Two Birmingham fans were arrested following an allegation of racist abuse aimed at the Peterborough defender Nathan Thompson. The incident is alleged to have occurred during the second half at the Weston Homes Stadium. A complaint of racist abuse from visiting supporters was made to the referee, Jarred Gillett, by Thompson.

Peterborough said in a statement: “We can confirm that two Birmingham City supporters have been arrested following the allegation of racist abuse aimed towards defender Nathan Thompson during the second half.

“Thompson reported the incident straight away to the match official who spoke with the fourth official before the two individuals were identified and detained. The football club condemns any form of discrimination and will work with the authorities.”

Birmingham said in a statement that the club has a “zero-tolerance policy towards any form of discrimination” and that they “will continue to assist the police in their investigations” and would “firmly support the action taken against anyone found guilty of such abhorrent behaviour”.

CHAOS engulfed a Ligue 1 match between Lens and Lille after the home side’s ultras invaded the pitch, forcing the second half to be postponed.

In a shameful act of intimidation, Lens supporters marched towards the traveling Lille fans.

The game was delayed for around 30 minutes.

Fan trouble in France reared its ugly head once again with a group of Lens supporters confronting their Lille counterparts during the Ligue 1 clash.

French outlet RMC Sport, via GFFN, reports that seats were thrown in the clashes while a fan and a police officer have been injured.

Lens and Lille are known rivals with the match between them known as the Derby du Nord (Northern Derby).

The first half was tightly contested but tensions had been brewing after the home fans unveiled a banner reading ‘Lillois Merda’ – the latter being a colloquial French word for ‘suck’.

The match was goalless at half time with little incident but shortly after the players went down the tunnel a sizeable group of Lens fans ran onto the pitch.

These scenes are a sad indictment into the state of French football as they resemble the scenes in Nice last month where fans stormed the pitch to confront Marseille players.

That match was called off, however, Lens vs Lille resumed after a 30-minute delay.
