Northern Irish fans in skirmishes in Latvian capital
Northern Ireland football fans have been involved in minor skirmishes with Latvian police ahead of tonight's European Championships qualifier. A spokesman for the Irish Football Association said there were seven incidents in a square in the country`s capital Riga, last night but no injuries and no arrests.
The team and around 2,000 supporters are in eastern Europe for a crucial fixture which could decide whether they proceed to next years championships. An IFA spokesman Geoff Wilson said: "There were a few minor incidents but no one was arrested."

Six fans arrested before Latvia's game with N.Ireland
Security will be stepped up for Saturday's Euro 2008 qualifier between Latvia and Northern Ireland after six fans were arrested for fighting in Riga on Friday night, police said. "Around midnight several fights broke out leading to the arrest of six people, one of them being Latvian," police spokesman Edgars Dudko told Reuters. Police added that several fans seemed to be suffering from hangovers on Saturday and had occupied a few bars around the Skonto stadium ahead of the scheduled 1930 (local time) kickoff. "We will intensify our efforts tonight and try to keep the worst drunks out of the stadium and hope things will be more safe," Dudko said.

| UEFA fine clubs over Champions League trouble - 07/09/2007
Source : Reuters
European football's governing body UEFA has fined five clubs over crowd trouble during the final qualifying round for the Champions League.
Belgium's Anderlecht were hardest hit as UEFA fined them 20,000 Swiss francs (8,302 pounds) after fans threw missiles and attempted to invade the pitch during their second-leg defeat against Turkish side Fenerbahce in Brussels on August 29.
Fenerbahce, who went through 3-0 over the two legs, were fined 8,000 Swiss francs for their supporters setting off fireworks.
"We accept the fine and are just happy that UEFA did not demand that we play our (September 20) UEFA Cup match against Vienna behind closed doors," Anderlecht said in a statement.
"We are very disappointed with the behaviour of these fans and have endeavoured with the police to identify them and have them punished. We are also working with the police to make sure this does not happen again in the future."
Italy's Lazio and Romania's Dinamo Bucharest were fined 12,000 and 9,000 Swiss francs respectively for incidents involving fireworks during their third-round meeting.
Lazio went through to the group stage as 4-2 aggregate winners.
UEFA's disciplinary committee made no mention of racist behaviour at either match despite media reports of chanting by Anderlecht, Fenerbahce and Lazio fans.
Red Star Belgrade were also fined 10,000 Swiss francs by the committee after their supporters threw missiles during their qualifier against Rangers, which ended in a 1-0 overall victory for the Glasgow side.

| Fine for riots during RSCA-Fenerbahçe - 08/09/2007Source : Anderlecht online Anderlecht has to pay a fine of 12,150 euro to the UEFA for riots during the game against Fenerbahçe. The Turkish club owes the UEFA 4,850 euro because the fans lit fireworks. So the rumours that Anderlecht had to play the home game against Rapid without fans, is not true. The club intents to file a complaint and recoup the money from the hooligans who started the fight. These hooligans are already identified by the police. According to the police, 111 hooligans participating in the riots during the game vs. Fenerbahçe have been identified. | |

| River Plate - Velez Sarsfield - 09/09/2007Source : XINHUA + InfoBae Police arrest 111 soccer hooligans in Argentina Argentine police on Sunday arrested 111 fans of Argentine soccer giant River Plate, including Adrian Rousseau, who lead The Tablon Drunkards, an infamous gang of soccer hooligans, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry said. The arrest took place ahead of a River-Velez Sarsfield match in Monumental Stadium, at a nearby train station. The gang, which has broken into two rival groupings lead by Rousseau and another fan Alan Schlenker, was about to begin fight in the station, the Ministry said. On Aug. 7, River fan Gonzalo Acro, who belongs to the Rousseau faction, was killed by three gunshots as he left a Buenos Aires stadium, as part of the two factions' battle. River's home stadium has twice been closed in recent days due to clashes between the rival groupings. Most of those arrested were charged with resistance to authority. Adrián Rousseau | |

