Shrimps fan banned from every ground in the UK - 23/07/2009

Source : Lancaster Today

A FOOTBALL fan has been banned from all English football grounds after shouting racist abuse at a youngster.
Police officers applied for Anthony McClinton to be made the subject of a Football Banning Order following the incident involving an 11-year-old boy at Morecambe Football Club's Christie Park ground on March 28 this year.

McClinton, of West End Road, Morecambe, appeared before Lancaster Magistrates last Friday and admitted racially aggravated public disorder.

The 48-year-old tried to appeal against the banning order, which prevents him from attending any designated football match in the UK, but magistrates agreed it should be imposed.

McClinton is also banned from entering a designated area surrounding Morecambe Football Club's ground six hours prior to, and six hours after, each home match.

DC Jon Shaw, Morecambe police, said: "McClinton shouted racial abuse at a young child and this is clearly both unacceptable and disgraceful behaviour that will not be tolerated at Morecambe Football Club – or at any other club in the country.

"Football banning orders are a useful policing tool that help us to prevent those who cannot behave in an acceptable manner from ruining the enjoyment of the game for genuine fans."

McClinton was also ordered to pay a fine and costs. The offence took place at the Morecambe v Luton Town FC League 2 fixture.

Slovak police say treatment of Hajduk fans was justified - 31/07/2009

Source : Croatian Times + torcida.org (pics)

The Slovak police claimed today (Fri) all their actions against Hajduk Split fans had been justified and reasonable.

Around 200 Hajduk fans were arrested and 15 injured in a clash with policemen before the Hajduk-Zilina game yesterday in Bratislava.

The clash started when police would not let the fans enter the stadium because they had been banned from two European away games.

Fans succeeded in purchasing tickets despite the ban, but the police refused to let them in.

The fans later claimed the police had been too aggressive, but the police said they had followed regulations and the fans had refused to obey them.

The police also claimed fans had abused local residents, engaged in vandalism and injured eight policemen.

The Croatian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said the Slovak police did their job correctly.

Croatian police spokesman Krunoslav Borovec said Croatian police would exchange information with their Slovak colleagues.

Arrested fans are being released and sent home with a police escort. All of them will be banned from entering EU member states for five years, the daily Slobodna Dalmacija has reported.

SV Austria Salzburg - Dinamo Zagreb - Champions League - 29/07/2009

Source : The Canadian Press

Salzburg face charges over thrown cup incident

Red Bull Salzburg faces charges by UEFA after an assistant referee was hit in the head by an object thrown from the stands during Wednesday's Champions League qualifier against Dinamo Zagreb.

Martin Wilczek of the Czech Republic sustained a cut above his left eye when he was hit by a plastic cup in injury time. The cup first hit Dinamo forward Mario Mandzukic, who was unhurt, before also hitting Wilczek.

Referee Pavel Kralovec whistled for the end of the match, which was drawn 1-1, immediately after the incident.

Chairman Thomas Partl of UEFA's disciplinary committee said Thursday that Salzburg could be punished by a fine or might have to play its next European home game in an empty stadium.

Colombia: Real Cartagena - Independiente Medellin - 25/07/2009

Source : Latin American Herald Tribune

Cop Wounded in Colombia Football Violence

A police officer was injured and six people were arrested in the violence following a first division football match in the Caribbean resort city of Cartagena, authorities said.

The brawl broke out after Sunday’s contest in which Real Cartagena lost 3-1 at home to Independiente Medellin.

A number of fans wielding stones and clubs clashed with a police squad deployed to maintain public order outside Jaime Moron Stadium, saying they were protesting the alleged bad refereeing of Sunday’s match.

Real Cartagena supporters slammed referee Oscar Reyes for annulling two goals by the local team and for throwing two of its players out of the game.

Stones thrown in the clash injured an auxiliary policeman who suffered a jaw trauma, according to the Red Cross in Cartagena.

“What occurred today was premeditated. They cornered us and sparked a problem of public order, because really what happened today was a disgrace – Independiente Medellin was playing with 14,” the president of Real Cartagena, Rodrigo Rendon, said.

He said that Reyes’ performance will be denounced before the National Refereeing Commission of Colombia’s Professional League.

Referee Reyes and his assistants left the stadium under police protection.

