Swiss football season kicks off - 12/07/2009

Source: http://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/swissinfo.html?siteSect=86005&sid=10945049&cKey=1247328014000&ty=nd

The Swiss Super League football championships started on Saturday, with 1-0 victory for FC Aarau over Zurich's Grasshoppers club.Tougher measures are being applied to hooligans this season, following a peak in violence in the last one. For the first time a justice official in St Gallen will offer quick judgements against offenders.

Favourites for victory in the 2009/2010 season are FC Zurich, which have won three times in the past four years.

On Sunday FC St Gallen meet FC Basel. This will be the first match featuring an examining magistrate, who will be allowed to conduct a summary trial should there be any violence.

"We want to convict violent offenders as quickly as possible," St Gallen examining magistrate Simon Burger told swissinfo.ch ahead of the game.

The magistrate will be present at the match to witness events, but the judgements will take place in the magistrate's office, around two kilometres away from the arena.

The Swiss Football Association has welcomed the move and said that it hoped that other cantons would adopt the idea.

Last year was marked by a number of violent clashes between fans. This prompted Sepp Blatter, the Swiss president of the world footballing body Fifa, to warn that Switzerland lagged five to ten years behind other European countries in tackling football hooliganism.

Irish football fans trample elderly Austrian woman

(AP) — SALZBURG, Austria - Austrian police say three Irish fans of Dublin football club Bohemians trampled an elderly woman, and the victim is fighting for her life in a hospital.

Officials in Salzburg launched a manhunt for the three, but said Wednesday they eluded capture despite police efforts to seal off the city's downtown Tuesday night.

Authorities said the suspects were fleeing police after stealing a bicycle when they ran into the 83-year-old woman, knocking her to the ground and stepping on her. She suffered critical head injuries.

Police said they believe the three men are Irish nationals. They were checking Salzburg hotels.

Security was tightened ahead of Wednesday evening's Champions League qualifying match between the Bohemians and Red Bull Salzburg.

Chile : Universidad de Chile - Union Española - 07/07/2009

Source : Latin American Herald Tribune

One Injured, 245 Arrested in Football-Related Violence in Chile

One person was seriously injured and 245 others were arrested when celebrations in Santiago over Universidad de Chile’s clinching of the Apertura tournament turned violent, police said Wednesday.

Thousands of Universidad fans poured into the Chilean capital’s streets and parks Tuesday night after their team beat Union Española on a goal by Juan Manuel Olivera in the 63rd minute.

Some 10,000 people packed into the Plaza Italia, which became the center of the celebrations and the scene of the main incidents of violence, police said.

Marcelo Miranda, a 25-year-old Universidad fan, was stabbed by two men who tried to rob him in the middle of the crowd.

Miranda was hospitalized and the two suspects were arrested, police said.

Several businesses, including two pharmacies, were damaged and looted by groups of vandals, police said, adding that water hoses and tear gas had to be used to break up the crowd.

Of the 245 people detained, 31 are minors, Carabineros militarized police force spokesman Col. Jorge Fernandez told reporters, adding that most of the arrests were made for drug possession, robbery, attempted robbery and disorderly conduct.

In Argentina, fans from the same team fight - 09/07/2009

Source : Reuters

The English hooligan problem was at its worst outside Britain, when fans went to international matches abroad. Violence in Argentine football, by contrast, has reached a point in recent years where it is rarely even a confrontation between the hardcore fans of rival teams.

Now, factions who support the same team fight each other. At stake is control over a number of money-spinning ventures linked to their clubs.

It might appear paradoxical at first that just when Huracan have produced a stylish attacking team which nearly won the Argentine league title, their hardcore fans should to go war with each other.

Two men died and a number of people were injured in recent fighting in the Buenos Aires barrio of Parque de los Patricios just hours after the team’s 3-0 home win over Arsenal had put them a point clear at the top of the standings. (They then unluckily lost the title decider to Velez Sarsfield.)

Fighting between groups from the same set of fans has nothing to do with on-field performance, except that a more succesful team generates higher crowds and therefore more business for the gangs (control of parking in the area, the sale of food, resale of match tickets and even drugs.)

La Zavaleta, a faction that had been marginalised a few years ago and kept quiet while Huracan languished in the National B championship (second tier), wanted a piece of the action but the powerful Jose C Paz and El Pueblito groups were reluctant to let go and violence ensued.

The government and the Argentine Football Association via its president Julio Grondona, tried to argue that the killings had nothing to do with football because they occurred far from the ground and were committed by criminals who don’t care about the game.

They are constantly criticised by the media and by organisations representing victims of football violence for not taking preventative measures.

Thugs seem able to carry all kinds of illegal items into grounds under the very eyes of the police.