| England: Poots moves to stop hooliganism - 11/09/2007
Source : UTV
Orders barring rogue fans from sports grounds should be introduced as soon as possible, the sports minister said today. Legislation should also penalise pitch invasions, missile throwing and bringing bottles and flares into stadiums, Edwin Poots said.
The minister added he had written to the NIO about changes similar to the 1991 Football Offences Act in 1991 and received an assurance of co-operation from Paul Goggins. "I have also asked for his co-operation in taking this forward as expeditiously as possible," he said.
The minister was responding to a debate calling for action against sectarianism and racism in sport.
He added drinking on public transport on the way to and from games needed to be tackled and said there should be no toleration of ticket touts.

| Four-year ban for hooligan - 12/09/2007
Source : expressandstar
A Wolves hooligan who hurled a missile in a “disgraceful riot” on Black Country derby day has been hit with a four-year banning order.
Showcase cinema worker Krishan Patel, aged 19, was part of a mob of up to 150 yobs who vented their fury at police when Albion visited Molineux in January.
Patel, who is also a student at the University of Central England in Birmingham, was caught on police camera during the trouble and pictured in the Express & Star afterwards.
Yesterday the teenager, of Catherine Road, Coseley, was given a suspended jail sentence by a judge who said the community would have been terrified by the football violence.
The FA Cup match ended with one of the worst outbreaks of football violence the city has seen in years. Eleven officers were injured as bricks, bollards and road signs were thrown.
Pate, who admitted throwing a missile, was said to be angry that Wolves had lost 3-0 and that home fans had been moved from their seats in the Jack Harris stand to make way for the visiting supporters.
As well as the banning order, he was given a nine-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, and ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid community work.
Kanwa Juss, prosecuting, told Wolverhampton Crown Court yesterday that the atmosphere became “quite hostile” when Wolves fans were separated from rival supporters at the end of the match.
The court was shown a video of Patel, who had drunk one-and-a-half pints of lager, in amongst scores of fans marching aggressively through the city centre. He admitted to violent disorder.
Judge Anthony Cleary said he had “pencilled in” a nine-month jail term for Patel when he had read details of the case against him.
He said: “Your behaviour was utterly disgraceful. This offence frightens and even terrifies the community and seeing that film shows effectively a riot taking place in an English town with young hooligans throwing missiles at the police who are trying their best to protect the community.
“You are a football hooligan and you deserve to go to prison.”
But he said that “by some stroke of mercy and good fortune” to Patel, other hooligans involved in the trouble had been given suspended sentences and Patel should not be treated differently.

| YOBS TARGETED IN FOOTBALL CLEAN-UP - 12/09/2007
Source : Derby Evening Telegraph
Police have warned that a new gang of young football hooligans could be issued with Asbos to prevent them causing trouble when Derby County play.
The group, calling itself the Derby Youth Connection, began to emerge towards the end of last season.
Football intelligence officers said the gang, largely made up of 15- to-17-year-olds, had been involved in scuffles as members tried to get at opposing fans.
Police are also investigating reports that some DYC members have been responsible for mugging their own fans and stealing mobile phones.
PC Allan Guy, of Operation Cabby, which was set up to deal with Derbyshire football yobs, said that as many as 60 young hooligans were turning out for some home fixtures and officers had been forced to prevent them getting at visiting supporters.
Now, police are planning to visit the homes of the young troublemakers to speak to their parents and warn them that if their children continue to cause problems, they will be brought before the courts.
PC Guy said: "They're behaviour is getting worse.
"Because of their age, half of them can't get in pubs so at home games they hang around near the station. They've also tried to cause disorder in the city centre.
"They've been surrounding people, threatening them and there are even indications they may have been involved in street robberies, where phones have been taken from both opposing and home fans.
"They have attempted to attack people and we've had to police them away from opposing supporters around the station.
"We want to stop it escalating. As well as home visits, we will be targeting some individuals for football banning orders.
"If it's looking like general anti-social behaviour rather than just football-related, we'll look at getting Asbos."
PC Guy said that the group had been formed largely from existing neighbourhood gangs from areas including Chaddesden, Hilton and Hatton.
However, he said that unlike traditional hooligan groups, which had tended only to fight with other organised football yobs, DYC members had been threatening law-abiding fans.
During the Rams' recent away match with Liverpool, he said, DYC members had been involved in scuffles and intimidated opposing supporters, as well as attacking a stall selling Liverpool kit.
The group also caused problems in Derby during the home Carling Cup game with Blackpool on August 28, when it was believed gang members were responsible for snatching phones off supporters.
About 48 Derby fans are already subject to orders banning them from attending professional matches.

