Two fans shot in fighting before Brazil derby
Two supporters of Brazil club Palmeiras suffered gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital on Sunday in fighting between fans and police that marred the team's 2-1 victory over Corinthians in a Sao Paulo derby. "Two fans of a supporters' organisation who came from the city of Sao Paulo were shot," an officer of the Sao Paulo state police said after the incident in the city of Prudente where the match was played at a neutral ground. "We still don't know who did the shooting, but we have information there were armed Palmeiras fans and we're still gathering information," he told the Sportv channel. Police had to fire rubber bullets to keep the situation from escalating.

Rubber bullets used after hooligans set fire to field, bash toilets
Servette’s victory was marred, however, by hooligans, who were kept in check, but with difficulty, by 180 police officers monitoring the Sion event, including 30 from Geneva.
Police initially intercepted buses with supporters from Geneva heading for Sion and checked them before escorting them directly to the Tourbillon stadium in Sion, to avoid confrontations between groups of supporters.
Servette supporters then broke through the security system to avoid checks at the entrance and once inside caused considerable damage, breaking doors and WCs. A young woman was hospitalized after being seriously cut in the hand.
Police remained on alert during the match, given that 20 or so supporters who have been banned from Swiss stadiums were spotted in the area. Once the match was over “clans” from the two groups of supporters, which had “copiously insulted each other” during the match, say police, tried to clash, with Sion fans rushing the other groups, but police kept them apart, using rubber bullets and pepper sprays.
Two police officers were checked at the hospital after being hit by rocks. Four FC Sion supporters were arrested, ages 33, 30, 28 and 19.
Police check Servette supporters' buses en route to Sion for football match.

Berwick Rangers fans hit out at police and match stewards after being told to take down flag of St George at away games
FANS of the only English side to play in the Scottish Football League claim they are being banned from flying the St George's cross north of the border. Supporters of Berwick Rangers say over-zealous police and stewards are stopping them from waving their national colours at away matches in case it provokes Scottish crowds. Die-hard fans of the club, nicknamed the Wee Rangers, are furious at the unofficial crackdown. Writer Tom Maxwell, who has published an account of the club's history, branded the move "ludicrous". He said: "There have been occasions where Berwick fans have been told to take the St George's Cross down at away grounds on the basis that it might incite trouble. "It seems particularly ridiculous when no Scottish fans get told to take down the Saltire when they come to Berwick. "I doubt that Cardiff, Swansea or Wrexham fans get told to take down Welsh flags at English grounds. It is ludicrous." Supporter Martin McCleary, who has only missed three Berwick matches in six seasons, claimed overzealous police and stewards intervened all the time. He said: "We are always being asked to take down the England flag. It's not like we are displaying a swastika." Fans of the club, based less than three miles south of the border, have vowed to continue taking flags with three lions and the cross of St George to away fixtures. Another supporter, Nick Vagg, from Glasgow, believes fellow fans should have the right to show their affiliation with England. The Scotland supporter and SNP voter, who wears a kilt in the black and gold club colours to matches, said: "When we point out the home support have a Scottish flag, the police or stewards just say, 'Aye, but they're a Scottish team.' "When we say, 'Yeah, but we're an English team,' they respond, 'Aye, but you're in the Scottish league so you're causing trouble'. It smacks of double standards." The club has fans from both sides of the border. A Berwick Rangers spokesman said: "We do not allow flags which could be seen as sectarian or abusive, but we have no problem at all with the national flags of both England and Scotland." Stranraer FC, who compete with Berwick Rangers in the Scottish Third Division, said tensions between both sets of fans had led to England flags being taken down. Strathclyde Police, who police Berwick's away games with Clyde and Queen's Park, said it advised its officers to remove any flags they deem to be "provocative".

British Cops to Guard Bulgaria-England Clash in Sofia - 31/08/2011
Source : Novinite.com
Bulgarian police officers will be assisted by their British counterparts at the Euro 2012 qualifier between England and Bulgaria on Friday, it has been announced.
"We have established joint measures to prevent hooliganism on the margins of the Bulgaria-England match" on Friday, Biser Ivanov, head of the police unit dealing with football hooligans, has told the Bulgarian National Radio, as cited by The Times.
Even though the British police officers will not have powers to arrest offenders themselves, they are expected to cooperate. A total of 12 "spotters," tasked with pinpointing known hooligans in a crowd, will travel to Bulgaria for Friday's game.
Some 3000 British fans are expected to attend the clash, which is to take place at Sofia's Vasil Levski stadium.
It was recently announced that Bulgaria's popular southern Black Sea resort of Sunny Beach demands British police officers to patrol it during the next tourist season. The British police officers' presence would create some respect in the British tourists who often create trouble, the chair of the Sunny Beach hotel owners' union explained.

UK: Tales of terrace warfare told in hooligans book - 29/08/2011
Source : The Bolton News
THE violent world of Bolton’s football hooligans has been exposed in a controversial new book.
Walking Down The Manny Road tells the story of Bolton’s various “firms” or gangs, uniting under the name of The Cuckoo Boys, and their clashes with rival groups attached to other football clubs.
It also describes the hooligans’ links with the English Defence League and their presence at EDL rallies, including the protest in Bolton town centre in March last year.
The book is written by Doug Mitchell, who claims to have been a member of The Cuckoo Boys for 30 years.
He describes how mobs such as the Tonge Moor Stanley Boys, The Horwich Casuals, The Halliwell Cutters Crew and the Billy Whizz Fan Club united under The Cuckoo Boys banner.
A story in The Bolton Evening News, from May 19, 1990, is quoted in the opening pages, describing the hooligans as “Thugs who peddle terror in the name of Bolton Wanderers”.
Mr Mitchell moved to Bolton from Edinburgh when he was eight, and grew up in Farnworth.
He first found a taste for “recreational violence”, he says, when he took part in organised fights between schools — as a pupil at George Tomlinson’s he says he regularly fought with groups from St James’s and Harper Green.
The book charts hooliganism from several decades ago, right up to the present day While the book defends the EDL, claiming it is not a racist organisation, it also describes some of the hooligans who support the organisation as openly racist.
A spokesman for Bolton Wanderers said he had not heard of the book.
Bolton Wanderers Supporters Association secretary Christopher Peacock said: “Hooligan is a prehistoric and outdated phenomenon and anything that glorifies it should be considered with the same disdain as hooliganism itself.”
