| Wrexham - Swansea City - 14/09/2002Source: The Wrexham Leader Police in riot gear were drafted in when violent clashes broke out between rival football fans in Wrexham town centre on Saturday. Two people were arrested during the clashes before Saturday’s Welsh derby between Wrexham and South Wales rivals Swansea at the Racecourse, and the police have not ruled out the possibility of more arrests. The police helicopter was also called into action as fans fought in Wrexham town centre and in The Turf pub at the Racecourse. It is understood a trail of damage was left at Yates and at other town centre bars and pubs. Missiles, including bottles, were thrown at the police, and one policeman was injured. The police say the trouble was quickly dealt with and that there was no trouble during or after the game. But Chief Insp Bob Wilson, ground commander for the day, said he was disappointed with the amount of resources the police had for the match. He said: “This is a sad reflection in that we had to put this amount of resources into a football match.” A spokesman for Swansea Football Club said today: “This type of behaviour is absolutely unacceptable. If names of troublemakers are given to us they will be banned by the club for life.” At the start of the season 60 Swansea supporters were serving bans. _________________ | |

| Two years for stockbroker in Millwall riot - 14/09/2002
Source: The Guardian
A stockbroker was jailed for two years yesterday for his part in a riot at a football match between Millwall and Birmingham City last season. Ian Stone, 24, of Rotherhithe, south-east London, was caught on video camera throwing a missile at police after the Division One play-off match on May 2, London's Woolwich crown court heard. Stone was also spotted by a police officer brandishing a large plank of wood as his face "contorted with rage". Stone, who pleaded guilty to violent disorder at an earlier court hearing, was one of 900 hooligans who pelted police with missiles outside Millwall's New Den ground in Bermondsey, south-east London. More than 100 police officers were injured, many seriously, in the violence. Appearing for sentencing alongside Stone were Paul Healy, 20, a ventilation engineer of Bromley in Kent, and John Manzaroli, 25, a warehouseman of Fulham in west London. Healy was given a two-year sentence at a young offenders institution, while Manzaroli was jailed for two years for his part in the violence. Both had admitted single charges of violent disorder at a court hearing in July. All three were given orders banning them from football matches for eight years. Sentencing them, Judge Michael Carroll said: "All three of you were part of the violent disorder which took place on a frightening scale following Millwall's defeat by Birmingham City. "It was a complete over-reaction on your part to that defeat, and cannot be excused in footballing terms or any other. Yet again it has unfairly tarnished the name of Millwall football club." Turning to Stone, the judge said: "You have the further from grace to fall in relation to your career and privileges that you have worked hard for." But he added: "You were heavily involved in this, you were carrying this wood around, you handed a traffic cone to another person who clearly intended throwing it at police, and you yourself threw a small missile as well." _________________

| Birmingham City - Aston Villa - 16/09/2002Source: ITK forum Here is Villa view: Villa holed up in O`reillys at Aston Cross. Pub borders on Nechells which is the “no mans land” between Villa and Blues territories. Villa start gathering at 2pm. Reports start to come in early of a stabbing of a Villa lad at the Square peg in the city centre. Numbers swell throughout the afternoon to about 300 and still there are no obvious OB . Phones are going as Blues say theyre coming to us. Spotters are out but nothing to be seen. More Villa joining from other pubs in Aston and word is in of another firm of about 70 Villa who are set up in Moseley. By 6pm Villas numbers in Aston Cross are 350-400. Word is received that Zulu`s are shacked up in Shanahans bar just ¼ mile away in Nechells. Spotters check the area and there is no obvious sign of a firm but their spotters are seen on phones on street corners around the area. A blue people carrier full of `known` Zulus is doing the rounds along with a couple of cars of lads parked up in the flats on the estate. 6.45pm and some of the Villa lads start to make there way along the road to Shanahans. The road is straight but a hump back bridge blocks a clear view from one end to the other. Most of Villas firm hang back as it still hasn’t been established that Blues are even there. The plan is, to get through the back streets as near to Sty Andrews as possible without an escort so most decide not to draw attention. The noise from the Bridge suddenly rises as Zulus are spotted coming around the corner from behind Shanahans. Villas firm start to move at pace along the road towards them and are now strung out along the whole length of the road. Bottles and bricks start to fly in both directions as 30-40 Zulus stand there ground as the Villa front runners fly into them. A full on toe to toe is in full swing now and passing cars are caught up in the mayhem. From somewhere….fuck knows where…..Zulus start throwing engine parts at us. Starter motors, alternaters, bits of gearbox etc. Full on battle as both sets of lads don’t give an inch. More and more Villa pour over the bridge and Zulus have to back off just as riot vans start to tear in from everywhere. Both sets of lads still going for it as the boys in blue pile out and start cracking heads with batons. A few lads now lying unconcious (from the toe to toe) and the arrests start as the Zulus try to do one. Both firms back off and Villa are forced back towards O`reillys. OB now everywhere. A number of Villas main boys have inevitably been targeted by the OB and are frogmarched into riot vans. After both firms have moved away, the road looks like the scene of a major road accident with glass and bits of car everywhere. O`reillys is surrounded by the masses of riot police. The road is blocked off from both ends and everyone is kept there until the escort starts towards the ground. Villas mob now numbers around 300 with nearly as many OB to accompany them. No chance of any further shennanigans. The Zulu`s that showed were there main old lads. Proper Zulus. Fair play to em. Shame there youth firm don’t take a leaf out of there book and EARN some respect. As for our firm….a fuckin good turnout. Some real menaces amongst the ranks. Shame the initial indecision stopped us from landing on the Zulus enmasse and giving the fuckers a real slap. Respect to EVERYONE who showed. _________________ | |

