Chelsea fans' 'racist chant' probed

Claims that a group of Chelsea football fans were involved in racist chanting on a train back from the club's 0-0 draw against Norwich City are being investigated.

British Transport Police said they had been made aware of the alleged incident after the clubs' Premier League match.

"We were made aware of the incident on board the 1600 Norwich to London Liverpool Street Service," a spokeswoman said.

"It is alleged that some individuals were involved in racist chanting.

"British Transport Police has contacted the individual concerned who made the allegations and an investigation is ongoing."

Chelsea has vowed to take action against any fans proved to be involved in racist chanting.

A statement on the club's website said: "Chelsea Football Club is concerned to hear that a small number of fans travelling back by train from Norwich were alleged to be involved in racist chants and comment.

"We are working to help the relevant authorities identify those responsible and will take the strongest possible action should these allegations prove to be true.

"The club, like the overwhelming majority of our fans, strongly believe that all forms of discrimination are abhorrent and have absolutely no place in society."

The alleged incident comes just a week before Chelsea face QPR in a potentially explosive FA Cup tie at Loftus Road.

Nueva Chicago club president requests leave of absence - 24/01/2012

Source : http://www.buenosairesherald.com/article/90357/nueva-chicago-club-president-requests-leave-of-absence

Nueva Chicago football club’s president Antonio Fusca asked for a leave of absence for an indefinite period of time, after he received death threats following yesterday's clashes between two factions of the club's hooligans in the City neighbourhood of Mataderos that ended in the death of hooligan Agustín Rodríguez from a blow to the head.
“They threatened to kill me and my entire family”, the Mataderos neighbourhood based club president told reporters as he accused “Los Perales” hooligans gang of “scheduling a meeting to allegedly talk about violence problems during the games.”
The meeting was taking place yesterday's afternoon at the club’s headquarters when it was interrupted by "Las Antenas” faction. Then, the two factions started fighting for prominence within the club when the violence escalated.
Clashes were taken outside the club's stadium and spread across three blocks to end with the murder of twenty-five year old Rodríguez.

Charlton fans arrested over alleged racist chanting after Fulham game - 25/01/2011

Source : http://www.guardian.co.uk

• Nine men aged between 20 and 30 held in south-east London
• Alleged incident occurred on train after FA Cup defeat

Nine men have been arrested by police investigating suspected racist chanting by football fans.

Police received reports of a group of Charlton Athletic supporters singing racist songs on a train following their FA Cup tie at Fulham on 7 January.

Officers from British Transport police (BTP) and the Metropolitan police, accompanied by Charlton officials, visited homes in Bexley, Greenwich, Lewisham and Bromley, all in south-east London, early on Wednesday and arrested nine men.

Detective Inspector Ashley Cooper, leading the BTP investigation, said the suspects, aged between 20 and 30, were taken to a north London police station and are helping police with their inquiries.

Cooper said: "We launched Operation Midas after a group of men, who we believe to be Charlton supporters, boarded a train at Putney and were heard chanting racist songs – something which was both offensive and extremely intimidating for other passengers on board.

"My team of detectives have worked quickly to gather evidence and, by working closely with Charlton Athletic FC, coupled with excellent CCTV footage, intelligence reports and statements from witnesses, we've been able to move swiftly and make this morning's arrests."

Charlton's chief executive, Stephen Kavanagh, said: "This kind of abhorrent behaviour is totally condemned by our club and, in addition to assisting the police, for our own part we will be seeking to ban for life anyone who is found guilty of racially offensive chanting.

"We have been a pioneer of anti-racism and anti-discrimination initiatives in football, so, although these are isolated incidents and in no way reflect the overwhelming majority of Charlton supporters, these recent arrests are saddening to all those who have worked so hard over many decades."

On Saturday, a 48-year-old man, believed to be a Chelsea fan, was arrested at London's Liverpool Street station on suspicion of racially abusing a woman hours after the club's Premier League match at Norwich City.

