Brazil: Ponte Preta - Guarani - 16/07/2011
Source : Washingtonpost.com + youtube.com
A massive riot broke out in the stands during a Brazilian club soccer match last weekend, casting doubts on Brazil’s ability to control hooliganism as it gears up to host the 2014 World Cup.
Cross-town rivals Guarani and Ponte Preta have been bitter rivals for decades, but their annual Serie B clash — known as the Campinas Derby — spiraled out of control last Saturday when visiting fans revolted, inciting violence from police on the scene. Fires burned, rubber bullets flew and in the aftermath, both teams may face stiff fines and league sanctions.
What sparked the scene above in the Sao Paolo suburb of Campinas? Apparently, at halftime with the home side of Ponte Preta leading 1-0, the public address announcer encouraged the home fans to keep cheering because their team was winning, while the Guarani supporters in the stands should (roughly translated): “act like a chicken and put up an egg.” The ribbing refers to a joke in which the Pontepretano call the Guarani fans “scary chickens,” but that didn’t sit well with the visiting side, which became enraged — especially since the match was being televised live — and demanded that stadium police arrest the announcer.
The confrontations between fans and police became increasingly physical and soon the Guarani supporters were breaking and burning anything they could find in the stadium. After the match was over and Ponte Preta had earned a 2-0 victory (yes, for whatever reason, they did not abandon the match), the rioting spilled into the streets. The police retaliated with more violence.
According to a report from the Portuguese Web site Paulinia News, official figures showed 12 policemen and 15 fans were injured in the fray. In addition to costs for material damages, Ponte Preta and Guarani may be fined up to $100,000 each and could forfeit multiple league matches.
A 14-year-old rising freshman at Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda, Md., was one of those injured in the fray, suffering bruises on his arm and leg.
The boy’s father, Wilson Matos, said the experience alerted him that his native country may not be prepared to host the sport’s biggest spectacle in the summer of 2014.

Newcastle fans handed away game ban - 21/07/2011
Source : Thenorthernecho.co.uk
FOOTBALL fans reacted angrily last night after Newcastle United effectively banned non-season ticket holders from away games following ugly scenes at a pre-season friendly with Darlington.
The club said non-season ticket holders and non-members would not be able to buy tickets for away games.
The policy has been implemented with immediate effect following the “shameful and unsavoury” incidents that marred last Friday’s friendly game at The Northern Echo Arena in Darlington.
The Magpies also said the club will work with police to identify those responsible for the trouble and vowed to take further action against any fan involved.
The Quakers are also helping police with the investigation and will follow Newcastle’s lead in taking action against any guilty fans.
However, Newcastle’s new ticketing policy was criticised by fans for pricing them out of football and punishing innocent supporters.
The tough response follows trouble at Darlington, when hundreds of fans ran on to the pitch after Sammy Ameobi scored a second goal and fights broke out. The game was delayed for ten minutes while both managers pleaded with fans to return to the stands.
Afterwards three fans – two men aged 21 and 22 from the Newcastle area, and a 17-yearold youth from Darlington – were arrested and charged with pitch invasion and public order offences.
Newcastle manager Alan Pardew and managing director Derek Llambias promised the club would take “the strongest possible action”.
A club spokesman said yesterday they would not tolerate criminal or anti-social behaviour at home or away fixtures.
They would seek to give guilty fans a club banning order and were acting on information provided by fans to help identify offenders in Darlington.
He added: “In order to combat any possible trouble at future away fixtures, a new policy will be implemented by the club which will see ticket sales restricted to season ticket holders and members only.
As such, the buyer will be held accountable for any trouble associated with the purchase or use of a ticket.
“Newcastle United sincerely hopes that this incident is a one-off never to be repeated again and that as the 2011-12 season unfolds, the good name, fervour and loyalty of its fans will once again be to the fore, up and down the country.”
Previously, tickets went on sale to season ticket holders and members, before any unsold tickets went to other supporters.
Steve Wraith, editor of Newcastle fanzine Toon Talk, said: “This regime at the club needs to start communicating with supporters before they make these decisions. The fans have no representation and they need a voice.
“I think the decision is a complete over-reaction. What happened at Darlington was over-exuberance, youths getting excited.”
A spokesman for Darlington FC said the club was working with its counterparts at Durham Police and had handed them DVD evidence.
The Quakers have also provided the FA with a dossier of evidence.
Tony Taylor, of the Darlington FC Supporters Trust, said he supported action to ban offending fans, but described Newcastle’s membership scheme as “opportunism”.
He said: “It seems to be an opportunity to make it more expensive for football fans, who will follow their clubs whatever.”
No further action has been planned for the forthcoming friendlies against Middlesbrough and Sunderland, although the club will maintain its planning with police.

