Attacks by Serbian nationalists on Croatian fans have overshadowed the otherwise well-organized European handball championships in Serbia. Serbian fans also disrupted the semi-final between their country and Croatia.
The European handball championships in Serbia have been overshadowed by nationalist violence. On Tuesday, around 50 Serbian hooligans stopped a convoy of Croatian fans in the town of Novi Sad. They were on their way home from their team's match against France, which Croatia won.
They attacked the fans with rocks, bricks and concrete slabs and smashed 35 cars. Three people were injured. Although Serbian police reacted quickly and arrested 13 people, four cars with Croatian number plates were set on fire the next day.
Police apologized for the violence and promised to ensure the safety of all fans. The media in Serbia has been speculating on the reasons for the attacks: some Croatian fans had goaded Serbian fans during a match. It appears that a 15-year-old boy, who had been wearing the tournament's mascot costume, Tasa the Eagle, was attacked.
Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic tried to calm the waters, but not without a hint of distaste for the Croatian fans. "The attacks on Croatian fans damage Serbia's reputation. We should be better behaved than the Croats when they host a tournament."
Better preparations needed
"Of course, this [the attacks] sends out the wrong message," Sonja Licht, chairwoman of the think tank Belgrade Fund for Excellence told Deutsche Welle.
"Unfortunately, attacks like this happen everywhere, not just in Serbia, not just in the Balkans, but everywhere in Europe," Licht said. She emphasized that the authorities acted swiftly and efficiently.
"But there were no preventative efforts, so that's not good. The authorities should try and find out what the hooligans have planned in advance," Licht said.
Five thousand police were on duty to guarantee safety at the Serbia-Croatia match on Friday, which Serbia won 26-22. Croatian fans had a hard time as their Serbian counterparts accompanied almost every attack by the Croatian team as well as the national Croatian anthem with whistles and booing.
Serbian player Zarko Sesum was hit in the eye by a bottle, thrown by a Serbian fan, who had intended to hit the Croatian coach. Sesum will not be able to play in Sunday's final because of the resulting injury.
Nationalist platform
The handball championships have become yet another stage for Serbian nationalists, according to Sonja Licht. But she stressed that Croatian fans also used these types of events to provoke others by singing nationalist songs.
"Worst of all, these thugs think they act in the name of their country, that it's about national pride. But, really, they're doing the exact opposite, they insult their own country."
Licht said that before the war started in the former Yugoslavia, hooligans were used for political gain in Zagreb and Belgrade. "That's why society needs to do everything in its power to prevent extreme nationalism."
Popular sport
Handball is a leading sport in the countries of the former Yugoslavia. After the breakup of Yugoslavia, Croatia and Slovenia were particularly successful. But Serbian players are in high demand at clubs across the globe now, making it hard for national coach Veselin Vukovic to get them all together for practice sessions.
His efforts have paid off, as Serbia has reached their first semi-final in the European tournament as an independent nation.
Croatia have also shown they are on top form in this year's tournament. They were runners-up in the last two European championships and world champions in 2003.
The last time Serbia (then with Montenegro) won an international medal with the men's team was in 2001, when they got bronze at the World Handball Championship in France.

Argentina : Nueva Chicago club president requests leave of absence - 30/01/2011
Nueva Chicago football club’s president Antonio Fusca asked for a leave of absence for an indefinite period of time, after he received death threats following yesterday's clashes between two factions of the club's hooligans in the City neighbourhood of Mataderos that ended in the death of hooligan Agustín Rodríguez from a blow to the head. “They threatened to kill me and my entire family”, the Mataderos neighbourhood based club president told reporters as he accused “Los Perales” hooligans gang of “scheduling a meeting to allegedly talk about violence problems during the games.” The meeting was taking place yesterday's afternoon at the club’s headquarters when it was interrupted by "Las Antenas” faction. Then, the two factions started fighting for prominence within the club when the violence escalated. Clashes were taken outside the club's stadium and spread across three blocks to end with the murder of twenty-five year old Rodríguez.

