Crowd violence spoils Olympiakos win over PAOK-26/02/2006

Source:Reuters

Crowd trouble marred Olympiakos Piraeus's 2-1 win over PAOK Salonica in Thessaloniki on Sunday.
A section of seating was set on fire by PAOK fans shortly after Michalis Konstantinou scored the winner for Olympiakos in the 77th minute.
Missiles were thrown at the firemen attempting to put out the blaze with missiles from the stands. The referee halted the game for several minutes while PAOK captain Thodoros Zagorakis pleaded on the touchline with fans, television coverage of the match showed.
When the fire was put out, the referee resumed the game briefly before blowing the whistle for time.
PAOK, playing their first game under coach Ilie Dumitrescu, had taken the lead in the fifth minute through Egyptian Mahmoud Fadlalla Shikabala but Olympiakos levelled when Yiannis Okkas scored from close range.

Diyarbakirspor - Konyaspor - 25/02/2006

Source : AFP

Five arrested over football violence in Turkey

Police in this southeastern Turkish city arrested five people over violence during a first division game at the weekend which left some 30 people injured.

The five men were picked up after police identified them as among the troublemakers from video footage of the fighting in Sunday's game between bottom-of-the-table home team Diyarbakirspor and Konyaspor, currently placed ninth.

They were accused of damaging public property and resisting security forces.

More people could be arrested over the incidents, the sources said.

Television footage showed spectators dismantling plastic seats and throwing them onto the pitch before a group of fans broke through the fence and ran onto the field, aiming at the referee and the visiting team, which was leading 1-0.

The referee was forced to suspend the game in the 87th minute.

The unrest continued outside the stadium as fans hurled stones at the police, who retaliated with tear gas and fired warning shots in the air.

About 30 people, most of them policemen, were hurt, including some who were hospitalized, but no one was in serious condition, police sources said.

Stadium violence is not rare in football-mad Turkey, and bloody incidents between rival fans, notably during derby matches, are frequent.

Earlier this month, FIFA slapped heavy penalties on Turkey for violence that marred their November World Cup qualifier against Switzerland.

Turkey were ordered to play their next six official home games behind closed doors at a neutral venue and pay a fine of 200,000 Swiss francs. Three Turkish players were suspended.

FC Nantes - Paris SG - 25/02/2006

Source: EUROSPORT

Paris St Germain chairman Pierre Blayau said on Monday the French club had been "taken hostage" by rival groups of soccer hooligans who ransacked a motorway service station on their way back from a match at the weekend.

"I want to state my indignation and my dismay after acts of such gravity, which are not the acts of true supporters but of common law criminals," he told Reuters in a telephone interview.

"The problem is that these people claim to belong to official groups of supporters who can't control them any more.

"We are in very serious situation which has nothing to do with the club. PSG have been taken hostage."

Fighting between the "Tigris Mystics" and the "Boulogne Independents" broke out during the first division match in Nantes where PSG were held to a 0-0 draw on Saturday evening.

Police separated the two rival groups who clashed again at a service station on the motorway near Ancenis in western France. After fighting, they ransacked a shop.

Police said five people were injured and 22 arrested. Most were released although at least four could be charged.

PSG entertain arch-rivals Olympique Marseille this weekend in a league game which is usually treated as a high-risk match.

"We'll have to find the means to fight hooliganism. We'll have to take measures," Blayau said.

Fighting between PSG hooligans before a home game against Nantes in October led to the arrest of 85 people at the Parc des Princes. Interior minister Nicolas Sarkozy said at the time he wanted violent fans to be banned from stadiums.

"I want these (supporters') associations to be banned and broken up. Someone whose picture is taken while doing the Hitler salute is not a fan, he is a lout. He should not be let into a stadium," he said.

"Our policy is very simple. We want to get rid of the louts in our stadiums. Families should be able to come back to soccer stadiums."

Police to show Cup riot pictures - 27/02/2006

Source : BBC NEWS

Detectives investigating violence at an FA Cup tie say they will soon be publishing pictures of people wanted for questioning.

