Australia: Football fans must actively work toward acceptance - 01/01/2012

Source : http://www.theroar.com.au

Before I begin, some context. I’m an active Perth Glory supporter in The Shed, I have a strong interest in English football – even below the Premier League – and I’m fascinated by supporter culture. Far from prudish, I’m aware that football fans in this country and globally support their teams in different ways to those of other sports.
Yet too often, football supporters in Australia are slated by the mainstream media. This is not news to anybody, but when words like ‘hooligans’, ‘riots’ and the dreaded f-word ‘flares’ occupy headlines in our major newspapers, it is easy to feel we as supporters are fighting a losing battle. A recent article in the Newcastle Herald highlights the tendency of our media to take a cheap shot.
By and large, the sensationalist media do not support the growth of football, and supporters have an ‘us against them’ mentality as a result. But would things not be better if we had the media on our side?
Our supporter culture is one which involves considerable noise, some colourful language, and both travelling to and watching matches in groups. Like it or not, it is foreign to supporters of other Australian sports. Regardless of actual eviction numbers and incidents at football compared to other sports, we will always be perceived more negatively.
For as long as we are perceived this way, there will be elements of Australian society that do not accept football. If we want to become the number one sport in this country, we need to get as many people onside (pardon the pun) as possible.
We need them to embrace the game, and this means creating an environment where we will give the media no reason to print negative headlines. This does not mean abandoning what makes football support great. But the few seconds of enjoyment a fan gets from lighting a flare can lead to sanctions for both them and the FFA, and deliver another blow to football’s reputation.
Personally, my experiences of supporting Glory involve ‘marching’ from the pub to the stadium in a group. We chant as we travel the streets to the match, and some language is generally involved. We are conscious that there is no hint of threatening behaviour from us to any passing persons and the most common reaction to us marching is one of bewilderment.
But conversely, it only takes one person to ruin this in their desire to impress their mates. One foul insult directed at a passer-by, one intoxicated attempt to damage some property, and as we know, negative press spreads quickly and our reputation is tarnished. As a collective, we walk a perilous line, and we must be conscious of how we are perceived.
I am not a Celtic supporter, and am aware the Old Firm derby has an underbelly of sectarianism. But I point to a moment from the recent Celtic v Rangers match as an example of how, if done in the right way, active football support can provide a surreal experience enjoyed by every single patron, and unrivalled by anything else.
Watch the video below. You’ll see an entire stadium chanting and jumping without offensive language, flares or violence, and you’ll see it can be breathtaking. I challenge any football fan (supporters of Celtic’s rivals aside) to honestly say they wouldn’t wish to be part of that.
Enjoyable active football support does not need to be conducted in ways that will lead to negative headlines, and by working towards achieving this will we grow the game in Australia. And what does growing the game mean? It means larger supporter bases, so the atmosphere is only ever going to get better.

Liverpool FC - Oldham Athletic - FA Cup - 06/01/2012

Source : http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/liverpool/9000190/Fan-arrested-as-Liverpool-probe-racist-abuse-of-Oldhams-Tom-Adeyemi.html

Fan arrested as Liverpool probe racist abuse of Oldham's Tom Adeyemi

Merseyside Police have arrested a 20-year-old man from Aintree over the alleged racial abuse of Oldham’s Tom Adeyemi at Anfield.

A police statement said the man had been arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence at Friday night’s game, which Liverpool won 5-1.
The man, from Aintree, is being questioned by officers who are investigating the incident which took place in the second half of the match at Anfield last night.
Liverpool intend to impose a lifetime ban from Anfield on any supporter found guilty of racially abusing Adeyemi, who told police he was racially abused by a supporter on the Kop in the 80th minute of the game, which Liverpool won 5-1.
A witness told police he had heard a single voice shout 'You f------ black b------’.
Before Saturday night’s arrest Liverpool, who are under intense scrutiny following widespread criticism of their stance during over Luis Suárez’s abuse of Patrice Evra, had issued a statement calling on other witnesses to come forward.