Unusally, the Jose C Paz faction posted an apology for the violence on a website although it went on to say La Zavaleta needed to be taught a lesson.

The lesson clubs never seem to learn is that as long as they give favours to hardcore fans and allow them to exercise power in and around the clubs, the violence will not go away.

Rangers fan imprisoned and banned - 09/07/2009

Source : BBC NEWS

A Rangers supporter has been jailed for more than five months and banned from football matches for the next 10 years following a clash with rival fans.

Graham Hill, 33, from Tullibody, Clackmannanshire, was involved in a disturbance between Rangers and Hibs fans following a match in Glasgow.

The incident happened on 20 December last year at Queen Street Station.

The 10-year football ban is the longest that can be imposed by the courts and police said it should act as a warning.

'Clear message'

Ch Insp Alex McGuire, from British Transport Police (BTP), said: "The BTP officers at the station quickly brought the situation under control before it could escalate and arrested Hill in what we know was a pre-planned encounter between the two sets of fans.

"With the new football season about to get under way, this custodial sentence and maximum football banning order imposed sends out a clear message that disorder on the rail network will not be tolerated.

"Anyone involved in disorder, anti-social behaviour, or any kind of criminality will have their details passed to those clubs who have already signed an official data-sharing protocol and football banning orders will be sought.

"BTP will continue to work closely with colleagues from forces all over the country to exchange intelligence and ensure passengers and rail staff can travel on match days without hindrance."

During the 2008/09 season, BTP arrested 63 people for football-related offences across Scotland.

Kenny Scott, head of security and operations at Rangers, said: "Rangers Football Club continues to work closely with both British Transport Police and Strathclyde Police to eliminate all forms of anti-social behaviour associated with football."

Hooligans cause international incident at Budapest football match

Fans of the Ferencváros football club attacked supporters of visiting German club Hertha Berlin shouting "Sieg Heil," at a friendly football match in Budapest on Tuesday. One German suffered a facial injury that was sewn up by the Berlin club's team doctor.

Security guards looked on but did nothing, a Hertha fan told the German tabloid Bild.

Hertha manager Michael Preetz said "we could see from the bench what was developing and asked organisers at half time to request police help".

Police refused, saying FTC had not hired them to keep order inside the stadium.

The FTC fans were reportedly angry that the club had changed its security company.

"They have caused great damage to Hungary," said Hertha's Hungarian vice-captain Pál Dárdai.

Unrest over police fan death term - 15/07/2009

Source : ANSA.it

Two arrested after Rome incidents

Dozens of football fans threw stones and firecrackers at police in Rome early Wednesday in protest at a policeman's sentence in a fan death in 2007.

After the incidents, two 'ultra' Lazio supporters were arrested.

Police found Nazi and Fascist flags, helmets, balaclavas and baseball bats at the homes of the two men, aged 23 and 28.

On Tuesday fans staged angry protests in Arezzo when the policeman who shot Lazio fan Gabriele Sandri dead in November 2007 was convicted of manslaughter rather than murder.

The officer, Luigi Spaccarotella, got six years instead of the 14 years the prosecution had sought. ''Pigs, shame on you!' shouted fans while Sandri's mother fainted before saying: ''They've killed him all over again''.

Spaccarotella, 36, denied shooting to kill Rome DJ and Lazio fan Sandri, 26, after a scuffle between two small groups of Lazio and Juventus fans at a Tuscan service station on November 11, 2007.

But after a preliminary investigation into the death, prosecutors sought murder charges.

In his final questioning session, the agent confirmed his claim that the shot that killed Sandri went off accidentally as he was running to get a better view of the incident on the other side of the motorway.

A lawyer acting for Sandri's family said the officer's claim contradicted testimony from two eye witnesses who said they saw Spaccarotella firing at head height with both hands on his gun.

Sandri's death sparked widespread riots and led to the suspension of Italian soccer play for a day.

There are now fears of trouble at Lazio games when the season resumes in late August.

Spaccarotella apparently acted in the belief that Sandri and his friends were making a getaway after robbing the petrol station - when in fact they were speeding off after the scuffle.

Police have speculated that Spaccarotella may have been aiming at the car's tyres.

''But if he was doing so he was taking an enormous risk,'' Arezzo Police Chief Vincenzo Giacobbe said.

Giacobbe said a police-issue bullet was found in the body of Sandri, a rising Rome DJ who was travelling to see Lazio play Inter in Milan.

Sandri and three companions had just jumped back into their car after a scuffle with Juventus fans and were heading out of the service station when the bullet entered the rear-side window of the vehicle and hit Sandri in the neck.

