Greek police advise English fans - 20/07/2007

Source : AP

Greece's police chief urged English soccer fans not to travel to Athens for the Champions League final on May 23 unless they have a ticket.

About 20,000 officers will be deployed from greater Athens and other cities for the match in security measures similar to those used for the 2004 Olympics.

One English team is guaranteed to play the final. In the semifinals, Liverpool faces Chelsea and Manchester United plays AC Milan.

"We advise everyone who cannot get their hands on a ticket not to travel to our country," Lt. Gen. Anastassios Dimoshakis said Friday after a meeting for security chiefs and the mayor of Athens at the Greek Public Order Ministry.

"Security checks will start at airports, but also from the countries of origin of the fans," he added. "We are already co-operating with all European police forces."

Dimoshakis said police would try to keep rival supporters apart throughout their stay in Athens, and take steps to stop fans drinking excessive amounts of alcohol. He did not elaborate.

Security cameras at the Olympic Stadium will also be upgraded for the final. It is part of a campaign to tackle domestic hooliganism by introducing cameras and forcing fans to prove their identity when buying tickets.

All Greek professional team sports were suspended for two weeks after a fan was killed in March 29 clashes between supporters of soccer clubs Olympiakos and Panathinaikos.

Greek officers are working with British and Italian law enforcement agencies for the final. State-run NET television said a delegation of Greek officers would travel to Britain on Monday.

"The Greek police is exclusively responsible for providing security at the final, but we are also have active international co-operation," Public Order Minister Vyron Polydoras said.

"Our aim is ... to guarantee that sporting events (held in Greece) are peaceful."

Security will also be heightened for the Euroleague final four basketball tournament in Athens from May 4-6.

Croatia: Fans Strike Back - 20/04/2007

Source : Javno

Croatian fan groups have celebrated UEFA’s decision to give the EURO 2012 to Poland and the Ukraine.

The fans at the matches of the 27th round of the first Croatian football league (HNL), have gone public with their opinion against HNS (Croatian Football Federation) and Vlatko Markovic, and celebrated zero votes for the Croatia-Hungary candidature.

ARMADA

At a match against Osjiek, Armada wanted to hang out the message “With the money for the candidature, half of Slavonija could be freed from landmines”. The police received an order from the top, which decided that the message was inappropriate, as well as many others which through history wanted to display their messages. The message “Stop Violence” was displayed. The classic scandalous “HNS is gay, you screwed up football, Markovic you Turk, suck ….”

A member of the fan group Kohorta, tried to put a flag “Freedom to fans” on the fence, but that was not allowed, so there was not a single Osijek fan on the grandstands.

BAD BLUE BOYS

At the match between Dinamo and Cibalia, the home fans turned their banners around in a gesture of protest for their discontent with the police repression. Behind the message “Thanks UEFA” fans sung “zero votes, no Euro, Vlatko is a monkey, Croatian league…”

TORCIDA

The fan group Torcida at Poljud stadium thought of their own version of a song for the chief of HNS: Markovic, Markovic, po po po, Markovic, Markovic you wet your feathers. Police, police, ha ha ha, police, police, you will not arrest us.

KOHORTA

The group Kohorta decided to fight repression with a boycott, we bring you their full statement for the public:

Due to the police repression on Croatian fans for many years, which has reached a peak in the last few months, we have decided to boycott and stop all our activities as fans!

This radical step was forced upon us by the behavior of the police towards the fans, in which the means are not chosen.

In recent years, fans have become not second rate, but third rate citizens! In a country in which we live, where the only respected laws are bribery and corruption, in which criminal activities flourish in every field, which is being suffocated by unemployment and excessive debt of its citizens, we have decided to say ENOUGH! Enough covering up real problems! Enough smokescreens and deception! Enough making a huge deal out of small problems!

The fans refuse to be the number one problem in this country!

How long will our constitutional and human rights be broken, with the silent support of the public? We are not claiming to be saints, but let those without sin cast the first stone.

