The Bundesliga relegation/promotion play-off (the third-bottom team in the Bundesliga play two legs against the side which finished third in 2. Bundesliga) between Fortuna Dusseldorf and Hertha Berlin ended in chaos last night when hordes of Fortuna fans invaded the pitch, let of flares and began tearing up the turf before the final whistle had actually sounded.
With second tier Fortuna carrying a 2-1 lead over from the first leg and then scoring within 50 secs of the second, things were looking bleak for Hertha, whose fans repeatedly interrupted the game be throwing flares onto the pitch.
What then followed was seven minutes of stoppage time due to the earlier disturbances, with the fevered Fortuna fans positioning themselves around the perimeter of the pitch ready to charge on at the final whistle. Unfortunately, their frayed nerves got the better of them and the dam burst with two minutes left to play. Fans thundered onto the pitch, letting off yet more flares and smoke bombs, with some tearing up swatches of turf to take home as a memento.
The players, some of whom were attempting to clear the throng themselves, were ushered back into the changing rooms and forced to wait for 30 minutes while the pitch was cleared before returning to play out the final two minutes of injury time – after which, Fortuna could properly celebrate their promotion to the Bundesliga!

Violent clashes mar Wigan victory as pitch invasion breaks out at DW Stadium
Wigan's final home match of the season at home to already-relegated Wolves was marred by a couple of minor skirmishes at the final whistle after fans invaded the pitch. The Latics won 3-2 to secure an eight successive season in the Barclays Premier League and many of the near sell out crowd came on to the field at the final whistle. While it began as a good-natured celebration the party atmosphere turned unsavoury with those on the pitch taunting the away end. A couple of Wolves fans broke the line of stewards across the 18-yard line and scuffles were seen to break out with at least one man leaving the field with a bloodied face. However, the exchanges were very minor in nature and were not allowed to escalate and order was restored very quickly. With the threat of the players' end-of-season lap of honour being cancelled the playing surface was cleared quickly after an appeal over the stadium's PA system. The majority of the DW Stadium expressed their disapproval with boos and chants of 'Off, off, off.' Wolves players returned shortly afterwards to applaud their fans and were given a warm welcome by all four sides of the ground, before the Latics came out to thank their fans. Wigan manager Roberto Martinez was unaware of the incidents after the whistle but said he did not think it was representative of fans' behaviour as a whole. 'It was a real emotional game and we have real passion but the last thing you want to see is violence attached to the game,' he said. 'It is a little minority but it will not spoil the feeling of a party and achievement because I thought the fans were incredible throughout the season. 'They deserve a real feeling of satisfaction today.'

Alan Smith ‘spat at and punched’ during play-off pitch invasion
NEWCASTLE United’s Alan Smith was attacked as he left the field at the Galpharm Stadium last night.
On-loan Smith was “kicked and punched” by jubilant Huddersfield Town fans after their play-off win according to MK Dons manager Karl Robinson.
The midfielder – who controversially left nearby Leeds for Manchester United in 2004 – was abused as he warmed up.
Smith, 31, came off the bench late in the game and gave Robinson’s side hope when he pulled the score back to 2-1 on the night, and 3-2 on aggregate.
“It was embarrassing,” Robinson added.
“The Huddersfield fans were magnificent, and had this place rocking, but it’s one or two muppets – that’s all it is.
“He got spat at, kicked and punched. He’s fine, but you get worse than that. I’ve been brought up in Liverpool!”

Huddersfield Town to investigate pitch invasion
Huddersfield Town are to review the pitch invasion that followed the second leg of their League One play-off semi-final against MK Dons at the Galpharm. Dons player Alan Smith was reportedly involved in a fracas with supporters after the game, which Huddersfield lost 2-1, but won 3-2 on aggregate. In a statement, chairman Dean Hoyle said: "Last night was a great occasion. "It is upsetting that the tremendous achievement of reaching the final has been tarnished." He continued: "It goes without saying that we will look closely at what occurred. "I am not going to prejudice the outcome, but personally, as chairman of the club, I unequivocally condemn the actions of any so-called supporters who engage in anti-social or violent behaviour." After the match, Dons boss Karl Robinson, who helped former Leeds and Manchester United forward Smith off the pitch, told BBC Three Counties Radio: "The Huddersfield fans here have been excellent. So please don't point fingers at Huddersfield. "But there are two or three absolute mindless people. Yes there's history, but people move on in their careers." A statement from the Dons said: "MK Dons would like to place on record its thanks to Huddersfield Town Football Club for their swift response in reviewing events from last night. "The club are proud to have been part of a fantastic spectacle for League One and would like to thank both sets of supporters; unfortunately a small minority took it upon themselves to tarnish a great occasion. "The safety of supporters, officials and players is vital at any level of football and MK Dons will work with Huddersfield Town to ensure these incidents are prevented in the future." Meanwhile, the Football Association has confirmed it has written to both clubs to seek their observations on the pitch invasion.

