Fears of violence in Marseille ahead of Frankfurt CL match

French authorities in Marseille have ordered a partial ban on alcohol sales and banned Frankfurt fans from traveling on their own ahead of Tuesday’s high-risk Champions League match at the Stade Velodrome.

Less than a week after violent crowd fights marred a match between Nice and Cologne in the Europa Conference League, the likely mass arrival of thousands of Frankfurt supporters in the south of France is raising fresh concerns.

Frankfurt supporters have been allocated 3,300 seats for the game but the German club believes that as many as 5,000 additional supporters without tickets, among them hardcore ultras, could make the trip to Marseille.

Frankfurt’s passionate fans often travel in great numbers and they were involved in clashes last season during the club’s victorious Europa League campaign.

To limit the risks of violence, the regional police administration for the Bouches-du-Rhone in southern France said the sale of alcoholic beverages will be banned in several districts of the seaport city Tuesday from 2 p.m. until the game’s kickoff at 9 p.m.

Pointing out the risk that Marseille fans could try to attack Frankfurt supporters roaming in small groups, the police prefecture ordered that only the Frankfurt fans traveling in official buses placed under police escort will be allowed to access the Velodrome and its surroundings.

Seven of these men are Marseille supporters were arrested on the night of Monday  in Marseille for “prohibited carrying of a weapon”, “contempt against the police” and “violence against the police”, indicated to franceinfo the prefect of police of Bouches-du-Rhône, Frédérique Camilleri. These arrests took place on the eve of the Champions League football match between Olympique de Marseille and Frankfurt, qualified as a match at “risk” by the prefect.

The eighth is a German fan.

Fan shot dead in clashes before Argentine football match

A 36-year-old man was shot dead in Argentina during clashes between rival supporters of the same club before a second-division match, police said.

Witnesses said the clash was among supporters of Club Atletico de San Martin in the northwestern city of San Miguel de Tucuman on Monday night.

The fans were heading to the stadium for the top of the table clash against Belgrano, police sources said, quoted by the official Telam news agency.

San Martin president Ruben Moisello said the victim was shot in the neck from behind. Police cordoned off the area after the incident but the match went ahead with San Martin winning 1-0.
A murder investigation has been opened and Tucuman's deputy police chief Juan Ibanez said the "perpetrator has already been identified."

Riot police quell fan disorder at Marseille-Frankfurt match

Riot police intervened when opposing fans launched flares and fireworks at each other before kickoff of Marseille’s home game against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Other sections of the home crowd egged on their Marseille counterparts, with some cheering as flares and firecrackers landed in Frankfurt’s away section.

Prior to the match, a large-scale police operation successfully contained the risk of fan violence in the city itself. After a stadium brawl in Nice last week left dozens injured, authorities were on high alert for this match, classified as high risk.

Tensions were elevated by late Tuesday afternoon when dozens of police marched a group of Frankfurt hardcore fans — called “ultras” — numbering around 500 up a long road, where those with tickets were taken to the game in coaches under police escort. Those without tickets stayed on site at a fan zone with police nearby.

Earlier, Frankfurt ultras congregated in one of the city’s main squares with police blocking every entry point and preventing any ultras from leaving it until hundreds of riot police escorted them away at around 4:30 p.m. There was one brief skirmish with locals on the way.

The crowd violence at the Champions League game between Marseille and Eintracht Frankfurt resulted in injuries to 11 police officers and two German fans, one of whom sustained a serious neck injury after being hit by a flare, national police said Wednesday.

Riot police intervened twice — shortly before Tuesday’s game and then late on — when opposing fans launched flares and fireworks at each other from close range for several minutes inside Stade Velodrome.

National police said 11 of the officers were lightly injured. Seventeen people were detained.

Reports of fan being stabbed overshadow AC Milan's win over Dinamo Zagreb

News agency AGI says a 39-year-old man was knifed in the buttocks as two fans were attacked near the San Siro stadium.

Police in Milan said on Wednesday evening that 36 Dinamo fans had been intercepted, with 23 charged “for a variety of offences” and 20 handed stadium bans.

Italian media reported that earlier on Wednesday 14 Dinamo supporters were caught by police with knives, flares and a telescopic baton.

A video published on social media appeared to show a group of Dinamo supporters dressed in black and making Nazi salutes as they made their way towards the stadium.

Police had predicted potential trouble, closing a big chunk of the San Siro near the away section in order to minimise clashes between home supporters and the around 4,000 Dinamo fans present at the game.

