Hooligans fight in Nice
Supporters of the SC Bastia, which went yesterday to Fréjus, benefitted from their game in Nice to face young locals and to ransack a restaurant .
In the jargon of the supporters of football, that is called a “fight”. A combat. And in spite of a narrow police surveillance on arrival of the Bastia-Nice ferry yesterday at 1.30pm, Bastia supporters, in transit before the match against Frejus, managed to face Nice rivals.
Very was held in a few minutes in an environment of urban guerilla warfare, in front of tourists and astounded customers of restaurant. An amazing outburst of violence whereas a tear gas odor was spread in the atmosphere.

Goalkeeper Punched In Head During Match
A man has been arrested for allegedly punching a goalkeeper in the middle of a match after a crowd invaded the pitch.
Bury’s keeper Cameron Belford was photographed being punched in the head by an angry fan after conceding a goal.
The altercation came as a group of fans, some of whom were young children, ran onto the pitch at Chesterfield.
They taunted Belford, 22, making obscene gestures before one individual lashed out and hit him in the face.
The goalie managed to keep calm and Bury eventually pulled ahead with just three minutes to go to win 3-2.
The victory means they have secured promotion to League One and still have a chance of taking the League Two trophy.
Belford later made an official complaint about the incident.
A 38-year-old man is being held in custody and is due to be questioned later.
Inspector Russell Dakin from Derbyshire Police said: "It appears that a fan has encroached on the pitch and assaulted the goalkeeper.
"We are scanning the CCTV system and liaising with the club and members of the media and collating as much evidence as possible."
Chesterfield FC have appealed to fans to name and shame all the supporters involved in the clash.
CFC stadium manager Colin Nellist said: "The very minimum that will happen to this person is that they will get a ban from the club and whatever happens thereafter will depend on the courts. We take this very seriously indeed."
He added: "It is very disappointing that the good name of the club has been brought into disrepute by the stupidity of a mindless few who we are keen to identify."
Bury FC said: "As far as we are concerned, there is no further comment and if Chesterfield want to take action that is a matter entirely for them."

Victory ‘Song’ Lands Taye Taiwo in Trouble! - 25/04/2011
Source : Thisdaylive.com
After scoring the lone goal that helped his team, Olympic Marseille to become the first team in 17 years to retain the French League Cup on Saturday, Super Eagles defender Taye Taiwo has run into troubled waters with his mouth. Sunday, the French League (LFP), began investigating the Nigerian ‘bomber’ for chanting an anti- Paris St. Germain song it said contains expletive.
"The French Professional League has decided to open an investigation following Taye Taiwo's behaviour after the League Cup final between Olympique Marseille and Montpellier," the LFP said in a statement Sunday, just 24 hours after the victory at Stade de France.
The league administrators said that immediately after Marseille were presented with the trophy, Taye Taiwo took a microphone and sang, along with fans, a song aimed at arch-rivals PSG. "The League will hand the file to the (French federation's) Ethics Committee," the LFP added.
Asked what he thought of the incident on Saturday, Marseille manager, Deschamps replied: "I did not hear it. It will give you something to write about. The less you write about it, the better it is," the coach said in a reply to a Reuter’s reporter’s question.
But the Nigerian player at the centre of the row, admitted his mistake and immediately tendered an apology. Taiwo said on the Marseille’s website yesterday that he was sorry for his actions.
"I want to apologise for what I have sung at the Stade de France. All my team mates told me it was not a good thing to do and that it hurt their feelings. I now also feel bad to have done that. I was euphoric, we had just won and we were singing... Once again, I apologise."

