30 FANS HELD IN FINAL RIOT

THIRTY football fans were arrested yesterday after a riot broke out half an hour before the Scottish Cup Final kicked off.

Strathclyde Police lifted the brawling supporters for 'mobbing and rioting' in Glasgow's Bedford Street, near the Carling Academy in the city's south side, at around 2.30pm.

A further 16 fans were arrested in and around Hampden Police swooped on groups of rival Celtic and Dundee United fans after they launched a pitched battle before the game.

It is believed the disturbance in the Gorbals area of the city may have been a pre-planned fight between rival sets of thugs.

Normally fans at high profile games like the cup final are kept well apart from each other. It is thought those involved in yesterday's violence managed to escape the attention of the police who were escorting them to the game.

The violence and disorder was the worst seen in the city between any set of fans for several years and took police by surprise.

There is little history of antagonism between Celtic and Dundee United fans. Last night police said officers moved quickly to quell the trouble in Bedford Street.

A spokeswoman said no more details were available about whether anybody was injured or whether any weapons were involved.

No one is thought to have been seriously hurt Most of the arrests at the ground - where Celtic lifted the trophy after a 1-0 victory over United - were for breach of the peace or drink-related offences.

But at least one person was held after being heard spouting sectarian abuse.

The number arrested yesterday was twice the number normally held by police in Glasgow after an Old Firm game.

Last night the rival fans were being held in police cells around the city, including Govan police station - which has special cells designed for holding terrorist suspects.

A spokesman at Govan said they were holding a large number of Dundee United fans, some of whom had been drinking heavily before the game.

All 46 will remain in custody until tomorrow when they will appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court to face the various charges.

Chief Superintendent John Malcolm, who was in overall charge of policing the cup final, said last night: 'Despite an early disturbance a good-tempered crowd attended the game'.

Seventy Odense supporters provoked troubles in the city center when they went out of their coach, throwing bottles.

Villa thugs are jailed - 03/05/2005

FIVE football hooligans were yesterday handed prison terms for a pre-planned street brawl.

They were among 13 Aston Villa fans who admitted being involved.

Scotland Yard said some were armed with bottles and glasses during the violence in Pentonville Road, North London, in March last year.

Eleven of the men, all from the West Midlands, were sentenced at Snaresbrook crown court in East London.

Gary Clarke, 33, and Steven Fowler, 36, both of Minworth, were each jailed for 12 months. Liam McCarron, 43, of Birmingham, Carl Meah, 22, of Castle Bromwich, and Jamie Wellings, 22, of Kitt's Green - who are already serving jail terms - were given three months.
