Germany: Punish clubs for fan trouble - 15/03/2010

Source : reuters

German clubs who cannot contain unruly fans should be punished by playing matches behind closed doors, Germany's police union said on Monday.

Dozens of Hertha Berlin fans stormed the Olympic stadium pitch after a 2-1 home defeat against Nuremberg on Saturday left the capital side anchored to the bottom of the Bundesliga.

The supporters, some armed with steel bars, demolished team benches and advertising panels, chasing stewards around the pitch as players and coaches fled to the changing rooms.

Four officers were slightly injured and some 30 people were detained as police in riot gear restored order.

"There needs to be more drastic measures and that means soccer without spectators," German police officers' union chief Rainer Wendt told reporters.

"I was not at the stadium but the television pictures clearly show that the officers who were there were completely overwhelmed."

Wendt said tough measures were necessary so that "troublemakers really feel that they are damaging their clubs."

Wendt is not the only advocate of cracking down hard with German soccer league (DFL) chief Reinhard Rauball saying he fully supported "tough punishment."

"The DFL and the clubs... will not tolerate violent fans. There will be a unified line with the soccer federation (DFB) against those rioting fans," Rauball said in a statement.

Crowd trouble in German stadiums is relatively rare, with clubs more often fined for fans lighting flares in the stands.

Swindon Town and Southampton fans arrested after trouble near St. Mary's Stadium - 17/03/2010

Source: http://www.thisishampshire.net/news/5065565.Fans_arrested_before_Saints_match/#

DETECTIVES are investigating after a fight broke out resulting in the arrests of 14 fans moments before last night's match between Southampton and Swindon.

Trouble flared outside a pub in St Mary's Street between a big crowd of supporters, spilling in to nearby Jonas Nichols Square just 15 minutes before kick-off.

Two Saints fans were arrested at the scene and taken to a nearby police station.

A contingent of Swindon supporters were then escorted on the short walk to St Mary's Stadium, but were also arrested and detained by police before they were allowed inside the ground.

All 14 people were held in police cells overnight and were this morning expected to be interviewed by police leading the investigation.

It's believed officers are examining CCTV footage and images to establish exactly what happened near the Plume and Feathers pub around 7.30pm.

Police were also called following reports of a man who had been stabbed in the same area at around the same time as the fracas, but it is not thought to be linked to the football related violence.

Anyone with information or who witnessed the trouble is asked to call Shirley CID on 101 and ask for the Operation Billet team.

PSG fan dies after attack from fellow supporters - 18/03/2010

Source: ESPN

A Paris St Germain fan attacked by supporters of his own club has died after weeks in a coma.

The 38-year-old man, who has not been named, passed away late on Wednesday night after being involved in street clashes before the match against arch rivals Marseille on February 28, which PSG lost 3-0.

French sports minister Rama Yade believes news of the death means PSG have reached a crossroads.

She said in a statement: "The club's survival is at stake. The worst has happened. Passions transformed into sordid, senseless, murderous rage.

"Love of the team jersey has become hate for the other, hate for the sport, hate for life.

"It is a victory for barbarism and a defeat for sport, fraternity and civilisation. Everyone should be concerned, first and foremost the leaders of all clubs.

"This may take time but our resolve will not falter."

PSG have banned their fans from away games for the foreseeable future while this weekend's game against Nice will be played behind closed doors following trouble involving Nice fans in their game against Monaco on January 30.

The parents of the deceased have called for calm following their son's death.

In a statement, they said: "All those who considered themselves attached to our son should show calm, restraint and dignity in the expression of their emotion."

Four people were arrested yesterday in connection with the death.

Turkey: Diyarbakır ordered to play three matches behind closed doors - 20/03/2010

Source: http://www.todayszaman.com/tz-web/news-204834-5-diyarbakir-ordered-to-play-three-matches-behind-closed-doors.html

The Professional Soccer Discipline Committee (PFDK) yesterday announced the penalties for Diyarbakırspor after the team’s eventful week 25 match against İstanbul BĂĽyĂĽkşehir Belediyespor and for AnkaragĂĽcĂĽ after the game against Galatasaray.
Southeastern side Diyarbakırspor will play three games behind closed doors at home as punishment for the misbehavior of its fans in last week’s game against İstanbul BĂĽyĂĽkşehir Belediyespor in İstanbul, the PFDK ruled after its meeting on Thursday.

The PFDK also imposed a TL 50,000 fine on Diyarbakırspor. The match was called off in the 87th minute after a group of Diyarbakır fans threw objects onto the field and others invaded the pitch.

The Diyarbakırspor-Bursaspor match in week 24 had also been called off, and Diyarbakırspor was ordered by the PFDK to play three matches behind closed doors.