The arrest came shortly after a separate incident when a group of Chelsea supporters were allegedly embroiled in racist chanting on a train back from the 0-0 draw at Norwich. No arrests have been made in connection with that incident.

Football fans held over disturbance

Two football fans have been arrested after a disturbance outside an underground station.

Strathclyde Police said they were called to Copland Road, next to Ibrox Subway Station in Glasgow, at around 2.50pm, just before Rangers were due to kick off against Aberdeen at home.

A spokesman for the force said two police officers had been injured as a result of the incident, which involved fans from both sides.

Ibrox mayhem as police charge brawling football thugs at subway station

Season 11/12 - January - Page 3 Footballthugsibrox67064

SHOCKED football fans told yesterday how they were caught in 15 minutes of mayhem outside Ibrox as Aberdeen casuals clashed with Rangers supporters.
One said: “It was the worst violence I’ve seen in years. I thought we’d heard the last of football casuals, but evidently not.”
Mounted police were called in and CS spray and batons were used after fighting erupted outside Ibrox subway station near the stadium 20 minutes before Saturday’s match.
Fans threw punches and hurled bottles and pieces of wood. Two police officers were injured and two people were arrested.
Witnesses said the trouble started when 30 to 40 Aberdeen casuals came out of the subway station on Copland Road and began baiting Rangers fans heading to the game.
The yobs had apparently boarded the train in the west end of Glasgow to avoid being segregated by police monitoring stations in the city centre.
A Rangers fan who saw the violence told the Record: “I knew something was afoot when I came out of the subway.
“There was a bunch of Aberdeen fans emerging right into the thick of the Rangers fans.
“They were all psyched up and immediately shouting for Rangers fans to come ahead.
“There were hundreds of fans and quite a few did ‘come ahead’ before the police had time to make any proper response.
“It went off for about 15 minutes and a few people took some punches.
“One tiny WPC got decked by one of the mounted police and a few fans were hit by batons as police tried to disperse the crowd.”
Another Rangers fan, posting on the Follow Follow website, said: “This is the most serious football violence I’ve been caught up in.”
The fan claimed the Aberdeen casuals started throwing “table legs” after they were baton-charged by police, and he was struck by one of the missiles.
Other, unsubstantiated, reports on Follow Follow claimed that people with “London accents” were involved in the disturbance.
Some posters claimed Spurs hooligans had travelled north to link up with the Aberdeen casuals.
A third Rangers fan described the fight as “the biggest, in terms of numbers, I have seen for a while at a game”.
He claimed to have heard men who ran from a nearby pub to get involved shouting “ICF” – a reference to the Inter City Firm gang of Rangers hooligans.
The fan added: “Three police on horses tried to get in between both set of fans and were swinging batons at anyone.”
A police spokeswoman said: “At around 1440 hours, prior to the match, we received reports of a disturbance between rival fans outside Ibrox Underground.
“Officers, including mounted branch, were immediately on the scene and quickly got the situation under control.
“Two men, aged 23 and 42, were arrested and detained in police custody.
“A male officer received a suspected broken hand and a female officer suffered a leg injury.”
The two arrested fans are expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court this morning.

Football hooligans involved in subway violence were fighting to celebrate member's birthday

