Colombia: Football fan beaten to death - 29/07/2008

Source: http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au

COLOMBIAN police said today they had arrested five football fans on suspicion of beating to death a rival supporter, who got on their bus by mistake after a match in Bogota.

Police said fans of America, which had just defeated Independiente Santa Fe 2-1, got on the Santa Fe supporters bus believing it was theirs.

Santa Fe fans attacked the group, lashing out and throwing stones at them.

"Three managed to get away, but one of them fell and was beaten up, bringing about his death,'' a police spokesman said.

Early last month, a supporter of Santa Fe was killed in another skirmish with an America fan.

concerning this game, benfica lads, around 80, take over the city of Vila Real de Santo António, in Algarve, and were looking for Sporting lads all the time! We may say that the lads from Algarve of Juventude Leonina, one of the Sporting ultra groups, are on of the strong groups inside Juve Leo, and they certanly didnt expected that Benfica lads cause many trouble as they did! Some of the episodes are: Benfica lads stolen 2 times (lol) the same banner, the main one study , from Directivo Ultras XXI, other of Sporting ultra groups! 2 times because in the first one Sporting little fuckers run to the police and said that they were hardly beaten and that they lost their material! ACAB came ofter Benfica and identified 32 of our lads, and took them to police station! The banner returns to Directivo but a little time after Directivo faced one grupo of Benfica lads that didnt go arested, and again, they lost the banner, this time not returned! Many Benfica lads go to police station to meet the other lads that wre inside! Mean while some Sporting Casual lads, go to police station to have a barbecue with us, bur the problem is that Police undercover agents where with them, because there are many relations beetween Sporting and cops, very strange thing, bur that is other question! We go to them bur as we expected, cops were on our back! As many other times, cops where side my side with Sporting!
The only one´s who pretend to have some fun are always the same, BENFICA CASUALS, NO NAME BOYS!

Australia: Manly supporter evicted - 28/07/2008

Source: http://www.news.com.au/

A SPECTATOR was apprehended and thrown out of yesterday's match at the Sydney Football Stadium for throwing a plastic bottle at referee Jason Robinson.

The incident took place 10 minutes before halftime when Robinson was near the sideline. The bottle landed on the sideline but not near him.

It is understood the man faces a fine and a possible ban from attending matches at the SFS. The NRL will investigate the incident.

"It is unfortunate people like this come to the football,'' Roosters chief executive Brian Canavan said. "He was dealt with by authorities. We don't want these people coming to our games. He was a Manly fan too from what I hear - he didn't have a very good day.''

Robinson blew more than 20 penalties for the game - frustrating the players and crowd. "I think it was about 24 or 25 penalties - I don't think that was called for,'' said Manly coach Des Hasler.

"I think we might have finished on the right side of the ledger but it was way too many penalties.''

80 People Injured in Pro-Karadzic Riots - 29/07/2008

Source : Courrier des Balkans

Up to 80 people were treated for injuries in Belgrade hospitals following Tuesday's protest against the arrest of former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic.

Various Belgrade hospitals were treating 51 police officers while 23 members of the civilians were also being seen to after sustaining injuries.

Reporters from Spanish television and Belgrade private news agency Beta, were among those hurt, hospitals said Wednesday.

The riots started as a group of protesters, identified as "football hooligans," attacked police during a rally organised by right-wing Radical Party, triggering clashes which lasted for more than an hour.

"We are gathering information, we are identifying the rioters," Serbia’s top prosecutor Slobodan Radovanovic said, adding that "arrests will follow."

Serbian police fired tear gas at the stone-hurling and flare-throwing protesters, as some 16,000 people gathered in Belgrade's main square Tuesday.

The protest was backed by the Democratic Party of Serbia - the party of former Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica as well as hardline nationalist movements including Obraz and Movement 1389.

Aleksandar Vucic, a Radical Party leader called for Tadic's government to be overthrown. "Thank you for showing that Serbia is not dead, although it is being killed by Boris Tadic," Vucic told the crowd. "Thieves and bandits are ruling Serbia."

"We will fight for Serbia and Serbia will be free," he added, to thunderous applause and chants of "Uprising, Uprising!"

