Polish police crack down on football hooligans, 21 arrested - 10/05/2011
Source : Warsaw Business Journal
Early on Tuesday morning, Polish police arrested twenty-one individuals in connection with the hooliganism and violence seen at the Polish Cup final between Legia Warszawa and Lech Poznan last Tuesday.
Eleven of the apprehended men are fans of Lech, while ten of them are supporters of Legia.
The men were arrested on the basis of evidence gathered from security cameras, TV broadcasts and films and pictures on the internet.
Police say they are continuing to work on identifying more hooligans involved in the violence in Bydgoszcz.
Last Tuesday's match ended in a riot, with police fighting hooligans who had ripped out seats, invaded the pitch and thrown metal objects and firecrackers. In the end, the police resorted to using water cannons to control the crowd.
The whole episode cost about zł.40,000 in damages, on top of the zł.1 million it cost to police the match.
The ugly scenes have raised questions about security during next year's Euro 2012 soccer championships, which Poland is co-hosting with Ukraine. A number of UEFA officials were present at the match, and it's unlikely they would have been impressed with what they saw.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk responded strongly to the violence, saying that the police and organizers of mass events should increase cooperation between one another. He also said hooligans banned from soccer matches should be prevented from attending other large-scale events.
He added that the necessary authorities should follow police guidance and close stadiums to fans if security cannot be guaranteed during the matches.
Mr Tusk also ordered Lech Poznan and Legia Warszawa to play their next league games behind closed doors, much to the anger of some fans who gathered outside the stadiums in Warsaw and Poznan, chanting anti-government slogans.

Fan shot dead after Brazilian football match
Police say a supporter has been shot dead following a Brazilian football match ended with a brawl between players on the pitch. A 19-year-old Goias fan was killed outside Serra Dourada stadium, which will host Brazil's friendly against the Netherlands in June, following Sunday's semifinal between Goias and Vila Nova in the Goiania state championship. A brutal fight involving several players erupted after the game, apparently caused by Goias' celebrations at reaching the final after the match was drawn 2-2. It took police officers 15 minutes to break up the brawl.

Italy : Bari players attacked by fans - 11/05/2011
Source : Supersport.com
Bari players were attacked during training on Wednesday when a group of fans were let into the club complex to express their anger at the team's showing this season.
Bari were relegated with four games still to play after a woeful season spent mostly propping up the table.
Nicola Belmonte received two slaps, according to local press reports, while someone also tried to attack Edgar Alvarez and Sergio Almiron was involved in a furious argument.
Fans had been let into the stands to watch the practice session from where they let off bangers and smoke bombs and made threatening chants towards the players.
"The training session was momentarily suspended to give fans a chance to speak with the players," said a statement on the club's website.
"They asked the players for maximum commitment in Sunday's important (local derby) against Lecce."

Celtic fan jailed for monkey taunt at El Hadji Diouf - 12/05/2011
Source : Scotsman.com
A CELTIC fan who made monkey gestures towards Rangers player El Hadji Diouf during an Old Firm game has been jailed for three months.
Racist Sean Smith taunted the West African striker as he took a corner kick for the Ibrox side in February this year.
The 19-year-old was reported to police by fellow Celtic fans who were disgusted by his behaviour and was later arrested after his photograph appeared in a Sunday newspaper.
Sentencing the disgraced fan at Glasgow Sheriff Court yesterday, Sheriff Lindsay Wood told Smith his actions that day were "despicable".
Sheriff Wood said: "You have pled guilty to what I consider to be despicable racist behaviour.
"You thought you were making a fool of the player but you were actually making a fool of yourself.
"You have brought shame on the club you support and on Scottish football generally.
"I note that you had been drinking before the game, you had five cans of Strongbow, and I'd like to tell you that that is no way to go to a football match and appreciate it.
"I have to look at these matters in the context of an Old Firm match where tensions are running high and I can see no alternative to a custodial sentence to mark the court's disapproval of such behaviour."
Sheriff Wood also banned Smith from attending football matches for five years.
At an earlier hearing, Smith, of Carrick Road, Spittal, Rutherglen, admitted committing a racially aggravated breach of the peace at Celtic Park on 20 February.
Prosecutor Claire Connachan told the court that the teenager was sitting in the west stand of the stadium.
Five minutes after kick-off Rangers were awarded a corner kick, which was taken by 30-year-old Diouf.
Ms Connachan said: "As he approached the stand to take the free kick, the accused ran from his seat and approached the front of the stand where he commenced making ape-like physical gestures.
"This was noticed by other witnesses, who were offended by what they saw as racial gestures, and the matter was reported."
The prosecutor added: "The actions of the accused were also photographed and he thereafter appeared in a newspaper.
"Following on from investigations which were carried out into the identification of the person in the photograph, the accused was detained by police."
Defence lawyer Raymond McIlwham told the court his client had received death threats.
Mr McIlwham said: "Mr Smith's name has entered cyberspace and this case has received some press coverage and he has been on the end of death threats as a result of it.
"He has been living in real fear since he was identified as the person responsible."
The solicitor added: "These offences are of an extremely serious nature amidst the atmosphere of an Old Firm game - particularly this season it has to be said.
"Thankfully, El Hadji Diouf was wholly unaware of what was going on. He was later spoken to by police, but did not know what was going on.
"There's also no indication that opposing fans were aware of the gestures at the time."
Mr McIlwham added that Diouf had a "difficult" relationship with Celtic fans.
The lawyer said that his client was ashamed and now "deeply regrets" his behaviour.