Dundee United - Śląsk Wroclaw - 21/07/2011
Source : BBC News
Poles arrested after Dundee United Europa match
Four Polish men were arrested in Dundee as travelling football fans caused trouble in the city, police have said.
Dundee United's progress in the Europa league ended after the second leg tie resulted in an away goals defeat to Slask Wroclaw.
Police said about 2,000 supporters had travelled from Poland for the match.
Extra officers were drafted in after bottles and missiles were thrown by "drunken" away fans before the match.
Although there was some damage to property around the ground at Tannadice, no-one was hurt.
Ch Insp Graeme Donald praised Dundee United supporters for remaining calm.
He said there was "drunkenness and disorder" from the Polish fans throughout the day before the match.
Ch Insp Donald said: "There were missiles being thrown, there were bottles being thrown. Police were very quick to attend, in numbers.
"With a show of force, the fans saw better and moved off.
"I think it is safe to say that we did prevent some significant disorder, which was a distinct possibility."
Ch Insp Donald added: "After the match there was large numbers of fans, in their hundreds, running through the local streets around the football ground and eventually a number of these people made their way into the city centre as well."
United won the game 3-2 on the night but were knocked out on away goals by the Polish side.
More than 11,000 fans attended the match.
***********************************
In an electric atmosphere, several fans invaded the pitch to celebrate with the home players and had to be dealt with by stewards.

Fenerbahçe - Shakhtar Donetsk - Friendly - 21/07/2011
Source : Sundayszaman.com
Fan violence, pitch invasion even before season kicks off
The Fenerbahçe-Shakhtar Donetsk warm-up match at the Fenerbahçe Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium in Kadıköy on Thursday night was aimed at preparing both teams for their upcoming domestic and UEFA Champion League campaigns.
But that was far from being the case as fan violence and pitch invasion forced the abandonment of what was supposed to be a “friendly.”
Tension was already sky-high before the game. Fenerbahçe fans, who blame the sports media and not their implicated officials in the ongoing match-rigging scandal, hoisted a huge poster of Chairman Aziz Yıldırım -- who is currently at Metris Prison pending formal charges -- in the press section of the stadium.
Then the boisterous fans further vented their anger on the sports journalists, by swearing at and cursing them and also manhandling a few who came their way. Fenerbahçe Deputy Chairman Ali Koç tried in vain to pacify the madding crowd, but in the end urged the besieged newsmen to flee for their lives.
Things fall apart
Trouble actually started in the 58th minute, when two Fener fans, wearing T-shirts bearing the image of Yıldırım, invaded the pitch. The duo was forced off the pitch, but not before play had been stopped for several minutes.
The climax was in the 67th, when more fans stormed the pitch. And as the Fener club and security officials rushed onto the pitch in a desperate bid to restore order, the scene resembled an evening at Taksim Square more than a football pitch. Koç’s efforts to soothe the fans failed and TV cameramen trying to cover the event were targeted. The referee had no alternative other than to call off the match.
Think for a moment: Shakhtar is coached by the legendary Mircea Lucescu, who coached Galatasaray in 2000-02 and Beşiktaş in 2002-04, leading both teams to numerous honors.
Moreover, Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium is a memorable place for Lucescu because it is where Shakhtar won the last UEFA Cup in 2009, beating Germany’s Werder Bremen in the final. Thereafter, the competition was renamed the Europa League. Without a doubt, that was why the Romanian accepted the invitation to play at Şükrü Saracoğlu on Thursday. And after what happened, the silver-haired Romanian must have been asking, “What on earth brought me here?”
Fenerbahçe, despite the rigging allegations, is still the Turkish champion that will be bearing the nation’s flag in the Champions League proper. And the acts of hooliganism and intimidation at Şükrü Saracoğlu on Thursday do not bode well for the image of Turkish football -- to say the least.
Blame the TFF
Once again, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) is to blame. For three weeks the TFF has done practically nothing on the ongoing case and has been dragging its feet, beating around the bush and passing the ball either to the prosecutors or UEFA.
If the TFF had conducted its own investigation when this thing all started, it at least would have been able to separate the corn from the chaff and make certain decisions which may have remedied the situation. It didn’t do that and now tempers are flaring as each side accused in the scandal is claiming innocence. If this league season ever starts, whenever that will be, it is for sure not going to be the best of seasons.
Fenerbahçe Chairman Yıldırım says he will call it quits
Fenerbahçe Chairman Aziz Yıldırım has said in a letter to the club’s fans that he will leave his post after, what he described as, “tackling the process.”
Fenerbahçe’s ailing chairman was remanded in custody on charges of match-fixing and forming a criminal organization earlier this month and was repeatedly hospitalized because of his poor health. “Fenerbahçe will only remain a love in my heart for the rest of my life after I tackle this process,” Yıldırım said in the emotionally written letter he sent to Fenerbahçe fans.
He said he will continue to serve the club during the investigation process and that he will quit after it is completed. Other Fenerbahçe board members are also among the 26 people who have been remanded in custody after police raids two weeks ago, prompted by alleged evidence of result manipulation in 19 matches.
Potential sanctions include stripping Fenerbahçe of its title and relegating the team to second division. FFenerbahçe won 16 of 17 league matches in the latter part of the season to come from a distant third and beat Trabzonspor to a record 18th title on goal difference.