Basketball-Greek playoffs postponed after bus attack - 17/05/2012
Source : Reuters
The Greek basketball playoff finals between Olympiakos Pireaus and Panathinaikos have been thrown into chaos after the first match of the series was postponed following an attack on the Greens teach bus which injured two of their players. The match, which was scheduled to take place on Thursday evening, was called off after fans of the Piraeus club pelted the Panathinaikos bus with rocks as it neared the stadium, smashing a window. Greece international forward Stratos Perperoglou and American forward Steve Smith were both admitted to hospital after complaining of eye pain but were later discharged, Panathinaikos team manager Manos Papadopoulos told reporters. The general secretary for sport Panos Bitsaxis along with the police will meet officials from both clubs as well as league organizers ESAKE to decide on the rescheduling of the match. “"Olympiakos unequivocally condemns the actions of those unknown persons and expresses its indignation; we are happy to learn that all team members of Panathinaikos are in good health," said the club in a statement. The violence came less than a week after Olympiakos triumphed in Europe's premier club competition, the Euroleague, against CSKA Moscow in Istanbul, taking over the crown from Panathinaikos who won the competition last season.

England: Eight arrested after rival football fans brawl on tracks at Huddersfield train station - 19/05/2012
Source : http://www.examiner.co.uk
HOOLIGANS armed with weapons battled on the train tracks as violence flared at Huddersfield Railway Station.
More than a dozen men fought in the station foyer before jumping on to the rail lines, causing massive disruption to services across the north over the weekend.
It is thought they were rival groups of football fans who had arranged the violent clash beforehand.
Police said the thugs hurled large barriers and shopping trolleys at each other as the nasty brawl erupted in the middle of the day.
A source at the station said the men began throwing objects at each other at about 4.20pm on Saturday.
They then jumped on to the tracks and continued to hurl stones at each other, before running off down the railway line towards the viaduct.
The source said the men continued to battle despite a police presence and ran off when a dozen officers arrived.
No passengers or station staff were injured, but a glass screen in the St George’s Square station was smashed and the floor damaged.
The police helicopter was deployed to search for the men and yesterday British Transport Police confirmed eight had been arrested.
It is thought the violence was linked to a number of earlier incidents in the town centre.
A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said four incidents of disorder had been reported in Huddersfield town centre on Saturday, including near The Hart pub on Cloth Hall Street and The Wellington on Westgate.
A spokesman for the British Transport Police, said: “British Transport Police and West Yorkshire Police responded to Huddersfield station at 4.25pm on Saturday following reports of serious disorder and people on the tracks.
“A large scale fight took place involving at least a dozen men during which shopping trolleys, barriers and other objects were thrown.
“A large number of people trespassed on the tracks, some walking towards Hillhouse.
“Trains were stopped in the area as police dealt with the disorder and the police helicopter was deployed.
“The tracks were checked and once clear were handed back to Network Rail at 5.13pm to resume services.
“This disorder is believed to be a continuation of disorder experienced earlier in Huddersfield town centre.”
Following the brawl British Transport Police moved extra resources to the area to monitor the situation. The disorder on the tracks caused massive disruption to rail services passing through Huddersfield – six trains were cancelled and 61 were delayed for a combined total of more than 14 hours.
The disruption in the region was further hampered by a broken down train near Marsden and services did not return to normal until midnight.
Shocked passengers turned to Twitter to describe the mayhem.
One called Bobby McFerrin, tweeted: “Madness by the train station, some guys with weapons running down a train? Only in Huddersfield.”
Another, Dom Partridge, sarcastically compared the mass fight to 2005 football violence film Green Street, starring Elijah Wood.
He said: “Love having my train delayed cos of some Green Street style fans at Huddersfield! Where’s Frodo when you need him?”
Carrie Cushman tweeted to her followers: “I got stuck in Huddersfield due to trespassers on the line. They ran straight past our window.”
Catrin Ann Jones, put: “Only in Huddersfield would the train be prevented from leaving because there’s a police chase occurring on the line.”
A joint investigation is now ongoing, including the analysis of town centre CCTV footage.

