England : Millwall football violence worst for years, say police - 29/01/2019

VIOLENCE that marred the weekend’s FA Cup match between Millwall and Everton was ‘the worst seen for some time’ at a football fixture, a senior Metropolitan Police officer has said.

Clashes between home and away fans erupted outside the Den in south-east London before Saturday’s kick-off and after the final whistle, leaving an Everton supporter scarred for life.

Jay Burns needed more than 20 stitches after he was slashed across the face in fighting captured on video.

Specially trained police reinforcements had to be drafted in to bolster the 200 officers on match duty and managed to quell the disorder with batons.

The Met condemned the ‘abhorrent behaviour’. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist said: ‘The violence went on for a considerable amount of time and involved up to 50 people.

‘It resulted in at least one serious injury when a man was taken to hospital with a life-changing injury to his face. One of our officers was also injured and has been discharged from hospital.’

He said part of the police inquiry will focus on the causes of the trouble.

‘It is too early to say if this was a return to the bad old days of football, but the scale of violence is the worst we’ve seen for some time, especially for London.’ The ‘pre-meditated’ nature of the conflict is also thought to be a line of inquiry.

The Football Association and Met Police have also launched investigations after footage emerged of racist chanting by Millwall supporters during the match, which the home side won 3-2.

The club’s chief executive Steve Kavanagh told BBC Radio 5 Live yesterday: ‘It’s an issue that is out there in society. We will take responsibility for our guys, but let’s find a way to try and work together to find different solutions to get this education piece across.’

Millwall said on Sunday they will hand lifetime bans to anyone identified using racist abuse.

Dutch fans arrested after chanting ‘Jews burn best’ on Holocaust Memorial Day

Dutch police arrested five football supporters allegedly for singing at a match an increasingly popular chant about burning Jews.

The incident, which reflects both growing resolve to punish chanters and the proliferation of antisemitic sports chants, took place near the De Kuip stadium in Rotterdam on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Jan. 27.

“My father was in the commandos, my mother was in the SS, together they burned Jews ’cause Jews burn the best,” the suspects chanted, according to the Centre for Information and Documentation on Israel, a Dutch watchdog on antisemitism known as CIDI. It called the chant a “recurring problem” in a statement.

The suspects, who were fined £440 ( €500) each, allegedly were cheering for the Feyenoord team of Rotterdam, who won a match over Amsterdam’s Ajax team.
Ajax is one of several European football teams that are seen as historically Jewish. Fans from rival teams often taunt supporters and players of the supposedly Jewish teams with antisemitic limericks and symbols, though the song about burning Jews is seen as among the most offensive of these taunts.

The chant, whose use was first reported by the media in 2015, has proliferated in the Netherlands and Belgium in recent years.

France : Marseille ordered to play home games without fans - 28/01/2019

Source : http://en.rfi.fr/

French first division chiefs on Monday ordered Marseille to play their home games behind closed doors as a punishment for the violence that disrupted their league match against Lille.

The match on 25 January at the Vélodrome was delayed for 35 minutes after a firecracker was hurled from the stands.

"It hit me on the back, then it fell and exploded next to my foot," said Marseille's Jordan Amavi who was standing on the touchline near his teammate Kevin Strootman and the assistant referee.

"Because of the serious nature of the events, the commission is going to look into the matter throughly. During that time the Vélodrome will be closed," said a statement from the French league's disciplinary commission.

The 67,000 seat Vélodrome - one of the most celebrated venues in European football - is renowned for the fervour of the fans.

A ban on supporters is the latest blow to Marseille.

They have won only one of their last 11 games and have been eliminated from the Coupe de France and the Coupe de la Ligue.

Marseille, whose next home game is against Bordeaux on 5 February - lie eighth in Ligue 1 after 20 games following the 2-1 loss to Lille.

Torquay United ban fans after flares thrown onto pitch

Torquay United have banned supporters for anti-social behaviour during a match.

Pyrotechnics, including flares, were set off during the Gulls' 3-2 defeat at Bath City.

United described the behaviour as 'provocative and disruptive,' and the club are continuing to work with police.

A Torquay United club statement reads: "We wish to place on record our thanks to members of the Yellow Army that have assisted in identifying the offenders that were responsible for this provocative and disruptive behaviour. We are continuing to work closely with the police in bringing offenders to justice.

"It should be noted that unacceptable and potentially criminal anti-social behaviour includes the use of pyrotechnics, such as smoke/light devices and flares.

"We continue to work closely with our away clubs to monitor the behaviour of a minority of our supporters and to identify the individuals that are tarnishing the reputation of the Club and its dedicated fanbase.

"The safety and security of all spectators is a responsibility that the Club takes very seriously. With the support and assistance of all true supporters of the Club we will continue to work and will not hesitate to take every available action against those that wish to cause intimidation and disruption home and away."