The statement said: “We are working closely with the police to establish all the facts. We take this matter extremely seriously and have provided the police with the evidence we have available to us.
"This includes CCTV coverage and still photography of the relevant part of the stadium, statements from match-day stewards in that area and full access to all the footage captured by the cameras filming the match for our in-house TV operation.
“We have examined records of tickets purchased in that part of the ground to see if they provide any additional information.
“We urge any of our supporters who witnessed this incident or saw the individual involved and who have not already done so, to contact either the club or the police.”
Adeyemi was reduced to tears by what he heard and Oldham captain Dean Furman branded the insults “a disgrace”.
He said: “He was abused and I’ll leave it to Tom and the police to investigate that. What happened should not happen and is an absolute disgrace. I hope the authorities take heavy action.”
Rueben Hazell, the former Oldham captain who was among the club’s fans at Anfield, gave his version of events via Twitter. Hazell, who now plays for Shrewsbury, wrote: “I thought straight away this might be racial for Tom to react to a fan in this way.
"A lot of the Latics fans started singing to the Liverpool fans 'You’re all just a bunch of racists’ so obviously they where thinking the same as me. After the game I went into the dressing room and spoke to Tom directly.
"He said he was racially abused by the fan. The police wanted to speak to him and everyone around him told him to do so.
“It’s time for this kind of behaviour to stop. This isn’t acceptable in football or in society and it’s time for black players to show a stand like young Tom did.
''For a 20 year-old I thought he managed the situation extremely well and it was sad that the incident reduced him to tears on what should have been his happiest day.”
Piara Powar, executive director of European football’s anti-discrimination body, Fare, warned the reputation of Liverpool and English football in general had suffered from recent events.
Writing on Twitter, he said: “The LFC brand is being tarnished, but so is British football. Are LFC fans going to do this at every game, support the mistakes made by their own man [Suárez] by abusing others? Where are football’s leaders on this issue today?”
The Football Association will study the referee’s report tomorrow but is likely to delay any action until after the police investigation.
Meanwhile, in a separate development, a man has been arrested over racial abuse sent on Twitter to former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore.
Adeyemi gave up Cambridge place
The 20 year-old reduced to tears by a fan on the Kop turned down a place at Cambridge University to pursue his football career.
Tom Adeyemi, who is from Norwich, got two A*s (chemistry and biology) and an A (maths) in his A-levels. He decided to focus on football with his parent club Norwich and has had loan spells at Bradford and now Oldham.
Former Norwich manager Glenn Roeder said of Adeyemi: “He is one of the nicest young men that I’ve ever dealt with.”

Brawl at German indoor event ends with arrests - 07/01/2012

Source : http://www.al.com

Organizers say they have abandoned an indoor soccer tournament in Germany after the opening day finished with a mass brawl that had to be broken up by police using tear gas.

German media reported that Hamburg police made 72 arrests and that 49 people were injured, including 11 officers, after violence broke out Friday night following a 3-3 draw between second-division St. Pauli and regional league team VfB Luebeck in the Schweinske Cup.

Organizers announced on the tournament website they were scrapping the second day of the event on Saturday, saying they were "shocked and feel for all the innocent guests at our event who were injured."

Source : http://focus-fen.net/?id=n268339

Sofia police arrested 14 football hooligans, including a 31-year-old woman, the press office of the Interior Ministry announced.
The football fans were arrested this morning in the frames of a special police operation and will be trailed under the Act on Protection of Public Order upon Conduct of Sports Events.
The investigation took a month and a half. Police officers were working on the identification and location of football hooligans, who were arrested thanks to photos, video materials and witnesses’ testimony.
A 31-year-old woman is among the arrested. She is known to the police for previous offences.

Bulgarian police arrest 14 over violence

Bulgarian police arrested 14 soccer fans on Tuesday in connection with crowd violence at two domestic league matches before the winter mid-season break.
Detectives had spent recent weeks examining evidence, including pictures and video footage of the trouble, police said in a statement.
Twelve fans, including a 31-year-old woman, were arrested for violent disorder during CSKA Sofia's 1-0 win over bitter city rivals Levski on Oct. 28.
The "eternal derbies", as matches between the two most popular clubs in the Balkan country are known, have a history of crowd trouble with police unveiling strict security measures ahead of every game in recent years.
Two men were detained for using fireworks and pelting players with broken seats during CSKA's 2-2 draw against surprise leaders Ludogorets in the last game before the winter break on Nov. 28.
Sofia police said further arrests were planned.

