Two arrested in fan-zone violence as Italy crash in Euro final
Police in Rome have arrested two people after riots at a fan zone during the Euro 2012 final between Italy and Spain, Italian media reported Monday.
Officers patrolling the Circo Massimo late Sunday filmed and arrested a 23-year-old waving a Nazi flag and a 19-year-old who hurled objects at one of the four giant screens set up by the city.
It was reported that between 200,000 and 500,000 people packed the ancient Roman stadium. It appears that rows erupted toward the end of the game that Spain won 4-0.
Clashes took place also in Milan's Piazza Duomo, where police had to protect a group of Spanish fans targeted by drunken Italians.

'Gas chamber' for Russian fans - 04/07/2012
Source : http://www.rt.com
he Russian football supporters who were released from a Polish prison have revealed some details of their detention after clashes in Warsaw on June 12. The four Russian citizens talked to the journalists in their embassy in the Polish capital. According to them, the unrest ahead of Russia’s clash with Euro 2012 co-hosts Poland was provoked by the local hooligans, while the visiting fans were just defending themselves.
"We travel a lot around Europe and often go to other countries to watch football, but we never saw such conflicts as in Poland,” Artem Kurochkin, one of the released supporters, told ITAR-TASS news agency. “The Poles didn’t hide their aggression. During the march we were met with anti- Russian banners and slogans." The young man also said that the Polish police didn’t treat their Russian guests lightly. When Artem and several others were sitting handcuffed in a police vehicle handcuffed officers asked them whether they enjoyed their stay in Warsaw and fired tear gas inside the car, closing the door.
“It was a real gas chamber,” he stressed. As for the conditions in the detention center, the fans described them as the most primitive. They were held in double cells and learned the results of Euro 2012 games on the radio. Three more Russian fans remain in prison in Poland. They received two to three months prison terms for taking part in street clashes and attacking police officers. Over 200 people were arrested before and after Russia and Poland played a 1-1 draw on June 12, 25 of them were Russians with the rest being the locals.

Authorities say hundreds of Corinthians fans clashed with riot police in Sao Paulo following the team's victory in the Copa Libertadores final.
Police say they used rubber bullets and tear gas to contain the nearly 500 fans celebrating early Thursday at the Avenida Paulista, the city's financial center and popular celebration spot. Fans reportedly threw rocks and broken bottles at the officers.
Authorities said there were no major injuries, although one fan was reportedly hit by a rubber bullet and an officer sustained a minor leg wound.
Elsewhere, one man was hospitalized in stable condition after about 10 fans were run over by a driver who apparently was intoxicated.

Forest hooligans fined after clash with away supporters in city pub - 06/07/2012
Source : http://www.thisisnottingham.co.uk
FOOTBALL hooligans have appeared in court after a fight in a city centre pub before a football match in Nottingham.
Trouble broke out at the Bank pub, in Beastmarket Hill, Old Market Square, before Forest's home match against Barnsley at the start of last season.
The incident involved a violent violent clash between a group of Forest fans and a small number of Barnsley fans.
No one was hurt, but police searched CCTV and arrested 15 people in Notts, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, resulting in ten charges. Seven pleaded guilty to affray at hearings held in April and May, and were this week sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court.
Michael Lowe, 21, of Threlkeld Close, West Bridgford; Thomas Stefan Durbacz, 20, of Kimberley Road, Nuthall; Liam Douglas, 20, of Turnley Road, South Normanton; Michael Gregory, 18, of Sullivan Close, St Ann's; and Conor Crossland, 18, of Rectory Gate, Retford, all received 80-hour community orders and were told to pay £250 costs.
William Maddock, 26, of Ridgeway Walk, Top Valley, was handed a 120-hour community order and told to pay costs of £250.
Samuel Williams, 40, of Paxton Gardens, St Ann's, received a six-month jail term, suspended for 18 months, and an 18-month order banning him from attending Nottingham Forest home and away fixtures, and from being in certain areas of Nottingham on a match day.
He also has to do 120 hours of unpaid work and pay £250 costs.
At court hearings earlier this year, two 16-year-old boys, who can't be named for legal reasons, admitted affray.
One of them was given a three-year football banning order. The other was fined, but not banned.
An 18-year-old man, from Hucknall, was fined after admitting disorderly conduct.
Superintendent Mark Holland, of Notts Police, said: "We want everyone who chooses to go to football matches to feel safe and not have to put up with the ignorance and aggression of a few thugs."