In Argentina, Hooligans Turn Football Into a Deadly Game - 26/04/2011
Source : Associated Press
The recent death of San Lorenzo fan Ramon Aramayo has exposed, once again, how unrelenting violence is scarring Argentine football.
The father of two made the mistake of objecting to a security check last month as he approached the stadium of opposing Buenos Aires club Velez Sarsfield. Exactly what he said or did isn’t known, but the confrontation lasted only seconds before police officers wrestled him to the asphalt, face down.
“Aramayo resisted being frisked and witnesses told me what followed was a brutal beating by police,” said Gustavo Grabia, a journalist and expert on Argentine hooliganism.
“They used excessive force. He was taken down to the ground. They hit him in the back, in the legs. They squeezed his testicles,” he said.
Aramayo was pronounced dead minutes later, and three officers were suspended the next day. His autopsy showed bruising from police blows, but the report said he probably died of heart failure — or traumatic shock — brought on by the assault.
His was the country’s 13th football-related death in just over a year.
Football violence in Argentina is distinct from the thuggish brutality associated with English hooliganism, which has prompted several pieces of anti-violence legislation in Britain over the last 25 years.
Mayhem threatens almost every match, whether the perpetrators are individual fans, police or hooligan gangs. In a nation with a proud football tradition, little is being done about the deadly blight on the game.
Grabia and others say the reason is a web of connections that touches hooligan gangs, football officials, police and the nation’s highest-ranking politicians.
“It is impossible to combat the problem here,” Grabia said. “The violence is committed by people deeply involved with the clubs, politics and unions.”
On March 20, the day Aramayo died, the 50,000-seat Velez stadium grew unruly as word spread of what had happened.
Rival hooligan groups, known in Spanish as barras bravas , shouted sexually graphic insults at each other. Then, seven minutes into the game, San Lorenzo goalkeeper Pablo Migliore dropped to the ground, struck on the head by an object thrown from the stands.
From that moment, the crowd grew even more frenzied. Shirtless fans climbed a chain-link fence, ripping it free of its moorings, trying to get at black-clad police on the other side.
The match was eventually abandoned and no one took responsibility for the chaos. Club presidents, government officials and police tried to distance themselves from it.
Fans blamed the police. The Argentine Football Association remained silent. News of the death and the mayhem was ignored later in the day on state-funded TV, which broadcasts all the matches.
The AFA says such violence is simply an outgrowth of rising street crime in Argentina, and one official has famously said: “Don’t throw the corpses on our doorstep.”
AFA’s disciplinary committee met after the death, but made no statement about it. Association president Julio Grondona, also FIFA’s vice president, made his first public statement two days after in a radio interview.
“I have nothing to say. I’m not making any mea culpa. I was in Chile when it happened,” he said. “I’m profoundly sorry that the incident took place within football. We have to wait to see what happened.”
Other recent football-related deaths have looked like mafia-style killings, further tarnishing the image of a country that has produced three of the game’s greatest players: Lionel Messi, Diego Maradona and Alfredo Di Stefano.
Eighteen months ago, Pablo Gomez, a member of the Newell’s Old Boys barra brava , was shot four times at point-blank range. Five months later, the leader of Newell’s group — Roberto Camino, also known as Pimpi — was gunned down in a bar.
The main way to deal with the violence has been to separate rival fans in stadiums, most of which are decrepit, with fields ringed by moats and fences. But with hooligans unable to confront one another at the stadiums, the bedlam has increasingly spread to surrounding neighborhoods.
Grabia has studied the barras bravas as a reporter with sports daily Ole. He has published a book about La Doce, the hooligans of Boca Juniors, and has documented the jailing of at least 35 hooligan leaders.
“The deaths have changed absolutely nothing,” Grabia said. “It is impossible to be optimistic when all you see is more violence, more money involved and more impunity.”
Grabia links the intractable problem to the tight relationships between fan groups, clubs and many of the country’s most important politicians.
The groups do the nitty-gritty work for the clubs. Barras run the merchandise and food concessions, scalp tickets provided to them by the clubs and control parking at the stadiums.
In exchange for supporting the groups, club officials — many of whom are high-profile politicians or union leaders — can count on fan groups to provide easily mobilized turnouts at political rallies or labor-union protests.
Some barras even get a cut of rich player transfers, meaning there is big money involved.
Grabia estimates the top half-dozen leaders of fan groups at Boca Junior or River Plate earn about $80,000 annually in a nation where the legal minimum wage is $5,400 a year.
Chris Gaffney, author of “Temples of the Earthbound Gods: Stadiums in the Cultural Landscapes of Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires,” described stadium scenes in Argentina with thousands of barras bravas , their backs to the field and in a near-trance, orchestrating young men into a frenzy.
The football doesn’t matter, he said in an interview.
“Basically you have two organized mini-armies in the stadiums,” Gaffney said. “Old stadiums, corrupt policing — it is lethal and you can’t be sure where it will explode first.”

Hooligans targeted at Devon football match by police - 27/04/2011
Source : BBC News
About 400 police officers are mounting an operation to target football hooligans at a match in Devon.
Police are drafting in mounted officers from south Wales for Saturday's end of season local derby between Exeter City and Plymouth Argyle at St James Park.
The force said the match had the highest risk rating for a football game and warned hooligans that they would be dealt with quickly and firmly.
The teams met in November at Home Park, where at least 20 people were arrested.
Devon and Cornwall Police Ch Insp Peter Coppin-Harris, said: "We know the vast majority of those coming to the game are genuine supporters.
"If there's a minority that are intent on disruption then this will not be tolerated, they'll be dealt with quickly and firmly and those caught face a lengthy football banning order."
Exeter City chief executive Julian Tagg said: "We want a safe game in a safe environment and our fans can help make this possible by co-operating with requests from stewards and police before, during and after the match."