Pro-European President Boris Tadic of Serbia warned the demonstrators to remain peaceful.

"Everyone has the right to demonstrate, but they should know that law and order will be respected," Tadic said Tuesday.

Hooligans, riot police clash at pro-Karadzic rally in Belgrade - 30/07/2008

Source: AFP

BELGRADE — Stone-throwing hooligans clashed in Belgrade Tuesday with Serbian riot police who replied with rubber bullets and tear gas after a rally against Radovan Karadzic’s looming war crimes transfer.

The violence erupted at the end of the ultra-nationalist protest rally in Belgrade’s main downtown square, which drew more than 15,000 hardliners opposed to the arrest a week ago of the Bosnian Serb genocide suspect.

Karadzic, in custody in a Belgrade prison cell after his arrest in the capital on July 21, is fighting a legal battle against his transfer to the U.N. war crimes tribunal in The Hague.

But rumors swirled in Belgrade that his transfer would happen in the coming hours, although this could not be confirmed.

Once he arrives in The Hague, Karadzic is to be tried for some of the bloodiest atrocities in Europe since World War II, namely the siege of the Bosnian capital Sarajevo and the Srebrenica massacre.

At the end of the rally organized by the ultra-nationalist Radical Party, around 100 hooligans, most of them drunk teenagers, broke away and swarmed on the riot police, hurling stones and firecrackers at them.

They continued to hurl whatever they could get their hands on at the security forces despite calls for them to refrain from doing so by Radical Party leader Tomislav Nikolic during his closing speech.

“Do not do it, children, we did not gather for that, we do not want to destroy Belgrade, but rather Boris Tadic,” he said, referring to the pro-Western Serbian president his party accuses of treachery over Karadzic’s arrest.

The riot police responded with rubber bullets and tear gas, driving back and trying to disperse the youths, many of them in hooded sports tops, into streets surrounding the Republic Square.

Many were injured, among them 13 police and 15 civilians, including a Spanish journalist.

After almost half an hour of skirmishes, the rioters were dispersed, and an eerie calm returned to downtown Belgrade with police still holding cordons to prevent hooligans from regrouping again.

The streets where the clashes took place were covered with debris and broken glass, while a pile of plastic beer bottles were seen laying in front of the police.

Another anti-riot unit was positioned in front of the McDonalds restaurant in central Belgrade avenue Terazije, which was virtually destroyed in rioting in February against Kosovo’s declaration of independence.

Then, 150,000 demonstrators protested Kosovo’s declaration of independence from Serbia in a demonstration that sparked attacks on Western embassies, rioting and looting that left one youth dead.

The rally on Tuesday had began around three hours before the unrest with Serbian nationalist songs played as the crowd chanted Karadzic’s name.

In his speech, Nikolic said Tadic “must not decide who will be free and who will be in prison, not for a month, not for a day.”

Karadzic’s brother Luka, for his part, used the rally to call on the Belgrade government to try him in Serbia.

“It is still not late to give up extradition, for Radovan to be tried here. This will be an honorable way to get out of it, both them (Serbia) and the international community,” he said.

Karadzic was arrested on July 21 while on a suburban bus in Belgrade, after more than a decade on the run disguised as a alternative health specialist in “human quantum energy.”

The speculation that his transfer to the The Hague was imminent came after Karadzic’s legal team succeeded in delaying his transfer to the U.N. tribunal there at least for another day.

Karadzic’s appeal against his transfer, apparently sent at the last minute on Friday, had not arrived by the end of the day, said Ivana Ramic, the spokeswoman for its intended recipients at Serbia’s war crimes court.

Once it is received, a three-judge panel of the court has three days to decide on its merits before the justice ministry issues a final order for the transfer.

But Dusan Ignjatovic, head of the Serbian government office for cooperation with the U.N. tribunal, expressed doubts about the appeal, which Karadzic’s brother Luka has said was sent by regular mail.

While in hiding, Karadzic completely changed his appearance and identity, styling himself as Doctor Dragan Dabic and sporting large spectacles, long white hair and a bushy beard.