42 deaths linked to football in Brazil - 22/07/2009

Source : USA Today

Football violence is killing about four people a year in Brazil, according to a sociologist's study.

Mauricio Murad says deaths related to soccer games are also on the rise in the nation hosting the 2014 World Cup.

His data show 42 people were killed in connection to Brazilian football games in the last 10 years, behind only Argentina (49) and Italy (45).

But Murad says that in 2007-2008, Brazil had the most deaths -- seven -- while five were killed in Italy and four in Argentina.

Murad called Monday for Brazil to pass laws specifically targeting football violence.

Rangers fans hunted after Dundee attack - 19/07/2009

Source : Aberdeen Press and Journal

police look at footage from cameras

POLICE in Dundee are searching through CCTV footage after a man was assaulted by a group of Rangers fans.

The 25-year-old was attacked as he walked in the city centre early on Sunday.

Tayside Police said the assault happened at about 4am as the man made his way home from the Seagate.

He was walking in Victoria Road when he first became aware of a group of four or five men in their mid-20s.

The 25-year-old met the group at Victoria Road’s junction with Victoria Street, and chatted with them.

As the victim crossed Victoria Street, he felt a blow from behind and fell to the ground where the attack continued.

A spokesman for Tayside Police said: “The group then walked off towards Dens Road, leaving the man with grazes and bruises.

“He did not require medical attention. While he was there, a woman approached him and spoke with him, and officers are keen to trace her as she may have information that is useful to inquiries.

“Officers have been carrying out door-to-door inquiries in the area and are reviewing CCTV coverage of the area.

“Tayside Police would appeal to anyone who has information that could be of assistance to the investigation to contact officers.”

One of the men responsible was about 6ft 2in, of stocky build, with short brown hair. Another was about 5ft 1in, slim and had long blond hair.

The remaining members of the group were about 6ft with short hair. They all wore blue Rangers football tops.

Hooligan spotters out for East Lancs Masters derby - 24/07/2009

Source : Blackburn Citizen

THE first Blackburn Rovers and Burnley derby of the season takes place this weekend — and police are taking precautions to ensure it passess safely.

The clubs will clash in the Masters Football veterans competition in front of 10,000 at the MEN arena in Manchester and the Sky TV Cameras.

Masters events are known as friendly, family days out and those are the expectations for Saturday.

But as a precaution, Lancashire police chiefs are sending its football intelligence officers to the ground.

They know the hooligans connected to both clubs and will be on the lookout to ensure no troublemakers tarnish the event.

Chief Inspector Terry Woods, from Lancashire police, said: “We have been working closely with our colleagues from Greater Manchester Police to ensure people can attend and enjoy a great day out watching football.

"Lancashire Football Intelligence Officers will be present at the event to support our Greater Manchester colleagues.”

A spokeswoman for GMP confirmed the competition has been categorised the same priority as pop concerts at the stadium and no trouble is expected.

North Lancashire Rovers Supporters’ Club committee member Gary Crowcroft, 43, said: "Nobody wants to lose to Burnley and in whatever match the teams meet I desperately want the victory. There are idiots in every group of supporters but this event will be light hearted and I would be shocked if there was any problems."

Chairman of Burnley supporters group the Colne Clarets, Alan Beecroft, 56, agreed: "It is always a charged occasion when we play Blackburn but this game will be a family affair free from crowd disturbances."

An arena spokesman said: "For years we have welcomed Manchester City, United, Liverpool and Blackburn fans without the need to segregate, and we have no reason to believe that Burnley's addition to the tournament will spoil the party atmosphere.

"However, our stewards are highly professional and will be in a position to respond appropriately if the excitement gets the better of any supporters."

Manchester United, Manchester City, Bolton Wanderers and Oldham Athletic are also playing in the six-a-side competition.

CELTIC AND RUSSIAN FANS CLASH IN GLASGOW

Season 09/10 - July - Page 3 Celticdinamomoscow0910
OUCHSKI! This is the moment a Russian football thug was knocked out by a brick during a fierce street battle in Glasgow this week.

Our exclusive pictures show Dinamo Moscow fans brawling with rival Celtic casuals.

The football war - before the Champions League qualifier at Parkhead on Wednesday - left one lout lying unconscious after he was hit by a flying missile.

The thug was later dragged away by his Russian pals before cops and an ambulance arrived.

