Liverpool and Merseyside Police urge ticketless fans not to travel to Europa League final
Jurgen Klopp, the Liverpool manager, has been forced to retract his appeal for ticketless fans to head for the Europa League final, warning of “chaos” if too many converge on Basel.
Klopp’s about-turn followed statements from both the club and Merseyside police. Uefa has granted Liverpool the paltry allocation of 10,000 seats when they meet Sevilla on May 18, and there are increasingly frantic efforts to ensure only those allowed in make the trip. In the immediate aftermath of Liverpool’s semi-final victory over Villarreal, Klopp promised a Red army of 100,000 descending on the Swiss city. St-Jakob Park holds just 35,000.
Speaking after his side’s 2-0 win over Watford, Klopp delivered a different message. Unprompted, the German coach admitted he spoke with too much emotion when he made his earlier remarks. He began his post-match briefing with a statement. “A few minutes ago I heard today was my 49th game as Liverpool manager which means I have given 5,000 press conferences,” said Klopp.
“I’ve said lot of things in these press conferences, I don’t remember them all, but the last time I spoke, I spoke about Basel, and I spoke like a supporter. I do it sometimes, because I like this game.
“I invited all Liverpool fans to Basel, and that was not too smart to be honest. It is a nice City but it’s not ready for us. That was my mistake. So I have to take back my invitation to the fans, and please only people with tickets should go there, because everything else will be chaos.
“If you cannot be there, then stay at home or come to Liverpool and watch the game with your friends and let’s have a party after this. It’s really, really important you now listen, – you don’t have to listen to what I say, but listen to this. It’s important we only send the team and the 10,000 fans.”
The club also released its own message to those who cannot get a ticket.
“Liverpool Football Club is reminding fans who are unsuccessful in obtaining a match ticket not to travel to Basel for the Europa League final,” it read.
“Uefa confirmed that Liverpool received an allocation of just 10,236 tickets. Following meetings with Uefa and the Local Organising Committee in Basel on Friday, Liverpool FC is strongly advising fans not to travel to Basel unless they have an official match ticket. Liverpool has fans all over the world and the club wants to make them aware that the surrounding infrastructure in Basel is only set up for match attendees. Transport will be restricted and all local accommodation is sold out.” Another strongly worded response followed from Merseyside police.
Chief Supt Jon Ward said: “The force is working closely with the Swiss authorities and FC Basel in ensuring that this great occasion can be enjoyed by all in a safe environment. While we understand and appreciate that many Liverpool fans will want to travel to Basel, I would encourage fans who do not have tickets to not travel. Both facilities and accommodation within Basel are limited and ticketless fans will not be allowed near the stadium.”
Liverpool have some hope their allocation will be slightly extended. Sevilla could send tickets back, which will make more available for Merseyside fans.
The 2,000 tickets allocated for Liverpool’s priority rights holders – the former shareholders and former club directors whose sale to Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr guarantees them a cup final ticket for their lifetime – were also given a deadline of midnight on Sunday to claim their place. Should any of those not be sold by then, they will extend the general sale allocation, which is currently below 5,000.

Riot police called in as Liverpool and Sevilla fans brawl before Europa League final
Eyewitnesses reported that there was no segregation in place between the Liverpool and Sevilla fans behind one of the goals, possibly leading to the fight breaking out.
Journalist Andy Hunter, who is covering the match, tweeted: "No segregation between the Sevilla and Liverpool fans behind the goal where a fight broke out before ko. Riot police arrived few mins later."
Liverpool fan Viktor Fagerström said: "Sadly there's a fight going on at the stadium between Sevilla and Liverpool supporters. Dozen people or so apparently."
And Joseph Musker added: "Police doing f*** all, no segregation as a fight spills out, Sevilla fans coming into Liverpool end."
TV images showed one Liverpool fan with blood pouring from a head wound, possibly after being hit by one of a number of bottles seen being tossed from the stands above.
Journalist Jonathan Wilson tweeted: "The stand where the fighting happened is split, Sevilla to the left, Liverpool to the right with just an aisle (no stewards) between them.
"The riot police have now taken up positions in the aisle and at the bottom of the stand where the fists were thrown. All calm now."
The revelations will place further pressure on hapless UEFA chiefs, who have been criticised for picking the 37,000 capacity stadium for such a big cup final.
Both clubs have been given just 7,000 tickets each to sell on to supporters, meaning thousands of fans have been left to watch the match on TV in clubs and pubs around the city.

2 arrested after hundreds storm pitch in Cyprus Cup final
Cyprus police say two people aged 16 and 21 have been arrested after hundreds of fans stormed the pitch to celebrate Apollon Limassol winning the Cyprus Cup final.
Police spokesman Andreas Angelides said riot police had to make limited use of tear gas to disperse the crowd of around 400 Apollon fans on the pitch after 2-1 win over Omonia Nicosia on Wednesday.
Angelies said on Thursday that three riot police suffered minor injuries.
He said some of the Apollon fans hurled firecrackers, flares, and other items at Omonia fans in the stands. Some 40 Omonia fans then invaded the pitch to hurl objects at Apollon fans.
Angelides said stadium staff was responsible for security and checking fans for banned items.