| Wanderers fans warned to behave - 12/09/2007
Source : Bolton News
FOOTBALL fans heading to Macedonia for Bolton Wanderers' opening UEFA Cup match have been warned to be on their best behaviour.
Up to 1,500 fans are expected to make the trip to the capital of Skopje where the Whites will play FC Rabotnicki next Thursday.
Police chiefs from Bolton have visited the city and say they do not expect trouble among fans from the two sides.
advertisementBut the head of Bolton Police, Chief Supt Dave Lea, today warned that officers in the former Yugoslavian state would not tolerate drunken rowdiness which upsets the city's people.
"It has been made clear to us that their police officers will not stand any nonsense," said Chief Supt Lea.
"There will be anything up to 2,000 officers on duty for the match and they have told us that they are prepared for anything.
"I'm certain that if Wanderers fans conduct themselves as they have on previous trips abroad, they will be an absolute credit to the town and the club."
A team of officers, including plain clothes "spotters", will travel along with fans to identify hooligans intent on causing trouble and stop any fans banned from leaving the country at airports.
Chief Supt Lea said supporters could expect a warm welcome from the locals in the city, where food and drink is cheap and recent weather has been fine and warm.
But he warned that facilities at the 18,100 capacity Skopje City Stadium were basic and the stand where Wanderers fans will watch the game was exposed to the elements.
"The stadium is quite basic and, although the weather has been good recently, there have been some torrential downpours and fans need to be aware that if it rains, there is no cover on the stand where they will be accommodated," he said.

| Government agrees to tackle football hooligans - 12/09/2007
Source : Belfast Telegraph
The Government says it is prepared to work with Stormont on ways of tackling football hooligans - reversing their previous hostility to outlawing sectarian chants and pitch invasions.
The Northern Ireland Office says Security Minister Paul Goggins is ready to meet Culture Minister Edwin Poots to talk about "an agreed package" for making football matches safe.
The Stormont administration and football officials want that package to include a new law.
During a debate on a hooligans law at the Assembly yesterday, MLAs referred to former Northern Ireland footballer Neil Lennon and hurler Darren Graham, who were both subjected to sectarian abuse.
Mr Poots repeated that he is in favour of establishing a series of offences that could be used to keep unruly fans in line.
But because the NIO is still responsible for criminal justice matters, the Government would have to steer that law through Parliament.
Earlier this year, the NIO was sceptical about "cluttering the statute book" with a law "for which there is no demonstrable need".
But last night a spokeswoman said: "Our Minister Paul Goggins would be pleased to meet with Edwin Poots and work with him to develop an effective and agreed package in relation to safety and behaviour of sports spectators."
During an Alliance-sponsored debate on the matter yesterday, Mr Poots told MLAs that he wrote to Mr Goggins about the matter last month.
Anti-hooligan laws have been in place in England for 16 years, while in Scotland an additional law is in place to deal with sectarian chanting.
Mr Poots said he wants offences created around pitch invasions, offensive chanting, missile throwing and bringing bottles, flares or fireworks into grounds. He also called for restrictions on alcohol on public transport on the way to and from designated matches, a ban on ticket touts and the facility to prevent hooligans from travelling abroad for matches.
"I am convinced that measures to address these serious issues have a key part to play in making our sports grounds safer and more attractive to a larger and wider audience," he told the Assembly.

