Argentine fans burn cars, clash with police as team loses
The burnt out hulk of several cars, some still in flames, bore testimony on Monday to the continuing violence by fans that mars football in Argentina, particularly when teams face relegation.
Fans of Dock Sud, who were losing 1-0 to Deportivo Laferrere in the Primera C (fourth tier) championship, rioted near the end of their match setting cars alight and fighting with police, who responded with rubber bullets and tear gas.
The referee abandoned the match, the second such decision in four days after Friday's rioting by fans of San Carlos, who were losing 2-0 at home to Boca Unidos and doomed to relegation from the second tier Primera B Nacional.
The Argentine Football Association is expected to uphold the result of the match at San Carlos which would seal their relegation.
Police chief Fabian Perroni told TN television that no arrests had been made at Dock Sud, a club from the port district of the same name on the outskirts of Buenos Aires.
Away fans are banned in Argentina in a government measure aimed at curbing fan violence, though it appears to be having little effect.

Cyprus : APOEL Nicosia - AEL - 22/04/2014
Source : http://www.sbs.com.au
Police blamed after fans clash outside stadium
Club officials of APOEL and AEL hit out against the police on Tuesday after scuffles broke out between fans of both sides prior to kickoff. Witnesses said that trouble erupted on the Nicosia-Limassol motorway, just shy of the GSP Stadium and yards away from the Nuevo Camp Futsal Pitches. Fights also broke out at both roundabouts between fans, further highlighting gaps in police's security measures ahead of the heated encounter. The fire services were also called to several fields outside the ground after small fires were spotted while the fights on the motorway also brought traffic to a temporary standstill. State television later reported that nine people were arrested in connection with the violence while four people – two police officers and two fans – were also injured. One fan was last night in hospital in serious condition after being struck in the eye by a stray rock that had been thrown. More arrests are also expected to take place according to one police official. “In the last seven days, we held four meetings with the police in a bid to enforce preventative measures,” APOEL media officer Nektarios Petevinos told Super Sport FM. “It seems that the only thing we managed to achieve was successfully wasting our time. The police informed us that officers would be present in large numbers. Well where are they?” He added, “Instead of looking forward to what should be a great game of football, we are forced to discuss the police’s inability to properly marshal fans travelling to the ground.” Meanwhile, AEL general manager Ploutis Avraam also questioned the measures of the police, going as far as to accuse them of being “unprepared” to act. “Security measures were not honoured and as a result, our fans were attacked by APOEL fans after becoming trapped. We have already informed the Justice Minister [Ionas Nicolaou]. The police came unprepared. We are fortunate that the situation didn’t escalate.” Police spoke Fighting between rival fans has become a frequent phenomenon in Cyprus in the last ten years despite continuous campaigns by the clubs, the Cyprus Football Association (CFA) and the police. Yesterday, police spokesman Andreas Angelides hit back at claims that the police failed to take the necessary precautions saying that clubs were using the police as a scapegoat for the clashes that took place.

FOLLOWING clashes between fans on Tuesday that saw one man lose an eye and others injured, police on Wednesday conceded “weaknesses and omissions” in an operation to guard a high-risk football match in Nicosia, but said clubs and others were also to blame for the violence.
The chief of police has ordered an investigation into the circumstances that led fanatics to clash on the motorway before the game between Nicosia side APOEL and Limassol’s AEL at the GSP stadium in the capital.
A 27-year-old APOEL fan lost his eye after being hit by a rock.
The man, who didn’t take part in the clashes but was on his way to watch the game with his father, was reportedly sitting in his car when he was hit.
Around a dozen more people were injured including six police officers.
Police said they arrested nine suspects. A large number of firecrackers were also seized before the game.
“In no way is police claiming infallibility,” a police statement said. “Reviewing the facts to date and the planning of the operation, it is established that some weaknesses and omissions possibly existed.”
However, the statement said, from the first moment there was an effort to transfer all the blame on the police when other actors had failed to do their part.
Police said the clubs and other bodies did not adhere with what was agreed before the game, despite the assurances they had given.
The statement said club reps had agreed that organised supporters would not travel en masse without police escort but a section of AEL supporters gathered at the exit near Pera Horio outside Nicosia and headed to the GSP.
Police said AEL fans refused to be escorted by police, citing possible reactions, and also used a bus to travel to Nicosia despite agreeing not to.
APOEL supporters failed to follow the agreed routes to the stadium, police said, resulting in them meeting with AEL fans on the roundabout near the Mall of Cyprus.
The two clubs also rejected a police suggestion for AEL fans to get the southern stand, which faces Limassol and provides easier access to the stadium, to make it easier for the force to police the game.
“It is high time for all of us to engage in self-criticism and have the will to take measures,” the police said.
Sports authorities should intervene immediately, the statement said, and “supporters must isolate those individuals who create trouble inside and outside stadiums.”
Both teams blamed the police for not handling the situation properly and for not following the plan that was agreed upon by all sides, which said that fans from both teams shouldn’t meet on their way to the stadium.
Justice Minister Ionas Nicolaou, who has pledged to effectively deal with violence at football matches even back when he was an MP, did not respond to calls seeking comment.
Main opposition AKEL suggested that for the umpteenth time, Nicolaou could not rise up to the occasion.