AnkaragĂĽcĂĽ will also play one game behind closed doors due to the misconduct of its fans in last week’s match against Galatasaray in İstanbul and was also given a TL 85,000 fine.

Glentoran: Football supporters let off with warning over match day violence - 15/03/2010

Source: http://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/football-supporters-let-off-with-warning-over-match-day-violence-450109.html#ixzz0innrAVuI

Four Glentoran football supporters arrested when violence broke out at a Setanta Cup clash with Bohemians in Dublin on Saturday were let off with warnings today.

The four men, who are from the North, were arrested before and during the soccer match in Dublin's Dalymount Park.

Fighting broke out shortly after kick-off and gardaĂ intervened when a Glentoran supporter allegedly attempted to erect an Ulster flag at the stadium.

Today four defendants, James Archer (aged 43) of Raden Wood, East Belfast, Paul Ritchie (aged 23), of Bracken Ridge, Carrickfergus, Co. Antrim, Robert Hatty (aged 46), of Penrhyn Park, Co. Down and John Hammond (aged 27) of Lewis Avenue, East Belfast, appeared at Dublin District Court.

The four had been held in custody since they were arrested on Saturday evening and pleaded guilty today to Public Order Act charges for being intoxicated to an extent of being a danger to themselves and others and engaging in threatening, insulting and abusive behaviour with intent to cause a breach of the peace.

Garda Eoin Lynch, of Fitzgibbon Street station, told Judge Cormac Dunne that on March 13, Ritchie was seen “running in the middle of the road, up to rival Bohemians fans, gesturing and roaring.”

He added that Ritchie was extremely intoxicated at the time and had been shouting and screaming at up to 40 Bohemians supporters who had been in the area, outside the stadium.

Ritchie said he had come to Dublin on “the supporters bus, I had been hoping to go home that night.”

Judge Dunne heard that co-defendant Hatty invaded the football pitch after his team scored a goal and was drunk and abusive.

The court was also told that during the Setanta cup tie, Archer, became “abusive and extremely violent to gardaĂ, staff and security working at the venue.”

Hammond, who was sporting a bruised right eye, also pleaded guilty to his role in the disturbances.

Judge Dunne said their behaviour was “not the essence of what sport is about” and could not be condoned.

However, he noted that they had pleaded guilty and had been held in custody since their arrests. Judge Dunne said “soccer hooliganism creates mayhem” but they had suffered the loss of their liberty since being arrested on Saturday.

He applied the Probation Offenders' Act leaving all four without a criminal conviction and warned them that they must behave properly in future.

Two other men, also from the North, are due to appear at the Dublin District Court on Thursday next.

Hertha hit 23 fans with three-year bans after riot - 20/03/2010

Source: http://sports.sg.msn.com/football/bundesliga/article.aspx?cp-documentid=3973614

Hertha Berlin have banned 23 of their fans from all football stadiums in Germany for three years after supporters rioted at Berlin's Olympic Stadium following last weekend's defeat by Nuremberg.

After Nuremberg scored an injury-time winner in Berlin, around 100 spectators jumped barriers and chased the players off the pitch, threatening them with flagpoles which they then used to vandalise the bench area.

The German Football Federation (DFB) are investigating the violence which saw parts of the stadium damaged before police regained control, but Hertha have identified 23 fans and informed them that they are banned until July 2013.

Those identified also face police prosecution for breach of the peace and for damage caused by their pitch invasion.

At least one fan is being sued by Hertha for damaging their property.

The DFB are expected to reveal the findings of their investigation into the violence on Wednesday.

Hertha face Wolfsburg on Sunday in the German league and are five points adrift at the foot of the table which means they are set to be relegated from the Bundesliga when the season ends on May 8.

Paris football fan dies three weeks after beating - 18/03/2010

Source: Thefreelibrary.com

A 38-year-old supporter of French side Paris Saint- Germain has died three weeks after being severely beaten by members of a rival gang of supporters of the same team, Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux said Thursday on RTL radio, , according to dpa. The man, identified only as Yann L., had been on a respirator since the night of February 28, when he was attacked by a group of PSG supporters from a rival group. The daily Le Figaro reported on its web site that he had been considered clinically dead since Tuesday. Four people were arrested Wednesday in connection with the beating. Investigators say they have links with the primary suspect in the case, a 28-year-old man who was placed under examination on Saturday on a charge of attempted murder. PSG's home ground, the Parc des Princes UEFA 4-star rated football stadia, and the surrounding streets have seen many violent clashes between fan clubs from different suburban neighbourhoods. Hortefeux said Thursday that he has already put in place measures to curb hooligan violence in France. These include the establishment of rapid-intervention police units to secure stadiums and stadium bans of up to 12 months for repeat offenders.