| Why Everton v Man United kick-off was switched - 13/09/2007
Source : Liverpool Echo
EVERTON’S home game with Manchester United this Saturday was moved to a midday kick-off because of police fears of violence.
Clashes between rival sets of fans have marred recent matches and police brought the game forward to avoid a repeat of past performances.
When the fixture list was originally produced in July, the game was set for a 3pm kick-off, but Merseyside police voiced concerns to both clubs and the switch was agreed. The game is not being shown on TV.
Last season’s match, which United won 4-2, passed without incident. But in 2005 an FA Cup game between the two sides brought one of the biggest clashes of hooligans ever seen in Merseyside.
The infamous “Battle of Everton Valley” followed a Saturday kick-off time of 5.30pm.
More than 500 police officers were deployed to keep the supporters apart before the February 9 tie, the first time boyhood Evertonian Wayne Rooney had returned to Goodison after his move down the East Lancs Road.
But a mass brawl erupted after the match in Everton Valley as away fans were ambushed when police tried to escort them along Kirkdale Road.
Officers arrested 33 people during the hour-long brawl.
Footage of the fighting later appeared on websites and was sold on DVD via mail-order.
Since then, police have been jumpy about games between the two clubs and pushed for Saturday’s kick-off to be as early as possible to cut the potential for drunken fans to spoil the game..
All away tickets for the match have come with a warning letter from Merseyside police.
The letter says:
Visiting supporters should be aware that there is a possibility that they may be held back inside the stadium after the game.
United supporters should not travel to this event without having a valid match ticket
United fans sitting in home areas of the stadium will be liable to ejection.
An Everton spokesman said: “Kick-off was set at noon on the advice of the police.”
Merseyside police declined to comment.

| Tight security for France versus Scotland encounter - 13/09/2007
Source : AFP Security was tightened for France's Euro 2008 qualifying match against Scotland in Paris yesterday when up to 10,000 Scottish fans were expected to arrive.
French police expect thousands of Scottish fans to march from the Eiffel Tower to the Parc des Princes before the gates open.
The Scottish Football Federation Web site said that 10,000 fans were expected to make the trip to Paris with 3,000 official tickets and the rest bought on the Internet.
French police said there will be additional security officers on the metro, surrounding area and inside the Parc des Princes stadium in the southwest of the capital.
Fans were to be filtered at the entry with suspect spectators undergoing special security searches and passing through metal detectors, police said.
Police were also stationed throughout the ground, which was under video surveillance, to react to any incident during the match.
They warned that any fans found inside the ground with prohibited items would be arrested.

| Hooligans warned to stay away from Turf - 14/09/2007
Source : This Is Lancashire
TROUBLEMAKERS have been warned to stay away from tomorrow's clash between Lancashire rivals Burnley and Blackpool.
Up to 4,000 Seasiders fans are expected to make the 50-mile trip from the coast for the game but officers are warning troublemakers to stay away.
The fixture is the first derby the Tangerines have been involved in since promotion to the Championship in May.
advertisementPolice in the resort have sent 25 letters to suspected thugs in an attempt to keep them from the game, although posts on internet message boards say they still intend to turn up at Turf Moor.
To try and keep trouble to a minimum the Blackpool fans will be kept inside Turf Moor for ten minutes after the final whistle to let the Clarets fans disperse.
Police spotters will also be amongst the fans in a bid to identify known troublemakers.
Match Commander Chief Insp Jeff Brown, of Burnley police, said: "The majority of fans come to watch football in a perfectly law-abiding way.
"It is an exciting time for both clubs because they are doing well and have some investment going in, but the reality is that a small number of individuals will look to exploit every opportunity they can to cause trouble and my view as match commander is that they will be dealt with firmly."
Insp David Old of Blackpool Police said: "There have been letters sent out and those who have received them have got them for a reason.
"They have been sent out as a deterrent to people who we have had problems with in the past for organising trouble or being involved in trouble."
In 1997, 13 fans were arrested before a game at Bloomfield Road, charged with attempting to get into the ground while drunk and possessing weapons.
Burnley fans were also ejected from the ground after throwing coins at home fans.
Currently 70 Burnley fans are banned from football grounds.
