| 16 men arrested in Cheltenham - 08/02/2009
Source : thisisgloucestershire.co.uk
Police swooped on a Cheltenham pub on Saturday after a brawl broke out between football supporters.
The fight happened at the Moon under Water JD Wetherspoon pub in Bath Road where officers received at least one report of a man being kicked in the head.
16 arrests were made.
Cheltenham Police are now appealing for witnesses to the incident which took place at about 5.20pm.
The men aged between 18 and 41, all from Oxfordshire, were arrested on suspicion of public order offences.
They have all been bailed to return to Cheltenham Police Station on April 4, 2009.
No one was seriously injured during the incident but a 27-year-old man was treated at Cheltenham General Hospital for minor cuts to his face.
A witness to the fight said people were “running for their lives”.
Officers confirmed chairs and furniture were thrown around and a significant amount of damage was done to the pub.
People who were involved in the fighting fled along Bath Road and the High Street when the police arrived.
The football fans from Oxford had stopped in Cheltenham when a fixture had been postponed.
The pub was open again on Saturday evening and there seemed little sign of any damage, except for a crack in the glass front door.
The duty manager, who didn’t want to be named, confirmed that there had been an incident but said he wasn’t able to give any more details.

| Uefa riot suspects contact police - 09/02/2009Source : BBC News The names of more than 40 men suspected of being involved in rioting at last year's Uefa Cup Final have been given to police. Last month the images of 49 men were posted on the internet and featured on the BBC's Crimewatch programme. Disorder began before kick-off between Rangers and Zenit St Petersburg in Manchester last May. Police said a number of people who had recognised themselves in the pictures had come forward voluntarily. An estimated 150,000 Rangers fans descended on Manchester for the final on 14 May 2008. Rangers eventually lost the game by two goals to nil. Violence flared in the city when one of the large television screens set-up to allow fans without tickets to view the game failed. Police officers and supporters clashed in the streets, resulting in a number of injuries and criminal damage. After studying hours of CCTV footage Greater Manchester Police released pictures of the 49 people they wanted to trace. The images appeared on the force's website and footage of the rioting was posted on the sites YouTube, Facebook and Bebo. Police now have more than 40 names. Det Supt Geoff Wessell, who is leading the operation, said: "A small number of people have contacted the inquiry team identifying themselves and we are currently making arrangements to speak to these individuals in more detail." Photographs of 49 men are being released by police who want to trace them in connection with rioting at last year's Uefa Cup final in Manchester. | |

A police spokesman said: "There were a few incidents of sporadic disorder both inside and outside the ground, during and after the game, which resulted in a total of 12 people being arrested for public disorder and criminal damage."
Police had mounted a major intelligence operation for the match, to help find those involved with violence at Hull City last month.
Officers said they would film supporters in and around Elland Road to support Humberside Police's efforts to identify people involved in the disorder during the FA Cup tie between Hull City and Millwall on January 24.

| Fan banned for abusive chanting at Spurs ground - 12/02/2009
Source : Londra Gazete
A FOOTBALL fan has been slapped with a three year ban and a £500 fine for indecent chanting at a match featuring Tottenham Hotspur and Portsmouth in January.
23 year-old James Gray, a self-employed man from Worcester Park, Surrey, appeared at Tottenham Magistrates Court on 30 January and was given a £300 fine and three year football banning order for Section 4A words/behaviour to cause harassment/ alarm/ distress, and a £200 fine with £125 costs for possessing an intoxicating liquor in the view area of a sporting event on 18 January at Tottenham Hotspur Football Ground
Gray pleaded guilty to the offences prior to sentencing. Superintendent Graham Dean of Haringey Police said: "Unfortunately the disrespectful and offensive behaviour of just one individual can bring the game of football into disrepute. Not long into the match Gray's foul and abusive language was heard by nearby fans who were deeply offended and brought it to police attention. Gray was arrested and spent most of the game in a police cell."
"We will not tolerate abusive or violent behaviour and if people choose to behave in this way we will deal with them proactively and we will work with football clubs and the courts to obtain football banning orders."

