Build up, kick off and highlights including numerous pitch invasions of Boros final home game of the 1986-87 season against Wigan at Ayresome Park. The 0-0 draw saw Boro clinch a famous promotion back to Division 2 at the first attempt following relegation and near closure in the Summer of 1986. Fantastic atmosphere, fantastic night.

Up to forty Blackburn Youth were involved in clashes with Sheffield United fans in Blackburn Boulevard, which is where the town’s bus and train stations are located; this has long been a flash point for football hooliganism. A group of about fifty Sheffield hooligans stood outside the Adelphi Hotel charged a group of about 40 Blackburn Youth who were approaching from Railway Road. There was a brief skirmish which resulted in a Blackburn arrest for a serious assault on a Sheffield United fan. Rovers lost the game 0 – 2.

There were ugly scenes of crowd trouble when the Blackburn End erupted in violence. Police arrested eight Blackburn people from Blackburn along with twenty four others. Organised elements of Blackburn Rovers, Chorley and Preston North End were involved in “three cornered clashes”; arrests came before, during and after the game. Most of the trouble came in Blackburn Town Centre, along Bolton Road as well as inside Ewood Park (Blackburn End) and outside the Ewood Park.

20th September 1986 was the date of the eagerly awaited Derby match between City and Leeds United. The once mighty Leeds United had slumped from the pinnacle of the game into the same division as their West Yorkshire rivals. So it was as equals the two clubs would meet.

Hundreds of fan escaped onto the speedway track from the burning van on the concourse above the dressing rooms. For the City supporters as smoke bellowed across the terraces it brought back painful memories of the Valley Parade disaster sixteen months earlier. With City leading two nil fighting once again broke out. Leeds fans hurling concrete, ripped-up seating and, bricks towards the pitch. United supporters invaded the playing area, some to for safety away from the mayhem while others made for the main stand to confront Bradford supporters. The match official had no alternative but to halt the game. The police emptied the Stadium before the match was resumed and played out in the surreal surroundings of a deserted Odsal under a cloud of smoke.

The violence reached its tragic climax on 01 March 1987 during FC Den Haag vs Ajax, a game that lasted only 45 minutes. It is still regarded as a miracle that no-one died during the brutal fan war inside the stadium between Mid-North and Ajax's F-Side.