Europa League final: 17 Liverpool fans arrested and released - 19/05/2016
Source : http://www.skysports.com/
Seventeen Liverpool fans were arrested - and subsequently released - following incidents at Wednesday night's Europa League final in Basel.
Basel police made 30 arrests in total, with the other 13 being Sevilla supporters or locals.
All of the arrests were for offences outside the ground, and none of those incidents involved violence. They were primarily for forged tickets and all of those arrested have now been released.
Police had to be called into the St Jakob-Park stadium following skirmishes between the two sets of supporters.
The Spanish club sold just 7,000 of their 9,000 allotted tickets and Liverpool fans appeared to occupy almost three-quarters of the 35,000 capacity stadium.
There did not appear to be any segregation between the rival fans in the end housing the Sevilla supporters.
A small scuffle broke out between approximately 20 to 30 supporters but petered out fairly quickly after stewards arrived on the scene.
Police then arrived to line the aisle and provide some segregation between the sets of supporters.
Local police said that none of those involved in the trouble inside the ground were arrested as they did not receive any complaints from Basel football club.

Fans injured after stadium railing collapse in Brazil
More than a dozen football fans were injured on Wednesday when a stadium railing collapsed during a Copa Libertadores match in Brazil.
The incident occurred moments after former Brazil international midfielder Michel Bastos scored a late goal as hosts Sao Paulo beat Brazilian rivals Atletico Mineiro 1-0 in the first leg of their quarterfinal.
Television footage showed the injured fans fell about three meters to the ground from the Morumbi stadium's first tier.
Officials said the metal barrier at the front of the grandstand gave way due to pressure from supporters who were celebrating Bastos' goal.
The game was halted for about five minutes while an ambulance crew came to the aid of at least one fan.

Police horses used on Millwall pitch to control fans following invasion during play-off semi-final
Police horses patrolled the pitch at Millwall on Friday night after fans ran on to the playing surface following the Lions' League One playoff semi-final victory over Bradford.
Neil Harris's side celebrated a 4-2 aggregate victory over their Yorkshire opponents to book their place at Wembley, drawing 1-1 on the night after a 3-1 win at Valley Parade last week.
Supporters staged a pitch invasion immediately after the full-time whistle, with some fans running towards the travelling Bradford fans.
Those who had made the trip south were housed in the upper tier of the stand, minimising the chance of any trouble between the two sets of supporters.

Livorno goalkeeper punched by fan
Shocking reports from Livorno, where a fan punched goalkeeper Carlo Pinsoglio in the face after the team’s relegation.
Livorno were relegated from Serie B with last night’s 2-2 home draw against Virtus Lanciano.
The Amaranto had been 2-0 up, but a debatable penalty - and red card - got Lanciano back into it before a late Pinsoglio howler.
La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that the team stayed in the locker room until 1.30am to avoid the crowds of angry ultras outside.
When the squad did get back to the Tirrenia training ground, Pinsoglio was walking to his car with his parents when accosted by a hooligan.
The supporter punched him in the eye and ran off.
Livorno go down into Lega Pro for the first time in 14 years.

Sevilla and Liverpool fined for supporter brawl during final - 21/05/2016
Source : www.marca.com
Liverpool and Sevilla are facing disciplinary action due to the behaviour of their fans during this week's Europa League at the St Jakob-Park stadium in Basel, UEFA said on Friday.
Both clubs have been charged by European football's governing body following crowd disturbances at the match on Wednesday.
Liverpool have also been charged due to their fans setting off fireworks. Sevilla's supporters have been accused of throwing objects.
There were skirmishes between supporters of both teams prior to Sevilla's 3-1 victory in Switzerland.
Liverpool and Sevilla fans were sharing one end of the stadium and when scuffles broke out there was initially only a small stewarding presence in position to prevent fighting.
Police entered the terrace minutes later and stood between the two sets of fans.

Two stabbed amid AC Milan-Juventus violence
Police have arrested one Rossoneri fan after a group of supporters ambushed a local bar, with several incidents occurring across the capital before the Coppa final.
On Sunday night, pockets of violence broke out across Rome, with two people stabbed in a bar before the Coppa Italia final.
The match ended with Juventus lifting the trophy after extra-time, during which the duo were being treated in hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
At around noon, a local bar in the Prati area of the city was ambushed by three buses of AC Milan supporters, leading to a 26-year-old and a 40-year-old suffering stab wounds.
Police have identified all of the passengers on board the bus, arresting a 19-year-old after seizing weapons, including knives.
Across the capital, authorities were dealing with fan trouble, with one Rossoneri supporter handed a banning order after the discovery of fireworks on their person as they entered the ground.
Meanwhile, a Milan and Juve fan were both arrested for aggressive behaviour towards law enforcement, while two further spectators who attempted to gain entry without tickets were arrested by police.

