England - Hungary - 13/10/2021

Trouble at England game: Hungary fans clash with police at Wembley

Ugly scenes unfolded at Wembley on Tuesday night as Hungary fans clashed with police at the start of Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier against England.

Last month’s meeting between the sides in Budapest was marred by monkey chants aimed at Raheem Sterling and Jude Bellingham.

FIFA ordered Hungary to play two home FIFA competition matches behind closed doors, one suspended for two years, following racist behaviour by supporters.

The fanbase was again under scrutiny in London, with the travelling supporters booing as England players took the knee before kick-off.

Clashes then broke out in the away section, with police seemingly using batons in an attempt to control the crowd before appearing to be forced into the concourse.

“Shortly after the start of the match, officers entered the stand to arrest a spectator for a racially aggravated public order offence in relation to comments directed towards a steward,” read a Metropolitan Police statement.

“As the officers made the arrest, minor disorder broke out involving other spectators.

“Order was quickly restored and there have been no further incidents at this stage.”

FA will be investigating the incident
The Football Association said it would be investigating the incident, in addition to reporting it to international governing body FIFA.

“We are aware of an incident in the away section during tonight’s FIFA 2022 World Cup qualifier at Wembley Stadium,” read an FA statement.

Bruges police announce measures to control Man City fans ahead of Champions League clash after Man United visit in 2020 - 15/10/2021

Source : https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/

Manchester City travel to Bruges next week to face Club Brugge in the Champions League, with 1500 away fans expected to travel.

Manchester City fans travelling to Bruges next week will be subject to some extra safety measures, the city's police say.

City face Club Brugge at the Jan Breydel Stadium looking to bounce back in the Champions League from defeat at Paris Saint-Germain last time out in Group A. Brugge held PSG in their last home game, before taking three points from RB Leipzig in Germany to move above City after two games.

Around 1500 City fans are expected to travel to Bruges for the fixture, with many making a day trip, or spending one night in the historic Belgian city.

In anticipation, the Bruges police say they will implement extra measures to control the English fans, citing the behavior of some Manchester United fans when they visited in 2020.

"Because a lot of fans make the crossing to Bruges, we provide extra safety measures," Lien Depoorter, spokesperson for Bruges Police, is quoted as saying by HLN.

"In the Jan Breydel Stadium, approximately 1,500 places are reserved for visiting supporters. United Kingdom, it is expected that most supporters will not arrive in Bruges until the day of the match.

"They are known for being clearly present in the streets. The catering operators are already being asked not to promote the drinking of strong drinks or heavy beers."

HLN say bars in Bruges centre will be prohibited from selling drinks in glasses from 1pm on the matchday, with this rule also counting for a one kilometre radius of the stadium. Operators will be able to place a tap installation on licenced terraces to speed up serving.

England : Police hunt 18 men after violence between West Brom and Millwall fans - 15/10/2021

Source : https://www.yorkpress.co.uk/

Still CCTV images have been published of football fans West Midlands Police want to speak to after ugly scenes at the Hawthorns last month involving West Brom and Millwall supporters

Police are closing in on 18 football fans after sickening footage leaked online showed West Bromwich Albion and Millwall supporters clash during the Championship fixture last month.

Glass bottles were launched between the two sets of supporters during half-time with a metal fence used to segregate the fans being ripped away as tempers flared.

During the footage, a football fan was knocked unconscious on the floor as the ugly scenes continued at the rear of the Smethwick End at the Hawthorns.

The victim who was protected by those in Albion shirts, has since been identified and will be spoken to further in due course, officers confirmed.

West Midlands Police, meanwhile, has today released still CCTV images of men they want to trace - at the top of this article - following the disorder which took place on Saturday, September 11.

The force has reiterated its zero tolerance towards violence at football, outlining how anyone found guilty of crimes at fixtures could face a football banning order of up to 10 years as well as the sentences handed down by the courts.

In an update to BirminghamLive , sergeant Lizzie Lewandowski, from the West Midlands Police football unit, said: "This was unacceptable and needless violence which caused members of the public to fear for their safety. Football should be a safe place for all.