Investigation into flares and smoke bombs set off by Rangers fans during cup tie

Season 11/12 - January Icff

An investigation has been launched after flares and smoke bombs were set off by Rangers fans during a cup tie.

On two occasions during the game against Arbroath on Sunday pyrotechnics were set off in the Rangers end.

Tayside Police confirmed they are investigating the incident at Gayfield Park.

Flares and smoke bombs were set off before the game began at 12.45pm, while further pyrotechnics were lit shortly before half time.

A force spokeswoman said enquiries are being made into the incident, with a "review of CCTV" from the game being carried out.

Rangers won against Arbroath 4-0 in the fourth round Scottish Cup game at the weekend.

The investigation into the incident comes after Uefa opened disciplinary proceedings against Celtic over flares that were set off by their travelling fans in the Europa League tie against Udinese last month.

Egypt's Ultra football fans found new political party - 05/01/2012

Source : http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-16435132

Football fans, known as the Ultras, are the latest arrivals to Egypt's post-revolution political scene.

Last week, they founded a political party that joins different Ultras groups with one goal: to help in shaping their country's future.

Since the January 2010 uprising, Ultras groups have spearheaded the protests against military rule, and have been blamed for clashes with the security forces, though the Ultras utterly deny such accusations.

BBC Arabic's Dina Demrdash reports.

Germany: Football hooligans 'getting more violent' - 11/01/2011

Source : thelocal.de

Violence at football matches in Germany’s top leagues has reached record highs, leaving police struggling to control it, the Interior Ministry said this week.

The 846 people injured in hooliganism incidents during the 2010-2011 season in Germany’s top two football divisions was largest number ever, the ministry said in an answer to a parliamentary question.

Police forces were facing increased aggression from members of so-called “ultra” fan groups which are often blamed for starting fights and riots.

“Violent riots have for years been at a high level, but a long-term increase in more violent activity can be observed,” the ministry said.

Over the past 12 seasons, 1,165 police officers and 4,044 unruly fans or innocent bystanders have been hurt during football matches, while 41,335 people have been arrested, the ministry reported.

Hooliganism is a constant problem in German football with authorities and football associations repeatedly failing to put a damper on it.

Last weekend Hamburg police cancelled an indoor tournament after admitting they could not prevent violent clashes between fans.

And in November, officials took the drastic step of banning second division team Dynamo Dresden from next season’s German Cup because of fan rioting following a defeat.

The troubles are not limited to the country’s top divisions – in September, security officials said safety was particular poor in third, fourth and fifth divisions and security had been neglected in the lower leagues.

Manchester City - Manchester United - FA Cup - 08/01/2011

Source : manchestereveningnews

Greater Manchester Police said supporters were largely well behaved with only 18 fans arrested before and after the game.

Apart from a few scuffles on Grey Mare Lane after the final whistle as 5,700 United fans made their home, police say they did not have to deal with any major incidents or injuries.

“The operation was really successful and the vast majority of fans were well-behaved,” said the spokesman.

It was the first time GMP had asked all officers on duty for the derby to wear protective riot gear.

The decision was made after one officer was left partially-sighted when he was struck by a missile at the April 2010 derby match.

Danish fan fined $320,300 for hitting referee - 10/01/2012

Source : Reuters

A Danish soccer fan has been ordered to pay 1.87 million Danish crowns ($320,300) in damages for attacking a referee during Denmark's Euro 2008 qualifier against Sweden in June 2007.

The 33-year-old man must pay the sum to the Danish Football Association (DBU), the High Court in Copenhagen ruled on Tuesday.

The fan had appealed against a 2009 decision by the Copenhagen City Court which had ordered him to pay the DBU 900,000 crowns, but the High Court doubled the amount.