Scuffles between ultras armed with sticks



After the match the AC Milan-Dinamo Zagreb match was lively, the Champions League match won 3-1 by the Rossoneri. At the end of the match, according to what has been learned so far, groups of ultras of the two teams armed with sticks confronted each other not far from the stadium.

The ultras came into contact in via Capecelatro and the police – reads a note from via Fatebenefratelli – “used tear gas to block the actions of the fans who had gone to the stadium with the clear intention of confronting violence”.

During the clashes, 13 Croatian fans were stopped and accompanied to the police station, while the same fate during the day was touched by another 36 ultras guests, 23 of whom were reported. The commissioner of Milan, Giuseppe Petronzi issued 19 Daspo for a duration of one year against 19 visiting fans and one for two years for a Croatian citizen found in possession of seven knives. Two AC Milan fans aged 26 and 29 were instead arrested at the entrance to San Siro because they were discovered at the stadium despite the Daspo.

UEFA laid a slew of disciplinary charges Wednesday against Marseille and Eintracht Frankfurt after disorder at their Champions League game including a fan of the German club making a Nazi salute.

Frankfurt was charged with four offenses including "racist behaviour" at its 1-0 win in Marseille on Tuesday.

Late Tuesday, the German club published a statement condemning the incidents and stressed it "stands for tolerance and diversity."

"Antisemitic ideas are in stark contrast to the unequivocal and unshakeable values of the club and its roots," the club said.

Marseille faces five UEFA charges including "crowd disturbances," with violence at the match resulting in injuries to 17 police officers and two German fans, one of whom sustained a serious neck injury after being hit by a flare, national police said Wednesday.

The latest incidents of stadium violence in France came just days after 32 people were injured in a mass brawl between ultras from Nice and German club Cologne last Thursday before a Europa Conference League match.

Tuesday's match in Marseille was classified as very high risk, considering violent elements among both groups of supporters, and a large-scale police operation successfully contained the risk of fan violence in the city itself.

Tensions were elevated by late Tuesday afternoon when a huge police escort took a group of Frankfurt ultras -- numbering around 500 -- up a long road to a designated fan zone.

Event held despite threats from anti-gay groups, an official earlier ban

Riot police clashed Saturday with soccer hooligans in downtown Belgrade, where a pan-European Pride march was held despite threats from anti-gay groups and an official earlier ban on the march in the traditionally conservative Balkan state.

Tensions were high in the Serbian capital as ultra-nationalist fans hurled stun grenades, stones and flares at a police cordon, which repelled the attack with batons and riot shields. Hundreds of Pride march supporters, meanwhile, gathered a few kilometres away in the pouring rain, dancing and singing their march was held on shortened route.

"We need justice and freedom," said Goran Miletic, one of the Pride event organizers.

Although several Pride marches have been held in Serbia in the past years, the Slavic nation that is formally seeking European Union membership appears to be sliding toward Russia and its conservative traditions.

Holding rainbow flags, hundreds of LGBTQ activists and their supporters marched through a central Belgrade area that was sealed off by police who put up metal fences and stood in cordons in full riot gear.

U.S. Ambassador Christopher Hill was among the participants. Hill told N1 regional television that "we are all brothers and sisters and God's children."

"It's an important day for equality and an important day for this country as well," he said.

As the column passed by a church in central Belgrade, bells constantly tolled, reflecting the Serbian Orthodox Church's staunch opposition to the Pride events. Participants of the march then headed to a concert.

Earlier, Serbian activists said the main reason for the march is the fight for more rights for the beleaguered LGBTQ community in Serbia, including laws that would regulate the rights of same-sex partnerships, such as inheritance, property and other issues.

Serbian police this week banned the parade, citing the risk of clashes with the far-right activists. But organizers on Saturday said they received guarantees from Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic, who is a lesbian, that the event could go ahead.

Brnabic said she was proud that during "this entire week, with more then 130 (LGBTQ) events, there wasn't a one single incident. And that really is the right image of Belgrade and Serbia."

Brnabic said 5,200 police officers were deployed on Belgrade streets during the Pride march, 64 people were detained and 10 policemen sustained sight injuries.

A far-right party leader said Brnabic should have been arrested and charged with treason for allowing the march to be held.

The European Pride Organizers Association chose Serbia's capital three years ago to host the annual event, hoping it would represent a major breakthrough for a Slavic country that is traditionally conservative and strongly influenced by the Orthodox Church.

EU and other Western officials, as well as rights groups, had urged populist Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic to allow the Pride march but Vucic had claimed that police can't cope with possible riots by right-wing groups amid the energy crisis brought on by the war in Ukraine.