Turkey : Besiktas, Fenerbahce and Galatasaray fans unite to protest against Turkish e-ticket system - 20/04/2014
Source : http://www.dailymail.co.uk
Fans from Besiktas, Fenerbahce and Galatasaray put aside their differences to protest against a common enemy this weekend - the authorities who want to introduce an electronic ticketing system at Turkish league matches.
Police were forced to use tear gas and water cannon to disperse hundreds of fans of the three Istanbul clubs who gathered on Istiklal Avenue, near the city's famous Taksim Square, to protest against the controversial system recently introduced by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF).
Fans' groups from all three clubs have blasted the new system which will allow police and security services to access private data when they buy match tickets.
Besiktas fans have already said they will boycott the derby with Fenerbahce on Sunday evening in protest against the new ticketing system, which they believe will exert too much control over fans.
The ticketing cards will allow the operator to access supporters' national identity data, bank account details and other private information, all of which can then by passed on to the police and the TFF.
On April 13, some 40 Turkish fans' groups signed a joint declaration urging supporters not to buy e-tickets and to boycott matches.

Ajax’s triumph after winning the championship title in Amsterdam on Sunday caused for a lot of celebration amongst fans. Some of it got out of hand, however, as police were forced to arrest 8- supporters who were misbehaving.
Even thought Ajax won the title by equalizing 1-1 against Heracles Almelo, fans still went all out with the celebrations. The fanatic supporters group 410 were banned from the match, which ran without problems. There was a lot of police presence, but there were no incidents in which they needed to get involved.
Searches at the gates made sure that fans didn’t bring fireworks into the stadium. Some Ajax fans did set off fireworks in a nearby café.
The Mobile Unit was present to watch over the festivities as groups of fans cheered when the final whistle was blown in Almelo. Many cafés on the Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein in Amsterdam were full of jubilant supporters. Police arrested some people there for possession of fireworks
The player’s bus took the Ajax team back to Amsterdam ArenA from Almelo on Sunday afternoon, where the team was honored. Around 35,000 supporters were present at the ArenA to witness the tribute.
The tribute went smoothly. Frank de Boer was honored with the Frans Banninck Cocq commemorative medal, which is given to people in Amsterdam who have given special services to the city for a period of at least ten years.
On Utrecht Centraal station, 30 supporters were arrested for vandalizing the train from Almelo to Amsterdam. The NS has pressed charges, and the damages will have to be paid by the vandals.
Later in the evening, police arrested a further 50 people in the center of Amsterdam, who were disturbing the peace after the tribute at the ArenA. The police report that one of their officers was bitten during the arrest. He was treated in hospital. Violence against public service agents incurs a high punishment with the Public Prosecution Authority.

Peru : Lima Football Stadium Temporarily Closed After Violence Breaks Out - 01/04/2014
Source : http://www.peruviantimes.com
Authorities in the district of Ate Vitarte closed one of Lima’s main stadiums for 30 days, following a violent confrontation over the weekend between football fans, daily La Republica reported.
Supporters of Lima’s Universitario de Deportes soccer club battled with each other over the weekend outside the Monumental Stadium, located in Ate Vitarte on Av. Javier Prado. Security videos showed what appeared to be hundreds of young men fighting on a dusty street outside the stadium, as a few police looked on.
A 19-year-old man was shot in the chest and killed in the incident, which was caught on video and published by local media.
The confrontation was allegedly over the distribution of tickets that the soccer club gives out to Universitario supporters. The Monumental Stadium is the home stadium for the club, known as “la U.” The club will have to play its upcoming games at another stadium, either in the port city of Callao or on the north coast in Trujillo — the National Stadium in downtown Lima, which is an alternate stadium for both Universitario and the Alianza Lima soccer club, is considered to be too expensive.
The mayor of Ate, Oscar Benavides, said the Monumental stadium will be closed until an investigation into the incident is completed and when better security is established.
As in Argentina and now less so in Colombia and Brazil, violence at certain Peruvian soccer games has become common among rival bands of supporters, reminiscent of the British hooligans and egged-on in the 1990s by sports tabloids. The soccer clubs have also encouraged the enthusiasm of “barras bravas” by handing out passes to the games and other perks.
In 2011, a supporter of the Alianza club was killed at the Monumental stadium during a game between the classic rivals Alianza and Universitario. The fan was pushed over a banister by soccer thugs from Universitario, who had attacked Alianza supporters watching the game from box seats.
In March, a court found two men guilty of the murder and sentenced them to 35 years in prison.