Around 34,000 supporters attended the match which saw a large police presence both in the city of Sunderland as well as in and around the Stadium of Light.
Police said the arrests were made for a variety of low-level offences, mainly drunkenness or possessing alcohol in a sports ground.
Chief Superintendent Dave Pryer, of Northumbria Police, said: "Seventeen arrests out of crowd of that size is very low.
“I'm pleased that the vast majority of fans who attended today were clearly there to enjoy the football and were not interested in engaging in disorder.”
Around 2,600 Middlesbrough fans took up their club's offer of free transport to and from the Stadium of Light.

Chorley - Chester FC - 29/01/2012
Source : Chester Chronicle
Police vow to deal with football hooligans intent on causing trouble at Chorley v Chester FC match
LANCASHIRE police have vowed to deal with any hooligans intent on causing trouble during Saturday’s match between Chorley and Chester FC. When the Blues visited Victory Park last season, innocent Chester fans – including women, children and pensioners – were the victims of a frenzied attack by a mob of Chorley supporters. Blues fans were trying to make their way back to their cars and coaches when they were ambushed on a park adjacent to the stadium. Both sets of supporters had clashed before and during the game, which Chester won 1-0.
Police are warning troublemakers they will not be tolerated as they aim to avoid a repeat of last season’s violence. Chester FC have been given an allocation of 1,000 tickets, with more than 600 sold so far. Supporters are being urged to arrive early with the match kicking off at 1pm. Match Commander Inspector Steve Evans said: “It is one of the biggest games of the season for Chorley and I know everyone is really looking forward to it. “We have worked closely with both Chorley Football Club and local licensees and there will be a policing operation in place on the day in and around the ground as well as the town centre with the main aim being that everyone can enjoy the game safely. “There were some incidents of disorder when the two teams played each other last season and there will be a police presence at the ground. “Anyone who is looking to cause trouble should be warned that it will not be tolerated. The vast majority of people want to enjoy the game and do not need mindless idiots spoiling it for them. “I would also urge people attending the game to make sure they take the necessary crime prevention measures like keeping valuables safe and cars locked. We don’t want to give criminals that opportune moment to pounce.”

The Argentine Football Assocation has called off a third-division match, fearing an outbreak of violence in a game between the club Nueva Chicago and rival General Lamadrid. AFA suspended the game scheduled for Wednesday after the death on Tuesday of Nueva Chicago fan Aldo Barralda. Barralda was stabbed on Jan. 18 in a fight between rival hooligan gangs associated with Nueva Chicago. The hospital Santojanni said Barralda died of a lung infection. Violence is endemic in football in Argentina. The non-profit group Let's Save Football says 260 fans have died in football-related violence since 1924. More than a dozen fans have died of football-related violence in the past two years. Barralda's death again focused attention on a smoldering problem that Argentine police and AFA officials have been unable to solve. Barralda was believed to have been involved in the death of Agustin Rodriguez, the member of a rival hooligan at the club Nueva Chicago. Rodriguez's death prompted dozens of football hooligans to invade the Santojanni hospital two weeks ago, looking for Barralda and trying to avenge Rodriguez's death. The chaotic scene at the hospital was captured on closed-circuit television and was widely shown on national television and abroad. The camera caught the gang members barging past limited security at the hospital, and then throwing chairs and equipment in a hospital corridor as they searched for Barralda. No arrests have been made in the case.

Greece: Cars, stores hit in attack on Olympiakos fan club - 12/01/2012
Source : http://msn.foxsports.com
Police say a group of youths on motorcycles attacked an Olympiakos supporters' club in Athens, damaging the premises as well as 10 cars and 5 storefronts. No injuries have been reported.
The perpetrators, who used clubs and rocks but wore no identifying team insignia, left the scene quickly and police are looking for them.
Attacks on football fan clubs are frequent in Greece, which has seen an increase in supporter violence in recent years.
Police suspect the attack was carried out in retaliation for a similar incident against a Panathinaikos fans' club last week. In that attack, a kiosk owner who witnessed the incident was stabbed but not seriously injured.