London gang stabs football fan to death after Chelsea FC win Champions League - and father is knifed as he runs to help
A father threw himself on top of his son in a desperate bid to shield him from a knife-wielding gang who stabbed him to death in the street.
Luke Fitzpatrick, 25, was murdered after a group of men armed with bats and knives dragged him out of a north London pub on Saturday night.
Friends and relatives of the roofer told today how his father, Bernard, was stabbed several times while trying to protect him from his attackers.
Mr Fitzpatrick’s attackers were described as acting like “a pack of wolves” by storming into the the pub near his home in Dollis Hill.
Police said the killing followed an argument in the pub though some witnesses said it ocurred after a dispute in a shop opposite.
Three people were arrested, including two 17-year-old men who still being questioned in custody today.
The victim’s best friend, Ricci Whiteside, 25, who was with him all evening said: “There was an argument in the shop opposite the pub at half-time. Luke wasn’t anything to do with it, but we all heard that something had gone on.
“A group of black guys arrived at the door of the pub with bats and knives and they were looking for someone who had been outside the shop earlier.
“People were throwing chairs at the door to try and stop them from coming in.
“There was a lot of confusion. They got Luke and dragged him outside. They were pulling him up the road.
“His dad was running after them. But by the time he got to Luke he was already on the floor. Bernie threw himself on top of Luke. He was trying to protect him, but it was too late.”
Tess Fitzpatrick, Bernard Fitzpatrick’s sister, said: “The men who came for Luke were like a pack of wolves. My brother ran after them as they were dragging Luke up the street.
“He covered him with his body, but they had already stabbed Luke all over.”
Ms Fitzpatrick said she had spent yesterday at the bedside of her brother, 56, who is believed to have been stabbed four times. He suffered massive internal injuries after one of the stab wounds punctured his liver.
Last night more than 100 friends and family gathered at the crossroads outside The Ox and Gate Pub on Oxgate Lane, where Luke was watching the Champions League final prior to the attack.
Many left tributes and flowers. One card read: “Luke, you was a true gent. I’ll never forget you.”
Friends and family told described Luke, who was single, as a big-hearted, energetic hard-worker, who was well known in the community.
Luke’s mother Constance, 56, was in Majorca with her other son Ryan, 21 on Saturday night. She flew back to London yesterday morning.
A relative at their home, just metres from the pub said last night: “She has just come back and she is grieving. She is terribly upset.”
A forensic tent was in place this morning at the murder scene, which remained cordoned off.
Detective Chief Inspector Tim Duffield said: “We urgently need to hear from anyone who was in or near the Ox and Gate pub around 11.30pm that evening.”

Argentina: Instituto players are threatened after loss to Boca Unidos - 15/05/2012
Source : http://www.examiner.com
We know that Argentine football is among the most passionate in the world. The fervent nature of the fans is well documented, but so is that dark side that has really haunted and aided in the downturn of the sport in that country.
The latest episode occurred in Monday's match where league leaders Instituto lost to Boca Unidos 3-2 and dropped to third place. The loss did not just mean them losing the top spot in the Nacional B. They lost one of the two spots that guarantees direct promotion to the top flight after a stretch of 23 matches that they found themselves there.
"If you don't win promotion, we'll kill you all. There's bullets for everyone."
This was not something that pleased fans of La Gloria, especially the barrabravas.
After the match it was reported that on the trip back to Córdoba from Corrientes, the club was threatened on the highway by Los Ranchos, a group of barrabravas that forced the team bus to stop in the middle of the highway and started to pound on the windows and threatened to kill the team should they fail to earn promotion.