On the evening of Sandri's death, some 40 policemen were injured in a night of street violence around Rome's Olympic Stadium.

The most seriously injured was a police officer hit by a metal bar in an assault on a police station near the stadium.

Several right-wing hooligans, mostly Lazio fans, were convicted of orchestrating the riots in which an estimated 500 fans attacked three police stations and the headquarters of the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI).

Damage to various buildings and vehicles was said to have been ''incalculable''.

Incidents also took place in Bergamo, Milan and other Italian cities.

Experts said hooligans had in any case been ''regrouping'' after being curbed by government measures and therefore allegedly seized on Sandri's death to renew assaults on the police.

Dutch fans banned after Bristol City match violence - 17/07/2009

Source : thisisbristol.co.uk

Two Dutch football fans have been given banning orders after violence flared before and after Bristol City's friendly with Ajax at Ashton Gate on Wednesday.
There were 10 arrests for assault, violence and disorder, including nine Dutch fans and one City supporter.
As reported by the Bristol Evening Post yesterday, police were faced with a 30-strong group of drunk Dutch fans, all carrying bottles and pint glasses, who ran at them in Canons Way near the city centre.
One, a 21-year-old student, was arrested for hitting a police officer. He spent the rest of the day and night in police cells and missed the match.
Another Dutch fan, a 25-year-old builder, was arrested at the turnstiles at Ashton Gate after he kicked an officer three times as police escorted 100 fans to the game. He too spent a night in the cells.
Both men got conditional discharges for assaulting police officers when they appeared before Bristol magistrates but were each banned from football matches in England and Wales for three years.
The court was told that the crowd being escorted was so hostile that one officer was forced to draw his electric stun gun. Police spokesman Simon Whitby said: "All the arrests on the night were outside the ground or in the city centre, before and after the game. There were no arrests within the ground itself."
Yesterday student Camiel Blok, of Duinen Burg, Hoofddorp, Holland, admitted assaulting a police officer, as nine of his friends watched from the public gallery at Bristol Magistrates' Court.
Prosecutor Kirsty Allman said: "There was a hostile atmosphere. Many supporters had bottles and pint glasses. They were shouting and raising their arms."
Blok shoved an officer in the chest and swore at her after she told him drinking in the street was not allowed.
He ran off but was detained at the bottom of Park Street. Karen Jones, defending, said Blok had "consumed quite a bit of alcohol". She said: "He missed the match as a result of what he did and is very sorry for pushing the officer."
He was given a three-year football banning order, a one-year conditional discharge and was ordered to pay £60 costs.
Rick Halman, of Jan Peiter Hejes Straat, Amsterdam, also admitted assaulting a police officer on the Long Ashton bypass on the way to Ashton Gate.
He was given an 18-month conditional discharge, a three-year football banning order and told to pay £60 court costs.
The court heard that police were escorting a large group of Dutch supporters to the stadium when Halman was seen throwing a beer bottle which smashed.
A police officer took hold of Halman's arm but at that point other supporters dragged him away as he kicked the police officer in the legs three times. He was later spotted at the turnstiles and arrested.
He admitted kicking the officer and said he had been drunk. The court heard he had lost his wallet and passport, missed the match and would have to seek help from the Dutch embassy to get home.
Two more Dutch fans were arrested for possession of cocaine on Tuesday. They have been cautioned and released.
Bristol City spokesman Adam Baker said the club supported any police action and would take action themselves if anyone associated with the club was involved.
He said: "We abhor any trouble, especially for a friendly of this nature. We will support the police in any action they take and will take action ourselves if anyone associating themselves with Bristol City Football Club was involved.
"Overall, however, there were nearly 11,000 people attending the match, including many families, and it was a fantastic occasion. Ajax are four-times European champions and we hope to attract teams of their quality in future pre-season campaigns."

Scotland: Sectarian football fan is fined - 16/07/2009

Source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotland/tayside_and_central/8154235.stm

A 26-year-old St Johnstone fan has been fined £260 and told not to return to McDairmid Park after singing sectarian songs on a packed train.

Perth Sheriff Court heard that Colin Morrison, of Perth, sang the "Billy Boys" as 80 St Johnstone fans travelled back from a game on 25 April this year.

Witnesses said that about 15 minutes into the journey, Morrison stood up in the carriage and began singing.

He was arrested and moved to another carriage by officers who were on board.

Defence agent Paul Ralph claimed those that had complained about the singing had been unconcerned by the song when it was sung by others at the game against Dundee.

'Attracted attention'

He said: "What then happened was that my client then heard somebody singing a Celtic song, which made him launch into this song. He attracted attention to himself.

"He has had a letter saying he is not welcome at McDiarmid Park. He also had to turn up and apologise to colleagues at work."

