Barcelona Fined €30,000 for Political Banners at 2015 Champions League Final - 23/07/2015
Source : http://bleacherreport.com/
Barcelona have been hit with a UEFA-imposed fine for displaying a politically driven message during their 3-1 win over Juventus in last season's Champions League final.
An Associated Press report (h/t Yahoo Sports) states Barca has been ordered to pay €30,000 after fans unfurled pro-Catalonia banners during May's final. The banners were calling for Catalan independence from Spain.
According to the report, "UEFA rules prohibit political, religious, and offensive banners and gestures at matches it organizes." It's a rule clearly designed to maintain some distance between sport and socio-political agendas.
Barcelona released a statement on the sanctions:
“FC Barcelona respects UEFA’s decision that was relayed to the Club on Thursday in relation to the Champions League final in Berlin, however, it does not agree with that decision, especially in the light of the UEFA delegate’s description of the Barça members and fans’ behaviour as excellent, both before, during and after the game, as stated in their report.
With the aim of defending the rights of the Club and its members and while respecting current legislation, the Club’s legal services will consider the possibility of questioning the fine announced today, Thursday. Our conviction is that the rights of the Club and members are not incompatible with current legislation.”
The club has long championed its Catalan roots with many homegrown stars emerging from its youth ranks. Players such Carles Puyol, Xavi Hernandez, Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets and Andres Iniesta are prime examples from recent generations.
This incident is another one that's seen Barcelona fall foul of one of football's main governing bodies. The club is currently serving a FIFA-imposed transfer ban.

Kukesi v Legia Warsaw abandoned after crowd trouble
Crowd trouble caused the abandonment of Thursday’s Europa League qualifier between Kukesi and Legia Warsaw in Albania.
Legia had just taken a 2-1 lead in the first leg of the third qualifying round tie when their player Ondrej Duda was hit by an object thrown from the stand.
Play was immediately suspended as Duda was taken off the field on a stretcher and had his head bandaged, but he was soon back on his feet and even changed his bloodied shirt in anticipation of a restart which never came.
A post on Legia’s official Twitter account read: “The game in Tirana is suspended. Ondrej Duda was hit with a stone by Kukesi fans.”
Ten minutes later, they added: “Official: the FK Kukesi - Legia game is ended. It will be probably declared forfeit, as Duda was hit with a stone by Albanian fans.”
No announcement had been made on that subject by Uefa.

England : Reading FC fan banned for three years for throwing flare - 31/07/2015
Source : http://www.getreading.co.uk/
A Royals fan who threw a flare towards the away end during a pitch invasion after the team’s FA Cup game against Bradford City has been banned from the Madejski Stadium for three years.
Keiron White, 20, from Helston Gardens in Whitley , admitted going onto the pitch at the stadium and throwing the flare in the direction of the Bradford supporters.
However, his defence pointed out White was on the field with hundreds of other supporters and insisted he did not throw the flare at the away fans but was just trying to throw it off the pitch.
White handed himself in to police after seeing an appeal showing him with the flare on the internet.
The banning order means White cannot enter the Madejski Stadium on match days and also means he is banned from a part of Reading town centre during games.
In addition to his banning order, District Judge Davinder Lachhar also made White pay a £150 fine, with court costs of £150 and a victim surcharge of £20.
His ban ends in July 2018.

England : Eight men arrested over Southend v Cambridge football hooligan violence that left victim in coma - 09/07/2015
Source : http://www.essexchronicle.co.uk
Police have arrested eight men on suspicion of assault and violent disorder which left a Cambridge United football supporter in a coma.
Simon Dobbin, 42, and a small group of other supporters were assaulted in East Street, Southend, by a group of men who came out of the nearby Railway Tavern.
Mr Dobbin, from Mildenhall in Suffolk, suffered a head injury and was knocked unconscious in the incident, which happened at around 7.15pm on Saturday, March 21.
He was transferred to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge and was placed in a medically induced coma. He is now conscious but remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.
This morning’s arrests included a 23-year-old man from Rochford, a 23-year-old man from Lewisham, a 27-year-old man and a 30-year-old man from Westcliff, a 19-year-old man from Basildon, a 29-year-old man from Leigh, a 19-year-old man from Wickford and a 22-year-old man from Southend. They currently all remain in custody.
A further man a 39-year-old from Southend was arrested on Thursday June 25, and questioned and bailed.
It brings the total number of arrests made to 17. All of those previously arrested remain on police bail, pending further enquiries.
DCI Martin Pasmore, of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, who is leading the investigation, said: "Our investigation is progressing and it will take time to piece together the actions of all those involved but my team and I are determined to bring those responsible for this sickening attack to justice.
"I want to make it clear that Mr Dobbin was an entirely innocent person enjoying a day out watching a football match.
"He was not involved in any earlier quarrels or incidents and it could have been anyone's loved one attacked on the day and now looking at the possibility of having to live with a permanent brain injury.
"I ask that those who know what happened do the right thing and make contact either directly or in confidence through Crimestoppers.”

Belgian clubs hit by new violence but league denies it's on rise - 20/07/2015
Source : http://www.insideworldfootball.com
Football-related violence and hooliganism is back on the rise in Belgian football, according to statistics released by the Belgian interior ministry. The Pro League vehemently debunks such an assertion.
Supporters violence in Belgian football has always been linked to the 1985 Heysel drama when 39 fans lost their lives at the European cup final between Juventus and Liverpool. The Heysel stadium was outdated and not fit to host a match of such a magnitude.
Little has changed three decades later with few stadiums in Belgium meeting UEFA's requirements. Current Belgian champions AA Gent boast a state-of-the-art stadium with the Ghemlanco Arena. The construction of a new national stadium is envisaged by 2020.
Authorities have provided a framework to ensure safety at Belgian grounds and curb hooliganism with the 'Voetbalwet' [Football law], but violence remains a problem.
Last season 118 violent incidents were registered in the top flight and second division, according to the interior ministry. The majority of incidents were isolated cases, not head-on clashes between different sets of supporters, but they do highlight a 30% increase from the 2013/14 season.
Last week violent Beitar Jerusalem fans marred the UEFA Europa League qualifier at Chaleroi by throwing flares on to the pitch – an incident that is now being investigated by Israeli authorities as part of a larger problem with the Beitar club. On Sunday 60 Lazio Roma fans targeted Anderlecht fans at a metro station in Brussels ahead of a friendly between the two clubs.
"The reports about the increasing violence depart from correct data, but create the image that football is facing a resurgence of violence," stated the Pro League, representing Belgian's professional clubs, in a press release. "That's far from the truth."
The Pro League pointed out that more prosecutions reflected 'a continuing professionalisation of security enforcement.'
"Hooliganism is reduced, top flight football is safer every year and the many families who attend more and more matches in our stadiums are the best proof," concluded the statement.
Interior ministry statistics show offenders were severely penalised. 985 people were banned from stadiums and fines amounted to €439,720. The harshest punishment during the 2014-2015 season was a 39-month ban and €2,000 fine.