Rangers v Hibs: Police confirm 11 arrests in the aftermath of Scottish Cup final pitch invasion - 22/05/2016
Source : http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/
POLICE have confirmed that 11 arrests were made in the aftermath of the pitch invasion that marred Hibs' Scottish Cup victory against Rangers.
An injury-time winner from skipper David Gray sealed the Leith club's first tournament success since 1902, but it was the ugly scenes on the full time whistle that cast a shadow over their achievement.
As fans streamed on to the Hampden pitch, confrontation and clashes erupted, with Rangers players and staff coming under assault, goalposts being brought down and turf being tore up.
Celebrations were interrupted, as the Hibees' squad were forced to wait to get their hands on the cup, and a lap of honour was also cancelled.
Revealing the arrests for "minor offences", Police Scotland encouraged witnesses to assist with their enquiries.
Chief Superintendent Kenny MacDonald said: “An investigation team has now been established at Helen Street Police Office. So far there have been 11 arrests for minor offences.
"Officers are in the process of collecting CCTV footage and collating the information that has been gathered at this stage as they try to identify those responsible for the disorder and violence on the pitch.

Rangers call for independent investigation into 'shameful' Scottish Cup final scenes as Hibs chairman plays down crowd trouble - 23/05/2016
Source : http://ecogreendata.com/
Rangers have reiterated their calls for an investigation in the crowd trouble which marred Saturday’s Scottish Cup final after criticising Hibernian chairman Rod Petrie’s attempts to downplay the violent scenes at Hampden.
Several Rangers players were assaulted as thousands of Hibernian fans flooded on to the pitch following the Edinburgh club’s dramatic 3-2 triumph.
Footage showed Lee Wallace being punched and goalkeeper Wes Foderingham attacked as the celebratory pitch invasion turned ugly.
Dozens of Rangers fans also came on to the pitch and fights broke out between rival supporters, while Hibs fans broke one of the goalposts and ripped up sections of the Hampden turf.
Petrie, who's the vice-president of the Scottish Football Association, put the scenes down to ‘over-exuberance’. In the immediate aftermath and described them as ‘unacceptable’.
A club statement later confirmed Hibs would ‘co-operate fully into any inquiry into the pitch invasion which followed the club’s historic Scottish Cup win at Hampden Park’.
However, Rangers have again reacted angrily and in a scathing statement demanded both the SFA and Police Scotland take swift action against those responsible.
It read: ‘Rangers finds it incomprehensible that no-one, either from within the Scottish FA or Hibernian Football Club, has condemned Hibernian’s supporters following the violent scenes at the end of yesterday’s Scottish Cup final when Rangers players and members of our backroom staff were physically and verbally assaulted.
‘We've not even had the courtesy of any contact whatsoever from Hibernian to ask after the well-being of those who were attacked by their club’s supporters.
‘There must be a full independent investigation into the shameful scenes at Hampden. Rangers is also at a complete loss to understand why certain individuals have hastily attempted to gloss over the appalling events which unfolded at the end of Saturday’s final.
‘No matter how many times Hibernian’s chairman and Scottish FA vice-chairman, Rod Petrie. Certain other biased commentators wish to play down Saturday’s mayhem and violence, the truth mustn't be distorted.
‘What unfolded on Saturday can't and mustn't be put down to exuberance. That's a complete insult to Rangers, our supporters. Those individuals who were intimidated and attacked.
‘It was clear to most of those who watched in horror that the Scottish FA’s security procedures failed when Hibernian’s fans went over the top in their thousands.
‘It's to be hoped that all of Scottish football will share Rangers’. Disgust and any attempts to attach blame to our supporters for the disgraceful and violent behavior, which led to our players and fans fearing for their safety, won't be accepted or tolerated by this club.’
The statement went on to acknowledge that a ‘tiny majority of Rangers fans also encroached on the pitch but only after having been faced with prolonged and severe provocation’.
The club said it was ‘preposterous to suggest Rangers fans were somehow to blame, as some commentators appear anxious to do’, adding that the ‘thuggish behavior must be investigated and as many culprits as possible brought to book and formally charged’.
It concluded: ‘So, let everyone be clear on one thing –. Rangers demands that players, staff and fans be protected from the violence and hatred of supporters of other clubs.
‘Rangers fully expects the Scottish FA and Police Scotland to take action to provide our people with a safe environment. When players are unable to accept medals at the end of a final because of fears for their safety and our supporters are alarmed and extremely concerned for the women and children among them, then surely every step must be taken to ensure that this is never repeated.’
Hibs own statement did add that the club ‘reiterates its regret at the events which unfolded immediately following the final whistle’.
Rangers players were handed their medals in the dressing room, while Hibs players had a long wait to lift the trophy after the pitch was cleared, with the lap of honor cancelled.
The SFA, along with Police Scotland and stadium managers, have launched an investigation into some of the worst scenes of violence seen inside a Scottish football ground since the 1980 final, when Celtic and Rangers fans battled on the Hampden pitch. The Scottish Government is ‘liasing closely’. With the inquiry.
Police are collecting CCTV footage and have appealed to spectators who may have information, images or video footage.
Chief Superintendent Kenny MacDonald said: ‘An investigation team has now been established at Helen Street Police Office. So far there have been 11 arrests for minor offences.’