Seven people were arrested and one man charged with a public order offence following the match between Stoke City and Birmingham City on 19 February.

The disorder between the rival fans started after Birmingham City's 1-0 victory at Stoke's Britannia Stadium.

Officers say they are closing in on a number of people they wish to speak to.

CCTV footage

Members of the Football Intelligence Unit have spent the last week studying hours of CCTV footage and stills.

They have made a list of more than 30 people whom they wish to identify in connection with incidents outside the stadium.

Officers also wish to speak to another six people seen inside the stadium in connection with racist chanting.

Det Sgt Steve Parker said: "The images are being reviewed by officers from both Staffordshire and the West Midlands and a number of people have already been named by officers and will face arrest.

"Within the next few days we will be able to publish a number of photographs of other people we need to speak to about the violence and disorder."

Spanish anti-racist group calls for player protest - 27/02/2006

Source : REÃœTERS

A leading Spanish anti-racist organisation has called on professional footballers to delay the start of next weekend's league matches as part of a plea for tougher action against racism in Spanish football.

The request came after Barcelona's Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o threatened to leave the pitch during Saturday's league match at Real Zaragoza after being subjected to racist abuse by a section of the home fans.

"We have asked the Spanish Association of Professional Footballers (AFE) to delay the kickoffs of next weekend's league matches by five minutes as a gesture of solidarity for their colleague Eto'o and as a way of demanding more effective action to eliminate racism from Spanish Football," the Spanish Coalition Against Racism (CECRA) said in a statement.

CECRA, an umbrella group that was asked to speak at UEFA's recent anti-racist conference in Barcelona, added that football authorities and the Spanish government had to take tougher action if they were to deal with the problem.

"It is no longer enough to parade banners and show films ahead of matches in our stadiums. These abuses constitute a serious risk to professionals who are being humiliated on the pitch.

"This serious problem, which is not just confined to radical fans, is now beyond the control of the clubs."

Spanish sports minister Jaime Lissavetzky said that he backed Eto'o's stance and said the government backed sterner measures against racism at football stadiums.

"We have to end these shameful acts," he was quoted as saying in the Spanish media on Monday. "We have to be as clear and tough as possible. I understand completely why Eto'o did what he did in the game against Zaragoza."

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has punished clubs with fines of around 600 euros ($710.08) when their fans have been reported by referees to have been involved racist abuse.

The government-run Anti-Violence Commission has recommended fines of up to 6,000 euros for individuals who have been identified as being involved in such incidents.

The president of the Spanish Football Federation Angel Maria Villar closed a UEFA anti-racist conference in Barcelona earlier this month by saying that the problem should not be given too much attention.

"We shouldn't make a mountain out of a molehill," he said in his closing speech. "Things that take place on the pitch should be left there.

"It is only a very small minority that are racist and we shouldn't emphasise the negative, instead we should be stressing the positive aspects of football."

Nigeria's Udeze wants to quit PAOK after knife attack - 27/02/2006

Source : REÃœTERS

Nigerian defender Ifeanyi Udeze wants to leave PAOK Salonika after being attacked at knifepoint in his car on Sunday night.

A club spokesman said the 25-year-old was attacked by four fans after PAOK's defeat by Olympiakos Piraeus in Thessaloniki.

"We had a bad match against Olympiakos with some trouble with the supporters," said the spokesman.

"Ifeanyi was attacked and threatened with a knife. His car was damaged but he was not hurt.

"But he has said he no longer wishes to play for the club."

Sunday's match was interrupted towards the end when a section of seating was set on fire by PAOK fans.

Five men arrested during the game appeared before the prosecutor on Monday.

They were charged with throwing blocks of cement, tiles and other objects, including mobile phones and a portable cooler, at police and firemen who were trying to put out the fire.

They will appear in court again on Wednesday.

Zaragoza fined for racism-28/02/2006

Source:Reuters

Real Zaragoza announced they must pay a 9,000-euro fine for racism aimed at Barcelona's Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o during a Spanish first division match at the weekend.
The club added they will appeal the decision made by the Spanish league.
Eto'o, Spain's top scorer with 18 goals, wanted to leave the pitch a quarter of an hour before the end of Barcelona's 2-0 away victory in protest at monkey cries from Zaragoza fans.
The Cameroon international was persuaded to stay in the game till full-time by the referee and team-mates.

