Football fans clash at rail station
ELEVEN men have been arrested after violence broke out before Tuesday evening's first "friendly" match of the season between Southampton and Salisbury City football clubs.
Up to 30 Saints and City fans clashed at South Western Road near Salisbury Railway Station just after 6pm.
Police were called in and arrested 10 men at the scene, while another was later arrested at the Raymond McEnhill Stadium, where the match kicked off at 7.45pm. advertisement
David McMullin, Salisbury sector commander for Wiltshire Police, said: "This was an unusual incident, especially as it was a friendly match. We responded promptly and effectively and the match went off without any problems."
There was no violence at the match itself, which Southampton won 3-0.
The eleven men were all arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and taken to Salisbury Police Station for questioning.
Any witnesses are being asked to contact Salisbury Police on 0845 4087000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

| Football thugs found guilty following Chelsea v Spurs clash - 16/07/2008
Source: http://www.metro.co.uk
Two thugs who took part in a savage mass brawl following a football match have been found guilty of violent disorder.
Police described the violence which followed the FA Cup quarter-final between Chelsea and Tottenham in March 2007 as 'staggering'.
Up to 100 men armed with knives, broken bottles, baseball bats, pool cues and an ice hockey stick fought a pitched battle outside a pub in the affluent Parsons Green area of south-west London, after the three-all draw at nearby Stamford Bridge.
More than 30 were arrested, and six taken to hospital with stab wounds and head injuries.

| Toon fan caught after throwing bottle at Ronaldo - 15/07/2008Source: http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk DNA left on a Coke bottle hurled at Cristiano Ronaldo led police to this Toon fan. But Liam Thompson has escaped a stadium ban despite admitting chucking the missile at the Manchester United star in anger. Thompson, of Kelso Gardens, Denton Burn, Newcastle, pelted his pop at Ronaldo after the Portuguese ace scored against the Magpies at St James’s Park. The 25-year-old window fitter thought he’d got away with it but referee Chris Foy handed the bottle to police who sent it off for tests. The results came back and matched samples given by Thompson when he was arrested nine years ago. Now he has became the second person to be convicted of throwing items at Ronaldo, following Tony Heslop, also trapped by his DNA. But, unlike Heslop, 18, Thompson was not hit with a football banning order after a judge ruled his behaviour fell short of what should lead to a stadium ban. Edith Sanderson, prosecuting, said: “On Saturday, February 23, Newcastle Untied played Manchester United. “Cristiano Ronaldo scored in the final minutes. At that time, he and some of his teammates made their way towards the corner and they began to celebrate the goal. “Two plastic bottles were thrown. They didn’t hit or injure anyone but they landed nearby Mr Ronaldo. They were sent off and a DNA match was found on one of the bottles.” Mrs Sanderson told the court Thompson had admitted the offence in interview, saying he was furious at Ronaldo’s over-elaborate celebrations. While Mrs Sanderson told of the moment Ronaldo scored, fellow fan District Judge Stephen Earl cut in and said: “Yes, don’t remind me, you don’t need to go into it.” Thompson was fined £200 after admitting throwing an article on to the pitch and faced a three-year football banning order. But Judge Earl said: “You are a lucky man because in fact I am not going to make a football banning order. “In the circumstances, I do not think it is necessary to prevent further behaviour of this type and the reality, therefore, in the circumstances of this offence, is, much as I would not wish to condone your actions, it doesn’t turn it into a football banning order case. “There are many types of behaviour that warrant an order and this one falls just short but what I would say is that it is now on your record and I am sure you will think twice about this sort of behaviour in the future.” Thompson offered to pay-off his fine at a rate of £20 a week, but Judge Earl rejected that after learning the defendant spends £40 a week on booze. He said: “At least you are honest about that. So, you are prepared to pay just half of what you spend on alcohol a week. I have got a good one – I’ll take this at £50 a week. Perhaps you will buy less Coke and with the season coming up, I would like you to have cleared this before the season starts.” Heslop, of Arrow Close, Killingworth, threw a bottle on the pitch at the same game and was traced when DNA matched samples he had given when he was caution for taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent as a youth. He was hit with a £155 court bill and a three-year football banning order. | |

| Celtic thug jailed by Spanish court for Barcelona attacks to be sent back to Glasgow - 16/07/2008
Source: http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/
A CELTIC fan has been sentenced to four years in jail by a Spanish court for two drink-fuelled Champions League attacks.
The teenage Hoops supporter battered two men with beer jugs ahead of a match against Barcelona.
The 19-year-old - known only as John D - appeared in court last week after spending more than four months behind bars.
Now he is set to be sent back home to Glasgow to serve the rest of his prison term.
A court heard how the thug assaulted a drinker and a bar owner on March 3 - hours before the clash at the Nou Camp.
He had been drinking with his dad and eight fellow fans in a pub in the town of Sabadell - 15 miles from Barcelona.
In a bar called Sinfo, he grabbed a half-litre beer jug and smashed it across the head of a local man. He then crashed a second glass over the head of the stunned bar owner, who had attempted to break up the fight.
Both victims required stitches in hospital - and the fan was quickly arrested.
He was later identified by three witnesses and has been held in Can Brians jail since then.
Last week, the teenager was jailed for four years for the attacks.
It emerged his family had paid £2300 in compensation to the victims, which helped to reduce his sentence.
A court source said: "The expectation is that in the short term, he will be placed in a prison in Scotland."