Coritiba FBC - Palmeiras - Brazilian Cup final - 12/07/2012

Eight killed after Sao Paulo team wins Brazil Cup
Eight people were shot dead in various districts of a suburban Sao Paulo town early Thursday as fans celebrated the victory of local team Palmeiras in the Brazilian Cup final, police said. A total of nine people were shot, eight of whom died, in Osasco, the fifth most populous town in Sao Paulo's sprawling metropolitan area, they added. A statement from the military police said the assailants took advantage of the commotion caused by exploding fireworks to attack the victims. But it insisted that the killings were not linked to the Palmeiras victory celebrations as initially thought. "None of the victims wore Palmeiras jerseys" and the relatives did not make a link with the Palmeiras celebrations, the statement noted. The shootings occurred in districts known as drug markets. Official statistics put the average murder rate in Osasco, home to 680,000 people, at 11 per month.

Crystal Palace fan cleared in court battle - 14/07/2012
Source : http://www.thisiscroydontoday.co.uk
A CRYSTAL Palace fan has won his court battle against police, who claimed he should be banned from football grounds across the UK.
Police wanted Liam Melody, from Wallington, to be issued with a football banning order, after alleging he had engaged in "offensive" chants and been caught on CCTV arguing with stewards.
But magistrates found on Monday that there was not enough evidence for the order to be placed, and ruled the 19-year-old should walk free from court.
The second day of Mr Melody's trial – adjourned from May 8 – was heard at Tower Bridge Magistrates' Court.
Previously, the court heard claims from police that Mr Melody had been caught on CCTV arguing with stewards, charging at and jostling with police officers, and chanting provocative songs at opposing fans during some Palace games last season
But Mr Melody, of Stanley Gardens, claimed that although he was part of the Holmesdale fanatics group, he did nothing with "malice". He said: "I am a member of the group, we are a vocal fan group and I accept that we are ultras, but we support the team. Sometimes in some countries it is associated with violence.
"I have never covered my face with a scarf or a hood, and I never would. It is other people's choice if they do that. I can't tell them what to do."
The court was told of songs with swearing in them and, in particular, one about a police officer who had recently gone through a divorce.
Fans would sing "he sleeps in his car" insinuating he was homeless.
Mr Melody, who the court heard has no previous convictions, added: "I was singing along with it, it wasn't malicious. It was just banter, nothing was meant by it."
The teenager, who is due to go to Portsmouth University to study business in September, strongly denied claims made by officers about him swearing aggressively and charging at them.
His mother, Catherine Melody, took to the stand to speak of her son's "good character".
She said: "He is the eldest of my three sons and we have a very good relationship. I go to football as well, but my husband goes more than I do. I have never seen any trouble from Liam and I have been going for 13 years.
"These proceedings have caused a tremendous amount of stress. It feels like our life has been put on hold until it finishes."
Deciding not to apply the banning order, magistrates agreed Mr Melody should be able to reclaim legal costs incurred and said: "We have taken into account that the burden of proof falls to the police and taken into account the hearsay evidence.
"We cannot find Liam Melody's behaviour caused or contributed to violence or disorder to the extent required for an order."

Cardiff and Swansea football fans clash at Newbury Racecourse
RACEGOERS at Newbury on Saturday described their horror at having found themselves in close proximity to a bloody fight between Welsh football supporters that became a significant police incident and caused the track to close its bars and led to three arrests.
Two individuals were arrested for affray while another was arrested for a public order offence. Police reported only minor injuries had been sustained.
Newbury, whose licence to sell alcohol has already been called into question after the racecourse was found guilty of five underage sales in 12 months, will now again have to defend itself to both the police and West Berkshire Council.
Violence erupted in the grandstand enclosure in-between the fourth and fifth races. Witnesses reported seeing members of two coach parties engaged in a serious brawl that led to at least seven police cars being dispatched to the track, where officers holding riot shields remained on duty for some time.
“It was a disgrace and I won’t be coming again,” said racegoer Julie Davis. “It took so long to get it sorted out. Every time you thought it had stopped it started again. I reckon there were at least 30 people involved. It was scary.”
Another racegoer, Denise Mathias, said: “It just seemed to be a big fight between football supporters from Cardiff and Swansea. It was terrible. I saw a stocky man covered in blood having his head stamped on.”
A man who preferred to be named only as Alec added: “I’ve never seen anything like it on a racecourse. Both groups had obviously had too much to drink and they decided to have a punch-up.”
Stephen Higgins, Newbury’s joint-managing director, said: “There was a disappointing incident of anti-social behaviour which was dealt with by the racecourse security team and local police. So far as we know, there are no serious injuries.”
A Thames Valley police spokesman said: "We received a call at 4.03pm and worked with the security team at Newbury and the public bars were closed immediately. There were two arrests for affray and one for another public order offence.
"The incident seems to have been caused by the meeting of Swansea and Cardiff City football fans. There were some minor injuries as a result of the incident. There was one person taken to hospital by private ambulance but that was as a result of a heart attack and was not related to the incident."