The riot was sparked when around 20 Dinamo hooligans armed with bottles, bricks and bits of wood charged a group of Hoops casuals in the city centre.

A witness to the mayhem - which left one Celtic fan with a gashed forehead - said: "It was like a scene from the Wild West. It's amazing nobody was killed.

"The Russian thugs travelled thousands of miles with the sole intention of causing trouble here.

"The mob were screaming and they looked drunk. Some may even have been on DRUGS."

A police spokeswoman said: "We received reports of groups fighting in George Street. Officers attended but the trouble had dispersed by then. Police spoke to one fan who had a facial injury but he declined assistance."

The brawl has raised fears for the return leg in Moscow on Wednesday.

Around 1,500 Celtic fans will make the trip, even though their team trail 1-0.

Last night a Celtic spokesman said: "Our supporters have an enviable record of conduct when travelling in Europe and we would expect next week's trip to be no different."

Probe reveals rise in football violence arrests - 15/07/2009

Source : chroniclelive.co.uk

FOOBALL violence has soared over the last year, as organised hooliganism made a comeback.

A Chronicle probe reveals nearly twice as many people were arrested at Toon home and away games, compared to the previous season.

Louts were arrested for offences ranging from brawling and missile throwing to pitch running and racist chanting during United’s doomed campaign.

And the number of thugs banned from the sport has nearly tripled in just 12 months on the back of a string of large-scale dust-ups involving so-called Magpies fans.

Police say Newcastle’s hooligan element – dubbed the Gremlins – became increasingly active during the course of last season, coordinating organised scraps with rival firms.

But they have hit back, targeting known troublemakers and arresting anyone seen stepping out of line before, during and after games.

Officers today issued a warning to fans thinking of causing bother during the Toon’s maiden Championship campaign they will crack down hard on them and continue their policy of seeking stadium bans where necessary.

Sgt Glenn Patterson, of Northumbria Police’s football intelligence unit, said: “The rise in arrests is partly down to the behaviour of fans but also down to the proactive stance we are now taking to crack down on any form of disorder at football matches.

“As well as making arrests on the day of games, we also study CCTV footage after the event and look to arrest anyone we can identify engaging in violence or disorder, using media appeals where necessary.

“There has been a increase in activity among risk supporters over the last year and we have addressed that through the targeted, proactive use of banning orders aimed at those we suspect will be involved in organised football violence.”

Figures accessed by the Chronicle reveal there were 79 arrests at Newcastle home games last season, compared to 38 the year before, with 78 away from home, which was up from 49 in 2007/08. In 2005/06, there were just 26 arrests at St James’s Park and 30 at away grounds.

Football banning orders can be slapped on supporters convicted of offences at matches or immediately before or after games. Alternatively, officers can build stand-alone cases against so-called “risk supporters” who they believe are involved in organised disorder.

Our figures also reveal there are now 82 Newcastle followers with football banning orders, most of which have conditions banning them from city centre for four hours before and after games, as well as stopping them following the Toon home or away. That is up from 29 in 2007/08 and 16 five years ago.

Last season saw the re-emergence of organised violence involving Newcastle’s hooligan element, including a dust-up with hardcore thugs from the Stoke City Firm.

The clash, on December 6 2008, resulted in a brawl on Wrekenton High Street which left locals terrified. Dozens of police officers and 25 vehicles were drafted in to contain the disorder after troubled flared in the Stormont Main working men’s club.

It then moved on to the Seven Sisters pub, on the high street, as a police helicopter also hovered above taking surveillance pictures and relaying information to officers on the ground.

And when Newcastle played Chelsea in the Premier League, Glasgow Rangers-supporting hooligans, who have an affiliation with the London side, travelled down to fight with a local mob.

Football intelligence officers on Tyneside were contacted by the British Transport Police to say between 20-30 Rangers fans were heading to the city.

A team was deployed to Central Station in a bid to prevent them hooking-up with hooligan gangs ahead of the fixture.

The Rangers group safely arrived in the Chelsea end for the game, which the Londoners won 2-0, and there was no disorder before or during the match.

But a couple of hours after the final whistle, reports were received of fighting in and around Central Station, involving Rangers, Chelsea and United followers.

Witnesses said people had been injured, but when police arrived no-one would make a complaint.

