Arrests follow Norwich-Leeds clash
Police today welcomed a job well done as their “most challenging” match of the season at Carrow Road passed with relatively few arrests.
There were sporadic skirmishes before and after the top-of-the-table Norwich City v Leeds United clash, but Supt Jim Smerdon of Norfolk Police said officers were “on top of the situation”.
His comments were challenged by some Canaries fans, who criticised the decision to allow the Leeds fans to leave at the same time as the home supporters, and said some of the behaviour they witnessed from the Yorkshire followers was “intimidating”.
One fan, who did not want to be named, said: “We sit in the River End and came out about five minutes after the final whistle. As we approached the Jarrold Stand it was clear the Leeds fans were being let out.
“No police were present and Leeds fans were picking off the city fans as they walked past. I saw a grown-up Leeds fans spitting at a 10 year old and his dad as we walked past.
“It must be 15 years since I've felt so intimidated at a home match. Why the police felt the need to let them out as they had just lost in the 90th minute is beyond me.”
Another fan, writing on the website carrowroad.net, said a woman and her four-year-old had encountered a group of Leeds fans in Dereham before the game.
He said: “A few of them walked across towards her shouting and swearing at her and the terrified little lad. On getting back to her car she had to spend 30 odd minutes trying to persuade her boy to go to the game as he thought he was going to have go through it again. Sadly that was the case as she walked to the ground right near Carrow Road.”
Supt Smerdon said: “It was a top-of-the-table clash that was very significant for both teams. It was always going to be passionate and Norwich scoring in the last minute did not help us.
“It's fair to say that the game attracted factions from both clubs that we don't want to see at football matches.”
He added that there were “six or seven arrests” and said: “There were some policing challenges. But we were up to the challenges on the way in and on the way out.”
Supt Smerdon defended the decision to allow the Leeds fans to leave at the final whistle, saying: “Holding fans back is a tactic that has to be pre-planned and needs extra resources. We have to balance it against the safety of the fans in the stadium.”
There were reports of confrontations between fans before the match on Prince of Wales Road and outside the ground immediately after the game, but he said the incidents were “very short”.
Police were called to Dereham to deal with “rowdy behaviour” after 200 Leeds fans arrived in the town before the match, with one coach breaking down nearby.
Many congregated in and around the Red Lion pub on Quebec Street, where officers were sent as a precaution in case of any trouble. But a spokesman for Norfolk police said no serious incidents were recorded and no arrests were made.
He said: There was some rowdy behaviour but nothing untoward was recorded and they all got back on the coach when asked.”

Paris win behind closed doors again
Paris St Germain won their second game behind closed doors within a few days when they crushed strugglers Boulogne 3-0 to move up to 11th in Ligue 1 on Sunday.
PSG had played to an empty stadium on Tuesday at Auxerre where they won on penalties to reach the French Cup semi-finals.
The decision to have both games played without spectators was taken following the death of a supporter injured in a clash between rival groups of PSG fans in Paris last month.

Football fans 'erupted in violence' on Tube - 11/03/2010
Source : BBC News
Two rival groups of football fans who clashed on a Tube train in north London have walked free from court.
Seven men, five Manchester United fans and two Millwall supporters, "erupted in violence" at Euston in November 2008 after attending separate matches.
Michele and Kieran Carey, from Luton, Dean West, of Kent, and Dean Maxwell, of Bromley, denied affray but pleaded guilty to threatening behaviour.
The Southwark Crown Court judge said the men were in "football fan mode".
Three others, Stephen, 51, Liam, 20, and Ryan Carey, 29, also pleaded guilty to threatening behaviour. All five Carey family members are from Third Avenue in Luton.
All seven men were sentenced to 60 hours of unpaid work.
But Michele Carey, 24, who kicked another man as he lay on the platform, was also given a three-month jail sentence, suspended for two years.
After prosecutors accepted pleas to the lesser offence, Judge Peter Testar said: "They may well have been guilty of actual violence which would have attracted the appropriate sentences.
"But I'm going to sentence them for the offences for which they have actually been convicted."
'Very frightening'
Mark Gadsden, prosecuting, said the Carey family, who support Manchester United, were chanting football songs and swearing on the train as it pulled into the station.
Millwall fans Dean Maxwell, 25, of Oakridge Road, Downham, and Dean West, 21, of Bicknor Road, Maidstone, who had been drinking for hours, got involved in a row with the other group.
The prosecutor said: "A large fight broke out.
"Then the whole group piled on to the platform and the fighting continued," Mr Gadsden said.
"It must have been a very frightening incident as far as any ordinary members of the public who were travelling or on the platform must have been concerned," he said.