| Columbus Crew (USA) - West Ham United - friendly - 20/07/2008Source : Times Online Crowd violence erupts on West Ham United's US tourA violent half-time brawl between more than 100 fans marred West Ham United's friendly with Columbus Crew in Ohio yesterday. The fights, which overshadowed West Ham's 3-1 win, began when a handful of the Premier League club's supporters entered the north-east corner of the stadium where the MLS team's most boisterous supporters were gathered. Rival groups began directing chants toward each other and fights quickly broke out between more than 100 Crew fans and at least 30 West Ham supporters. The clashes were eventually stopped when Columbus police officers and Crew Stadium security staff moved in to separate the groups. Highway Patrol officers arrested one fan outside the stadium for disorderly conduct, but Columbus police were unable to confirm whether any arrests had been made inside the stadium. It is the second incident Crew supporters have been involved in this season. In May, a fan was reported to have shouted a racial slur at Kheli Dube, the New England forward, after he scored a later winner at the ground. The incident prompted a league investigation, with Don Garber, the MLS commissioner, saying that the fan will be banned from league games for life if officials were able to identify him from a video that captured it. ************************************************************* Source : Soccer America Fan melee mars Crew-West Ham friendly in Columbus One of the worst incidents of fan trouble involving an MLS club took place Sunday when the friendly between the Columbus Crew and English club West Ham United was marred by a melee between rival fans that broke out at halftime. More than 100 fans were reported to have taken part in the scuffle that began when fans shouted at each other. The confrontation later moved to the stadium concourse. There was no confirmation on the number of fans arrested inside the stadium. Trouble is nothing new to Crew and West Ham fans. MLS Commissioner Don Garber vowed to ban a Crew fan for life after he shouted a racial slur at the New England Revolution's South African forward, Kheli Dube, after he scored late in an MLS game earlier this season. West Ham fans have a long history of hooliganism. The 2005 movie Green Street Hooligans is the story of a group of West Ham supporters. According to the Columbus Dispatch, Hammer fans unfurled a banner that read " ICF, 30 Years Undefeated" during the second half of Sunday's game. ICF (the Inter City Firm) was one of the most notorious fan groups during the 1970s and 1980s. | British police on lookout for hooligans as West Ham tours North America - 23/07/2008
Source : The Canadian Press
British police are seeking to identify West Ham supporters who may be stirring up trouble on the English Premier League club's pre-season tour of North America.
There was a halftime scuffle among spectators at West Ham's 3-1 win over the Columbus Crew in a friendly match on Sunday. West Ham will also play against the Major League Soccer all-stars, who include former England captain David Beckham, on Thursday night at BMO Field in Toronto.
MLS spokesperson Will Kuhns said league officials are aware of the altercation over the weekend, but don't feel it will impact the all-star game.
"We've been working together with Toronto FC and MLSE (Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment) for several months and we're very confident the fans will create and enjoy a very festive, positive atmosphere on Thursday night," he said.
Daniel Hursit, an officer from the British Transport Police Headquarters in London, contacted North American media on Tuesday looking for pictures or video of the incident in Columbus.
The officer, the National Football Banning Order Officer, said fans spotted in the pictures may be banned by British authorities from attending matches either in Britain or abroad for a minimum of two years. It could also help them identify any "potential offenders."
He said that for major international events, such as the European Championship in Switzerland and Austria earlier this summer, banned hooligans must surrender their passports at their local police station for the duration of the competition, which prevents them leaving Britain to attend matches.
"We can't do that for friendlies like the one in Columbus, so they could be fans who are banned, or not banned yet or who may be part of the hooligan element who are starting to create disorder," he said.
He said photos and video of incidents are "good intelligence" that police can use to apply to the courts for a banning order against a suspected hooligan.
Reports said about 30 West Ham fans and 100 Crew supporters clashed and some punches were thrown. One spectator was arrested outside the stadium. No injuries were reported.
Columbus management downplayed the incident in a statement on Tuesday, saying it was exaggerated by the media.
"While a skirmish among a very small group of West Ham and Crew supporters did occur on Sunday, media reports referring to it as a 'brawl' or 'fights' are gross mischaracterizations," the statement said.
It said three West Ham fans entered the Crew supporters' section at halftime. Security officers were escorting them out when Crew fans got involved.
"On the concourse, Columbus police quickly assumed control of the situation and made one arrest," it added. He said most of the spectators in the area were bystanders.
It said three fans were ejected from the stadium and order was restored by the time play resumed.

