Scotland: Arbroath - Cowdenbeath - 18/02/2012

'Shame on the lot of them' — Arbroath and Cowdenbeath fans clash at Gayfield
Police raced to Gayfield on Saturday after a wild west-style brawl broke out between Arbroath and Cowdenbeath football fans.
Trouble broke out at the second division clash at half-time as Arbroath supporters made their way around the terracing to stand behind the Pleasureland end of the ground.
Usually when there is no segregation the Red Lichties will switch ends to stand behind the goal their team is attacking in the second half. However, the rival fans clashed and fighting broke out with punches thrown before police were forced to call in reinforcements.
The fighting was quickly brought under control and police and stewards formed a barrier between the fans who stayed behind the goal.
After the match the Cowdenbeath fans were kept behind and given a police escort to the railway station.
Police said they had identified 30-40 known troublemakers amongst the 1,100 crowd that were described as ''hardcore.''
A spokeswoman said they worked in conjunction with British Transport Police after the game to escort Cowdenbeath fans to the railway station and get them on the train.
She was unable to give details of how many people were arrested, but it is understood a handful of fans were removed from the ground by police.
The bust-up overshadowed the 1-1 draw and was the main topic of conversation among fans on message boards. The majority of supporters from both sides were quick to condemn the actions of the troublemakers.
One Arbroath supporter said: ''I have never, ever, seen a group of fans from any football club have to be held back inside Gayfield to stop them causing trouble. If Arbroath fans had to be held back in a football ground due to their behaviour during the match, I would be embarrassed.''
Another Red Lichtie said: ''The scrapping was a poor show. I've not seen the like in over 30 years as a Gayfielder. The Cowden young lads were looking for bother and some home fans were too happy to oblige.
''Shame on the lot of them. I'm with the 1,075 who wanted nothing to do with it.''
Another Arbroath fan posted: ''In my opinion both sets of fans have to take some portion of blame.
''The Lichties supporters I unfortunately can't see as wholly innocent in this whole sorry affair. However — and this a considerable however — the away fans were looking for trouble.
''As for the police, I think they handled the situation as effectively as they could have. Also, they ensured the trouble mob was escorted all the way to the train station after the game.''
A Cowdenbeath fan said: ''Before the game there wasn't any bother and there were no problems in the first half. There were several Arbroath fans in the south enclosure too and nothing happened.
''At half-time the Arbroath fans changed ends and tried to evict the Cowden fans from where they were standing. Yes, they should have moved and some did — me included. But others didn't and that's when the trouble started.
''In no way do I condone any misbehaviour by any fans, but maybe, just maybe, much of what happened yesterday could have been avoided with proper stewarding and not leaving it to the fans to sort it out for themselves.''

Lanús (Argentina) - Flamengo (Brasil) - Copa Libertadores - 16/02/2012

Nasty! Kid spits on Ronaldinho
“We would like to have won, especially after going ahead, but the result was good.” – Ronaldinho.
Considering Copa Libertadores holders Santos were defeated by Bolivian side The Strongest (great name!), Flamengo should be satisfied with their point gained in Argentina against Lanus.
Having taken a lead on the stroke of half time through Leo Moura, Lanus pulled level with 15 minutes remaining thanks to an equaliser by Cesar Carranza – highlights here.
There was though an unsavoury incident just before the break which illustrates the depth of hatred many Argentinians have for Brazilians and somewhat surprisingly has not been mentioned in the South American press from what we can see.
As Ronaldinho went to take a corner, a young Lanus fan spat on the buck-toothed legend in a shocking display, especially as it comes against one of the greatest players of recent times.
It was not only spit raining down on the former Barcelona forward, but lighters also come into shot, perhaps illustrating why Flamengo were more than happy to leave Argentina with a draw. Ronaldinho, meanwhile, had a poor game and was marked well by the Lanus defence.