"The person in question's acts represent the biggest attack on Danish football's integrity," Jim Stjerne Hansen, secretary-general of the DBU, said in a statement.

"His violent assault on the referee cost us an almost spotless reputation within the soccer world and 2.2 million crowns," Hansen said.

The match on June 2, 2007, at the Parken stadium in Copenhagen was abandoned in the final minutes when the fan rushed on to the field and tried to hit German referee Herbert Fandel who had just sent off Denmark's Christian Poulsen and awarded the guests a penalty with the score at 3-3.

UEFA later awarded Sweden a 3-0 victory, and the loss to Sweden meant that Denmark failed to qualify for Euro 2008.

The DBU had sought 2.2 million crowns in damages after it was fined by UEFA and Denmark were banned from playing their next two qualifiers at Parken.

The court's award was lower than the DBU's claim because the court deemed the number of spectators who would have attended a match against Lichtenstein to be lower than the DBU's estimate.

The DBU said it was willing to discuss reducing the fine with the fan, whose name has not been released by officials. He has said he would be bankrupt if he had to pay.

Danish soccer fans have created groups on social network Facebook to raise funds to help the fan pay the damages. Poulsen has also said he would be willing to contribute financially 'as it was basically my fault'.

In 2007, the fan was convicted of attempted assault and trespassing and given a suspended 30-day jail sentence, which was reduced to 20 days on appeal. The fan admitted he was drunk and entered the pitch illegally, but rejected the violence charge.

Greek Border Police 'Had to' Gas Bulgarian Hooligans - 14/01/2012

Source : http://www.novinite.com/view_news.php?id=135713

Greek border police had to use force against Bulgarian volleyball fans in an incident earlier this week, said the Greek embassy in Sofia in a statement over the matter.

Thursday the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a protest, after Wednesday evening Greek security forces clashed with supporters of Bulgarian CSKA volleyball team, who had travelled to Thessaloniki to see a game with local Iraklis.

According to the Greek embassy's statement, Iraklis had not allowed Bulgarian fans to be present in its facility for the game, which resulted in two of the three CSKA fan buses not being allowed entry into Thessaloniki.

In its letter, the Bulgarian Foreign Affairs Ministry had objected to the obstruction that Greece had made to the Bulgarian citizens' freedom of movement.

According to the statement of the Greek embassy, which had consulted with Greek border police, CSKA fans attacked Greek border security guards upon arriving at the Promachonas checkpoint.

"During passport check, some of the Bulgarian fans got off the buses and started throwing stones, smoke bombs and other objects at Greek border police officers," reads the embassy's statement.

The Greek position explains that in that turn of events "the use of teargas was absolutely necessary" to restore order and the movement of vehicles through the Promachonas-Kulata checkpoint.

The Greek embassy further reports that the police unit in Promachonas is carrying out investigations of the incident and has already filed charges of assault, damaging of property and violations of the legislation on use of pyrotechnic devices.

Man arrested after 'racist tweets' - 16/01/2012

British police have made an arrest following allegations of racist tweets directed at two Rangers players.

A 41-year-old man is being held in custody after complaints that Rangers defender Kyle Bartley and teammate Maurice Edu had been abused on Twitter.

Bartley, on loan at the Scottish champions from Arsenal, wrote on his page: "Disappointing that in 2012 things like this are still happening. Hopefully the police will take action. Thank you all for the support."

Edu tweeted: "Sad day when that's what people are tweeting."