| FC Basel - Spartak Moscow - 17/09/2002
Source: Reuters
UEFA are set to investigate crowd trouble during FC Basel's 2-0 win over Spartak Moscow on Tuesday in their opening Champions League match, European soccer's governing body has said. Referee Claus Bo-Larsen had to use an umbrella to protect himself from missiles thrown from the St Jakob Park crowd at halftime and the group B game was temporarily suspended when smoke from two flares covered the pitch and stopped play. 'The report from match officials will be considered when the UEFA control and disciplinary board next sits and they will decide what action to take,' UEFA said. A similar incident occurred at FC Basel's stadium in this year's European under-21 championship when missiles were thrown at halftime during Switzerland's semi-final against France. 'If this kind of incident is repeated there is a possibility of a further fine or a ban from the use of the stadium,' UEFA added. _________________

| Deportivo Quito - Olmedo - 19/09/2002
Source: Reuters
Ecuadorean championship leaders Deportivo Quito have been given a two-match home ban because of missile-throwing by their supporters, the Ecuadorean Football Federation (FEF) said Thursday. The FEF said on its website that a variety of objects were hurled at visiting Olmedo players when they went to take corners during Sunday's match, which Deportivo won 1-0. Deportivo will have to play matches against Emelec and Deportivo Cuenca outside the province of Pichincha, which includes the city of Quito and the surrounding region, the FEF said. Recently Ecuador has experienced several incidents of soccer violence, which was almost unknown in the small Andean country before this year. The most serious incidents took place before an Emelec-Barcelona derby in the port of Guayaquil, where rival fans fought in the streets around the Capwell stadium, damaging cars and property. _________________

| Cardiff hooligans jailed - 19/09/2002
Source: local newspaper
Eight Cardiff City football hooligans have been jailed for taking part in violent scenes which erupted after a crucial play-off defeat. Stones, bricks, wood, bottles, street furniture and a car windscreen were thrown outside Ninian Park after the Bluebirds' 2-0 defeat to Stoke in on May 1. With the home side's hope of promotion shattered by an extra-time goal, a group of at least 600 fans tried to reach visiting supporters and later attacked police officers and horses. Ten defendants, who had all earlier pleaded guilty to violent disorder, were banned from attending football matches on Friday. Eight were jailed while the remaining two were handed community punishment orders. Cardiff City were looking for promotion to Division One and had won the first play-off leg 2-1 at Stoke. With the second-leg aggregate score level after 90 minutes, the sides played extra time, when Stoke won the tie with a 115th-minute free kick to beat Cardiff 3-2.It sent the visiting fans into ecstasy while the expectant Bluebirds support was distraught. Police attacked Cardiff Crown Court heard 600 to 1,000 Cardiff fans tried to reach the section of Stoke supporters. Prosecuting, Christopher Williams explained how the men - one of whom was already banned from attending games - were part of the resulting melee around Sloper Road and Leckwith Road. "Countless missiles were thrown. It must have been terrifying for anyone who saw it. The police officers were certainly very frightened. "Many of the horses were punched and kicked and dozens of officers were injured. "One was knocked out when a brick was thrown at him and smashed his helmet." The officer missed work for a week and still suffers continual headaches, he claimed. Hooligans 'unacceptable' Judge Christopher Llewellyn-Jones viewed video tapes of the events, including a police van being violently rocked. He said custodial sentences were necessary to show hooliganism was unacceptable. "People must know that if they are going to leave a football ground and indulge in this sort of behaviour they are going to go to prison... "...in the hope that it might bring home the message that the public will not tolerate this kind of behaviour. "Members of the public as well as police officers were frightened, if not terrified, by your behaviour. "Regrettably, actions of your sort bring the footballing public and supporters into disrepute." _________________

| Tight security for vital derby - 20/09/2002
Source: The Evening Chronicle
Police leave has been cancelled for tomorrow's derby day soccer clash. Tough security measures will be in place around St James's Park to stamp out any trouble at the match between Newcastle United and Sunderland. A fleet of coaches will take fans from Sunderland's Stadium of Light to and from the ground. And police today warned that anyone arrested will automatically lose their season ticket. Although police chiefs do not want to say how many officers will be on duty they did admit that numbers would be much higher than for a normal game. Chief Insp Dave Jackson, operations manager at Newcastle Central area command, said: "As always, it will be policed firmly and fairly and any trouble makers will be dealt with promptly. "Fans who commit offences can lose their season tickets and will be put before the courts where they could face imprisonment and could be banned from football grounds in England and Wales and abroad for 10 years." In April last year, 160 supporters were arrested when trouble flared between hooligans attached to United's so-called Gremlins and Sunderland's notorious Seaburn Casuals at the Stadium of Light. Newcastle's derby match against Sunderland in February at the Stadium of Light went ahead with just 25 arrests and fans were thanked fans for their behaviour. Police are not expecting the new Sunderland Metro extension to cause any problems at Saturday's game. Chief Insp Jackson said: "A vast majority of Sunderland supporters will be travelling to the ground in coaches provided by the club. "We will be advising fans to take advantage of these coaches which will be under police escort both to and from the ground." _________________