Police warning as Ajax fans head to Old Trafford for Europa League clash with Manchester United - 21/02/2012
Source : http://menmedia.co.uk
Police fear there is a major risk of trouble ahead of United’s match with Ajax – after the first leg was marred by violence. The M.E.N. understands the Europa League clash on Thursday has been designated Category C with Increased Risk of Disorder, the highest level on police rating system. Police expect up to 1,000 Dutch fans to travel without tickets. A ‘significantly increased’ number of officers will patrol the area around Old Trafford and the city centre, while six ‘spotters’ will fly over from Amsterdam to identify known troublemakers. At the first leg, which the Reds won 2-0, police made 144 arrests – including 15 United fans. The night before the match a group of around 70 Ajax supporters were locked up for 24 hours in a bid to promote calm. Video footage has also emerged of mounted police charging fans in Amsterdam, where supporters of Belgian club Anderlecht were also arrested. The clips show United and Ajax fans hurling plastic beer cups at each other close to the Old Sailor pub before police intervene. Reports have also surfaced from last week’s clash of innocent Reds supporters being attacked in Holland and there are fears some United fans will be out for revenge. Police face an extra headache as Manchester City play Porto at the Etihad Stadium 24 hours before the United game. That creates the potential for fans of four clubs being in the city on Wednesday night, although it is understood officers do not believe followers of the Portuguese club will be out to cause trouble. Ajax, known to attract one of European football’s larger hooligan elements, have been given 3,900 tickets for the match. Chief Supt Mark Roberts, who will be in charge of the police operation, says the force will be prepared. He said: “Ajax have a trouble-making element just as some English clubs do. In Holland there were a lot more instances of United and Ajax fans drinking together peacefully. “There were instances of disorder and if that happens here we will act accordingly. “The vast majority of fans are decent and will come to enjoy the game. We will make sure they can do that.”

England: Police appeal to Pools fans - 23/02/2012
Source : http://www.hartlepoolmail.co.uk
POLICE are calling on Hartlepool United fans to tell them who threw objects at an opposition goalkeeper.
Two Pools fans were injured during the club’s home game on Saturday after keeper Stuart Nelson kicked a ball into the College of FE stand, known as the Town End, of the club’s Victoria Park.
The incident sparked anger among the home fans and objects were thrown at the Notts County player shortly after the second goal of Pools 3-0 win on Saturday.
At least one object hit the 30-year-old and caused him to fall down on one knee.
The game was then temporarily stopped as referee Oliver Langford and a Notts County physio checked he was ok.
Police are now asking Pools fans to help find those responsible for hurling the items onto the pitch.
A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “Police are continuing to investigate an incident which happened during a football match between Hartlepool United and Notts County.
“Officers are working closely with the club in order to identify the perpetrators involved and bring any offenders to justice.”
The Hartlepool Mail reported how two men needed first aid treatment for minor injuries after the ball was kicked into the home end.
It hit one fan in the arm before ricocheting into the side of the head of another at around 4.10pm on Saturday, February 18.
Both supporters received treatment at the ground from St John Ambulance medics, but did not need to be taken to hospital.
A few objects then seemed to be thrown from the College of FE stand, but soon stopped as fellow fans shouted for the missiles to stop.
A spokesman for Hartlepool United said: “The club are working closely with police to identify the fan who threw an object onto the pitch during Saturday’s game with Notts County.
“Play was held up for a short while after visiting keeper Stuart Nelson was struck by something thrown from the crowd in the
second half of the match at Victoria Park.”
Pauline McSweeney, secretary of the Hartlepool United Supporters’ Association, told the Mail after the incident that the throwing of objects has the potential to damage the club’s reputation.

Football fans arrested as Selfridges and Printworks forced to briefly close ahead of Manchester United Europa League clash with Ajax.
Hundreds of Ajax fans were escorted on foot to Old Trafford by police tonight after trouble flared in the city centre before the club’s Europa League match with United. They were being flanked by officers on the three mile journey to the stadium from Exchange Square, where many fans had gathered before kick-off. Three people were arrested and police said there was a small pocket of fighting in the city centre. It is understood a large group of fans of the Dutch club had been drinking in Exchange Square for some hours before kick off.
The city centre had been packed with shoppers enjoying late night Thursday shopping. It is understood Selfridges and the Printworks closed their doors briefly while they waited for the fans to move on. One city centre resident said: “Market Street was blocked off outside the Marks and Spencer’s store. There were lots of mounted police and police dogs. I saw riot police getting kitted up. “Many of the fans had been drinking. The police seemed to be moving them up the road towards the ground.”
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “It’s very busy in the city centre and we’re monitoring the city centre and all routes to the stadium.” The M.E.N. told on Tuesday how the match had been designated as having an increased risk of disorder, the highest level on the police rating system. Police said a ‘significantly increased’ number of officers would be patrolling the area around the ground and the city centre. At the first leg, which the Reds won 2-0, police made 144 arrests – including 15 United fans. Dynamo Dresden's German Cup ban overturned - 23/02/2012
Source : AP
Dynamo Dresden will be allowed play in the German Cup next season after the second-division side's ban because of fan violence was overturned by the German Football Federation on Thursday.
Dresden's ban was reduced on appeal to a fine of €100,000 ($132,400).
''We've understood the ruling to be a final warning shot,'' Dynamo president Andreas Ritter said. ''It's nice that the great tradition of the cup games has not been taken from us.''
The club must also play its league game at home to Ingolstadt on March 11 in an empty stadium, and its fans have been banned from the game at Eintracht Frankfurt five days later.
Dresden will need to compensate Frankfurt for the loss of income.
Dresden supporters clashed with police and rival fans at the second-round cup match at Borussia Dortmund on Oct. 25. The match was briefly halted several times when the fans threw firecrackers and flares onto the field.
Police arrested 15 people and Dortmund said about €150,000 ($198,500) worth of damage was caused.