Argentina: Link that sustains soccer hooligans - 16/01/2012

Source : http://www.buenosairesherald.com/article/89159/link-that-sustains-soccer-hooligans

The link between soccer hooligans, club officials, police, courts and government officials has been talked about a lot, in some cases it has been proved, but never broken. The fact that so few soccer hooligans go to prison is a case in point.
Last year’s most notorious trial was for the murder of River Plate hooligan Gonzalo Acro by other gang member(s) over the share of their lucrative earnings. The murder actually happened in 2007, but perhaps three years for a verdict to be reached is top speed for Argentine justice. But what happened? Gang member Ariel Luna said he was offered 600,000 pesos — let’s not say by whom — to take the blame and returned from hiding in Italy, but never collected. He finished up with a prison life sentence. So did higher class Alan and William Schlenker, the gang leaders accused as instigators of the crime, but they are free until an appeal is heard “sometime in 2012”. As a lot of the case against them is based on circumstantial evidence, it does not look as if they will end up in prison.
Government official Aníbal Fernández said at the time that it was crazy to link the River Plate Club with this affair, so José María Aguilar, club president at the time, once again got off the hook. But would Fernández say the same about last year’s death threats received by referee Sergio Pezzotta during half-time of River Plate’s relegation playoff match with Belgrano of Córdoba in which they were relegated?
The police had disappeared from the zone of the referee’s room, the hooligans who went to threaten him were shown on a video screen and identified, the referee also identified them and one of the gang told reporters that River Plate officials had sent them.
Six months later, the investigating court has still not reached a verdict. Are they going to say it is for lack of evidence as one court has already declared?
River Plate officials and identified hooligans refused to answer questions in court — a local rule which, however, implicates those keeping silent right away... and the club has not stopped the implicated hooligans from entering the club.
Current River Plate president Daniel Passarella has done a lot for the club in putting its finances in order, but he is also one of the accused in the case. He never did anything to get rid of the hooligans which continue to harm the club.
Almost five years ago, River Plate hooligan fans fought inside the club in what was known as the batalla de los quinchos. There were several injured and some of the hooligans were taken to court. The case was bandied about between several judges and was closed not long ago. No judge really wanted to handle it.
Former River Plate president Aguilar is being investigated for fraudulent administration — proved by an audit of the club’s books after Passarella took over — and well known links with hooligans. The “investigation” never ends and Aguilar has already squirmed out of several court cases.
One hooligan who did go to prison was Boca Juniors gang leader Rafael Di Zeo, but he is now out and trying to recuperate his leadership. During his forced absence another gang was formed under another leader (Mauro Martín), so now the club has two gangs fighting each other. The courts have taken a hand, but so far have only stopped the two leaders from going to matches for the moment. Also being investigated is the club’s committee and police for supporting the gangs of which there are witnesses. It is a never ending process.
Di Zeo has several court cases against him, but has close connections with politicians and never seems to be proved guilty.
Over 4 1/2 years ago, a Tigre fan (not a hooligan) was killed by stones thrown by Nueva Chicago hooligans after their promotion-relegation match which returned Tigre to the top division. There must have been witnesses, but the court has no suspects, nobody indicted and nobody being investigated in 4 1/2 years. The key lies with the Nueva Chicago hooligan gang which should have been investigated at the time, but lack of action in 4 1/2 years has annulled the case.
Almost two years ago, Walter Cáceres was killed in the ongoing battle between Newell’s Old Boys gangs. Five hooligans were found responsible for the fight which also produced injuries. The prosecutor requested 18 years prison. Last week, the court absolved them.
Ten years ago, Racing hooligans attacked Independiente hooligans before a derby clash between the teams in which Independiente member Gustavo Rivero was killed. Only in June, 2010 — over eight years later — did the courts decide that 23 Racing hooligans will be tried. One wonders what the courts did in the intervening eight years and what has happened in the 19 months since?
In June 2009, two Huracán men were killed in fighting among members of the club’s hooligan gang. The court indicted five men. As far as can be found out, that was the end of that.
Following an investigation in October 2008, a police chief and another officer went on trial for the first time because of business deals with the Boca Juniors hooligans. That was over three years ago. There is no news of a police chief in prison for dealing with soccer hooligans.
These are only a few examples that come to mind of unfinished trials. But there have been cases of fast justice. Some time back, in Córdoba a man went to prison for robbing a loaf of bread. He was hungry and had no money. Last year, a man stole some cheese at a supermarket for the same reasons and was taken to a court for an oral trial (with three judges in attendance). The trouble was that neither of the two men were members of soccer hooligan gangs and therefore lacked protection.