Season 11/12 - January - Page 3 Ibroxsubwayhooligansima

THE football thugs who caused mayhem outside Ibrox at the weekend were celebrating a “top boy’s” 50th birthday.
Aberdeen casuals had travelled to Glasgow to fight against Rangers hooligans and have a party for one of their founding members.
Many of them were veterans from football violence’s 1980s heyday.
Around 120 seasoned thugs from the Aberdeen Soccer Casuals clashed with Rangers fans and casuals from their Inter City Firm on Saturday.
A source said: “The older Aberdeen boys were there because it was one of their top boys’ 50th birthday.”
A group of 20 Germans – fans of Dynamo Berlin who have a link-up with Aberdeen – were caught up in the 15 minutes of madness.
The violence broke out at Ibrox subway station about 20 minutes before kick-off. About 40 ASC thugs steamed out of the station and into fans heading to the game.
Rival hooligans threw punches and hurled bottles and pieces of wood.
Cops drew batons and used CS spray to try to stop trouble described by one fan as the “worst fighting” he had ever witnessed at football.
Mounted officers were brought in to get the situation under control. But the neds gave cops the slip.
A male officer broke his hand and a female officer suffered a leg injury during the brawl.
It had been rumoured that Tottenham casuals had travelled up for the battle – but a source denied that.
He added: “A large number of Aberdeen boys turned out because it was the guy’s 50th and it coincided with an away game against Rangers.
“He was one of their founding members way back in the early 80s. It was always going to kickoff with a mob like that on the streets of Glasgow.
“The fight with Rangers wasn’t prearranged as there would have been greater numbers of the ICF.”
Formed in 1980, ASC were Scotland’s first casual mob. Shedding the skinhead image, they wore designer gear such as Stone Island, Lacoste, Fila and Ellesse.
On Saturday, the yobs boarded a subway train in the west end of Glasgow to avoid being split up by police monitoring stations in the city centre. About 300 Aberdeen fans had been boozing at The Rock in Hyndland before the game.
Manager Steven Samson said: “It was mayhem but not in a bad way.
“We got a call on the Tuesday from some fans who were bringing a coach, so we made all the necessary arrangements and cordoned off an area for locals.
“There were three coaches of fans and in the end we had to stop people coming in.
“We had stewards, and police were waiting in two vans nearby and kept coming in and out every half-hour to check everything was all right.”
A former Rangers thug blamed a police blunder for the flare-up.
Sandy Chugg – who tried to set up fights during Scotland’s France 98 World Cup adventure – said serious questions would be raised at Strathclyde Police HQ.
Reformed Chugg, 39, said: “Back when casuals were at their height, this type of thing could happen any Saturday but those days are long gone.
“There was always a cat-and-mouse game, trying to give police the slip. Now you can’t move without CCTV tracking every detail.
“Anyone identified as being an organiser will have a file with the cops and they might well have their phone tapped, too.
“Any movements on public transport will be monitored.
“I can’t believe a group of around 50 Aberdeen casuals could be allowed to board a subway train, take it to the busiest station and come out unchallenged.
“Someone will be getting their a*** kicked – it’s a major blunder.”
Yesterday, the chief of the police division covering Ibrox defended their operations on Saturday.
Chief Superintendent Andy Bates said: “Unfortunately, situations such as these can flare up quickly.
“However, officers responded immediately, quickly bringing the situation under control.
“The matter is being investigated by Strathclyde Police and the National Football Coordination Unit.
“If anyone has information regarding the incident, I would ask them to get in touch.”

FOOTBALL thugs teamed up with hooligans from Germany and England for a vicious brawl with rival yobs that left two cops in hospital.
The notorious Aberdeen Soccer Casuals were joined by louts from Tottenham and Dynamo Berlin for the organised battle with Rangers' Inter City Firm.
Police had to send in mounted officers to separate hundreds of fans after the melee erupted just 20 minutes before Aberdeen took on Rangers at Ibrox.
One of the injured PCs suffered a suspected broken hand during the orgy of violence.
Last night one innocent supporter caught up in the violence, said: "It all kicked off when the casuals came out of the subway station at Ibrox.
"They were laying in to people with metal poles and anything they could get their hands on — it was terrifying.
"After the cops arrived they were having a hard time keeping them apart even though they were using the horses.
"They drew their batons at one point to keep the fans away from each other.
"There were about 20 German fans there — they were at the front of the trouble.
"There were also English guys there chanting 'Spurs'."
A source added: "There was intelligence before the game that something was being planned involving Aberdeen casuals and German fans.