| Rangers fans given banning orders over cup violence - 26/07/2008
Source : The Herald
Scotland's largest police force has succeeded in obtaining Football Banning Orders (FBOs) against five men involved in the violence in Manchester on the day of Rangers' Uefa Cup final defeat.
Strathclyde Police said the individuals were arrested by officers from Greater Manchester Police on May 14 following a number of incidents in the city during the game.
Two of the so-called "soccer Asbos" were granted at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Wednesday.
A further three were granted yesterday at Glasgow Sheriff Court.
No detail of the individuals involved was released. The men will be banned from all Scottish football grounds for at least three years.
Chief Superintendent Robin Howe, who has led several delegations of officers from the Glasgow-based force at Rangers' away games in the UK and abroad, welcomed the FBOs.
He said: "Anti-social behaviour around matches will not be tolerated and we will continue to target those groups of people who cause trouble in the lead up to, during, and after matches."
A spokesman for Rangers added: "From the outset, we have said anyone involved in the disturbances would be banned indefinitely from Ibrox and the club supports the strongest action taken."

| Football hooligans attacked the police - 26/07/2008Source : ChronicleLive SHOCKING details of derby-day violence can today be revealed as we expose two football yobs who brought shame on the Toon Army. A court heard a harrowing account of a 300-strong Magpies mob pelting missiles at police and rival fans in a city centre rampage. The rioting took place after Newcastle United’s victory over Sunderland at St James’s Park, as officers tried to usher Black Cats supporters to the city’s train station. But they came up against a gang of United louts intent on breaking through the police cordon and attacking their opponents. Now two of the mob have been convicted for their part in the disorder of Sunday, April 20. Newcastle magistrates heard how Craig Armstrong, 27, of Benwell, Newcastle, hurled a rock at police before trying to disappear into the crowd. And Raymond Etchells, 34, was seen pushing a wheelie bin at an officer before picking up a table from outside a bar a throwing it at the police line. Andrew Waters, prosecuting Armstrong, of Elliot House, Bentinck Terrace, said: “This matter is one following the derby between Newcastle and Sunderland on April 20. “On the day, it was a high-profile derby match that took place on the afternoon, and after the game there was a large-scale operation to keep the fans segregated and take the Sunderland fans to the station.” Mr Waters added: “Fans were being moved away from the ground and there were two to three hundred there, pushing against the police, and it was quite a scary environment to be in. “In this case, it moved to Barrack Road, then St James’s Boulevard and on to Neville Street, by Central Station. “Missiles were being thrown at the officers – bottles, stones and cones. An awful lot of stuff was raining down and several officers were seen being hit. “As far as this defendant is concerned, he ran out of the top of Pink Lane and threw a rock towards the police line and moved back out of sight.” But Armstrong had been spotted and was arrested at Central Station. He admitted using threatening words or behaviour with intent to cause harassment, alarm or distress at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court. Despite being on a suspended sentence at the time of the incident, he was given a conditional discharge after pleading guilty but was hit with a three-year football banning order preventing him from going to any game in England and Wales. Etchells, of Derwent Tower, Dunston, Gateshead, was also part of the mob moving from St James’s Park to Central Station. He was first spotted by an officer who recognised him with an object in his hand. He was warned about his behaviour and dropped the item. But, just minutes later, he rammed a large industrial-sized wheelie bin into an officer before picking up a metal table from outside the Lounge bar on Neville Street and hurling it at the police line. He was tracked to the station and arrested. Etchells pleaded guilty to affray but the case was adjourned for pre-sentence reports to be prepared. He will appear again later this month, when a decision on whether to give him a football banning order will be made. Trouble flared into the night of the derby, won 2-0 by Newcastle, as drunk fans fought with each other and caused criminal damage. Immediately after the fixture, officers had to use horses to drive back Newcastle supporters who were taunting their rivals. At the time, police said they made 14 arrests before, during and after the game. Sgt Glenn Patterson said: “These court results should send a message that we will not tolerate any form of football-related disorder.” | |