Greek fans clash after finance crackdown - 26/04/2011
Source : USA TODAY
Fans of a football team in northern Greece have clashed with police and supporters of a rival club, following a decision by sporting authorities to relegate clubs with troubled finances.
The new rules imposed during Greece's major financial crisis will see first-division clubs Iraklis and Panionios relegated to the second tier next season if their appeals fail.
The clashes broke out late Tuesday in the center of the northern city of Thessaloniki during a protest march by Iraklis fans, who battled with riot police and supporters of city rival PAOK.
Police used tear gas to disperse rock-throwing youths and officials say several people have been detained, without immediately giving any further details.

Championship-winning Queens Park Rangers fans invade Watford pitch
Mounted police had to be deployed at Vicarage Road this afternoon to help disperse a large group of Queens Park Rangers fans from the pitch after their side clinched the Championship title with a 2-0 victory over Watford.
Despite requests to stay off the playing surface and warnings that any supporters who did go on to the field of play would be arrested, a number of fans from the away supporters area at the Vicarage Road end did break through the police line and managed to get on to the pitch to celebrate with manager Neil Warnock and his players.
Once the QPR staff had returned to the dressing room area, four horses were brought on to the pitch to help usher those on the pitch back to the away part of the Vicarage Road end.
Trouble had also flared earlier in the game when Rangers took the lead through Adel Taarabt. Punches were thrown in a middle section of the Rookery End, while a fan also ran onto the pitch from the Lower Rous where a large section of visiting supporters had gained entry, despite it being a home fans area.
That goal and an injury-time strike from Tommy Smith secured the points Rangers needed to confirm their return to the Premier League, although the London club will now await the outcome of next week’s FA hearing into the signing of Alejandro Faurlin in 2009.
The Loftus Road club could face a points deduction if found guilty of breaching the rules regarding alleged third party ownership of the player.

Five arrested after QPR match
Five people were arrested after football fans ran onto the pitch after Watford FC’s final home game of the season.
Visitors QPR beat the Hornets 2-0 on Saturday to secure promotion to the Premier League, prompting hundreds of fans to leave their seats and join the players on the pitch.
Police officers mounted on horses were called in to help disperse those on the pitch.
Watford supporters have criticised the club’s handling of the fixture, complaining about the number of away fans sitting with them, which led club officials to the release of a lengthy statement on Sunday.
Hertfordshire Police said between 120 and 150 QPR fans invaded the pitch at the final whistle.
A statement said: “Due to the high volume of fans in a small space, mounted officers took to the pitch to disperse the crowd.
“This action was quickly taken to avoid people being injured and to prevent disorder.
“As a result of the incident, five people have been arrested on a range of offences including pitch invasion and public order offences. Enquiries to identify other people responsible are underway.
“Hertfordshire Constabulary’s policing of events such as a football matches is proportionate and fair, so people can enjoy themselves safely, however, officers will always have to act to prevent injury to the public or officers, and to maintain public order.”

Sweden: Syrianska - AIK Stockholm - 22/04/2011
Source : http://www.thelocal.se
Match abandoned after firework hits referee
Sunday's Allsvenskan football match between Stockholm clubs AIK and Syrianska had to be abandoned 20 minutes into the match after an assistant referee was struck by a firecracker thrown from the crowd.
Violence broke out in the first half when referee Martin Strömbergsson sent off AIK’s Teteh Bangura for stamping on the opposition goalkeeper. The red card provoked violence from both sets of fans and objects rained onto the pitch, one of which caught Wärnmark on the head.
Match official Lars Wilhelmsson said, “He has definitely got tinnitus and will need to see a doctor. He still cannot hear properly.”
Once again hooliganism has cast an ugly shadow over the game here, although there are differing accounts of which set of fans actually threw the firework that hit Wärnmark.
According to Canal Plus there were about 20 objects thrown onto the pitch and Radiosporten sources claim that the firework which hit the referee came from the Syrianska fans.
AIK fans responded by raining fireworks and other objects at the home fans.
With Wärnmark taken away for treatment the players and officials were led off the pitch and after some 40 minutes of deliberating, it was decided the safest option would be to abandon the match.
Shortly afterwards, match referee Strömbergsson talked to the media and explained why the match was called off.
“It was due to the circumstances, quite simply and above all because the assistant referee received a blow just milimetres from his ear. He is in great pain. He has to go to hospital and for that reason we decided to call off the game”, he said, adding that Wärnmark is still badly shaken after the incident.
It is still unclear whether the game will be replayed and if so, when. At the time of the incident, Syrianska were leading 1-0.
