Incidents erupted before the match between Peñarol and Cerro, with the Albiceleste breaching protocol and injuries reported
The pre-match press conference for the match between Peñarol and Cerro was marred by incidents in the vicinity of the Estadio Campeón del Siglo on Saturday, with supporters of both teams involved in incidents that required police intervention.
The incident took place after 6.30pm in the vicinity of the Carbonero stadium, and the protagonists were visiting fans who failed to comply with the security operation for the match, which the same club published on Friday afternoon.
According to information provided by the Ministry of the Interior to Ovación, the police controlled the incidents in the area surrounding the Campeón del Siglo: "According to the agreement between the police in charge of the operation and Club Atlético Cerro, the Cerro supporters were to arrive at a designated point and from there be taken to the stadium.
"None of the supporters arrived at this point and decided to leave on their own," explained the police.
This led to a violent situation: "When a group of supporters arrived near Route 102 and Route 8, there were incidents with Peñarol supporters, and two groups of the Republican Guard had to intervene. A member of the Republican Guard was slightly injured when stones were thrown.

Football supporter charged after throwing pyro device onto pitch - 12/03/2024
Source : https://www.northwales.police.uk/
A 29-year-old man has been charged after a lit pyrotechnic device was thrown onto the pitch at a recent Wrexham AFC away fixture.
The incident occurred during a League Two match between MK Dons and Wrexham on Tuesday, 20 February.
Adam Edwards of New Hall Road, Wrexham was arrested during the match following a CCTV review of the incident.
He was subsequently charged with two offences under the Sporting Events Act 1985 and will appear in court later this month.
North Wales Police’s Dedicated Football Officer, Dave Evans said: “There does seem to be a misconception among some fans that using these items is not very dangerous and that’s simply not true.
“Pyrotechnics are inherently dangerous and present a risk of serious injury to those who discharge them and those around them, including in this instance the players who were on the pitch.
“At any level of football, the use of such devices is illegal, irresponsible, and dangerous.
“Those who commit such offences will have Football Banning Orders sought against them which could restrict access to all football matches.”

Large police presence in Sussex ahead of Europa League match
Off the pitch, the police are working hard to ensure that no trouble ensues.
Brighton and Hove Albion have requested ‘immediate action’ from the authorities after items were thrown at their supporters by Roma fans at the Stadio Olimpico last week. The round-of-16 match was marred after two Brighton fans were stabbed in the centre of Rome last Wednesday night.
Ahead of the second leg, a police spokesperson said: “There will be an increased police presence in Brighton ahead of Brighton and Hove Albion’s football fixture against AS Roma.
"Sussex Police is working in partnership with Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club for the club’s historic first season playing European football.
“We also work alongside AS Roma, UEFA, and other emergency services and partner agencies to assesses the appropriate policing response to support the club.
“This includes ensuring there is sufficient support in place for fans visiting the city for the first time, and to make sure that everyone attending the match has a safe and enjoyable experience.

Roma fans reportedly arrested ahead of Brighton game
La Gazzetta dello Sport write that five or six fans made their presence felt in negative fashion during the flight and police were there to meet them as they left the plane.
The majority of the circa 1,500 Roma fans attending the match are flying in today for the late evening kick-off.
Also present at the Amex Stadium will be the two Brighton and Hove Albion supporters who were stabbed during the trip to Rome.
This unfortunately is not an uncommon situation in Rome, especially when the visiting supporters are English and therefore assumed to be ‘hooligans’ up for a fight with the local hard-line ultras.

Greek police on high alert after reports of Dinamo Zagreb fans heading to Thessaloniki for PAOK clash
Police in Greece were put on alert after they received information that a group of about 100 supporters of Croatia’s Dinamo Zagreb were traveling to Thessaloniki for the UEFA Europa Conference League match against PAOK. UEFA has already sanctioned the Croatian club with a ban on fans at all away games in European club tournaments, following clashes between fans of Dinamo Zagreb and AEK in Athens last August, that saw Greek fan Michalis Katsouri killed.
Despite the ban, a group of Dynamo fans have still persisted in travelling to Thessaloniki via Alexandroupolis in Northern Greece. Local police have been ordered not to allow any Dinamo Zagreb fans into Thessaloniki in order to avoid any incidents with PAOK supporters.
The first match between Dinamo and PAOK in the Croatian capital Zagreb a week ago took place without away fans.

Two Cardiff supporters get 5-year football ban after Swans fan attack - 14/03/2024
Source : https://swanseabaynews.com/
Two men have received a Football Banning Orders and suspended prison sentences following an assault at the Cardiff City Stadium during last season’s South Wales derby.
The victim was a Swansea City fan who was sat with a group of friends in the home end among Cardiff City fans on April 1, 2023.
When Swansea City scored the winning goal deep in injury time, the victim instinctively jumped up to celebrate which led to him being assaulted.
Steven Jones, 33, from Mountain Ash, and Cory Jones, 28, from Abercynon, pleaded guilty to assault and affray and were this week (Tuesday, March 12) sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court.
The brothers were identified from CCTV and mobile phone footage which showed them throwing punches and kicking.
Stadium stewards and other supporters intervened to prevent the assault and protect the victim who was pushed down approximately 10 steps into a row of seats before being escorted out of the stadium.
The 23-year-old from Neath was taken by ambulance to the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, where he was treated for cuts and bruises to his head, back and torso.
Footage showed Jones and Jones laughing in the concourse following the incident.
In addition to the five-year football banning order, Steven Jones was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment suspended for two years and Cory Jones was sentenced to 15 months’ imprisonment suspended for two years.
Cory Jones was made subject to a 120-day abstinence from alcohol order and must complete 180 hours of unpaid work.
Steven Jones was also made subject to 120-day abstinence from alcohol order and must complete 120 hours of unpaid work.
They must each pay the victim £500 compensation.
Police are still trying to identify two other suspects in connection with this assault seen here in CCTV images.