"As part of our investigation we've identified a number of suspects and I'd urge the suspects or anyone who knows them to come forward and give us their names."

Millwall call police after removing hooligans’ offensive stickers taunting Tottenham - 14/10/2021

Source : https://fanbanter.co.uk/

A “disgraceful” antisemitic poster was also put up by hooligan firm ‘Millwall Berserkers’ which has since been taken down by the Championship club and reported to the British Transport Police.

The south London outfit condemned the sticker poster, which had the words ‘Achtung Juden’ [attention Jews, in German], along with the Tottenham Hotspur symbol, and blood.

Season 20/21 - October - Page 3 Socg

The poster included the symbol of hooligan group, which has previously posted the neo-Nazi odal rune on its Instagram page, a Nazi-style eagle and death threats to the left.

After saying the poster had been removed from a cycle path by its stadium, near South Bermondsey station, the club said: “Millwall Football Club has a zero-tolerance policy against discrimination of any kind.

“This is a disgraceful action which the club immediately reported to the British Transport Police. Millwall will provide them with full and comprehensive cooperation with their investigation and any individual or group identified will be banned from the club for life.”

Millwall FC Supporters Club said it “abhors any such comment or content and that such material has not been produced or distributed by anyone with our knowledge. Whoever did so does not represent the Millwall fan base.”

Paula Griffin, who noticed the sticker and shared it onto social media, said she has got “used to some pretty nasty stickers that the club apparently seems fit to leave there… Seems to have reached a new level of hate when people in England feel they can post up such antisemitic stuff as this.”

The BTP have been asked for a statement.

Season 20/21 - October - Page 3 Hzfc

Spurs have a historic connection to the Jewish community, and rival neighbouring clubs have been accused of using antisemitic chanting and rhetoric, including the use of the term ‘yid’.

The word Yid is a Jewish ethnonym of Yiddish origin. It is used as an autonym within the Ashkenazi Jewish community, and also used as slang by European football fans, anti-semites, and others. Its usage may be controversial in modern English language.

In 2020, Tottenham Hotspur criticised the Oxford English Dictionary for new definitions of the words “Yid” and “Yiddo” which include references to the club.

The OED has updated its entries for the words to include “a supporter of or player for Tottenham Hotspur Football Club”.

The dictionary’s publisher, The Oxford University Press (OUP), said in a statement that the word is labelled as “offensive and derogatory”, with reference to Tottenham Hotspur being “a reflection of the evidence for the word”.

“As we state at the closely related word YID… Tottenham Hotspur Football Club is traditionally associated with the Jewish community in north and east London, and the term is sometimes used as a self-designation by some Tottenham fans,” it added.

“We will ensure the context for this connection is very clear in both definitions.”

The OUP said the OED was a “historical dictionary” that “records the usage and development of words in the English language”.

“We reflect, rather than dictate, how language is used which means we include words which may be considered sensitive and derogatory. These are always labelled as such,” it added.

Polish hooligans joined with Hungarian yobs in far-right alliance to viciously attack cops at England match - 13/10/2021

POLISH hooligans joined forces with Hungarian yobs in a far-right alliance to viciously attack cops at England’s World Cup clash.

Season 20/21 - October - Page 3 Ns6a

Brazen fans were seen wearing traditional red and white Polish shirts and flying the country’s flag in the visitors’ section at Wembley.

Fifa, the FA and Scotland Yard have all launched an urgent investigation into the worrying scenes which marred the opening ten minutes of England’s 1-1 qualifier draw with Hungary.

The ugly confrontation, in which police were beaten back with kicks and punches, prompted fears about the Three Lions’ next home game against Albania.

It is believed racist thugs from the two Eastern European countries allied in protest at England players taking the knee.

One former Polish hooligan, who would not be named, said: “The Poles bought tickets en masse and if you look at the footage, you can see slogans relating to Polish hooliganism on their backs.

“One was wearing a jacket representing Zaglebie Sosnowiec, another had a LKS Lodz jacket on and another was wearing a balaclava with a Polish flag on the front of his hoodie.