We have had enough of exaggerated and false statistics tied to fans and football matches. Why is there not a law on folk clubs where more incidents happen in one weekend than during a whole HNL football season? How can we allow a shooting in a police station and the trampling of two elderly people to pass unpunished and be neglected by the medias lasting a few days. However a thrown flare at a football match is written about days after the event? How can Croatian justice allow the words of one official to mean more than five witnesses, at a trial without physical evidence?

Now that the people from HNS have experienced a debacle at the announcement of the Euro 2012 in Cardiff, we are interested in who they will blame? Maybe the Croatian fans that they used to promote our candidature?

These are all questions whose answers are clear, but nobody cares!

We insist that a large part of the responsibility for the public image of fans rests on the medias who do not think about what effect their sensationalism will have on the lives of individuals.

A lot has been written about the scared fathers, mothers, uncles and aunties, and their children and family who avoid stadiums in fear of their lives… YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES!

Are Croatian stadiums empty because of hoards of bloodthirsty hooligans (fans), or because of the sorry and miserable Croatian football which is being controlled by shady figures, and the quality of clubs which this year can be compared with Malta, Faroe Islands and similar? Gentlemen, the fans are the only masochists who still have the stomach to go the Croatian stadiums, and the only ones who give some sort of color to that whole grey picture!

We are sick of this warped picture which has serious effects on the life of individuals and this is why we will say it again – BOYCOTT!

We are always for the sanctioning of those who do damage, but we are tired of the unprofessional Croatian police, who do whatever they want, and for the foundation of their behavior, they use an anti-constitutional law about preventing incidents at sporting events!

This is why we seek the review of the disputed law, and a professional approach to the keepers of order. In the mean time, we leave room for fathers and mothers with their children to, without fear of fans, attend the great football of the HNL.

We also call upon all other fan groups for solidarity, and to join the boycott, because only empty stadiums can force somebody to think!

STOP REPRESSION!

FREEDOM TO CROATIAN FANS!

Red Star Belgrade - Partizan Belgrade - Cup - 18/04/2007

Source : Reuters + Juznifront

Serbian champions Red Star Belgrade clash with traditional city foes Partizan on Wednesday in a potentially explosive cup semi-final after their last two derbies produced plenty of incidents on and off the pitch.

Holders Red Star beat Partizan 1-0 last Wednesday in a highly charged league encounter marred by 10 bookings, a sending off and frequent scuffles between players.

The previous game, which Partizan won 4-2, was overshadowed by serious crowd trouble before and after the kickoff, resulting in dozens of injured and arrested fans.

Police out in force for visiting fans - 21/04/2007

Champions League security

Every police officer in Attica and some from other parts of the country will be on duty in Athens for soccer’s Champions League final and basketball’s Euroleague Final Four next month, organizers said yesterday, as they warned fans from abroad not to travel to Greece without match tickets.

In security plans unveiled by Public Order Minister Vyron Polydoras and Police Chief Anastassios Dimoschakis, all of the 18,000 policemen who serve in Attica will take part in an operation designed to ensure there is no violence between supporters attending the Final Four on May 4 and 6 and the Champions League final on May 23.

The security levels for the two events will be similar to those seen in Athens during the Olympic Games of 2004.

Efforts will be coordinated from the control center at the Olympic Stadium complex (OAKA), where the basketball and soccer matches will be held. CCTV cameras will also be activated.

Greek police officers are due to travel next week to England and Italy to discuss policing tactics with their counterparts. Three of the teams in the Champions League semifinals – Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea – are from England and one is from Italy – AC Milan.

The Olympic Stadium will have a capacity of 63,800 for the final, which is the biggest game in European club soccer and is watched by more than 200 million people on TV.

Each finalist will receive around 17,000 tickets to sell to its fans but there is concern that some of the remaining tickets could be sold on the black market.

Liaison officers will be working with authorities from abroad to try to ensure that known hooligans are not allowed to travel to Greece. Police in Athens are particularly worried about the presence of an estimated 15,000 fans who will travel without match tickets.