The Slavija goalkeeper punchep up by a hooligan
Saturday, during a game of the 1st bosnian division which opposed two teams from Sarajevo, the Slavija goalkeeper fought one supporter of the rival team, reported SRNA press agency.
During the match between Zeljeznicar Sarajevo, the club of the Moslems, and Slavija Istocno Sarajevo, followed by serbian community, a 25 year old man invaded the pitch an fronted Ratko Dujkovic, the goalkeeper of Slavija. “Dujkovic presents symptoms of a concussion. It feels badly and it vomits”, declared the trainer of Slavija, Milorad Kosarac, to SRNA.
Zeljeznicar Sarajevo condemns the incident
The game under high tension was win 2 - 0 by Zeljeznicar Sarajevo, whose fans sung anti-Serb slogans during the game. The Zeljeznicar club however “firmly condemned the incident” in an official report, stressing that the team wished “to be distinguished from the hooligans” at the origin of these tensions.
Fifteen years after the end of the civil war which tore Bosnia between its Croatian, Serb and Moslem citizens, the ethnic competitions remain strong in the country.

Juventus Team Bus Pelted With Eggs By Angry Fans, Jonathan Zebina Slapped In The Face The Juventus fans have expressed their dismay with the Turin side's disappointing performances.
Angry Juventus fans have pelted the team bus with eggs in the build-up toward the home match against Atalanta Bergamo. Additionally, defender Jonathan Zebina was slapped in the face by an 'alleged' fan of the Old Lady.
Dozens of Juventus tifosi were waiting for the players at the hotel where the team was preparing for Sunday's Serie A game. Fans started throwing eggs and other objects when the players entered the team bus. One of the supporters even took a swing at French defender Zebina.
According to Sky Sport Italia, the 31-year-old didn't react to the attack and entered the team bus without showing any reaction. Zebina had previously been the subject of fans' abuse after the lost Europa League match against Fulham.
Juventus have been in abysmal form this season and currently sit sixth in the league table. They lost the important away match against Napoli 3-1 in midweek.
JUVENTUS players were pelted with missiles by their own fans ahead of Sunday's Serie A home clash against Atalanta at Turin's Stadio Olimpico.
As the team boarded their bus from the hotel they stay at on the night before games, they came under fire from a hail of beer bottles and eggs, reported Ansa.
Fans, disgruntled at the team's dire form this season, also tried to prevent the bus from leaving and the police had to intervene to allow Juve's players to escape unscathed.
Before the barrage of missiles, fans had hurled abuse at the team, singling out in particular three players: Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro, French full-back Jonathan Zebina and Brazil midfielder Felipe Melo. Zebina was also shown on Sky TV to have been struck on the neck by a fan as he went to board the bus, although he didn't react.
Ahead of the match, which kicked off at 1300GMT (9pm Singapore time), Juve coach Alberto Zaccheroni hit out at the behaviour of those fans.
'I didn't see the strike but you can't raise your hand to someone, that's not part of a civil society,' he said. 'However, protesting against the team's results that's something else, we can accept it.' Fans continued their protests inside the ground, meeting the kick-off against Atalanta with a wall of silence.