Newcastle’s season ended in relegation and Northumbria Police has already prepared for the club and its supporters visiting a new set of towns and grounds.

Sgt Patterson said: “Just because the season is over, it does not mean it is the end of business for us. It is a 365 day a year job for us.

“During the close season, we review CCTV and other intelligence gathered during the season and are always looking to improve the way we police football.

“In terms of next season, we have already had discussions with every away team and the relevant police force and there will be a Northumbria Police presence at every match.

“We understand football is an exciting game and emotions run high but there is a line we can’t let people cross. We have a duty to allow the law-abiding football-supporting public to enjoy the game.”

FOOTBALL violence has been glamorised in books and films for years.

Movies such as The Football Factory, ID, Rise of the Footsoldier and Green Street have been big box office hits.

And several terrace terrors have even made a name for themselves in the literary world. One of them, Cass Pennant, wrote his autobiography after ending up in jail.

The West Ham fan was part of the infamous hooligan gang ICF (Inter City Firm). His experiences even made the big screen last year as Cass was released.

As the films keep coming thick and fast, with all-star casts, many fear it is encouraging many to pursue organised violence.

But Dr Joan Harvey, a senior lecturer in psychology at Newcastle University, believes hooligan films are no worse than other violent movies.

She said: "People who resort to violence will glamourise any violent film. Reservoir Dogs would appeal to these people just as much.

"People these days can make their own films just by using a mobile phone and posting footage of fighting on the internet. Not on Facebook or Youtube, but their own sites.

"These are not just 18-year-olds, but older men, some in quite decent jobs. I wouldn’t call them fans, these people like the tribal nature.

"They become a member of a tribe so they can organise fights with other tribes, in this case football clubs.

"They will try to goad other people into these fights as if they were fighting for the club.

"I don’t think there has been an increase in the actual number of thugs. I would expect more arrests for being drunk and disorderly last season with the misery of relegation and supporters drowning their sorrows, but the increase is probably down to police taking a more active stance against violence."

THE NUMBER of football banning orders on North East hooligans has nearly tripled in a year.

Soccer yobs have been hit with bans for a number of reasons, ranging from invading the pitch and throwing missiles to racist chanting and being linked to organised hooligan gangs.

They include known "risk supporter" Paul Peet, who has been spotted several times with notorious Newcastle United yobs, many of whom he was seen with on the traffic island near Newcastle’s Union Rooms during the Newcastle-Hull game last September.

Peet, 49, of Frankland Road, Durham, was also seen in a group causing disorder after the Tyne Wear derby at St James’s Park in April 2007.

In October 2003, he had been involved in a violent clash which saw 87 arrested by Dutch police before the team’s match at Breda in 2003.

The thug who got the longest ban last season was Raymond Etchells, 34, of Dunston Tower, Gateshead, who was seen pushing an industrial-sized wheelie bin into the police line, before picking up a table from outside the Lounge bar and nightclub, on Neville Street, and throwing it at police.

He was convicted of affray in relation to the offence, which took place after the same April 2007 derby.

He was jailed for three months and given a six-year football banning order.

And 10 Magpies louts were banned for their part in a large- scale brawl during a United pre- season friendly at Carlisle, which terrified families in a city centre bar.

Glasses and chairs were thrown and blows exchanged, while children cowered under the tables of the Pippins pub during the fight, all of which was captured on CCTV.

The gang were Richard Carter, 37, of Sidney Terrace, Tanfield Lea, Durham, who appeared, along with nephew Graeme Carter, 25, of Northlea, also Tanfield Lea.

Also involved was Mark Barrett, 32, of Litchfield Crescent, Winlaton Gateshead. John Wood, 24, of Broadoak, Wardley, Gateshead, and James Mullarky, 24, of Hall Terrace, Bill Quay, also Gateshead.

They were joined in the dock at Carlisle Crown Court by Trevor Reed, 43, of Fairhills Road, Dipton, County Durham, and Raymond Galbraith, 34, of Broadpark, Wardley.

The final three were Rob Dixon, 25, of Parkside, Tanfield Lea, Simon Chollerton, 38, of High Street, Tow Law, County Durham, and Anthony Hamilton, 34, of St Julien Gardens, Cochrane Park, Newcastle. All admitted affray and got bans.