Eagles game is moved to Friday - 30/07/2008

Source: scottish press

ABERDEEN were today forced to switch the final match of their Dutch tour from Saturday afternoon to Friday night.

The clash with Go Ahead Eagles has also been moved to the town of Terwolde after Dutch police refused to allow the clubs to play at Deventer.

It means the Dons will now end their tour with a hectic schedule of games tomorrow, Thursday and Friday.

The Dutch police acted after riots involving Ajax fans had marred Jaap Stam's farewell match against his first club FC Zwolle last weekend.

Deventer, which also comes into their jurisdiction, is also due to stage a gala day on Saturday and the police decided they didn't want that marred by possible trouble involving fans from Go Ahead, who have a notorious reputation in Holland.

Aberdeen scrap Dutch friendly over fan violence fears

Aberdeen's friendly with Go-Ahead Eagles in Holland has been scrapped completely amid fears of crowd trouble.

The match was set to take place on Saturday but Dutch police raised concerns following violence which erupted after Jaap Stam's testimonial last week.

A Friday night fixture in the nearby village of Terwolde was then mooted as a possible alternative but the plug was pulled on those plans at a meeting this morning.

A spokesman for Go-Ahead Eagles confirmed: "The game is totally postponed now because there is a fear of trouble between supporters of both teams.

"There was a problem in Deventer where about 50 or 60 people caused a lot of trouble and the police are worried some of these guys would cause trouble at this game. That's the reason the game is not going ahead.

"We were looking to play the game in Terwolde but, this morning, the major of that village said he doesn't want to take the chance after those problems."

Aberdeen face Vitesse Arnhem tonight, before taking on amateurs Rietvogels tomorrow.

The Go-Ahead spokesman added: "We are very sad about it. We asked for this game four months ago and it was all agreed and everything was good.

"Then, with three days to go, the police received information that there could be more than 100 Aberdeen fans in Holland and the game was cancelled."

DVD evidence of Coventry City football hooligans - 31/07/2008

Source : Coventry Telegraph

A COVENTRY court has been shown DVD footage of brawling football fans following violent clashes ahead of Coventry's match against Leicester City last season.

A total of eight men and three juveniles appeared at Coventry magistrates court yesterday to face charges relating to the incident in Earlsdon on February 23, which involved violent clashes between up to 100 rival football fans.

The court appearances follow a three-month police operation, entitled Operation Net News, launched following the violence by officers based at Chace Avenue police station in Willenhall.

It is believed the violence, which left members of the public fleeing for their safety, was prearranged by the rival supporters.

Officers have trawled through CCTV footage and a number of arrests were also made during a series of dawn raids in both Coventry and Leicester.

Yesterday three 17-year-old boys appeared before the city's youth court to face charges of affray. All three, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty and will be sentenced at Coventry Youth Court on August 20.

In the afternoon, the Coventry men who have been charged in connection with the violence appeared before District Judge David Stott.

Daniel Healy, aged 21, of Ridgley Road, Tile Hill; Sean O'Sullivan, aged 26, of Walsgrave Road, Stoke; Asher Gordon, aged 27, of Lorenzo Close, Willenhall; and Luke Murphy, of Longford Road, Longford all appeared to face charges of violent disorder.

Due to the serious nature of the offences, they will all appear again at Coventry Magistrates Court, where their cases will be sent to Coventry Crown Court.

All but O'Sullivan were released on conditional bail. O'Sullivan has been remanded in custody.

Sean Corcoran, aged 19, of Daventry Road, Cheylesmore, pleaded guilty to affray and will appear before Coventry Crown Court on August 22 to be sentenced.

Marcus Richardson, aged 19, of Ingram Road, Earlsdon also pleaded guilty to affray and will also be sentenced on August 22.

Committing Richardson for sentence, District Judge David Stott referred to the video footage.

He said: "You were clearly seen concealing yourself. You were throwing things, shouting and you made no effort to distance yourself. You were thoroughly enjoying yourself and there is a price to pay. You will go to the crown court to be sentenced."