Stoke City - Birmingham City - FA Cup - 19/02/2006

Source : BBC NEWS

Football hooligans attack police

Hundreds of football fans attacked police officers as violence broke out after Sunday's FA Cup tie between Stoke City and Birmingham City.

Trouble began at the Britannia Stadium when a group of about 200 visiting fans ripped down fencing separating them from Stoke supporters.

As rival gangs left the ground, police faced what a senior officer described as "extreme violence".

Several arrests were made and officers are studying CCTV images.

'Rival hooligans'

Mounted officers and dog handlers were among those attacked by fans of both clubs outside the stadium, and police had to close the nearby A50 as they dispersed the crowd.

The match commander, Supt Andy Franks, said: "Our officers prevented serious disorder between the rival groups of hooligans and a number of arrests have been made in and around the stadium.

"Those officers were faced by extreme violent behaviour from a significant number of criminals.

"Those arrested will be questioned by detectives this evening and further arrests are likely."

Visiting fans banned from Ajax-The Hague matches - 16/02/2006

Source: Turkish Daily News

Visiting supporters will be banned from matches between Ajax Amsterdam and ADO The Hague for at least five years, the mayor of The Hague said Wednesday. The decision follows an incident Friday in which Ajax hooligans attacked ADO supporters at their clubhouse in the Hague ahead of a game on Sunday. Both clubs and the national soccer association have agreed to the ban, Mayor Wim Deetman said in a statement. "It was unavoidable that we do this," Deetman said. "Something terrible happened on Friday." At least eight ADO supporters were injured in the incident, in which the attackers used baseball bats and knives. Two ADO supporters were stabbed and one was beaten so badly he was hospitalized for several days.

England: Football violence reported - 09/02/2006

Source: Borehamwood & Elstree Times

Violence reportedly erupted between Boreham Wood and Crawley Town football supporters in West Sussex at the weekend after an FA Trophy third round match.

Travelling fans were said to have clashed with home supporters at a pub in the town centre but police made no arrests.

A Crawley newspaper quoted one football club turnstile worker as saying the abuse he experienced from Boreham Wood FC fans was the worst he had experienced in eight years' working at football matches.
continued...

Boreham Wood FC chairman Danny Hunter said he was unable to comment on the reports as he had not seen or heard of any trouble.

He added that the club had received no complaints from the coach company involved in transporting the Boreham Wood FC fans to and from Saturday's match.

Bolton-Wigan - Whites game made all-ticket - 02/02/2006

Source: This is Lancashire

BOLTON Wanderers' derby match against Wigan Athletic on Saturday has been made all-ticket after the police received reports that football hooligans could try to cause trouble.

Wanderers will close the ticket office at noon on Friday following police advice to prevent rival fans infiltrating opposition sitting areas.

The two local teams have not met in Bolton for 13 years and it is the first time the Whites have played host to Wigan at the Reebok Stadium.

The last time they faced each other in Bolton was at Burnden Park in 1992.

Normally, fans can pay on entry at the ground on match days, but this Saturday only fans who have already purchased their tickets will be allowed through the turnstiles.

Supporters who turn up at the Reebok Stadium without tickets have been warned they will be turned away.

Chief Supt Dave Lea, who is match commander on Saturday, said extra police patrols would be deployed to make sure there was no trouble before, during or after the game.

"It is a local derby with a great deal riding upon it," he said.

"Sadly, a small minority have indicated that they may seek to exploit this match to cause trouble, and we have consequently put into place a robust policing operation which compliments the club's well-practised stewarding of the event.

"I have advised the club on safety grounds that this match should be an all-ticket event.

"I recognise that this could inconvenience some, but must emphasise that this decision was made to allow those genuine supporters to enjoy the event without risk of disorder.

"This is intelligence-led, and, in conjunction with colleagues in British Transport Police and Lancashire Constabulary, we will present a robust response to anyone who is intent on causing disorder."