Game ... Gers & Dons on Saturday
"The cops were on to it and tried to bring it under control as quickly as possible."
Last night it was understood the gangs had clashed earlier outside a pub in the West End of Glasgow.
And during Saturday's 1-1 draw, visiting Aberdeen fans taunted their Rangers counterparts with a "We 'love' HMRC" banner — in reference to the Ibrox club's £49million battle with the taxman.
The fans' bitter feud exploded in 1988 — when Rangers star Ian Durrant was horrifically injured in a tackle by Neil Simpson that kept him out of football for over two years.
In 2002 trouble flared again when Dons striker Robbie Winters was struck by an object thrown from the crowd. And ref Mike McCurry was forced to take both teams off the pitch as riot cops dealt with a resulting pitch invasion.
That same year the Aberdeen Soccer Casuals forged an alliance with Dynamo Berlin yobs after losing to the German side's bitter rivals Hertha Berlin in the UEFA Cup.
Last night a spokesman for Aberdeen said: "We are investigating the incident."
A Strathclyde Police spokeswoman said two men aged 42 and 23 had been arrested and are set to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court today.
She added: "We're continuing efforts to trace those involved."

Hooligans attack Croatian handball fans near Novi Sad - 24/01/2012

Source : http://www.croatiantimes.com

Some 20 Croatian fans returning from a European Handball Championship game against France in Novi Sad (Serbia) have been victims of a hooligan attack.
Vehicles carrying some 20 Croatians suddenly came under a barrage of stones and bricks as they tried to leave the city. Two were treated at the local hospital for injuries.
The owner of a nearby gas station came to the Croatians' aid, giving all who stopped at his station assistance and a free drink.
Some fear further hooligan attacks, in particular should Croatia meet Serbia in the finals, daily Jutarnji List writes.

Serbia: Court reduces sentences for French fan murderers - 26/01/2012

Source : B92

The Court of Appeals in Belgrade has made a decision to halve sentences to those responsible for French football fan Brice Taton’s murder, B92 has learned.

The court has finished deliberating the verdict in the case of the Frenchman, who was killed on September 17, 2009 and it is expected to publish it on Thursday.

Higher Court in Belgrade Judge Mirjana Ilić sentenced Đorđe Prelić and Dejan Puzigaća, who are still on the run, to 35 and 32 years in prison and Ljubomir Marković and Ivan Grković to 30 years.

Vladan Suvajac, Jovan Karbić, Milan Vujović, Branimir Četnik were sentenced to 14 years and Dragan Tomasović, Stefan Veličković, Milan Tarlać and Bojan Matijević to 12 years in prison.

Stepa Petrović and Dejan Stanković were sentenced to five and four years in prison, respectively, for their involvement in the fight.

Vladimir Bošković, was sentenced to eight months probation for aiding the hooligans after the attack. He was the only one who was not in custody during the trial.

The 28-year-old Frenchman was beaten by the hooligans in downtown Belgrade on September 17, 2009 ahead of the match between FC Partizan and Toulouse. He suffered massive head injuries, injuries to his aorta and had a bleeding in his chest. Taton died from the injuries in the Belgrade Clinical Center on September 29, 2009.

The court determined in the original verdict that the perpetrators committed aggravated murder, bearing in mind that they were aware of their actions and the fact that it was illegal.

Alcatraz fan group leader Prelić, Irriducibili fan group leaders Grković and Marković and Rebels group leader Puzigaća organized the attack on Taton.

According to the initial verdict, they used cell phones to call their accomplices and other football fans to meet in downtown Belgrade. Puzigaća handed them torches, baseball bats and masks before they split into groups and headed toward a bar where the French fans were.

Marković, Grković and Puzigaća continued to coordinate the attack on the Toulouse supporters.

The attackers started hitting the French fans with torches, bats and bottles.

The sentenced men then surrounded Taton and started kicking him while he was on the ground, throwing ashtrays and glasses at him and hitting him with bats and torches.

Then they dragged him and pushed him into a stairway railing before they intentionally threw him into a space between an underground garage and the staircase which was 2.28 meters deep.

The attackers then run away in various directions.

Police arrest suspects in attack on Croatian handball fans - 26/01/2012

In the region of Novi Sad and Belgrade on Jan. 25, police arrested 12 members of sports fans groups, suspected of conducting an organized attack on supporters of the Croatian Handball team in Novi Sad in the evening on Jan. 24.