“I saw a Fighting Anchor, a Polish resistance logo, too. This is what they do, the two countries travel around Europe together to these games with notoriety and cause trouble.”

Polish fans later boasted on social media how they had, “joined forces with their Hungarian brothers to chase the dogs from their Wembley home”.

Another fan added: “There is a long-standing right-wing alliance between Hungarian and Polish fans.

"They are united by religion and they are totally opposed to any form of diversity.

“The same thing will happen again next month when Albania visit Wembley. I guarantee it. It will be a high-risk match.”

Questions were yesterday being asked as to why the Met Police seemed to be so quickly overwhelmed and why they were not in full riot gear.

One former riot squad officer told The Sun: “Given the reputation of the Hungarians, I was surprised to see how lightly equipped and dressed officers at the ground were.”

Cops were attacked after arresting a Hungarian fan accused of racially abusing a steward.

Tory Party co-chairman Oliver Dowden described the clashes as “deeply disturbing”, adding: There’s clearly still an underlying problem with racism in football.”

The Met came under fire in July after shambolic scenes at the Euro 2020 final when ticketless England fans stormed gates at Wembley.

Ligue 1 needs to crack down on fan violence before it is too late - 15/10/2021

Source : https://www.theguardian.com/

French fans have always been fiery but the severity and frequency of their clashes this year have been genuinely scary

Season 20/21 - October - Page 3 1ktn
A firecracker explodes beside Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes

Fan unrest is not new in French football. In the last decade alone, Bastia supporters have thrown wooden rods at PSG players, Anthony Lopes has been hit by a firecracker while playing for Lyon and an effigy of Mathieu Valbuena has been hanged at the Vélodrome. There have been other incidents too, but they have been infrequent and usually the product of some special enmity between two clubs, or a player and a club.

This season, however, these clashes have taken on a more urgent character, as striking in their severity as they are in their frequency. The rest of Europe is not immune to ugly incidents, as we saw at Wembley this week when Hungary fans fought with police, and earlier in the season when young Sparta Prague supporters booed the Rangers player Glen Kamara. But the number of incidents in Ligue 1 is alarming.

Season 20/21 - October - Page 3 A6ll
A Bastia fan strikes PSG player Lucas Moura with a stick in 2016.

There is a strong history of making your voice heard in French society, as seen in the gilets jaunes protests (which caused serious havoc on the Ligue 1 schedule in the 2018-19 season) and, more recently, in the series of demonstrations against the Covid-19 vaccine passports. But there seems something uglier and more menacing about the anger coming from football fans.

To trace the roots of the protests, violence and unrest this season we have to go back to January, when Marseille supporters – if they can be called that – invaded their training ground to protest against what they saw as a lack of ambition from their club. At a time when fans were not even allowed inside stadiums, the ultras breached the gates of the training ground and set off fireworks, firecrackers and smoke bombs, causing fires and even injuring the defender Álvaro González.

The fans were granted their wish in the end. Marseille reacted to their anger, appointing Pablo Longoria as president and strengthening their squad in the summer. Perhaps other fans have taken note because the anger shown by Marseille fans in January has spread throughout in France. Instead of being content to be back in stadiums, the seething anger has boiled over after the reintroduction of fans into grounds.

The opening weekend of the season was meant to be a joyful time for supporters in France, who were returning to stadiums for the first time in 18 months, but the football was overshadowed by violence from the start. The match between Montpellier and Marseille was marred by the home crowd throwing objects, including a bottle that struck Marseille midfielder Valentin Rongier in the mouth. The referee halted the match, but play continued after 12 minutes. This has been the pattern in France – the officials stop the action if necessary but try to finish the match so they do not rile the home fans further.

Montpellier is known to have a fairly fiery atmosphere, but Marseille are not one of their natural rivals so the violence came as a surprise. Montpellier’s head of security, Pierre-Marie Grappin, warned the fans over the loudspeaker that they were “in danger of giving Marseille the greatest gift” and the match was played out without further incident, Marseille winning 3-2. In the aftermath, Montpellier were hit with a partial stadium closure, with manager Olivier Dall’Oglio lamenting: “It’s still regrettable because it penalises everyone.”