England: Huddersfield Town and Preston North End fans have fight case thrown out after police failure - 25/02/2012
Source : http://www.examiner.co.uk
FIVE men accused of brawling after a Huddersfield Town match had their case thrown out – because police failed to deliver evidence in time.
Two men from Huddersfield and three from Preston had faced charges of affray after a disturbance broke out following the Town versus Preston North End Game in October.
But prosecutors have warned they will try and bring the case again.
The brawl is thought to have begun at around 5pm on October 22 inside the Gas Club, in Gasworks Street.
Yesterday at Kirklees Magistrates Court in Huddersfield, the Crown Prosecution Service made an application to District Judge Marie Mallon for the case to be adjourned as they were awaiting video evidence from the Football Intelligence Unit of the police.
But as the case had been previously adjourned she refused the application and discharged the case.
She referred to it as a “fracas in a public house” and told the defendants: “I am discharging the case against you.
“It does not mean it is the end of the case.
“None of you are on bail and therefore none of your previous bail conditions apply.
“You may leave the courtroom.”
Bill Astin, prosecuting, told the group that the CPS would not let the case drop.
He said: “It is the intention of the crown to proceed with this again”.
The court heard it was alleged that Nathan Wilson, 34, of Brighouse started the disturbance.
He is thought to have been arrested and taken out of the pub “in a matter of seconds” after facing “a line of police officers.”
Yesterday Mr Astin described Wilson’s case as being “on a different scale.”
Peter Whitehead, 45, of Oakes, was charged on November 5.
Preston fans Andrew Riley, of Higher Walton, Mark Wilkinson, 30, of Penwortham and David Hough, 36, of Woodplumpton, were all charged on December 19 and appeared in court for the first time on December 23.
Mr Astin said: “The police were asked for a compilation video with arrows over the individuals to see who is doing what to who.
“We are still awaiting this from football intelligence officers who have not yet submitted it.
“We did ask for this quite some time ago.”
Defending solicitors told Judge Mallon that their associates had seen videos of their clients at the police station and therefore they couldn’t understand why they were not “provided for disclosure.”
They claimed those should have been suitable for the crown.
A West Yorkshire police spokesman said: “We of course regret that the case has been discontinued.
“We will be looking at why this has happened and what we can do the future to prevent it happening again.”

England: Fencing to segregate fans outside Hillsborough - 24/02/2012
Source : BBC News
A temporary 7ft-high barrier is to be used outside Hillsborough at the end of Sheffield's football derby on Sunday to keep rival fans apart.
South Yorkshire Police said the barrier would be installed during the game between Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United which kicks off at 13:00 GMT.
Supt Simon Verall said it would be used to ensure crowd safety.
The force tested the barrier in January during an FA cup game.
Mr Verall added: "We're using the barriers to keep the crowd as safe as we possibly can.
"They won't be there before the game as people as walk in, but whilst the game is being played."
When questioned about the sensitivity over the issue of barriers being installed, Mr Verall said: "It's a bit unfortunate using this term barriers. Ultimately they are not inside the ground which would obviously be highly emotive at Hillsborough and we would never seek to do that.
"It's effectively a fence. It's not going to stop anyone walking out of the ground it is purely to keep the fans segregated for that little bit longer, like the same way they are in the ground."
South Yorkshire Police said between 250 and 400 officers would be on duty when about 37,000 fans visit the ground for the local derby.
Mr Verall said: "Through pro-active police work, and by clamping down on troublemakers, violence and disorder levels have decreased at local football matches.
"There are currently 121 people who are banned from attending the game on Sunday and future matches."