In the region of Novi Sad and Belgrade on Jan. 25, police arrested 12 members of sports fans groups, suspected of conducting an organized attack on supporters of the Croatian Handball team in Novi Sad in the evening on Jan. 24.

The police found fire arms and cold weapons with several suspects. Police official Mladen Kuribak earlier told BETA that the police were looking for the organizers and that 37 people suspected of being involved in the attacks had been taken in.

At the time of the attack, Croatian supporters were returning home in a convoy of five, six vehicles, after their team's triumph at the European Handball Championship.

The attack, which occurred in a suburb of Novi Sad, "was well organized," according to witnesses. They also said one vehicle had stopped suddenly in front of the convoy of vehicles with the Croatian car plates, which some 50 young men then attacked with stones, bricks and even axes.

The media reported that one Croatian van was set on fire in Ruma, but no one was injured in the incident.

The Croatian Foreign Ministry on Jan. 25 protested the attack to Serbian Ambassador Stanimir Vukicevic, who informed Zagreb about the measures being taken by the Serbian police.

The attack was severely condemned by officials of Vojvodina and Novi Sad, NGOs from the region gathered at the Igman Initiative and the coalition of NGOs Gradjanska Vojvodina (Civic Vojvodina).

Around 5,000 police officers will safeguard the EHF European Handball Championship semifinal game in Belgrade between Serbia and Croatia on Friday evening.

"Several thousand police officers will secure tonight's semifinal games. We have engaged all units which are part of the Interior Ministry Directorate," said Belgrade Police Administration Head Miladin Despotović.

He stressed that in line with security estimates, the police have taken measures to make sure the games go by without incidents which marked recent matches in Novi Sad.

"I want to note we have excellent cooperation with the Prosecutor's Office and misdemeanor courts, and that their representatives have been assigned to tonight's game, so all those who violate the law, and commit either a misdemeanor or criminal offense, will be prosecuted immediately," Despotović said.

He also noted that the Serbian police had excellent cooperation with its Croatian colleagues, and a joint checkpoint has been set up at the Batrovci border crossing.

According to him, Croatian fans who are identified as hooligans will be sent back from the border.

“Although the focus is on fans from Croatia, the police will take care of all fans who come to the Belgrade Arena to support their handball teams,” Despotović added.

Belgrade Police Assistant Chief Nikola Popovac stressed that prevention talks would be held during the day with the leaders of fan groups.

Pupovac said there were no announcements of organized arrival of Croatian fans, which did not mean there would not be individuals who would go to the match.

The semifinal match between Croatia and Serbia will start at 20:15 CET.

Following Tuesday's match between Croatia and France at the 2012 EHF European Men's Handball Championship, Croatian fans were attacked in Novi Sad and Ruma.

A total of 13 persons were arrested on the occasion, while three persons are still at large.

The Serbian police stated they are ready for the upcoming match in Belgrade Arena on Friday.

"No room for hooligans"
Serbian Police Director Milorad Veljović and Acting Croatian Police Director Drazen Vitez called on Serbian and Croatian fans to behave in a sportsmanlike manner at the semi-final match of the European Handball Championship in the Belgrade Arena, and underscored that there is no room for hooligans in Serbia's sports halls.

In a statement for Tanjug, the two police directors agreed that it is in the interest of both Serbia and Croatia, their police services and sports for the match to pass in a peaceful and orderly manner, and they sent a message to participants in the match that there should be no room for politics under the roof of the Belgrade Arena.

Veljović and Vitez also said that both teams' players should feel safe, and expressed expectation that the event would be marked by a high security level and that it would serve as an example of sportsmanlike attitude and good neighborly relations.

Let us be together and cheer, let the best team win, and we will continue to deepen our relations and the two countries' police cooperation, Veljović stated.

Veljović expressed wish for the handball match to pass in a dignified manner, without any political interference and that Croatian fans would feel safe in Belgrade just as they would in Croatia and Zagreb.

Vitez agreed with this point and expressed gratitude for the welcome. He also recalled the great importance of cooperation between the two police services which have so far worked well together in a number of actions.

