| Hooligans run riot again in soccer's grudge rematch - 01/05/2005Source: Smh.com Rival Sydney soccer fans clashed again yesterday, sparking violence and street riots which police struggled to contain. The violence occurred after Serbian-supported Bonnyrigg White Eagles had beaten Croatian-backed Sydney United in a NSW Premier League match at Parramatta Stadium. The last time the two clubs met, on March 13 at Sydney's Edensor Park, six people were arrested and two police officers were injured after 50 rival fans threw flares and other missiles at each other. The ugly scenes prompted a full-scale inquiry which led to the match yesterday being played at a neutral venue and with a big police presence. The violence at the state league match came a week before next Saturday's launch of Football Federation Australia's A-League, an eight-team national competition authorities hope will breathe new life into the game. Police said they made four arrests yesterday, during and after the match. Before the final whistle a fan was arrested for assaulting a rival fan and another held for malicious damage. A police spokeswoman said two men were charged with throwing objects at the Sydney United fans' bus. Advertisement AdvertisementAfter the game, about 500 Bonnyrigg fans were allowed out of the ground - and straight over to Sydney United supporters, who had been segregated on the opposite side of the ground. The Bonnyrigg fans were to have been kept behind for a full 15 minutes after the game so their rivals could disperse without trouble. Parramatta Local Area Commander Geoff Beresford confirmed that a delay with the Sydney United supporters' coach arriving and leaving the stadium had created the problems. "To be quite honest, nobody wanted that bus out of there more than we did," Superintendent Beresford said last night. "But it was out of our control and at the same time holding the Bonnyrigg fans inside the ground was becoming problematic; had we held them any longer they might have damaged the stadium." The ugly scenes started with a distress flare being thrown from inside the Sydney United supporters' bus. But then those inside the vehicle were all forced to duck for cover as missiles rained down on the coach, smashing several windows. Police officers were forced to crash tackle several fans trying to get closer to the coach. At one point a firecracker was thrown into a group of six mounted police who struggled desperately to maintain control as more hooligans rushed past. Police seized weapons, including a timber post studded with nails. A-League organisers have brought in consultants to ensure the sport's relaunch is not marred by hooliganism. The first Bonnyrigg-Sydney clash was followed by a riot in Melbourne between fans of Macedonian origin who follow Preston and supporters of Greek-backed South Melbourne. Football Federation Australia head of operations Matt Carroll said: "We are taking security advice but we don't think it's going to be a major issue." _________________ | |

| Australia: Soccer clubs fined over riot - 06/05/2005Source: The Age Victorian Premier League clubs South Melbourne and Preston have been hit with two of the largest fines ever levied by local soccer chiefs and will lose gate money and championship points following a riot at South's Bob Jane Stadium last month. A Football Federation Victoria Tribunal has found both clubs guilty of bringing the game into disrepute after the incident, in which fans invaded the pitch, threw flares and plastic water bottles and had to be separated by police on horseback after Preston snatched a 1-0 with a late winner. The tribunal ruled that all games between the two clubs over the next two years will be played behind closed doors, with the general public excluded. The only people who will be allowed to attend, says the federation, will be club members - supporters who are not expected to cause trouble at games of this sort. South was fined $20,000 while Preston was fined $17,000. Both clubs were deducted three championship points. In addition, Preston will forfeit a $5,000 behaviour bond levied on it following similar disturbances when it played South nearly three years ago. Advertisement AdvertisementFootball Federation of Victoria Chief Executive Officer Tony Pignata said the penalties were the most severe in recent history and sent a clear message to all supporters and clubs that such behaviour will not be tolerated. "It is time to send a message to the delinquent minority who are damaging the image of our sport and today's penalties go some way to achieving this, Pignata said. "The FFV is disturbed that the actions of a small minority has darkened what has been an extraordinary year for football in this State,'' he said. "The Vodafone Premier League this year has been one of the most successful in history. Crowd numbers are up by more than 300 per cent. "Today's penalties send a clear message that we will not tolerate this behaviour and supporters who continue to act in this matter will hurt the future viability of their clubs. We are committed to restoring the image of our game and it is a shame that one isolated incident can tarnish what has been an otherwise successful season so far.'' _________________ | |

| Suspected hooligans detained - 13/05/2005
Source: The Sunday Sun Four football fans detained as they were about to fly to Switzerland for England's friendly with Argentina have appeared in court.
The men were stopped at Stansted Airport, Essex, on Friday, and appeared before magistrates in Chelmsford.
The hearing was adjourned until December 20, when the case will be heard by magistrates in nearby Harlow.
Police said the men - who were not remanded in custody - were known to them and officers had reason to believe they might commit offences if allowed to travel.
Officers want magistrates to make the men the subject of banning orders under the Football Spectators Act and to prevent them from attending games.
Police named the men as Lee Nodder, Steven Campbell and Craig Cupitt, all in their 20s and from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, and Jason Sorsby, 33, from Bristol. | |