Marseille were back in the news a fortnight later over an incident that started in a similar fashion, with bottles being thrown on to the pitch. Dimitri Payet, no doubt frustrated with being on the receiving end of such treatment twice in two weeks, threw the bottle back into the crowd. While Payet’s actions were unwise, the fans’ reaction was doubly so, as they stormed the pitch, coming to blows with several Marseille players and staff.

Season 20/21 - October - Page 3 Ivns
A Nice fan invades the pitch to confront Marseille player Dimitri Payet.

Marseille manager Jorge Sampaoli was apoplectic. Initially he had to be held back from the melee by his backroom staff and then, when it looked as if the game might resume, he put on his backpack and made for the exit. The match was eventually abandoned after 70 minutes, with Nice leading 1-0. Nice were hit with a two-point deduction, one of which was suspended, and the match will be replayed in its entirety in Troyes in two weeks’ time.

Again, the home fans cost their team. The race to qualify for the Champions League has no shortage of contenders so laying down a serious marker against a direct competitor would have done wonders for the confidence of Nice, who were only three matches into Christophe Galtier’s tenure.

Things have hardly improved in recent weeks. The Derby du Nord between Lens and Lille last month saw both sets of fans behave poorly – albeit towards each other and not the players – by scaling the fence that separated them as a melee delayed the match for close to an hour. That match was played to its conclusion, with Lens winning 1-0, but they were hit with a ground closure in their next home match, against Strasbourg.

Season 20/21 - October - Page 3 1bxj
Fighting between Lens and Lille fans at their match in September.

A similar theme was in evidence a few days later, when Marseille supporters clashed with their counterparts in Angers, both sets of fans invading the pitch to scuffle with each other. The violence just continues – a brawl between Bordeaux and Montpellier fans left half a dozen people in hospital, and Metz fans gave PSG supporters a less-than-kind welcome on the same weekend, throwing bottles.

Things are no better in Ligue 2, where there have been a couple of incidents within the last few weeks. Le Havre forward Khalid Boutaïb briefly scuffled with a fan last month, and objects were thrown on to the pitch when Ajaccio hosted Niort.

Season 20/21 - October - Page 3 Xrjc
Marseille and Angers fans clashed in September.

The problem seems to be getting worse. A serious injury or worse is becoming inevitable. Marseille shared images of their players’ injuries on social media after the pitch invasion in Nice. Thankfully none of them were forced into hospital.

The LFP has acted decisively in handing out partial or full stadium bans, but has been reluctant to give points deductions. If the league and its financial watchdog, the DNCG, are all too happy to relegate clubs based on their financial situation, should points deductions not be deployed more readily in these cases? And can the authorities not help clubs by beefing up security? The ease and speed with which the fans got on to the pitch in Nice was truly scary and the situation would have been much worse had it not been for the intervention of several Nice players. If action is not taken quickly, Ligue 1 could soon gain a far more disquieting reputation.

Bolton vs Wigan derby marred by fans throwing objects

Several fans were ejected from the stands and missiles thrown onto the pitch in an ill tempered local derby between Wanderers and Wigan at the University of Bolton Stadium.

There was a heavy police presence inside and outside the stadium and a tense atmosphere in the stands as the Latics thrashed Whites in the League One clash.

Police had warned in the build up to the game there would be extra patrols and those causing disruption would face swift action.

The game had to be stopped on several occasions at items were thrown onto the pitch.

And the disruption continued outside ground.

Hundreds of fans were caught up in trouble close to the Horwich Parkway Train Station and outside Bolton Arena.

One witness said: "Police had riot gear on as they were dealing with it.

"There we're dozens of officers there.

"It wasn't just the normal sort of trouble you sometimes see, it felt a lot more unpleasant.

"An ambulance drove off from near Bolton Arena with its blue lights on. I just hope it wasn't a serious casualty.