“We call on fans who have no tickets not to travel to Greece,” said Dimoschakis. “Our checks will start at the airports and fans’ countries of origin. We will strictly control the use of alcohol… and our aim is for opposing fans not to meet.”

Norwich City - Ipswich Town - 21/04/2007

Source : Norwich Evening News

Police appeal for derby day calm

Supporters' groups have echoed the police in calling for calm ahead of Sunday's derby match.

Two days after the arrest of nine Ipswich Town hooligans who attacked Canaries fans at a Suffolk train station, pleas have been made for peace when the two rivals meet.

The match kicks off at noon and officers will be policing the ground and surrounding area before, during, and after.

Roy Blower, chairman of the Norwich City Independent Supporters' Association (NCISA), said: “We want to support the game passionately, but not to beat someone up for the sake of a football match. Let's have calm.

“I don't think there'll be trouble, because I believe the police have got it under control.”

Supt Jim Smerdon, of Norfolk police, has urged all fans to act in a responsible manner, and said: “We will deal positively with any problems but we know the majority of fans want to support their team and we are expecting a trouble-free environment as we saw in the last two local derby days in March 2004 and February last year. This is a family occasion for fans of all ages.”

Norwich police have been working in conjunction with the Ipswich Town Supporters' groups, Norwich City Football Club, British Transport Police (BTP) and Suffolk Constabulary to make sure the event is well co-ordinated and runs as smoothly as possible.

Thursday's police raids involved about 30 police officers who raided addresses in Ipswich, Stowmarket and Bedfordshire.

The operation came after 17 Blues' fans were involved in a battle against Norwich supporters at Ipswich railway station on March 31. Three people, including a member of railway staff, were injured.

Hooligan suspects held in raids

Police raided properties in Stowmarket, Ipswich and Bedford
British Transport Police have arrested nine suspected football hooligans in connection with a brawl on a train at Ipswich train station.

Three people, including a member of railway staff, were injured as fighting broke out between Norwich City and Ipswich Town supporters on 31 March.

All nine men are being held in custody on suspicion of conspiracy to cause violent disorder.

'Very frightening'

Violence first erupted on platform two, where up to 20 troublemakers from Ipswich Town had laid in wait for rival hooligans from Norwich City.

The fighting continued on the train on which Norwich fans were returning home from an away match against Colchester United.

Bob Mumm, from the British Transport Police, said: "This would have been very frightening for anyone on the train.

"We won't tolerate this kind of behaviour. Anyone behaving in this way, on the railway system or else where, else can expect to be dealt with the full weight of the law."

Nineteen arrested after derby day clash

Nineteen people were arrested before and after the Norwich versus Ipswich derby day clash - but police said they were pleased the majority of fans were well behaved.

Superintendent Jim Smerdon, of Norfolk police, said 11 of the arrests were for public order offences while one fan was arrested for trying to get into Carrow Road whilst drunk.

He said the arrests were pretty evenly divided between Norwich and Ipswich supporters and added the force also issued eight harassment orders.

Supt Smerdon said overall police were extremely pleased with the operation, with the majority of supporters enjoying themselves.

A further seven supporters were arrested by British Transport Police officers in Norwich.

Stoke City - Hull City - 21/04/2007

Source : BBC News

Violence follows football match

Officers and stewards were pelted with missiles including glass bottles and bricks outside Stoke City's ground.

Trouble began at the Britannia Stadium in Stoke-on-Trent at the end of a match between Stoke and Hull City when Hull scored a late equaliser.

Supporters in the Lower West Stand began trying to rip up seats and abusing stewards.

The violence continued outside the ground and police used batons and CS spray. Ten people were arrested.

A police spokesman said the majority of those arrested for violent disorder were Stoke City fans. They have now been released on police bail.

"We are appalled that a group of criminals decided to involve themselves in such behaviour.

"Ordinary, decent supporters must have been frightened by the actions of those involved."

Police would be looking at CCTV pictures of the trouble and said they expected to make more arrests.

They would also be seeking banning orders for the fans, the spokesman added.