Seven face action over Saints and Pompey clash - 16/03/2010

Source: http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/frattonlatest/Seven-face-action-over-Saints.6156011.jp

Seven more men charged following derby day clashes between Pompey and Southampton fans could face football banning orders.
They were arrested after police released 10 CCTV images of those wanted in connection with violent clashes at Pompey's fifth round FA Cup clash against Southampton last month.

It comes in addition to the 11 men charged - mainly with public order offences - following Portsmouth crushing 4-1 defeat over the Saints at St Mary's Stadium in Southampton on February 13.

Martin B., 42, of Wheatlands, Fareham; Michael B., 24, of Aldermoor Road, Southampton; Ross P., 28, of Swift Road, Southampton; and James K., 20, of Haddon Drive, Eastleigh; have been charged with violent disorder.

Matthew H., 19, of Hillside Avenue, Southampton, and Louis B., 24, of The Milburns, Romsey, have also been charged with violent disorder.

Thomas H., 19, of Marston Road, Southampton, is charged with threatening behaviour.

A spokesman for Hampshire Police said: 'Officers from the Operation Austen Team are working in conjunction with the club and the Crown Prosecution Service to find, arrest and charge where appropriate anyone found acting violently at football games.

'They will also be looking to get football banning orders against those involved.'

Police have now re-issued CCTV images of the three men they are still trying to trace - including a fresh image of one of the men they want to speak to.

Four of the fans initially arrested after violent clashes on February 13 were given orders banning them from watching
their team play.

They were also fined and must surrender their passports every time their team or England play abroad and not go near a football ground on match days for three years.

Hampshire Constabulary and the Crown Prosecution Service may also appeal fines handed to two other fans who admitted committing fear or provocation of violence.

Ashley S., 19, and Nick S. D., 29, of Mandela Way, Southampton, were fined ÂŁ100 and ÂŁ150 respectively for causing trouble.

But concerns were raised over the fact that they too were not given banning orders.

More than 260 officers were involved in policing the match as part of Operation Austen, including officers on horseback, police dog handlers and the British Transport police.

Anyone with information should call the Operation Austen Team in Southampton on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Three PSG fans under investigation for alleged murder - 20/03/2010

Source: Reuters

Three Paris St Germain supporters suspected of taking part in the fatal beating of a fan have been placed under judicial investigation for alleged murder, the Paris prosecutor's office said on Saturday.

The three were among four who were detained in custody following a beating that put a 38-year-old PSG fan in a coma before a game against Olympique Marseille on Feb. 28. The fan died on Wednesday.

Under French law, being placed under investigation can lead to being formally charged and facing trial.

A fourth supporter was released.

Since the incident, PSG have stopped selling tickets for away matches and have been ordered to play two matches behind closed doors.

The Paris club have been struggling for years to keep their most violent supporters under control.

In the same time Lierse coaches left the stadium and a shop was damage by a firecracker.

Prior to the game, a few scuffles erupted in a petrol station between FC Porto supporters and Benfica supporters. It seems that 4 bus fulled of Porto supporters attacked a few Benfica supporters who were in the station. National press said one man was injured.

In the stadium area , coaches of Super Dragoes (FCP) pelted Benfica supporters with bottles and rocks and got pushed back by riot police.
It seems that 4 people were injured and 2 FCP fans arrested.
A confrontation also occured between rivals in the Infante street.

Later, police shooted rubber bullets in the air, but one Porto supporter was injured at his head by a bullet.

Bulgaria: Lokomotiv Mezdra - CSKA Sofia - 21/03/2010

Source: national press + http://www.proreferee.com/article/3396

CSKA Sofia match abandoned due to crowd trouble

The Bulgarian league match between Lokomotiv Mezdra and visiting CSKA Sofia was abandoned in the 65th minute due to crowd trouble on Sunday.

Angry CSKA fans threw stones and invaded the pitch after Ismail Isa put the home side ahead, forcing referee Ivaylo Stoyanov to abandon the match.

The ugly scenes continued for several minutes as CSKA supporters clashed with local fans.

“The referee decided that it’s impossible the game to continue,” match delegate Nedelcho Mihaylov told reporters.

“We have to wait for the reports of match delegate and referees… the Bulgarian Football Union’s (BFU) commissions will rule next week,” said BFU press officer Pavel Kolev, adding the disciplinary commission will hold an extraordinary meeting on Monday.

There was no police presence inside the stadium because Lokomotiv refused to pay the security taxes while more then 150 CSKA fans were allowed to watch the game very close to the field.

“It was not normal for this match to go ahead in such conditions,” said CSKA’s chief executive Ventsislav Zhivkov. “We’ll press for a replay.”

CSKA’s supporters club chairman Dimitar Angelov added: “The offenders should be punished.”

CSKA’s bus left the stadium under increased security.

CSKA, 31-times Bulgarian champions, are second in the standings with 38 points from 18 matches, four points behind leaders Litex Lovech.