Mr Ralph told the court that Morrison had spent two nights in custody after being arrested in the wake of the First Division match.

Sheriff William Gilchrist said: "This is the sort of behaviour which can escalate into further trouble. Thankfully it was nipped in the bud very quickly."

Morrison admitted shouting and swearing and breaching the peace.

'Ban Sunderland from Ajax tournament,' says Amsterdam mayor - 13/07/2009

Source : guardian.co.uk

• Fears Sunderland and Newcastle fans will clash at friendlies
• FA has spoken to Dutch counterparts about potential for trouble

The mayor of Amsterdam, Job Cohen, wants to ban Sunderland from the Amsterdam Tournament later this month because he fears clashes between the club's fans and supporters of Newcastle, who will be playing in nearby Utrecht.

Sunderland have been invited to play in the pre-season tournament – along with Benfica, Atlético Madrid and hosts Ajax – on 24 and 26 July and Black Cats followers have already taken up an allocation of 4,000 tickets.

But with north-east rivals Newcastle also playing in Holland on 26 July, the Football Association have told their Dutch counterparts, the KNVB, they are worried about trouble. Utrecht is around 30 miles from Amsterdam.

"It is out of the question that both clubs can play at the same time," said Cohen. "Talks with the municipal authorities and the club Utrecht have not ended in a result and I don't want to take any risks.

"It's not for nothing that we have been warned by the English FA. I understand that such a measure has far-reaching consequences for Ajax's traditional tournament but the safety of the city is the first priority."

Newcastle slam FA for cancelling friendly as Sunderland get the nod - 14/07/2009

Source : football.co.uk

Newcastle have reacted with dismay after being told by the Football Association that they cannot proceed with a friendly against Dutch side FC Utrecht at the end of the month.

The Magpies, preparing for life in the Coca-Cola Championship after suffering final-day relegation from the top flight last season, had been due to contest the fixture on July 26 but that date clashed with north-east rivals Sunderland's involvement in the annual Amsterdam Tournament.

With both clubs due to be playing matches on the same day just 30 miles apart, fears were raised that violence could break out between rival fans on foreign soil.

Amsterdam's mayor, Job Cohen, yesterday called for Sunderland to be banned from the tournament in an effort to head off the threat of violence, but the English FA last night came down on the side of Sunderland, whose preparations for the event at the Amsterdam ArenA are at an advanced stage.

Tickets have already gone on sale for Sunderland's matches against Benfica and Atletico Madrid on July 24 and 26, while the FA also pointed to the fact that the Black Cats' application to travel to Holland was put forward before Newcastle's.

Sunderland fans have also made travel arrangements while tickets for Newcastle's match with Utrecht had not gone on sale at the time of the FA's decision.

The news is a further blow for Newcastle owner Mike Ashley, who has still not found a buyer for the club despite increasing pressure from both players and fans to find a resolution that will see a full-time manager appointed.

'Newcastle United wish to place on record that they are extremely disappointed by this decision, especially given the fact that on 30 June 2009, the Football Association had approved their application to play in Utrecht, this following discussions with the Dutch FA, Dutch Police, and our own UK Football Policing Unit,' read a club statement.

'The club now finds itself with its pre-season programme of games disrupted and in the unenviable position of trying to organise another game over that weekend in a very short space of time.

'It should be noted also that Newcastle United had already organised flights and hotel accommodation for its travelling party for the game in Holland.

'Newcastle United would like to apologise to its supporters for this situation, particularly those that may have already made travel arrangements, however it is clearly a matter that is completely out of its own control.'

An FA statement confirming the news revealed the decision had not been taken lightly. 'Following conversations with the KNVB [the Dutch FA] and the Mayor of Amsterdam's office, The FA has reluctantly withdrawn permission for Newcastle United to play a friendly with Utrecht on Sunday 26 July,' the FA statement read.

'Following concerns raised by the Mayor of Amsterdam, it became clear that only one of the two teams would be able to travel to Holland and The FA actively sought to resolve the situation.'

FC Utrecht chairman Jan Willem van Dop was left seething by the decision. He told his club's website: 'We've been busy organising this match since June 3. The city and police were involved from the start in the safety measures and they had good contact with their English colleagues.

'On June 30 we even received a fax from the FA in which they told us that they had spoken with the KNVB and given Newcastle United permission to travel to Utrecht.

'After that the city of Amsterdam went into action and the FA withdrew their permission. According to agreements, we didn't sell any tickets to Newcastle fans.

'The organisers of the Amsterdam Tournament did sell tickets to the Sunderland fans and now say they can't take that back. That's really warped. We have a very bad taste in our mouths because of this.'