FANS QUIZZED OVER DERBY TROUBLE
As many as 40 football fans were being questioned today following a match between two bitter rivals. The East Lancashire derby between Burnley and Blackburn at Turf Moor on Sunday resulted in the arrests, made up of both sets of fans. Supt Terry Woods from Lancashire Police said: "A major policing operation has been in place throughout the day to prevent any disorder. "Unfortunately we have had to deal with some disorder inside and outside the ground. However, the operation that is in place has enabled us to successfully deal with those pockets of disorder rapidly." He said police used an intelligence database as part of the operation to make a number of pro-active arrests as a preventative measure against further disorder within specific groups. "I would like to point out that the vast majority of fans have behaved appropriately," he added. "Unfortunately, a minority have chosen not to behave in the same way which has led to a number of arrests. "The safety of the majority of spectators there to enjoy the game was paramount and I am conscious that in order to achieve this, people leaving the ground have had to take alternative routes home. "I would like to thank those fans who have been patient, especially around travel arrangements and changing their route home." The Football Association have started the process of looking into the disorder that broke out. They are contacting the clubs, match officials and police before deciding what action to take if any. There have been suggestions that coins were thrown at referee Mike Dean as well as Blackburn players David Dunn and Chris Samba. An FA spokesman said: "We are aware of the events of yesterday and will be contacting the clubs, match officials and police for their views."

Greek clubs clash with Sports Ministry over finance in fight against hooligans - 31/03/2010
Source : sportsfeatures.com
The Greek league is heading for confrontation again with the government after the sports ministry suspended financial payments to the sport because of continuing hooligan trouble.
That order from Sports Minister Panagiotis Bitsaxis took action to freeze payments frm the state betting system after eight fans were hurt in fighting in the stands and on the pitch during a cup semi-final between Kavala and Aris Salonica.
The Greek league, in protest, demanded greater support from government, police and fans clubs in cleaning up the game. It said that clubs could not afford to maintain their own increased security measures without their due share of the pools income.
Hooligan and financial problems have threatened to overshadow the national team’s imminent apperance at the World Cup finals over veteran German coach Otto Rehhagel in South Africa this summer.

The Greek government has introduced harsh measures to counter the country's growing football hooliganism. Local clubs from the country's top division will lose 40 million euro in annual state sponsorship, Greek media reported on March 29 2010.
The decision to sever the umbilical cord came in the aftermath of the latest round of violence that has plagued local grounds.
Measures against hooliganism include banning fans from away matches, but supporters and fan clubs have found a way around the rule. Last week, serious clashes occurred at Aris's Greek Cup game in Kavala last week, and once again before the Athens side Panathinaikos's Super League match at Atromitos in Athens on March 28 2010.
On March 29, the government's general secretary for sports, Panayiotis Bitaxis, told a news conference that funding through the state-owned bookmakers company Opap would immediately be suspended.
"Greek citizens are feeling enraged and frustrated at having to watch championships that lack credibility where the law of the jungle and blind violence rules," he said.
The bookmakers firm Opap allocates 23 million euro in sponsorship to Super League clubs annually while another nine million euro is wired to the second and third divisions, three million to the Greek Football Association and another five million through individual deals with clubs.
The Greek government will thwart any funds until it is convinced that local league matches can take place without violence.
In Bulgarian football, violence and pitch invasions are also far from uncommon as local football firms regularly organise scraps among themselves.
In a recent pitch invasion involving CSKA Sofia supporters, during a league match at Mezdra, the football club was slapped with a 15 000 leva fine, ordered to play three home games on neutral ground, and awarded a 0-4 forfeit defeat in the aftermath of the pitch invasion staged by its supporters when CSKA was trailing 0-1.
Bulgarian Football Union’s disciplinary committee said that the behaviour of CSKA fans was completely unacceptable and the club was liable. Meanwhile, the hosts from Mezdra were fined 2000 leva and will have to play their next home match on a neutral ground.

Very strangely, riots broke out for this no high-risk game. Police, in small number this Sunday, were totally outnumebred to contain local hooligans. They used gun shots in the air to calm them down and to escape them. Riots started 15 minutes after kick-off as about 30 hooligans entered the stadium without paying. Local security tried to intervened but fronted hundred local fans who threw missiles at them. Three stewards were injured and hospitalized. Four hooligans were arrested and now, police will use CCTV to arrest other people. They could receive a 3-year jail sentence.
