| Halifax Town - Hereford United - 03/04/2004Source: http://www.halifaxcourier.co.uk Violent flare-up halts Town's big match HALIFAX Town's game against Hereford at the Shay on Saturday was halted for two minutes in the second half when skirmishes broke out between rival supporters. The fans clashed where the North stand meets the Skircoat Road stand and the referee waited for stewards to deal with the incident before allowing the game to continue. At one point, a Hereford supporter behind the goal picked up a section of the rugby league goalposts that were lying in front of the perimeter fence. Hereford boss Graham Turner walked from his position in the dugout in front of the unfinished main stand to the North stand to calm down his side's followers. Both clubs will be waiting anxiously to see if the incident is mentioned in the referee's report to the Football Association. The incident was caught on closed circuit TV and the likelihood is that those involved will be banned from games at the Shay. Inspector Russell Clark, of Calderdale Police, confirmed there was some confrontation inside the ground which had been managed by the stewards. He said there was concern there could be trouble after the match and officers had been sent to try to prevent any problems. He said several groups of fans had been monitored but there had been no trouble outside the ground and no arrests. Town lost the game 2-1 to extend their club record run of league defeats to 10. | |

ROVERS FANS ATTACKED
COACHES carrying Doncaster Rovers fans were attacked with stones and bricks after the club's match on Saturday.
Rovers supporters found themselves hemmed in between opposing fans and a line of coaches after their team's 2-1 away win at Mansfield Town.
Secretary of the Retford branch of the Doncaster Rovers Supporters Club, Paul Mayfield, explained: "They let both sets of supporters out together and all the buses were nose to tail. Nobody could get through.
"As people were getting on the buses, the Mansfield fans were throwing bricks at the windows."
Supt Stuart Wright of Nottinghamshire Police said: "Following the match, there was an outbreak of violent disorder which was subsequently subdued by the force on Quarry Lane, Mansfield, and in Mansfield Woodhouse.
"In total, 14 people were arrested for football related violence, some of whom are now on police bail, and an investigation into the incident on the day is continuing."

| Villa fan attacked pub rival - 16/04/2004
Source: The Birmingham Post An Aston Villa fan who launched an unprovoked attack on a Birmingham City supporter after they watched an England game in a pub has been jailed.
Dean Jones hurled abuse at his victim, who was wearing a Blues football shirt, before punching him in the face, Warwick Crown Court heard.
Jones, 21, of Braceby Avenue, Billesley, was jailed for a total of six months after admitting assault and failing to turn up for an earlier hearing.
Paul Farrer, prosecuting, Andrew Roberts has gone to the Camp pub in Kings Norton with his girlfriend and a friend to watch the crunch Euro 2004 England v Turkey qualifier. As they were leaving they passed and Mr Roberts, who was wearing a Birmingham City football shirt, was subjected to a barrage of abuse.
Jones, despite one of his friends trying to block his way, approached Mr Roberts and squared up to him.
Egged on by some of his group, Jones punched Mr Roberts in the face and then stood back.
The attackers then returned to the pub, and Mr Roberts was taken to hospital with a broken jaw, a black eye, two of his lower teeth missing and a split lip.
When he was later arrested Jones, who had a previous conviction for battery, claimed Mr Roberts had struck him first to the leg, and that he had acted in self-defence.
Jones entered his guilty plea at an earlier hearing on the basis that his punch was to Mr Roberts' mouth and had not caused the fractured jaw.
Ian Ball, defending, said Jones, a self-employed installer of suspended ceilings, was "ashamed and at a loss to know why he did what he did," and has expressed remorse.
Jailing Jones, Judge Hodson told him: "This was not the first time that, in anger, you have used violence.
"He had done nothing to you. The catalyst was solely that he was wearing a Birmingham City football shirt."

| Hooligan leader was known throughout world of football - 01/04/2004
Source: The Birmingham Post Among the Aston Villa fans jailed for fighting before the 2002 derby game with Birmingham City at St Andrew's was one well-known hooligan.
Steven Fowler was refused entry to both Japan and Belgium when the countries held football tournaments in 2002 and 2000.
He was also thrown out of France during the 1998 World Cup as part of a new get-tough policy that targeted known hooligans who might not have caused any specific trouble at tournaments.
He was arrested in Toulouse shortly after being recognised by a hooligan "spotter". At the time, the National Criminal Intelligence Service said he was a hard-core category C
hooligan leader. Fowler was also known to Belgium, German and Dutch authorities before the Holland/Belgium European Championships in 2002 after his name was included on a 1,000-name list of offenders sent out by NCIS.
He was turned away from passport control at Ostend after taking a ferry from Dover.
The same NCIS crackdown, which involves British police sharing intelligence with their foreign counterparts, led to Fowler being refused entry into Japan in 2002.
However, it emerged later that he had not been made the subject of a football banning order, which would have prevented him from leaving the UK.

| Jailed after street fight - 01/04/2004
Source: Evening Mail Eleven Villa thugs caught on camera in pitched battles with Blues fans before the first Birmingham Premiership derby were today behind bars.
The fans were also banned from attending any football matches for between six and ten years.
The 11, along with three others who escaped prison sentences, were recorded by police during the pitched battle in Rocky Lane, Aston, before the Villa Blues derby on September 16, 2002.
The Villa fans were leaving O'Reilly's pub when they were confronted with a mob of Birmingham City fans chanting "Zulu".
The two sets of supporters charged into each other, throwing bottles, spraying CS gas and swinging any items they could fashion into weapons.
Earlier this week, seven Blues fans were jailed for their part in the mass brawl.
John Howard, aged 34, who had a previous conviction for football-related violence, was found with a CS gas canister and a knife during the riot.
When his home, in Hillaries Road, Erdington, was searched three other gas canisters were found. Judge McCreath sentenced him to nine months in prison.
Mark Campbell, aged 22, of Tidmarsh Close, Balsall Common, who threw a bottle at the oncoming Blues mob, was given six months.
Andrew Ryder, aged 34, of Shawberry Avenue, in Castle Vale, was convicted earlier in the year for his part in the heroin and cocaine drug ring on the Castle Vale estate.
He was not going to the match, but was found with a CS gas canister on him when he was arrested. Judge McCreath sentenced him to six months.
Steven Fowler, aged 34, of Cottage Lane, Minworth, was sentenced to six months and banned from matches for ten years, because of two previous football hooligan-related convictions. Sean Fitzgerald, aged 35, from Chilvers Grove, Chelmsley Wood, was given five months for his charge of affray.
Anthony Andrews, aged 29, of Fox Hollies Road, Acock's Green, who was seen wielding a drainpipe in the video, was sentenced to three months in prison.
Garry Tucker, aged 36, from Roach Close, Chelmsley Wood, who had a previous conviction for violence near Villa Park, was sentenced to three months.
Steffan Leach, aged 30, of Cherwell Drive, Chelmsley Wood, was sentenced to two months in prison along with Peter Naven, aged 36, of Jerrys Lane, Erdington, who was seen throwing a block of wood in the video.
Barry Peck, aged 26, Broomfield Road, Earlsdon, Coventry, was also given two months along with Robert Wood, aged 38, of Chester Road, Erdington, who was seen brandishing a bottle in the video.
Paul Salter, aged 41, of Bonner Grove, Aldridge, was given an 180-hour Community Punishment Order and banned from matches for three years.
Mark Baker, aged 33, of Ashburton Road, King's Heath, and Gregg Marett, aged 30, of St Blaise Avenue, Water Orton, were both sentenced to an 150-hour Community Punishment Order and also banned from matches for three years.