Liverpool FC fan stabbed to death ahead of Carling Cup final
A 26 year-old Liverpool FC fan was stabbed to death at a bar in London on the eve of the victorious Carling Cup final at Wembley.
The victim is thought to be former Wirral Grammar student Alex Jarmay who lived in Bromborough with his family.
Police were called to Bar Uno in Camden at around midnight on Saturday and found the victim collapsed and fatally wounded outside the Inverness Street venue.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives said the incident was not football related but football fan Mr Jarmay is believed to have travelled to the capital to watch Liverpool play Cardiff City.
A 17 year-old boy from London and three other men aged 23, 25 and 28 were arrested at the scene and taken into custody for questioning.
A Metropolitan police spokesman said: "The homicide and serious crime command is investigating.
"While officers retain an open mind as regards a motive, it is not believed to be football-related."
Tributes have been posted on Twitter from friends and Liverpool FC fans, including one tweet from The Farm vocalist Peter Hooton.
He wrote: "Thoughts go out 2 the family & friends of this Liverpool fan who lost his life in London puts everything in perspective."
Thomas Fairclough posted: "Terrible to hear about Alex Jarmay, thoughts with his family and friends. RIP."
And former work colleague Natasha Lally said: "So sad to hear about the fatal stabbing of Alex Jarmay. Such a nice guy, sadly missed."

Kaiserslautern has reported a group of fans to police after they allegedly insulted Israel striker Itay Shechter with Hitler salutes.
The struggling Bundesliga club says the incident occurred during practice Sunday, one day after a 4-0 loss at Mainz dropped Kaiserslautern to next to last.
The group of ''fewer than 10'' people are among hooligans that have been banned from games for years.
The club has asked police to investigate and possibly file charges and has urged fans to identify the perpetrators.
The club said it ''distances itself expressly from any form of racism, discrimination or anti-Semitism,'' Kaiserslautern said in a statement.

England: Football fans chants go ‘too far’ - 25/02/2012
Source : local press (thanks to the sender)
FOOTBALL fans in Bury St Edmunds were accused of ‘crossing the line’ in chants directed at a visiting player this week.
Lowestoft Town goalkeeper Andy Reynolds was subjected to cruel chants during Tuesday’s Ryman League Cup semi-final match against Bury Town.
The 24-year-old, from Bury, also reported coins and pens being thrown on to the Ram Meadow pitch.
He said: “It was probably one of the most hostile games I have played in. You ask your own fans to be committed and passionate but there’s a line that clearly some people crossed.”
He added: “I know on the whole it’s probably meant as banter and they’re probably not thinking about what they’re saying, but it’s a game of football and these sorts of things shouldn‘t happen.”
A fan, who was at the game, said “There’s generally good banter from the stands, but I thought the abuse of the Lowestoft goalkeeper was well over the top.
“Those singing that should really question why they even went to the game – was it to cheer Bury into a final or shout and swear at the opposition?”
Mr Reynolds, whose primary job is as a football coach, also voiced concern for the negative impact the game could have had on young people watching.
Phil Knight, Suffolk FA chief executive, said: “Suffolk FA deplores any acts of violent behaviour be it physical or verbal. Allegations have been brought to our attention but until we have received full reports it would be inappropriate to comment further.”
Russell Ward, Bury Town chairman, said he had apologised to Mr Reynolds for the chants but was unaware of anything other than a chip being thrown on to the pitch. There was some inappropriate chanting and we’re dealing with it,” he said.

South Korea to pursue Oman over football hooligans - 26/02/2012
Source : Yonhap
South Korea will seek punishment against Oman for their failure to control supporters in last week’s Olympic soccer qualifier between the two teams in Muscat last week.
South Korea’s under-23s won 3-0 to qualify for this year’s London Olympics but the game was marred by crowd trouble as fans hurled water bottles and other objects onto the pitch.
Tempers boiled over after South Korea’s third goal midway through the second half, midfielder Han Kook-young collapsing to the ground after a firecracker nearly hit him in the face.
“This is a clear-cut case and we expect some sort of penalty,” the Korea Football Association (KFA) told Yonhap news agency.