UK: Payout for fan bitten by police dog - 22/07/2011
Source : Halifaxcourier.co.uk
A Barnsley FC fan has been awarded £3,750 compensation after he was bitten by a police dog, the Football Supporters' Federation (FSF) has said.
The 22-year-old was bitten on the back while on his way to Sheffield United's Bramall Lane ground in April last year, the FSF said.
He told the FSF website: "Before I'd even finished speaking I was pulled out of the small group and across the road by one policeman and a female officer. There was also a dog handler behind me and the dog - an Alsatian - jumped up and bit me on the back.
"I tried to explain to the officers that I had been bitten and was in pain. The female officer told me to shut up and that there was nothing there. She told me to stop moaning and that she was bored now.
"Blood was running down my back by now, I managed to pull my top up, even though I was still handcuffed, and show the female officer my injuries but she said 'It's nothing, just a scratch'."
He said he was then made the subject of a Section 27 order which allows police to move someone from a specified locality for a period of up to 48 hours if the police say they pose a risk of alcohol-related disorder.
His solicitor, Darren White, pursued a claim for false imprisonment, assault, negligence and breach of human rights.
A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "Derby matches can be highly charged but are usually good-natured affairs, with trouble caused only by a minority of people.
"South Yorkshire Police will continue to take whatever action is needed - including the use of Section 27 notices - to police such games in a bid to keep the majority of those attending safe.
"On occasions where fans believe mistakes have been made, the situation will be reviewed and, if appropriate, action taken."

Piotr Izdebski was in a drunken mob who terrorised the centre of Dundee on the morning of the match between Dundee United and Slask Wroclaw.
A Polish football fan has been fined £400 for his part in a violent rampage through the streets of Dundee on the morning of a European match.
Hundreds of drunken Polish fans, many of them hooded or with scarves pulled across their faces, broke police lines and charged down a city centre street just after 10am on Thursday.
Among them was Piotr Izdebski, who appeared at Dundee Sheriff Court on Friday after he smashed a shop window and hurled a bottle at a passer-by.
The court heard he was in a large group of Slask Wroclaw supporters who terrorised early morning shoppers in Dundee's High Street.
About 2000 Slask Wroclaw fans were in Dundee to watch their team lose the second leg of the Europa League qualifying tie 3-2, but the two away goals meant the Polish side went through to the next round.
Just after 10am Izdebeski was caught on CCTV smashing the window of the Cashino shop, causing £200 of damage, just after he had thrown a bottle at another man and missed.
Procurator fiscal-depute Ross Cargill told the court: "The incident was caught on police CCTV in the High Street and police managed to identify the accused from that. He was traced, cautioned and charged.
Izdebski, 28, a landscape gardener from Northolt, London, pled guilty to a charge of culpable and reckless conduct.
Doug McConnell, defending, said he had been taking strong painkillers for an injury and was "stupid enough" to combine the drugs with alcohol.
He said: "He ruined everything in what should have been an exciting trip to watch the football."
Sheriff Elizabeth Munro fined Izdebski £400 and said: "You came for an enjoyable purpose but it went horribly wrong."
A Tayside Police spokesman said the violence was caused by a "small but vociferous" minority.
"There were some reports of drunkeness and disorder during the day and three Polish men were arrested for minor offences before kick-off," he said.
"Bottles were being thrown by some of the Polish fans and there was some damage to property but serious disorder was prevented by police officers responding quickly and in numbers whenever violence flared.
"To their credit Dundee United fans did not get involved in the trouble.
"As is often the case in these instances, the trouble was caused by a small number of fans fuelled by alcohol who were bent on hooliganism."