"What an appalling way to approach the end of the season," he said.

No-one was seriously injured during the trouble.

At least 17,109 people attended the match with 1,800 of them away fans.

Scotland: Police raid homes of suspected hooligans - 20/04/2007

Source: Edinburgh Evening News

Season 06/07 - April - Page 4 En20casbll8

A 15-YEAR-OLD boy was among six suspected football hooligans arrested in a new wave of dawn raids following violent clashes before last month's Hibs-Rangers match at Easter Road.

The teenager from the Redhall area has been charged with breach of the peace and was set to appear in court today.

Seventeen officers from Lothian and Borders Police carried out a string of arrests after tracing the suspects captured on CCTV footage.

The team was aided by officers from the Central Scotland and Strathclyde forces who launched early morning operations in their own areas. A 31-year-old from Ayrshire and a 31-year-old man from Stirlingshire were also tracked down and detained.

Police chiefs from Edinburgh shared the security camera footage with their colleagues in the west to identify the suspects, who are both believed to be linked to Rangers.

The other men arrested in the Capital yesterday were an 18-year-old man from Pilton, a 19-year-old man from Lochend and a 31-year-old man from Portobello. The six were all due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court today.

Warrants have also been issued for two suspects who were on the police hit list, but could not be found at their home addresses.

The latest swoops brings the total number of alleged thugs arrested in the wake of the game on March 4 to 23.

Out of the ten men arrested in operations last Thursday, three were remanded in custody while three more were given special bail conditions banning them from SPL grounds.

CCTV footage captured scenes of fighting on the streets in the Meadowbank and Jock's Lodge area, which erupted just before kick-off.

A special squad was set up to review security camera footage and collect intelligence before making the arrests.

Today, a police spokesman said: "We hope that these raids will act as a reminder that there is no place for this type of behaviour. We work closely with football clubs and supporter's groups to ensure that games are safe and enjoyable places.

"Anyway that causes trouble can expect to face the consequences of their actions".

The ten suspected casuals who appeared in court on Friday were charged with a breach of the peace.

James Hunter, 30, Kevin Watt, 18, and Joseph McLellan, 18, were remanded in custody following their hearings and were expected to be fully committed today.

Stephen Watt, 17, Richard Grady, 19, and Gary Quilletti, 25, were released on bail with the special condition that they do not approach within 100 yards of any SPL football ground two hours before, or after, kick-off.

David Low, 41, Blair McKinnon, 26, Marc Johnstone, 29, and Steven Salmond, 24, were released on bail.

Around 70 people were involved in the fracas with witnesses describing the mob as "running absolutely riot". Seven arrests were made shortly afterwards in connection with the disturbance.

It is thought that the hooligans linked to Rangers were largely from Edinburgh rather than Glasgow.

Police believe the mass brawl which took place in front of shocked passers-by on a Sunday afternoon may have been pre-arranged between the rival groups using mobile phones or via websites. The subsequent arrests were carried out at homes in Leith, Restalrig, Pilton, Saughton and the city centre.

The crackdown follows the wave of arrests made in the weeks after October's Hearts-Hibs derby. Dozens of hooligans fought running battles in Lothian Road and Fountain Park following the match and 54 suspects have now been traced and charged.

Anyone with information about football-related disorder is asked to contact police on 0131-311 3131.

Athens calls on 20,000-strong police force for final - 21/04/2007

Source: The Guardian

Greece's entire 20,000-strong police force will be deployed to prevent violence at the Champions League final in Athens next month, with more than 30,000 fans from the UK expected to attend the match featuring either Liverpool or Chelsea, possibly against Manchester United.

Police squads from across the country will be bussed in to form a security cordon around the city centre ahead of the May 23 game. Officers, including riot police, will be stationed outside hotels, cafes and bars that British supporters are expected to frequent with officials intimating that alcohol consumption will also be curbed. To "free up" other personnel, trainee cadets are to be tasked with traffic policing and other mundane duties on the day.

