smederevo - is yet to become valid.

In Italy, he received a three-year sentence.

However, the Belgrade court said its officers were unable to deliver the Serbian verdict to Kličković at his address, and explained that this would be the reason to arrest him today.

Two more hooligans were found guilty and imprisoned in Italy over the same incident that happened in October of last year. Four others also found guilty but were earlier this year deported from Italy instead of serving jail-time, and received a five-year ban on entry to that country.

Foreign fans accused of kicking off pitch invasion - 25/05/2011

Source : Austrianindependent.com

At least 40 people are facing legal action after around 200 hooligans invaded the pitch in a Football Bundesliga match at the weekend.

Vienna police said today (Weds) 40 people will be prosecuted over the incidents in which two police officers were injured. They added that not all of the offenders who stormed the green 26 minutes into the clash between Rapid Vienna and city rivals Austria Vienna have been identified so far as many of them wore facemasks. Investigators explained they will need a few more days to examine all of the relevant CCTV footage recorded during the pitch invasion which occurred in front of 17,500 fans in the packed Gerhard Hanappi Stadium – and hundreds of thousands of TV viewers – on Sunday afternoon.

Greek and German hooligans are suspected of being the ringleaders of the incidents, according to Austrian newspapers. Some Rapid supporters have had close ties to fan groups of Greek top-flight side Panathinaikos Athens and German Bundesliga club 1. FC Nuremberg for years. The supporters – many of them linked to various violent incidents in Austria and Europe – keep visiting each other throughout the season.

Rapid bosses pledged to reform its ticketing modus to avoid that Rapid fans of the Gerhard Hanappi Stadium’s west stand can pass on their annual passes to others. Apart from charges considering the pitch invasion, Rapid rioters will also face consequences for smashing the windows of the bus of the Austria Vienna squad ahead of the most recent and 297th Vienna derby.

The match was put down in the statistics 3-0 in favour of Austria Vienna. The team – who led 2-0 when the Rapid hooligans took over the pitch – have chances to win the league in the final round tonight. However, a draw may be enough for leaders Sturm Graz to celebrate a third title in the club’s history. Austria Vienna face 2009/2010 season champs Red Bull Salzburg (RBS). Sturm will play against Wacker Innsbruck.

Social Democratic (SPÖ) Sports Minister and Rapid fan Norbert Darabos spoke out in favour of a "radical reaction and solution" to last Sunday’s occurrences which made headlines in sport newspapers across the globe. The minister argued more drastic measures than ever before should be agreed upon to get rid of hooliganism in Austria for good.

Darabos said lawbreakers should be banned from pitches in the whole country for life – a suggestion backed by Rapid President Rudolf Edlinger who said: "We don’t want to see them in our stadium anymore." The former SPÖ finance minister added those who masterminded and headed the pitch invasion should not be allowed to attend Rapid’s away matches either. However, it is Edlinger and the club board who have faced harsh criticism for years from law-abiding fans for allegedly being not strict enough with violence-endorsing supporters of the club which is considered as the most popular football team of the country.

Peaceful fans were outraged yesterday when an Austria Vienna fan group offered their apologies to Rapid’s hooligans for not having stormed the pitch themselves. The Austria Vienna hooligan group argued they did not want to endanger their team’s chances to win the league title. Rapid and Austria Vienna rioters had clashed at train stations and other public places in Vienna many times in the past decades, with the number of incidents on the rise in recent years.

A Rapid Vienna fan club defended the invasion – which could leave the club with a stadium ban and a fine of tens of thousands of Euros – in a statement published online yesterday. The group said the actions were justified as posters crying for change within the team to boost their performance failed to have any impact. The organisation described the invasion of the pitch as "our last cry for help." They added that a majority of supporters of the club founded in 1899 were not satisfied with the team’s displays this season.

Darabos vowed to raise the issue in parliament to introduce more stringent regulations as soon as possible, while People’s Party (ÖVP) Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner suggested stadium crowds should not be allowed to disguise their faces by law. She named England as a possible role model in fighting hooliganism in Austria. Officials in the birthplace of football failed to substantially reduce the number of violent acts inside and outside venues for a long time before harsh restrictions were implemented by MPs.

The Austrian Green Party suggested clubs should lose points garnered in the race for the title if their fans become violent. The right-wing Freedom Party (FPÖ) provoked a public outcry by claiming that Sunday’s incidents do not mean that existing laws must be reformed.

Edlinger said he considered the negative impact on the club’s reputation as more severe than the financial effects the occurrences will have, but consequences in economic regard could be immense as well.

Main club sponsor Wien Energie reportedly urged the Rapid board to sort out its problems with violent fans as soon as possible. The energy sector company has funded Rapid for years. Other major investors are brewery Ottakringer, oil and gas group OMV AG and mobile communications provider Orange. Bank Austria (BA) stopped its financial support for the club a few weeks ago. Erste Group Bank AG (Erste Bank) launched a partnership with the football team shortly after it emerged that BA – one of its key competitors – will not extend its sponsorship deal.

Football Hooligans Rage in Sofia Once Again

Unruly football fans marred once again post-game celebrations, marking the victory of the CSKA Football Club over Slaviya for the Cup of Bulgaria Wednesday evening.

About one hour after the match, a group of CSKA fans clashed with police over the smashing of several cars on a downtown Sofia street. The group has been stopped on their way to the Central Park known as Borisova Gradina. Four people have been arrested and spent the night at the 5th Police Precinct.