UK: Hooligans face being outlawed - 25/07/2011
Source : Chorley-guardian.co.uk
Police chiefs and officials at Chorley FC are going on the offensive to tackle football hooligans.
The Evo-Stik League has just published its fixtures for 2011/12 and it’s feared the home games against well supported FC United on September 10 and Chester City on February 4, 2012, could be hi-jacked by troublemakers.
This year’s game between Chorley and Chester in February attracted a crowd of more than 3,000 but was overshadowed by violent clashes between rival supporters, which resulted in a string of arrests.
Both teams got promoted to the Premier Division and there has already been talk on social media websites like Twitter of ‘carnage’.
As a result the police have already pledged there will be a ‘significant’ presence on the day and that they’ll be holding urgent talks with the club.
Ch Insp Richard Robertshaw said: “Chorley FC is an extremely well supported club and the vast majority of their supporters are well behaved and go solely to watch the football.
“The problems during last season’s match against Chester City have been well publicised and a number of people are now being processed through the court system.
“Both Chester City and FC Utd do have a big following and we are in the process of drawing up plans for the matches.
“We’ll be meeting officials at Chorley FC to discuss both fixtures, but at stage we are planning for a significant police presence at both matches.
“From our point of view we want to make sure the games pass off without trouble and all the talk is about the football.”
Chorley FC chairman Ken Wright said there was no place at Victory Park for troublemakers.
“Last season we had a few people jumping on the bandwagon but they’re not Chorley fans,” he said.
“These are the ones we have to guard against.
“As soon as the fixtures were released we planned to meet with the police and that’s what we’ll do.
“The problems against Chester City were well publicised and we don’t want a repeat.
“The games against FC United and Chester City are likely to be the ones with the biggest crowds.
“We’ve hosted FC United before without any trouble but back then they brought around 1,500 fans and we had 300 supporters. Now we’ll probably get in excess of 1,000.
“It’s important to say that these are only two games in the season.
“We didn’t have any problem in our end-of-season play-offs, which attracted crowds close to 3,000.”

2 hours before kick off 70-80 lads attacked the pub of local side, close to the stadium (they also mobb up there before every home game). We surprised them and won. The police were suprised too, so the only thing they made after the fight was ton escort away supporters to their sector, nobody was arrested. I can say it was a clear fight no weapons, only some chairs and bottles.

Oman awarded World Cup win after violence stopped match
Oman advanced to the next stage of the Asian World Cup qualifying campaign on Friday after FIFA awarded them victory over Myanmar in a match abandoned in the 92nd minute because of crowd violence.
Oman were leading the preliminary round game 2-0 in the Myanmar capital Yangon on Thursday and were 4-0 ahead on aggregate when Japanese referee Ryuji Sato halted the match two minutes into stoppage time after fans hurled rocks and glass bottles at him, the visiting coach Paul Le Guen and the Oman players.
FIFA said in a statement on Friday: "The Bureau of the Organising Committee of the FIFA World Cup has confirmed that the result standing at the time of the interruption of the match (2-0 for Oman) is final.
"Therefore, Oman is qualified for the next round of Asia's preliminary competition."
The matter will also be referred to the Disciplinary Committee, the statement added.
Despite a heavy police presence, Myanmar fans turned unruly when Sato awarded a penalty to Oman with the home side trailing 1-0 and staring at early elimination from Asian qualifying for the 2014 finals in Brazil.
Oman's Ismail al Ajmi converted the spot kick to put his side 2-0 ahead after 39 minutes, sparking anger among the crowd at the Thuwunna Stadium and prompting players to flee for cover in the dressing room.
After returning to play out the rest of the match, the game was eventually abandoned when the fans started throwing missiles on to the pitch.
Frenchman Le Guen coached Cameroon at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and has previously worked at Paris St Germain, Olympique Lyon and Glasgow Rangers.