Greek government and security officials, who are believed to have designed the measures in collaboration with British officers, will fly to the UK on Monday to hold further talks with counterparts from the Association of Chief Police Officers, which oversees policing abroad. Officials said Greek police would also be "working closely" with travel companies and charter flights bringing in fans.

The draconian steps - on a scale with those enacted during the 2004 Athens Olympics - were unveiled as Greece's chief of police, Lt Gen Anastassios Dimoschakis, urged English fans not to travel unless they had a "magic ticket".

Greek police said their worst nightmare was if Liverpool or Chelsea ended up facing Manchester United in the final. The first leg of United's semi-final against Milan is at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

"We advise anyone who cannot get their hands on a ticket not to travel to our country," Dimoschakis told reporters after meeting with other security chiefs and the mayor of Athens. "Security will not just start at the airport in Athens but in [the supporters'] home countries."

Greece's no-nonsense right-wing government announced last week that it would also upgrade and install more security cameras at the 70,000-seat Olympic stadium where the game will be played.

The final is seen as a prelude to the increased security measures the government plans to take to curb domestic hooliganism following the stabbing to death of a 25-year-old Greek football fan in Athens last month.

Four arrested as fans clash at St Marys

FOUR football fans were arrested after violence erupted between rival supporters at the end of Saints' crucial Coca Cola Championship victory over Leeds United.

Bottles and coins were thrown marring the end of the Championship crunch match.

The clashes were sparked by announcements over the public address system of results of other vital games up and down the country.

Saints fans began to taunt their northern rivals that they were destined for relegation to the third tier of English football for the first time in their history.

Supporters of both teams squared up to each other across lines of stewards and police and missiles were hurled through the air from both sides after the final whistle.

A pocket of up to 150 Leeds fans tried to fight their way through to get at the Saints supporters.

Police dogs were used to keep the two sets of fans apart.

Wolverhampton Wanderers - Birmingham City - 22/04/2007

Hooligans on rampage in city

Wolves hooligans again brought violence to the city centre after losing to Birmingham City at Molineux.

Three arrests were made and a number of officers were injured during trouble after yesterday’s 3-2 defeat.

Hundreds of police flooded the city centre in an attempt to avoid a repeat of the ugly scenes following matches with West Bromwich Albion and Cardiff.

But shortly after the final whistle, officers came under fire from missiles at the coach park. Witnesses reported seeing a 50-strong group of yobs in the Great Western Street area. Officers in full riot gear closed in on the group, penning them in while other fans dispersed.

The group was then escorted towards Wolverhampton train station but there were pockets of violence around the Ring Road at Stafford Street. One man, his hand covered in blood, sat on the pavement.

At one point several police vans raced to Queen Street, where a man was pinned to the ground by officers.

l Police were pelted with bottles and bricks when trouble flared after Stoke City’s home game with Hull on Saturday. Ten arrests were made.

United fans want Italian apology - 24/04/2007

Source : BBC News

Manchester United fans have demanded an apology from Italian police over the treatment they received in Rome at the Stadio Olimpico three weeks ago.

Trouble flared when fans were charged and beaten by riot police trying to control violence.

The demand comes as Greater Manchester Police prepare for United's Champion's League semi-final against AC Milan.

The Independent Manchester United Supporters Association (IMUSA) said those injured should be compensated.

They have threatened to take legal action against Italian police.

IMUSA spokesman Colin Hendrie said: "The authorities in Rome have already admitted too much force was used and confirmation Italian grounds will have stewards instead of police in charge just emphasises something went wrong.

"Our supporters were struck with batons and sticks for no good reason.

Those who were injured should be compensated financially and there should be a formal apology", he added, "we are prepared to take this matter to court in order to get them."

Violence also flared outside Old Trafford during the second leg of the tie against Roma, with 21 people arrested.

But Greater Manchester Police say they hope trouble will not detract from Tuesday's match against AC Milan.

Officers from Manchester have travelled to Italy to talk to authorities about the two ties and to finalise policing strategy.