| Manchester City fans ran amok at Middlesbrough game, court told - 12/02/2009
Source : Northern Echo
TWO Manchester City fans were banned from soccer grounds earlier today for running amok at Middlesbrough's Riverside Stadium Police were attacked and pelted with seats, coins and spat at by rampaging City supporters angry at their 8-1 Premiership defeat by Middlesbrough on May 11 last year.
Fans were filmed taunting police trying to hold them behind barriers, said prosecutor Harry Hadfield.
They were also angry at the pending departure of manager Sven Goren Eriksson.
Thomas Darcy, 43, a City season ticketholder for over 30 years, and John Whittaker, 27, who had drunk 10 bottles of lager on the car journey to Middlesbrough, were arrested after police circulated mugshots of 24 violent fans.
Darcy had a conviction in February 2006 for bring drunk at Aston Villa's ground, Teesside Crown Court was told.
Keith Thomas, defending, said that Darcy had been watching City since he was 11 and that a match ban would hit him hard.
He had watched 45 matches a season which totalled 1350 over 30 years.
David Lamb, defending Whittaker, said that he had no previous convictions and he was not a City fan but he bought a match ticket the night before the Middlesbrough game and he travelled there by road with friends.
He added: "He has no intention of ever attending a football match in the future."
The Recorder of Middlesbrough Judge Peter Fox QC who watched a 10-minute video and Sky footage of the marauding City fans said it was appalling mayhem.
The judge added: "These days it is very much more a family event with young persons present at the scene and at least able to see the sort of appalling behaviour that you were involved in, and that is why it will not be tolerated."
Darcy, unemployed, of Collingwood Way, West Houghton, Bolton, Greater Manchester, and Whittaker, a business developments manager, of Bower Grove, Stalybridge, Cheshire, pleaded guilty to affray.
Darcy was jailed for nine months with a six-year football banning order, and Whittaker was given a three month jail sentence suspended for two years with 200 hours unpaid work and a three-year banning order.

| Football yobs banned after brawl - 13/02/2009
Source : Forester
Three Cheltenham Town fans who brawled in the street hours after their team narrowly avoided relegation have been banned from football matches for three years.
Carlo Brown, Stephen Newman and James Temple were arrested in Cheltenham town centre in May last year, following Cheltenham’s last gasp 2-1 victory over Doncaster Rovers, which ensured their survival in League One.
Brown, 21, and 23-year-old Temple grappled with police as they were moved away from a group of Doncaster fans in Pittville Street.
Officers then spotted Newman, 25, throwing a punch after he was approached by a second group of supporters at the junction with Fairview Road.
The trio were each made to pay up to £400 in fines and court costs, and are now forbidden from entering the area surrounding Cheltenham Town’s Whaddon Road stadium on matchdays.
They will also have to surrender their passports to police before England away games.
Sentencing the three men at Cheltenham Magistrates’ Court, chairman of the bench Dorothy Marshall said: “You were involved in serious incidents of football hooliganism in the town centre on a day when a lot of families were out and about.
“Although you did not instigate the incidents, you should have left the area and not become involved. This has been a hard lesson for all of you.”
The court heard Brown, who pleaded guilty to a charge of public disorder, was arrested after he started to act aggressively and shouted “Come on then” to police officers who were attempting to break up a scuffle outside the Mbargo bar in Pittville Street.
Newman also pleaded guilty to his part in a separate fight, while Temple, who pleaded not guilty, was bitten by a police dog as he advanced on officers who were shouting at him to move away.
Two Doncaster fans were also given three-year bans for throwing punches during a brawl in North Place.
PC Mark Smith, Cheltenham police’s football intelligence officer, heralded the verdict as evidence of how officers are beginning to clamp down on football hooligans.
He said: “We are trying to make football safe for everybody who wants to go and enjoy it.
“These banning orders send out a strong message as to what can happen to those who indulge in disruption and violence on match days.”

| Police warning for Huddersfield Town v Leeds United game - 12/02/2009
Source : Huddersfield Daily
SOCCER fans are being urged to be on their best behaviour for Saturday’s huge derby game between Town and Leeds United.
But there was also a warning for a minority of the 20,000 fans expected at the game: Misbehave and we will track you down.
Police are gearing up for a huge operation to ensure the League I game at the Galpharm Stadium goes off without any trouble.
And they been helped by both clubs and by licensees in Huddersfield, who will not be opening pubs until later in the day.
The kick-off for the game has been brought forward to noon and strict ticketing arrangements have been brought in by the clubs.
Leeds have sold their allocation of 4,000 tickets for the stadium’s South Stand and police are confident the ticket schemes will prevent the problems of last season, when United fans were found in Huddersfield sections of the ground.
Some fans were ejected from sections of the ground and police warned the same action would be taken on Saturday if there were concerns.