England : Chesterfield pitch invasion supporters banned - 11/05/2011
Source : BBC News
Chesterfield FC says it has identified and banned 17 people involved in a pitch invasion at the club's b2net Stadium at the end of April.
The club said among those traced was a youth who is alleged to have punched Bury goalkeeper Cameron Belford during the League Two match.
The Football Association (FA) said it did not propose taking any further action over the disorder.
Derbyshire Police arrested and bailed six people over the pitch invasion.
A spokesperson from the force said five of those arrested were aged between 13 and 18 and one 38-year-old man. They have all been released on bail pending further inquiries.
'Yellow card' The pitch invasion happened after one of Chesterfield's goals in a game Bury went on to win 3-2, clinching promotion to nPower League One and delaying the Spireites' clinching of the League Two title.
The club - which described those involved as "idiots" - had been fearful of a heavy fine from the FA, but believes the speed at which those involved were identified, as well as an increase in the number of match day stewards, helped avoid sanctions.
However, the FA has reserved the right to return to the matter if there is further spectator misconduct at the stadium.
Chesterfield chairman Barrie Hubbard said: "In football terms we have been yellow carded but it could have been so much worse because the FA has a wide range of sanctions at its disposal.
"The strong line the club has taken in conjunction with the police, and the clear warning to fans about future behaviour, which was so impeccably observed at the Gillingham game, has clearly all been taken into account."
He added: "The fans have shown they can behave and celebrate in a responsible manner and this has set the standard now expected at all future matches."
Investigations to identify others involved in the disorder were ongoing, the club said.

Poland : Police detain another 48 on hooliganism charges - 13/05/2011
Source : Thenews.pl
Police have detained another 48 fans of Legia Warsaw and Lech Poznan in connection with the rioting at the Polish Cup final in Bydgoszcz last Tuesday.
The detentions come after 26 alleged hooligans were arrested earlier this week after being identified from CCTV and television images.
Chief of Police Andrzej Matejuk said this morning that the investigation into the rioting, which caiused considerable damage to the stadium in Bydgoszcz where the Polish Cup final was being played, was still ongoing and further detentions could follow today or at the weekend.
Andrzej Matejuk said that those detained were not only from Warsaw and Poznan but other cities too.
The detentions follow a ban imposed yesterday on supporters travelling to away matches in the first and second division until the end of the season.
The rioting at the Polish Cup final plus fighting between Polish and Lithuanian fans at a recent friendly between the two national sides has raised concerns among UEFA officials ahead of Poland and Ukraine hosting the Euro 2012 football championships next summer.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk held a meeting on Wednesday with officials from the Ekstraklasa first division, urging them to get tough with Poland’s hooligan problem.
“There are sufficient legal instruments to deal with this issue already. What is necessary is the will to put them into practice,” he told reporters.

Source : LeMatin.ch
Supporters of the FC Zurich blocked the special train which was reserved to them on Sunday afternoon in St-Gall requiring the release two of them arrested by the police.
They refused to leave before the release the two. At the end of long discussions, the convoy could leave with nearly 90 minutes of delay, without the two arrested people, specified local police on Monday.
Supporters from Zurich sowed the disorder before and after the football game opposing St-Gall to Zurich.
Two people had already been apprehended before the match, for violences and threats. One was already under a stadium ban and had made violences against the police officers.
The other had attacked security which controlled the entries. It is to make release these two individuals in vain that the supporters prevented their train leaving. This action caused delays in the regular rail traffic.

Ten people were slightly wounded after troubles
Approximately 1500 Basel supporters entered in force in the Letzigrund in Zurich Wednesday evening before the match against the local team. They put at bag of the stands and damaged the WC. About ten people were slightly wounded.
On the other hand they were no serious incidents at the enf of the game which ended 2.2. Among the casualties appear of the members of private security services which tried to retain the vandals. The incidents occurred little before 8pm, whereas 2000 supporters from Basel still waited to be able to enter the stadium.
Approximately 1500 of them suddenly took the entry by storm, indicated the manager of the stadium, Peter Landolt. Even the intervention of police with water cannons did not make it possible to retain them.

Ireland: Cork City FC - Shelbourne FC - 14/05/2011
A 16-year-old is fighting for his life after being attacked following an Airtricity League game at Tolka Park.
The teenager, from Blarney, Co Cork, is in an induced coma after being seriously injured in the incident, which followed the match between Shelbourne and Cork City in nearby Tolka Park.
Emergency services responding to the call thought at first he had been run over by a bus, so severe were his injuries, the Herald understands.
Gardai at Fitzgibbon Street station are investigating the assault, which has left the teenager in a critical condition.
The incident was at a bus stop across from Kennedy's Pub on the Drumcondra Road just before 10pm last night. It is understood a group attacked some Cork supporters and initial reports said the teenager was hit with a bottle.
He suffered a serious head injury. His older brother was left with a bloodied face.
Gardai were last night trying to unravel the sequence of events which left the boy lying on the ground seriously injured.
critical
An ambulance was called to the scene and the injured teen was put on oxygen before being rushed to the Mater Hospital where his condition last night was described as critical.
The attack reportedly involved up to 10 people.
The teenager was part of a coach load of young fans who had travelled to Dublin from Cork to watch the Airtricity League First Division fixture at Tolka Park.
Shelbourne and Cork City had just played out an 1-1 draw in the top of the table clash, and it is understood the Cork fans were returning to their mini-coach when the incident occurred.
Gardai were late last night still at the scene, which was sealed off pending a forensic investigation.
Torn clothing and a large spattering of blood could be seen from the roadside.
The teenager's shocked fellow fans looked on in disbelief as gardai cordoned off the scene. Locals drinking in nearby Kennedy's and Fagan's pubs spilled out onto the street as news of the attack spread.
"We just came out and saw a young guy lying motionless on the road before being taken away by ambulance," said one.
Gardai at Fitzgibbon Street are appealing for witnesses.