"We kept hearing loud noises, as usual after any game, and kept hoping our cars will not be damaged, but it happened," a neighbor told the TV channel bTV.

In addition, two young men have reported with knife wounds, seeking medical help, to the Sofia ISUL hospital and another one, along with a wounded police officer, have been treated at the emergency "Pirogov" hospital and later released.

Malmo FF - Helsingborg IF - 24/05/2011

Source : thelocal.se + i-actu.com

Match called off after fan attacks player on pitch

A firework injured Helsingborg's goalkeeper, who was then attacked by a supporter on the pitch, prompting officials to call off Tuesday night's match against archrivals Malmö FF in the latest instance of football supporter violence in Sweden.

The start of the derby between the south Sweden rivals was delayed by several minutes after supporters for both teams lit fireworks in the stands.

After play finally commenced, it took 30 minutes for Helsingborg's Rachid Bouaouzan to net what would be the first and only goal of the truncated match, giving the visitors the advantage over defending Allsvenskan champions Malmö.

But shortly after Helsingborg took the lead, a firework was thrown from the stands at Helsingborg goalkeeper Pär Hansson, who immediately fell to his knees, clutching his head in pain.

As his teammates went to assist him, a Malmö supporter ran onto the field and managed to throw a punch at the already-suffering Hansson before teammates and police managed to wrestle the man to the ground.

"I just heard a bang and that Pär went down. Then I saw a person simply walk up to Hansson through it all and land a punch; it's just terrible," Malmö head trainer Roland Nilsson told Canal Plus.

In the wake of the disruption, referee Stefan Johannesson called off the match.

"When something like that happens on the pitch that can cause injury to players, there's really nothing to discuss. That's something that the players' association and we referees decided together a few weeks ago," he told Canal Plus after the match.

"We were in total agreement to just call off the match."

Malmö team captain Daniel Andersson expressed his disappointment and disgust following the incident.

"This hurts Malmö FF quite a lot. A supporter should support the team; this just hurts us," he told the local Skånska Dagblaget newspaper.

"I thought that Mälmö FF had come far in working with the supporters, but…"

Trainer Nilsson also voiced his frustration at the behaviour of the Malmö supporters.

"There was no reason to continue the match. There is a lot of frustration in the changing room over what happened…to carry on with crap like this," he told the newspaper.

Conny Karlsson, trainer for Helsingborg, said the fact that his club would likely be awarded a 3-0 victory for the match wasn't important.

"Now something has to be done about these damn maniacs," he told Skanska Dagbladet.

The incident comes just four weeks after an Allsvenskan match between Stockholm club AIK and Syrianska of Södertälje was called off after a firework thrown from the crowd hit and injured a referee.

The Swedish Football Association's disciplinary committee ruled against home team Syrianska, which was leading 1-0 at the time, handing AIK a 3-0 victory. However, AIK was also fined 150,000 kronor ($23,500).

The latest incident in Malmö could result in stiffer penalties because a supporter was attacked on the field by a supporter.

Hooligans jailed over ‘Battle of Waterloo’ - 25/05/2011

Source : Yorkshirepost.co.uk

THREE Huddersfield Town football hooligans were jailed yesterday for their part in the so-called “Battle of Waterloo” with rival Millwall fans last year.

Rival supporters clashed outside the Waterloo pub in Wakefield Road, Huddersfield, before a match and yesterday Judge Peter Benson handed out sentences at Bradford Crown Court.

Violence erupted after buses carrying Millwall followers stopped at traffic lights opposite the pub.

Judge Peter Benson said violent disorder resulted.

Leon Stephenson, 30, of Taylor Hill Road, Taylor Hill, Huddersfield, Danny Melia, 26, of Close Lea, Brighouse, and 38-year-old Andrew Miller, of Brackenhall Road, Sheepridge, Huddersfield, all admitted violent disorder.

Stephenson, who also admitted possession of a snooker cue, was jailed for 18 months. He was subject to a six-year football banning order.

He was seen throwing objects at the rival fans before getting involved in a fight, then using a cue to hit a Millwall supporter.

Melia, also subject to a football banning order, was locked up for 15 months. He was seen throwing an object towards Millwall fans and punching a man.

Miller, who also picked up a snooker cue during the incident and admitted possessing an offensive weapon, was shown throwing missiles. He was jailed for 18 months. The trio were made the subject of new football banning orders for six years.

Gerard Bradshaw, 47, of Greenwood Street, Primrose Hill, Huddersfield, and 39-year-old Lee Donaghue, of Melrose Close, Huddersfield, both admitted affray, and were given prison terms, six months and nine months respectively, suspended for two years in each case.

Nicholas Palfreeman, 42, of Edgeware Road, Huddersfield, was also given six months in jail, suspended for two years, after admitting assisting an offender by driving 15 Huddersfield supporters away from the scene.

Barcelona fans in violent clashes with police

Violent clashes broke out around Barcelona's central square, after an estimated 50,000 fans celebrated the city's football team winning the Champions League trophy at London's Wembley stadium.

Hundreds of the club's fans threw bottles at police as celebrations drew to a close.

Riot police officers were seen in the streets and, according to local media reports, 50 fans were detained.

On Friday, the city centre had witnessed separate clashes involving hundreds of protesters angry about high unemployment and the government's anti-austerity measures.