| Australia : Football yobs face national ban - 14/02/2009
Source : Sunday Mail
VIOLENT football fans would be slapped with a nationwide ban from all leave A-League matches under a plan being considered by police and football officials.
SA Police have revealed they are considering the proposal following ugly clashes between thugs at Adelaide United and Melbourne Victory games.
Officers were forced to bring in horses and block streets after "disgraceful" fans began throwing flares, firecrackers and missiles after last weekend's A-league semi-final.
While police expressed anger at the violence, Adelaide United claimed it was nothing more than "pushing and shoving" and that "worse happens at the cricket".
Chief Inspector David O'Donovan, who is in charge of police at Hindmarsh Stadium, said they were in talks with the Football Federation of Australia in an effort to curb violence.
He said police were keeping records of those arrested or evicted and would consider banning them from future games. He also flagged a plan for nationwide bans.
"We are working with the federation and (the) venue operator to examine the viability of barring these people from future events," he said.
"This is occurring not only here in Adelaide but is being considered interstate."
Chief Insp Donovan said the level of disorder and violence at United and Victory games had increased noticeably at the past two games.
"The public, the Football Federation, the clubs and venue operators should all be very concerned about this disgraceful behaviour which has no place in Australian society.
"It creates great risk of harm or injury to police and the majority of law-abiding fans who attend the football."
The violence has involved only Adelaide supporters and their Victorian rivals.
Chief Insp O'Donovan said there was a significant cost in time and resources needed to control fans at Hindmarsh.
Last week, a Melbourne teenager was treated for a cut to the head after he was hit with a bottle near the Channel 7 studios. Police separated troublemakers from jeering crowds as fans hurled flares.
But Adelaide United spokesman Dom Rinaldo said the club had "moved on" from last week's violence.
"That's dead and buried," he said. "It was just a bit of pushing and shoving." He said the club was more than happy to have troublemakers banned.
FFA spokeswoman Bonita Mersiades said the federation was prepared to ban fans with a proven history of misbehaving.
"Not only could they be banned from the Hyundai games throughout Australia, but also other FFA games including Socceroos matches," she said.

Le Havre fan arrested over racism
A Le Havre fan has been arrested by police for shouting racist insults to Ghana and Lyon defender John Mensah in the champions' 3-1 home win against the bottom club.
Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas broke the news after the game.
"Around the 55th minute, a so-called Le Havre fan has been arrested by police because he had been shouting racist insults to John Mensah," Aulas said.
"It started during the warm-up and it went on during the whole first half."
Coach Claude Puel (pictured with Mensah) added: "John was shocked. He heard some scandalous words."
Mensah was sent off for a second bookable offence 20 minutes from time and Puel said he should have replaced him because the player was too upset to play.
"It's my fault, I should have substituted him before," he said.

| Away fans banned from Ajax-Feyenoord games - 19/02/2009
Source : The Associated Press
Ajax and Feyenoord have banned one another's fans from traveling to matches between the Dutch football powers for the next five seasons following ongoing violence and abusive chants.
The decision was announced late Wednesday at the headquarters of the Dutch Football Association following talks between the clubs and the mayors of Amsterdam and Rotterdam, home of Ajax and Feyenoord respectively.
It means only fans from the home team will be allowed to attend matches between the teams.
On Sunday, police in Amsterdam arrested 30 fans for throwing bottles before Ajax beat Feyenoord 2-0 in the league.
"It might seem extreme, but we warned fans beforehand we'd had enough," Amsterdam mayor Job Cohen told Dutch broadcaster NOS.
Feyenoord said on its Web site that despite the warnings hooligans had been involved in violence and verbal abuse.
"The best efforts of both clubs and police have not managed to maintain the peace at recent matches," the club said. "The mayors, clubs and football association believe we need this cooling off period."
The fan ban will be reviewed after two seasons.
Ajax and Feyenoord fans share a long history of animosity and violence.
In March 1997, an Ajax fan was beaten to death in a battle between supporters of the two clubs in the town of Beverwijk. The rival hooligans had arranged to meet there to avoid heavy police presence at Ajax's stadium in Amsterdam.