Turkish football body punishes Fener for fan violence in Shakhtar match - 27/07/2011
Source : Todayszaman.com
The Turkish Football Federation's (TFF) Professional Soccer Disciplinary Committee (PFDK) has sentenced champion Fenerbahçe to playing two matches at home without the attendance of its fans after hundreds of Fenerbahçe fans stormed the pitch during a friendly against Ukrainian champion Shakhtar Donetsk, forcing the game to be cancelled.
Fenerbahçe fans -- some wearing masks and T-shirts bearing the picture of jailed club President Aziz Yıldırım -- invaded the pitch in the 67th minute of the game last Thursday at Fenerbahçe's Şükrü Saracoğlu stadium.
Media representatives were evacuated from the stadium after being abused by fans that were angry with the media's coverage of a match-fixing probe that implicated Yıldırım and Fenerbahçe along with other club officials and players.
The PFDK said Fenerbahçe fans will not be able to attend the team's first two official matches at home.

Match abandoned after firecrackers thrown on field
A Swedish league match between Malmo FF and Djurgarden IF has been abandoned only 11 minutes into the game after several firecrackers were thrown onto the field. Referee Martin Johansson told national news agency TT that at least five firecrackers hit the ground Saturday before he realized what was going on, saying ''we don't dare to keep on playing, the risks are too great and it concerns everyone's safety.'' This is the second time this season that one of Malmo's matches has been called off and the third in the league due to fan violence. A match between Malmo and Helsingborg was abandoned when a spectator entered the field and pushed the team's goalkeeper, and a Syrianska-AIK game was called off when firecrackers were thrown close to a linesman.
A hotly contested Allsvenskan football match between Malmö FF and Stockholm's Djurgården was terminated after only 12 minutes of play Saturday afternoon after several fireworks were thrown onto the pitch.
It remains unclear which team will be awarded the win for the suspended match.
"With so many and powerful bangs, we didn't dare continue to play," head referee Martin Hansson told Canal Plus.
While Malmö took an early 1-0 lead in the home match at the city's Swedbank Arena, fireworks began raining down on the field after only six minutes.
By the 12 minute mark, the lead referee Martin Hansson blew his whistle again and halted the match.
All players evacuated the field but the firecrackers continued.
Seven were thrown in total, with one landing near a Canal-plus technician during the few minutes of play, causing the media to vacate that area of the arena.
”I did not notice the bangs at first because I was so concentrated on the match. But then there was no other option than to break. All agreed that the security was not enough,” Hansson told Canal Plus.
While players and fans waited for the final decision from officials, a person waving a Malmö FF towel provokingly walked into the Djurgården supporters' side, sparking a fight.
After nearly 30 minutes of deliberations between officials, police, and security personnel, the decision was made to cancel the match altogether.
"You can't play football under these conditions," said Hansson.
"It's a tragedy; I feel empty."
Secretary General for Swedish Elite Football (Svensk Elitfotboll, SEF) Tommy Theorin was present at the Swedbank Stadium and expressed his frustration over the day's events.
”I am appalled. It is sad and not good for premier division football,” he told newspaper Dagens Industri (DN).
According to local newspaper Sydsvenskan, hundreds of Djurgården supporters were let into the stadium without going through complete security checks.
”We made the decision that it was safer to quickly bring in all the fans on-time to the match than to check them as thoroughly as usually do,” supporter police Henrik Qvist told Sydsvenskan.
It remains uncertain which fan base threw the firecrackers.
While Malmö supporter police told the TT news agency that the fireworks came from Djurgården section, Canal-Plus reported they also came from the section above where Malmö fans were seated.
The Swedish Football Association's disciplinary board will review videos from the stadium and reports from the referees and football clubs before determining which team will be assigned the victory.
”The main responsibility for the security of the arena is the home club, it is responsible for everything except the sections that are assigned to the away team supporters, and at present we do not know where the explosions came from,” Chairman of the Football Association’s disciplinary committee Khennet Tall Inger told DN.
The Board is expected to decide within 14 days.
Police had not yet made any arrests and no further trouble was reported after the cancelled match, the third of the season interrupted by fireworks from the stands.