"Clearly the match didn't go Bolton's way and there was a lot of anger in the stands at that. But it was all threatening to boil over.

"We saw at least three or four Wigan fans escorted out and at least one Bolton fan near us too."

An ambulance was called left the scene at around 5.15pm.

Injuries and casualties are unknown.

Arrests in riots after NEC-Vitesse; fans finally home more than 2 hours after the match

NEC supporters vandalized a police bus and threw sticks and stones at officers. The police carried out several charges.

Buses of the Vitesse supporters had to wait a long time in the bus lock of the Goffert Stadium until the situation outside calmed down. It was only more than two hours after the game that they could finally board the bus to start the way back to Arnhem.

In the run-up to the derby, there have been several confrontations between supporters of Vitesse and those of NEC. For example, slaughter waste was dumped back and forth. In the night from Saturday to Sunday, there would have been a fight between Nijmegen residents and Arnhem residents at an industrial estate in Arnhem South. One person has been injured, but the police are still investigating whether there was an agreed meeting.

Spartak Trnava - Slovan Bratislava - 17/10/2021

Source : https://sportnet.sme.sk/

The police in Trnava are currently monitoring the situation in the city after the prematurely ended football match between FC Spartak Trnava and ŠK Slovan Bratislava. Slovan’s fans moved to the train station in the police cordon and, according to information from the spokesperson of the Regional Directorate of the Police Force in Trnava, Mária Linkešová, the train had already left the Trnava station.

The hit of the 11th round of the Fortuna football league between Spartak and Slovan did not finish on Sunday. Referee Filip Glova ended it prematurely after a long break caused by fan riots.

After about a quarter of an hour of play, the direct fight for the first place in the table was interrupted by the spectators, who broke into the playing area and there were also physical confrontations between them. After the skirmishes, one of the fans had to be treated by medical staff directly on the lawn and taken away on a stretcher. The situation calmed down only when the hard-core police cleared the sector of visiting supporters who continued to use pyrotechnics. “We will summarize and evaluate the implemented security measures on Monday (October 18), ” said Linkešová.

The players of both teams were waiting in the cabins, after a half-hour break Glova came out of the tunnel and gestured to end the match. Security measures were carried out by police throughout the day. To ensure public order, the commander of the measures in the streets of the city of Trnava set aside several dozen police officers, mainly from the services of the riot, traffic and criminal police. Special units, police officers from the field of cynology and hippology with horses, were also ready to intervene.

Hooligans from abroad came to Trnava trained and organised, system failed to detect them - 16/10/2021

Source : https://spectator.sme.sk/

The police and football associations have an information system to detect problematic individuals and groups.

"Each one in their own sector, don't throw pyrotechnics," the commentator repeated helplessly during the Sunday football match between Spartak Trnava and Slovan Bratislava.

Polish hooligans boasting on social networks about how they train in martial arts and then test their skills on the streets, cared very little about what the organisers were telling them.

One, wearing the balaclava of the Polish football club Katowice, kicked a Slovan fan unconscious on the ground, and then fled with a crowd of other extremists.

The people the Sme daily interviewed perceive the violence at the match as a sophisticated and planned attack by hooligans from Trnava, Katowice, and the Czech city of Ostrava.

First they climbed the roof above the sector where the Slovan fans were located, throwing firecrackers at them. Afterwards, dozens physically assaulted the Slovan fans, who had always been breaking rules and throwing firecrackers.

European countries have their own database of problematic fans about which the organisers of sports events should beware. They are supposed to share the information with other countries.

Two fans arrested for using smoke bomb during Marseille-Lorient

L’Équipe report that two individuals have been arrested and placed under police custody following last night’s Marseille-Lorient match for setting off smoke bombs inside the Stade Vélodrome.

The match, which saw Marseille run out 4-1 victors over the Brittany side, saw the arrests as the home side have a suspended one-point deduction still ongoing following incidents during the trip to Angers.

In addition, several Marseille fans had used tear gas against opposition supporters at the end of the match, but the individuals in question are yet to be identified by authorities.