Chief Supt Lea added: "Saturday is about a well-matched game of football between two competitive neighbours.

"It is my intention that that it precisely what Saturday will be remembered for."

A spokesman for Wanderers said: "Due to police instructions, there will be no sales available whatsoever on the day of the game - however, pre-booked collections will be permitted."

Seven men arrested at Midland FA Cup tie - 21/02/2006

Source: The Birmingham Post

Seven men were arrested when officers came under sustained attack from rival gangs of football hooligans at the FA Cup tie between Stoke City and Birmingham City, police said yesterday.

The disorder started following Birmingham's 1-0 victory at Stoke's Britannia Stadium on Sunday afternoon, as opposing fans attempted to confront each other.

Violence broke out at the south-east corner of the ground when 200 visiting fans ripped down a length of fencing separating them from home supporters.

Police officers, mounted and dog support officers, were attacked by both sets of fans and officers were forced to close the nearby A50 trunk road as they dispersed those involved.

Staffordshire Police said four men from north Staffordshire had been arrested for public order offences - a 19-year-old from Burslem, a 29-year-old from Stoke, a 22-year-old from Meir and a 24-year-old from Leek.

A force spokesman said the man from Leek had been charged with a public order offence and the other three suspects had been released on police bail.

Two other men from Burslem - aged 16 and 56 - were arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer and bailed until next month.

B'gham vs Stoke: Football fans in car park clash - 20/02/2006

Source: Birmingham Mail

A NUMBER of suspected hooligans were arrested when violence broke out following Blues' FA Cup match with Stoke.

Hundreds of rival fans tried to attack each other in the south east corner of the Britannia Stadium after Birmingham's 1-0 victory yesterday.

Police said a group of around 200 Birmingham fans eventually broke down a length of fencing on the South Stand car park in order to confront Stoke fans exiting the stadium.

Police officers, including mounted and dog support officers, then came under attack from both sets of fans.

Officers were forced to disperse groups from the stadium and the A50 was closed to prevent collisions between pedestrians and vehicles.

Linfield FC - Derry City - Setanta Cup - 20/02/2006

Football fans attacked by stone throwers

Buses carrying Derry City football players and fans back to the city after a Setanta Cup clash against Linfield in Belfast have come under attack from stone throwers in the early hours of this morning.

The buses were on the outskirts of Londonderry just after midnight when they came under fire. Windows on the two private coaches and the hired Ulsterbus were broken, however no one was injured in the attacks.

The buses had just returned from Windsor Park following a 1-1 draw between Derry City and Linfield.

The match in Belfast had passed off without incident.

Last year, the Linfield team bus was attacked by stone throwers following a match at the Brandwell grounds.

This was the first competitive match between the two teams in over 34 years.

Football hooligans jailed 12 years for stabbing Millwall fan - 16/02/2006

Source : http://www.thisislocallondon.co.uk

TWO drunk football supporters who tried to murder a Millwall fan for asking which team they supported have been jailed for 12 years.

David Connolly, aged 38, and Ricky Blackham, aged 40, argued with John Patrick Quinn in a pub when he suggested they were Chelsea fans.

The pair stabbed the 31-year-old several times in the stomach, chest, left arm and hand.

The incident happened on the pavement outside O'Neils Bar in High Street, Beckenham, on December 11, 2004.

An ambulance took the victim to Lewisham Hospital where he was treated.

Mr Quinn has since undergone numerous major surgical operations and is still recovering from the attack.

Unemployed Connolly, of Turpington Close, Bromley, admitted knifing Mr Quinn once.

However, Blackham claimed he tried to stop the fight.

The pair, who denied attempted murder and wounding with intent, were found guilty by unanimous verdict in December last year.

They returned for sentencing at the Old Bailey on February 8.

Blackham, also unemployed, of Churchfields Road, Beckenham, had been stopped by police as he drunkenly drove away from the stabbing and was later sentenced to four months in jail for drink-driving.

Judge Paul Focke QC accepted both men had at first tried to defuse the row in the pub and they had both written letters expressing their remorse.