| Cyprus : Seminar prepares police for football season - 26/07/2008
Source : Cyprus Mail
THE POLICE are preparing for the new football season with a two-day seminar focussing on the implementation of new legislation for the combat and prevention of violence at sporting events.
The seminar, which ended yesterday, took place at the Police Academy in Nicosia.
It was attended by high-ranking senior officers, members of the MMAD Rapid Response Unit and police psychologists, and was overseen by the National Office for Information Gathering on Hooliganism.
Among the issues discussed were dealing with violent hooligans, crowd control, missile throwing, the use of flares and illegal lighting of fires.
Also present were MPs Ionas Nicolaou and Aristophanis Georgiou, who had direct involvement in the drafting of the new legislation.
On June 27, Parliament unanimously approved legislation which hopes to tackle football hooliganism and violence in sporting areas.
Among other things, the law provides for the installation of cameras in all first division stadiums and specified seating for fans so that the arenas do not become overcrowded, as well as a minimum number of exits allowed.
Courts are also authorised to ban unruly fans from attending sporting events.
Stewards will be employed during matches to keep an eye on supporters, while there will be tougher police checks on fans before they enter stadiums.
Other provisions make it a criminal offence to shout chants or project banners with political content, nationalistic insults or racism. National symbols such as the Greek flag will be allowed into stadiums only if they haven’t been altered in any way.
There would be a three-year grace period for all stadiums to meet the law’s provisions.
However, it has been recommended that the capital’s GSP Stadium – home to Nicosia’s APOEL and Omonia – should start implementing the law with the start of the new football season.
“The new law provides a series of precautionary measures, but also repressive measures with a significant increase in fines and penalties,” Nicolaou has said, adding that it would target violent fans as well as team officials who create problems with provocative statements or actions.
The police seminar highlighted the responsibilities, obligations and rights of all involved on the issue, as well as identifying any potential loopholes in the new legislation.
A police statement said the seminar focused on, “proper policing and cooperation between the authorities at sporting events, and everybody involved participated in a very constructive discussion and exchange of views.”

While Sturm Graz qualified for the Intertoto Cup during the third round after winning 0-0, and then 2-1 late Friday in Budapest, rival supporters clashed throughout the day. Police detained an Austrian man after he damaged a police car. During the match, Austrian supporters threw smoke bombs in the stadium where the two clubs faced off. Sturm Graz chief Hans Rinner said he regretted the use of the devices by supporters of his club, but added Honved Budapest stewards had "clamped down brutally" on thousands of Austrians. Some stewards used batons and ripped out seats only to throw them at Austrian supporters, he added. About 10 Graz supporters were taken to hospital, he said. ************************************************************* Source : Reuters ************************************************************* Source : sturmtifo.com Video : http://videa.hu/videok/sport/balhe-a-bozsik-stadionban-botrany-szurkolok-budapest-honved-5OLU6ljZ9moKW8Ln ************************************************************* Nine injured as Hungarian, Austrian football fans clash in BudapestSource : MTI + Laola1.at Nine soccer fans were injured - two seriously - in a fight during a Honved-Sturm Graz UEFA Cup qualifier match played in Budapest, MTI learnt on Sunday. The fight started when fans of the Austrian team threw fire crackers into the field and security staff attempted to stop them. The fans ripped off seats and attacked the security guards, the Budapest police (BRFK) said. The security service accompanying the Austrian fans, however, claimed that the Hungarian guards had been equipped with knives and used billiard balls wrapped in socks to hit people. Their spokesman Robert Rieger said he had suffered bruises when he was hit by a plastic seat. "The situation was very dangerous and the chaos was indescribable. The Hungarian guards grossly violated regulations," he said. Rieger also voiced complaint about the Hungarian police using tear gas against his colleagues. BRFK's press officer told MTI that video recordings of the events proved that "it did not happen like that" and denied that tear gas was directed at Austrian security personnel. He added, however, that when gas is applied in dispersing crowds, it may affect all those present at the site, including policemen. Hungarian and Austrian supporters had first clashed in central Budapest's Vorosmarty Square before the match on Saturday afternoon. Three Austrians were arrested for rowdy behaviour and they were released on Sunday morning. ************************************************************* Source : basildon.hu ************************************************************* Source : Laola1.at Honvéd side

Source : Sporting Life
HERTHA BACK FANS AFTER TROUBLE
Hertha Berlin have defended their fans from allegations of hooliganism following a friendly match at the weekend.
Hertha defeated Magdeburg 4-2, but the result was overshadowed by clashes between rival sets of supporters after the game.
The finger had been pointed at Hertha, whose fans were accused of running riot in the city and on trams, but the Bundesliga club claims to have spoken with many of the fans who were at their game who gave a different version of events.
"Hertha BSC stand firmly behind their fans, who are not hooligans," read a statement on the club's website.
"Objective eye-witness reports of the events on the tram tell a different story (to what has been reported).
"According to them, it was the Hertha fans who were attacked by Magdeburg followers.
"(Hertha) have no intention of simply accepting the blame without commenting and will offer unreserved support to all fans who have questions or problems about this incident."
Around 35,000 Berlin fans turned up for peaceful celebrations on Sunday as the Bundesliga club staged an open day in the German capital.