Identical twins Ashley and Aaron Walton, aged 20, of Aldermoor Lane, Stoke Aldermoor and John Hartley, aged 39, of Pleydell Close, Willenhall appeared in the dock together, being represented by the same solicitor.

All three pleaded guilty to affray and were released on conditional bail before being sentenced on August 22 at Coventry Crown Court.

Addressing the trio, District Judge Stott added: "In view of the nature of the incident and in view of your parts in it, this is too serious to be dealt with in this court. You will be committed to be sentenced at the crown court."

A total of 24 Leicester fans are due to appear at Coventry Magistrates Court today to face charges in relation to the incident.

A police presence will be outside the court in anticipation of any further trouble.

Croatian Fans Clash with Police

A group of Croatian supporters clashed with local police in yesterday’s UEFA cup football match between Birkirkara and HNK Hjaduk Split.

The Police at the Ta' Qali national stadium intervened after some Croatian individuals set fire to several seats in their area. Efforts to restore order degenerated into skirmishes when Croatian fans physically assaulted the police.

Members of the S.A.G entered the fray and the situation was brought under control after the forces of order unleashed their batons.

Seven Croatian supporters were arrested. They are to be brought to court in the coming days.

Incident brings back memories of Malta-Croatia match: Seven Hajduk fans arrested

There was an incident which brought back memories of the incidents when Croatian supporters had caused a lot of damage to the Ta' Qali Stadium after a drawn match between Malta and Croatia.

It was the 58th minute of the match when some of the about 150 Croatian club's supporters set fire to some seats at the 'Valletta' side of the Enclosure. The police seemed to have quickly taken control of the situation. At least, that was how it seemed, but after a few minutes trouble erupted again with Police Assistant Commissioner Josie Brincat being fiercely attacked and even thrown to the ground after trying to clam down the situation. Special Assignment Group members had to defend themselves by using their batons after also being attacked by some of the fans when trying to defend Brincat. At least two of the beaten fans were apprehended and led out of the stand handcuffed. Police reports later confirmed that seven Hajduk fans were arrested.

Before the end of the match, a club official addressed the fans on the stadium's PA system telling them to stay in their area at the end of the match and to obey police orders on their way out. The fans were cornered at their own end for about 30 minutes before they were escorted out of the Stadium and driven to the airtport by police transport and kept under strict surveillance.

The Hajduk club is obviously fearing disciplinary action by UEFA which might also impose a heavy fine among other measures.

After the incidents in the Malta-Croatia match two years ago, UEFA had imposed a heavy fine and also ordered the Croatian FA to pay all the damages, which amounted to around e23,000 .

Football yob barred from every ground in UK - 31/07/2008

Source: http://www.hamiltonadvertiser.co.uk/

A TEENAGE yob from Larkhall has been banned from every football ground in the United Kingdom following his arrest at the UEFA Cup final in Manchester.

Gary Johnson (17), of Hawick Crescent, is one of five so-called fans who received Football Banning Orders last week at Hamilton and Glasgow Sheriff Courts.

Johnson, who is also known as Gary Stephen Johnston, is not allowed to attend any game in Britain for the next three years.

His order also states he must attend police stations and surrender his passport during relevant overseas football fixtures.

Stephen House, the Chief Constable of Strathclyde Police, was the named applicant on the Football Banning Order against Johnson.

The police made the move to obtain the orders following the violence which marred Zenit St Petersburg’s victory in the UEFA Cup Final against Rangers on May 14.

According to the banning order, Johnson was arrested following an incident inside the City of Manchester Stadium.

The report stated: “Zenit St Petersburg had scored a goal in the cup final and stewards within the stadium escorted a Zenit fan from the pitch.

“As he was being escorted, the respondent (Gary Johnson) was seen to stand up and throw what looked like an empty plastic bottle at the other male.

“The respondent initially claimed someone else had thrown it. He was arrested and subsequently admitted throwing the plastic bottle.”

Johnson was made the subject of a three-year Football Banning Order on May 23 at Manchester City Magistrates Court.

However, the order is not enforceable in Scotland.

Consequently, Strathclyde Police moved to ban Johnson from all games in Scotland and Sheriff Donald Ferguson granted the application last week.