Ch Supt Janette McCormick of Greater Manchester Police, said: "We have liaised closely with both clubs in the run up to this game.

"Both clubs are extremely responsible organisations, and I am confident that they know that we all carry a responsibility to ensure the game passes off peacefully."

The teams will meet for the second leg at AC Milan's San Siro stadium on 2 May.

UEFA fines Man United and AS Roma - 25/04/2007

Source : AFP

Manchester United and AS Roma were both fined by UEFA over the violence which erupted during their Champions League quarter-final in Rome this month.

European football's governing body acted after rival sets of supporters threw missiles at each other and clashed with Italian police, who were heavily criticised for their behaviour by United supporters following the incident at Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

Roma were fined 47 000 euros (about R445 000) with United having to pay 21 300 euros.

The clubs have the right to appeal the decision imposed by UEFA's control and disciplinary body.

Roma won that first leg 2-1 before a 7-1 drubbing in the second leg at Old Trafford.

At a separate hearing UEFA announced that European champions Greece must play their next two Euro 2008 qualifiers against Hungary and Moldova at least 250km away from the Greek capital Athens.

This punishment follows trouble at the Georgios Karaiskakis stadium during Greece's 4-1 defeat by Turkey which included fireworks and missiles being thrown, racist banners displayed and a general lack of organisation.

The Greek football federation has also been ordered to ban extremist supporter groups from matches of the Greek national teams and to pay a 61 000 euros fine.

And the Norwegian Football Association and the Football Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina picked up fines of 18 300 and 36 600 euros respectively after crowd trouble at their Euro qualifier in Oslo which Bosnia won 2-1.

Two-game home ban for Greece - 25/04/2007

Source : Teamtalk

Greece must play their next Euro 2008 qualifier away from Athens after UEFA handed them a two-match home ban following their clash with Turkey.

The Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) has also been fined CHF100,000 (£41,500) after incidents during the Group C clash at the Georgios Karaiskakis stadium on March 24.

Fireworks and missiles were thrown and racist banners displayed in the crowd during the match.

The EPO has also been ordered "to ban extremist supporter groups from matches of the Greek national teams".

On Wednesday, UEFA's Control & Disciplinary Body ruled that the the European champions must stage their qualifiers against Hungary and Moldova - due to be played on June 2 and 6 respectively, at least 250 kilometres from the Greek capital.

Meanwhile, the disciplinary body has also punished the Norwegian Football Association (NFF) and the Football Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina (NSBiH) for incidents at their game in Oslo on the same match-day.

The NFF has been fined CHF30,000 (£12,400) for insufficient searching of fans before the game at the Ulleval stadium, which Bosnia-Herzegovina won 2-1, while the NSBiH must pay CHF60,000 (£24,900) after their supporters threw missiles onto the pitch.

All three associations have three days to appeal the decisions.

GRONINGEN SECURE UEFA SPOT - 25/04/2007

Source : Sporting Life

FC Groningen made sure of a place in the UEFA Cup play-offs with victory over ADO Den Haag in their delayed Eredivisie clash, which was played in Emmen on Wednesday.

The match was originally scheduled to take place last Sunday, but was halted after 48 minutes due to ADO fans throwing fireworks onto the pitch.

The remaining 42 minutes were then played on Wednesday, with Ron Jans' Groningen holding a 3-0 lead.

The visitors had opened the scoring after 10 minutes of Sunday's aborted match when Erik Nevland headed home.

That led to the first firework being thrown onto the field, causing play to be suspended for 20 minutes.

Once it resumed, Groningen scored a second in the 25th minute through Goran Lovre before Nevland added a third just before half-time.

A second firework was thrown onto the field three minutes into the second half and as trouble broke out in the crowd, the officials led the players off the field.

The remainder of the match was then played behind closed doors and at the neutral ground of Jupiler League outfit Emmen, but it produced just one more goal with Laurent Delorge scoring a consolation for already-relegated ADO five minutes from time.

The result moves eighth-placed Groningen six points clear of FC Utrecht with just one round left of the regular season.