Lithuania detains Latvia-bound Polish hooligans
Thirteen Poles have been arrested in Lithuania after trouble involving fans of Legia Warsaw bound for a Europa League match in Latvia, police said on Thursday. "Thirteen persons were detained in the resort town of Palanga after reports of drunk hooligans," Lithuanian police spokesman Ramunas Matonis told AFP. "We have received information from our Polish colleagues that around 1,500 Polish fans could come through Lithuania on their way to Latvia, with 200 to 300 so-called hooligans among them." Legia face Latvian club Liepajas Metalurgs on Thursday evening in the first leg of the second qualifying round of the Europa League. "Controls in the border territory have been strengthened, the police are checking cars and have already confiscated some banned items such as fireworks, knives and pepper spray," said Matonis, adding that the Lithuanians were in close contact with their Latvian colleagues. Lithuania has had to tackle travelling hooligans on several previous occasions. Past incidents have involved not only fans of clubs but also supporters of the Polish national team who last year clashed with security forces during an international friendly against Lithuania. Polish police estimate that their nation of 38.2 million has a hooligan hardcore of up to 5,000, mostly clustered around clubs rather than the national team. Frequently accused of doing too little to tackle the problem and keenly aware they were in the spotlight ahead of Euro 2012, the Polish authorities launched a major crackdown after their country's violence-marred 2011 cup final.

Germany brings out tough rules to tackle football hooligans - 17/07/2012
Source : Agence-France Presse
Police and sports authorities in Germany on Tuesday decided to ban troublemakers from football grounds for up to 10 years if they are found guilty of violence.
The decision follows a meeting of representatives of 54 professional clubs and the federal and regional interior ministries in Berlin after a series of football-related violence last season.
"A considerable reinforcement in the severity of stadium bans is expected and will increase from three years currently to five and even 10 years for the most serious cases," the participants said in a joint statement.
Several serious incidents occurred last season, notably at the end of a match in mid-May between second division Karlsruhe and third division Ratisbon, which left 75 people injured, including 18 police.
The head of the German football federation Wolfgang Niersbach said of the move: "It's an important step that clubs are sticking together.
"The measures taken are a necessary and urgent sign showing that everyone is fulfilling its responsibilities and committing to improving security."
The meeting also decided to keep standing terraces, banned in a number of countries, assessing that they "were an integral part of the culture of German football supporters".
Firecrackers will on the other hand remain banned and clubs will be able to take action against organised groups of supporters, such as revising reserved ticket allocations if the rules are not respected.
Football clubs will meanwhile increase by 50 percent the amount they pay for security in stadiums to alleviate pressure on the finances of local authorities.

Fans in Sarajevo beat Bulgarian troops - 23/07/2012
Source : FOCUS News Agency
The atmosphere ahead of the return match of Europa League second qualifying round between Sarajevo and Levski is getting more and more intensive after late last night fans of the Bosnian football club attacked a group of Bulgarians serving with EUFOR forces, announced Bulgarian bTV television station. The Interior Ministry of Bosnia and Herzegovina confirmed the incident, saying three people were injured in it. According to informal information, the Bulgarian troops were protecting a bus carrying Levski fans which had just arrived in Sarajevo. In the first match Levski won a 1-0 victory and the fans raised a banner with the names of the war criminals Ratko Mladic and Arkan in Sector B, which could be a reason for UEFA to fine the Bulgarian football club.

Bulgarian troops not involved in football fan fight in Sarajevo, MoD says
Bulgaria’s Ministry of Defence has rejected media reports from Bosnia that Bulgarian military personnel were involved in a brawl in Sarajevo between Bulgarian and Bosnian football fans.
The incident took place on July 22, the day of a UEFA Cup qualifying match in the Bosnian capital. Authorities in Sarajevo said that three people were injured in the fight.
Sofia-based local television station bTV, quoting “unofficial information” said on July 23 that Bulgarian military personnel, part of the EUFOR stability force, had defended fans of Levski football club who had just arrived inSarajevo.
A statement by the Ministry of Defence in Sofia rejected this, quoting Operation Althea deputy chief of staff Colonel Vladimir Lalov as saying that at the time of the incident, all Bulgarian military personnel were at their base, performing their duties.
If any military personnel were involved, they may have been from another contingent, Lalov said.
A further element of the controversy around the trip is an allegation that Bulgarian Levski fans raised a banner referring to Ratko Mladic and Arkan, which could open the way to a sanction from UEFA.