According to Vitez, Croatia's cooperation with its fans is running smoothly.

The fans listened to our advice, they reported to the police services of both Serbia and Croatia, Vitez said and expressed expectation that they would be escorted to the Arena safely. There are enough police officers, he noted and said he hopes everything will pass smoothly.

I believe sportsmanlike spirit will win, and that the better team would claim victory, Vitez said and added that fans should fight their teams and that hooliganism brings no good to either athletes or the countries they represent.

Merseyside Police arrest ‘racist’ supporter after image of 'monkey' gesture appears on Twitter

Merseyside Police last night arrested a 59-year-old man from north Wales after Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Manchester United was marred by alleged racial abuse

Season 11/12 - January - Page 3 Liver2122705c

The arrest followed widespread outrage after the publication on the internet of a picture which appeared to show a Liverpool fan making a 'monkey’ gesture during yesterday’s FA Cup tie.
The game was the first between United and Liverpool since an FA inquiry found Luis Suárez guilty of racially abusing Patrice Evra, and the Anfield crowd booed the French full-back every time he touched the ball.
A police statement released late last night read: “The man has been taken to a police station, and will be questioned by officers. Merseyside Police would like to thank North Wales police and Liverpool Football Club for their assistance with this matter.”
The police had earlier said the incident was under investigation by specialist 'hate crimes’ detectives.
Liverpool, who will ban any fan found guilty of racial abuse at Anfield, had earlier said they were working closely with police to identify the man in the photograph.

Greece: Police detained 228 football hooligans with extensive weaponry - 22/01/2012

Source : http://www.grreporter.info + http://www.newsbeast.gr

Over 228 fans of Olympiakos and Panathinaikos were arrested minutes before starting an affray this weekend. Like in the film The Football Factory (2004) based on the novel by John King, Greek football fans had organised a fighting match, which the police managed to thwart.

The police took off about 250 of the Olympiakos’ organized fans at the Neratziotissa station at 5:45 pm on Sunday. They were in the city electric train that travels along the route Piraeus-Kifissia. A large amount of Molotov bombs was found as well as light bombs, knives, daggers and small pocket blades, 20 wooden bats and brass knuckle dusters. The red hooligans were on their way to Irini station at the Olympic stadium (one stop after Neratsiotisa) to meet their eternal opponents – the football fans of Panathinaikos. The supporters of the greens, in turn, had gone out from the closed basketball court at OAKA 15 minutes before the end of the match and went to the Irini bus stop, which was the battlefield of the hooligans of both teams.

The police were at the meeting point and did not allow the fans of Olympiakos to get off the electric train. They started a check while the train was running to the next stop. When the doors opened at Neratziotissa stop, the hooligans dispersed leaving behind different weapons in the city train - a kitchen knife, five pocketknives, an iron stick with a sharp point, folding sticks, three light missiles, six naked blades, a belt with an iron knuckle duster, about 10 Molotov cocktails and 3.75 g of raw marijuana.

Police met many of the football hooligans on Andrea Papandreou Street in the Athens’ neighbourhood of Maroussi near The Mall Athens. The arrests were made in this area and the 228 people captured were taken to the central police department in Attica. According to the data, 200 of them were released after being fingerprinted. The department of the Athens police for preventing violence in organized sports has begun an investigation to determine the ownership of the detected objects and to assign personal criminal liability. Officers will process the items found one by one to establish to whom they belong. The reports, which cover felony offences, were made under the supervision of the capital prosecutor in the first instance. Three of those arrested will appear in court today because they have pending sentences.

The weapons and available materials found suggest that clashes would inevitably have lead to severe or fatal consequences. Football hooliganism in Greece has deep roots, but in recent years, the situation has been seriously deteriorating with constant attacks of members and representatives of different football clubs. A week ago, a rival football team placed five kilos of dynamite in the office of the fan club of Panathinaikos in the metropolitan district of Peristeri. There were no victims, but besides the demolition of the football club, the buildings in the area suffered significant damage.
