Polish fans avoid hooligan ban, if they behave - 27/07/2011
Source : AFP
Poland's premier league said Tuesday it would not extend a blanket away-fan ban imposed in the dying days of last season, but that supporters are on notice to behave, amid pressure to beat hooliganism before Euro 2012. In a statement, the Ekstraklasa said the decision came at crunch talks in Warsaw on Tuesday between its board and heads of its 16 clubs, after meetings that also involved fan organisations. The Ekstraklasa kicks off on Friday. "Organised groups of away fans will be allowed to attend matches in the T-Mobile Ekstraklasa, provided each official fan club signs up an agreement between the fan clubs and the Ekstraklasa," the statement said. "Under that agreement, the fans clubs have pledged to observe the law at T-Mobile Ekstraklasa matches, both on the way to the stadium and inside," it added. "Violation of the pledge will result in sanctions being imposed by the Ekstraklasa's legal arm, including possible away-fan bans for the team concerned for the rest of the 2011-12 season," it said. If any fan clubs refuse to sign up, home sides will have the automatic right to bar them from away games. The Ekstraklasa decision echoes that on July 14 by the governing body of the second division, which kicked off last Friday. At the end of June, police asked Poland's PZPN football association to prolong a sweeping ban imposed in May into the new season. The PZPN passed the decision to league authorities, who said barring fans ran against the spirit of the game but nonetheless pledged to act. Poland is striving to stamp out hooliganism before the 2012 European Championship, which the country will host with neighbouring Ukraine. The authorities say there are up to 5,000 hardcore hooligans in this nation of 38 million, in a gang culture which has arisen since the communist regime crumbled in 1989 and apes England's once-notorious "firms". Police and the PZPN got tough following crowd violence at the May 3 cup final between Legia and Lech Poznan. The authorities imposed empty-stadium orders at Legia, Lech and a handful of other violence-hit clubs. At the police's behest, the PZPN on May 12 also banned away fans from all four remaining top-flight fixtures. The decision also affected the six final fixtures in the second division, where play ended on June 12. Other mooted measures include a fan identity card system -- controversial elsewhere, notably in Britain where plans were dropped. In addition, the government plans to bolster electronic tagging for fans who have been served with stadium bans by the courts -- around 1,800 people -- and also wants clubs to toughen up the implementation of their own bans.

EDL founder guilty of leading football yobs in violent face-off with rival fans - 26/07/2011
Source : http://www.mirror.co.uk
The founder of the English Defence League was found guilty yesterday of leading a street brawl involving 100 football fans.
Dad-of-three Stephen Lennon, 28, shouted “EDL till I die” and encouraged fans to confront rivals.
Bottles, stones and a car roof rack were hurled in the fighting, just before the Luton and Newport game, magistrates heard.
Lennon, of Luton, Beds, had denied using threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour. He was given a 12-month community rehabilitation order, 150 hours of unpaid work and a three-year football banning order.
PC Robert Field described the scene as “incredibly intimidating”, adding: “Lennon was a prominent person, giving a ‘come on, then’ gesture.”
Lennon said: “I am being done for what I am saying rather than what I am doing. It is a police state.”