Stewart McCardle (18 ), from Rydal Place, East Kilbride, was also banned by the Sheriff last Wednesday, July 23.

Last Friday, July 25, the police succeeded in getting a further three Football Banning Orders at Glasgow Sheriff Court against three Glasgow men.

Chief Superintendent Robin Howe commented: “I welcome the news that these Football Banning Orders have been granted.

“Antisocial behaviour around matches will not be tolerated and we will continue to target those groups of people who cause trouble in the lead up to, during, and after matches.

“This sends a strong message to those who think they can continue to be disruptive and disorderly when going to football matches and we will take all necessary steps to prevent these individuals from ruining the sport for everyone else with their antisocial behaviour.”

A spokesman for Rangers Football Club added: “We fully endorse the action taken by Strathclyde Police to secure Football Banning Orders against these individuals.

“From the outset, we have said anyone involved in the disturbances would be banned from Ibrox indefinitely and the club supports the strongest action taken against those whose actions undermined the good behaviour of the overwhelming majority of supporters who travelled to Manchester for the UEFA Cup Final.”

Preston: Two men banned from football grounds for homophobic chanting - 31/07/2008

Source: http://www.pinknews.co.uk

Two Preston North End fans have been banned from the club's ground for a year and fined by magistrates after they were convicted of public order offences after chanting homophobic slogans during a game in Blackpool in March.

23-year-old Michael Whittle and Lee Walker, 24, both from Preston, were also banned from Blackpool FC's ground.

PC Lindsey Nottingham, the LGBT liaison officer for Blackpool, told The Citizen:

"Having been part of the policing operation at Bloomfield Road (Blackpool FC's ground) that day, I can confirm that the nature of some of the chants from the Preston North End fans were derogatory and insulting to members of Blackpool’s LGBT community.

"As such, I later identified Whittle and Walker as being two of the males responsible for instigating and fuelling the chants.

"Their subsequent prosecution and conviction sends out a clear message that there is no place for homophobia either in Blackpool or in the game of football."

Nine Blackpool FC fans were banned from their home ground for shouting homophobic and racist abuse during the same match against Preston.

Blackpool fans made racist chants mocking the high proportion of Asians that live in Preston.

Two Blackpool fans were convicted of shouting racial chants at the match.

The start of the 2007/08 season saw a change in football ground regulations with homophobic abuse now punishable.

Blackpool is well known for its gay scene and attracts thousands of gay travellers every year.

The FA is under increasing pressure to show their opposition to homophobic behaviour.

It was condemned for refusing to investigate the behaviour of Paul Scholes, who allegedly called a referee a "fucking poof."

The lesbian and gay pressure group OutRage! has accused the Chief Executive of the Football Association, Brian Barwick, of "arrogance, rudeness and inaction against homophobia."

However, there have been a number of recent campaigns to crack down on racist and homophobic behaviour during football games.

The FA states on its website:

"Male or female, an individual's sexual orientation should never be a barrier to people taking part in - and enjoying - our national sport.

"As the guardian of the game in this country, The FA is uniquely placed to tackle issues such as homophobia.

"We can create a supportive, open and inclusive environment by supporting the professional clubs and through our County FA network, which reaches out to every community in the land.

"Conversely, we can - and will continue to - amend the laws of the game to outlaw homophobic behaviour."

The FA and the Gay Football Supporters Network last year launched a joint initiative to get gay liaison officers into all 92 league clubs to implement the new ground regulations banning homophobic abuse.

In May a campaign was launched to help stamp out homophobia in British football.

It aims to "vindicate the memory of Justin Fashanu, the world’s first openly gay professional footballer."

A spokesperson for the campaign said:

"The FA, in conjunction with Stonewall and the GFSN, are fighting anti-gay prejudice on the terraces, looking to stamp out the kind of chants that haunted Justin.

"But ten years after his death, which the football world refused to mark, there are still no openly gay professional players or managers."

A 2006 survey found out that 57% of footballers think that football is homophobic.

The aim of the Justin Campaign is to get the FA to observe Saturday 2nd May 2009 as Justin Fashanu Day.
