Benoît Assou-Ekotto faces police inquiry after confronting Spurs fan
• The police are speaking to everyone involved, say Spurs • Redknapp says Bentley 'did not deserve' to be on the bench
Tottenham's full-back Benoît Assou-Ekotto will be investigated over an incident involving a home fan following his side's defeat to Wolves, police have confirmed.
Assou-Ekotto confronted the supporter next to the tunnel at White Hart Lane moments after the final whistle and had to be pulled away by the Spurs assistant manager Joe Jordan, who then led the 25-year-old Cameroon international down the tunnel.
A police spokesperson said: "The police are investigating an allegation of assault following yesterday's Spurs v Wolves Premier League match at White Hart Lane. There have been no arrests."
It is understood the allegation came from the supporter, who gave his version of events to security officials after the incident, as did Jordan. Spurs are also investigating the matter and may look at CCTV footage, as the clash was not caught on camera by broadcasters covering the match.
A goal in the third minute by Kevin Doyle was enough for Wolves to claim three points, and the Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp said: "We probably didn't create enough chances. We had loads of the ball, probably about 80% of the ball, but it's hard when teams just sit in there. It's hard to break them down and they had no need to come out."
The manager was unhappy with the decision to award Wolves a free-kick which led to the only goal. "I didn't think it was a foul for the goal," he said.
Redknapp said it would be a few weeks before Luka Modric is back to his best after the Croatia international returned from a fractured fibula sustained in August, but Roman Pavlyuchenko and David Bentley did not make the bench.
"They're fit," Redknapp said. "I left them off the bench. There was no incident, he just played in a practice match and didn't deserve to be on the bench today, nor did Pavlyuchenko. Other players have worked hard all week to get in the team, put in 110%, I have to send a message out to them as well sometimes."
The Wolves manager Mick McCarthy said: "Marcus Hahnemann's not been diving around making saves everywhere. I expect my keeper to have to make saves when we go to Spurs. I don't care about stats. Somebody told me the other day they had played well on prozone, but do I give a flying about that? No I don't.
"Possession and passes and switching play and really good stuff at times, but Marcus made one really good save and no, we haven't been mullered. They have to work like that at every game. If we have any passengers we're knackered."

Fans of Atalanta assaulted a bus carrying Inter Milan fans after the Lombardy derby in which the two sides drew 1-1 Sunday, the ANSA news agency reported.

Tear gas hits game as Panathinaikos wins
Costas Katsouranis scored twice to steer Panathinaikos to a 3-1 win over Atromitos on Sunday in a match that was suspended for nearly 30 minutes as tear gas drifted in from clashes between police and anarchists outside the ground.
Referee Anastasios Kakos called a halt in the 53rd minute as the players were clearly affected by the tear gas being used by police outside Athens Olympic stadium. Many spectators left at this point, while the game eventually restarted with Panathinaikos leading 2-1.

| Brazil : Coritiba lose right to host 30 games next season due to fans riot - 16/12/2009
Source : chinaview.cn
Coritiba will not be able to host their first 30 games of the 2010 season due to a fans riot, the Brazilian Supreme Court of Sports Justice judged on Tuesday.
Coritiba fans violently invaded their home stadium after their last match on Dec. 6 which saw the club drop to the second tier of the Brazilian soccer championship.
Hosting Fluminense, the team needed to win in order to remain in the first division. However, the team only managed a tie.
After the final whistle of the game, fans invaded the field and chased after the referee Leandro Vuaden. The police held back the crowd, but an officer was injured and much damage was done to the stadium.
Apart from the loss of 30 home games, the club was also fined 300,000 U.S. dollars.

| Cardiff City game moved over fans clash fears - 16/12/2009
Source : Evening Chronicle
A TOON match next year has been re-scheduled after police raised concerns that Newcastle and Sunderland were both playing at home on the same day.
On Saturday, February 6, Newcastle United had been due to play Cardiff at St James’ Park while the Black Cats will welcome Wigan to the Stadium of Light.
Both matches had been scheduled to kick-off at 3pm -meaning that tens of thousands of rival fans could have been spilling out into the two cities’ streets at full-time and travelling home together on the Metro system.
But Newcastle United have today confirmed that the Cardiff clash has now been moved to the evening of Friday 5, after police raised concerns about policing the two games. The match will kick-off at 7.45pm.
A Newcastle United spokesman said: "Newcastle United's home fixture with Cardiff City will now be played on Friday, February 5.
"The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, February 5 but has been moved because of the clash with Sunderland's home fixture with Wigna Atheletic on the same day."
Chief Supt Neil Mackay, of Northumbria Police’s Operations Department, said that while the force did have enough officers to police both matches properly it would be a very large operation.
And he confirmed earlier this week that the force had been in discussions with the Football League about the possibility of getting one of the matches rescheduled.
Chief Supt Mackay said: "We made representations to the Football League expressing concerns that policing both matches would be a considerable operation which we believe could be avoided by re-scheduling one of the games."
Police saw first hand what can happen when a violent minority from the two rival teams came face-to-face this summer.
Trouble-flared at Newcastle Central Station when a train-full of Sunderland fans, travelling home from a pre-season friendly in Edinburgh, clashed with officers on the platform.
Police had learned part of the group had arranged to do battle with a Newcastle United-affiliated hooligan firm.
The two mobs, believed to be associated with rival hooligan gangs, the Newcastle Gremlins and the Seaburn Casuals, were kept apart.
But that didn’t stop violence erupting between supporters and officers and during the melee four police dogs were attacked, while three men were hospitalised with head injuries. A total of 27 people have since been arrested and bailed.
Police will also be hoping that Cardiff City’s notorious hooligan gang do not cause trouble in the North.
The Cardiff Soul Crew has earned a reputation as one of the most violent and feared hooligan firms in Britain.
The gang have been in existence for more than 25 years and are reported to have more than 400 members.

| Serbian police arrest 3 Belgrade football hooligans over threats to TV reporter - 18/12/2009
Source : The Canadian Press
Serbia's police have arrested three football hooligans after Partizan Belgrade fans chanted death threats against a television journalist at a Europa League match.
Police say they are investigating others present at Partizan's match Wednesday with Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk, when thousands of Partizan fans lashed out at B92 TV journalist Brankica Stankovic.
Hard-core supporters chanted threats and insults while tossing around and puncturing an inflatable rubber effigy of Stankovic.
A recent TV documentary reported by Stankovic found that Partizan Belgrade fan leaders are suspected of serious crimes, including drug trafficking and murder, but remain free.
The Partizan Belgrade club and a government sports commission condemned the threats Friday.

| Juventus - Catania - 20/12/2009Source : Reuters Juventus risk stiff punishment after more racist chantsJuventus could face a stiff punishment after fans repeated the racist chants that led to a stadium ban last season in Sunday's 2-1 home defeat by Serie A strugglers Catania. Media reported that Juve fans chanted "there are no black Italians" during the Turin's side's third consecutive defeat in all competitions. Juve were forced to play a game behind closed doors last season after supporters directed the same chant at Inter Milan forward Mario Balotelli, an Italian of Ghanaian decent. There were fears Juve's match against Inter two weeks ago would have to be abandoned after their supporters again chanted against the black striker in the run-up to the game but the fans behaved on the night of their team's 2-1 win. Juve fans are angry about their third-placed team's poor form after last week's 3-1 defeat at Bari and a Champions League exit that came after a 4-1 drubbing from Bayern Munich. The team bus was hit by an egg on its way into the ground on Sunday while some home fans stood with their backs to the pitch during the game and targeted the club management in other chants. | |
