| Greece: Three guilty in fan murder case - 14/12/2008
Source: eKathimerini
Riot police fired tear gas yesterday in a bid to restore order outside the criminal appeals court on Alexandras Avenue in central Athens after a ruling that found just three people guilty of the murder of Panathinaikos fan Michalis Filopoulos last year.
The verdict was greeted by a hail of petrol bombs from dozens of Panathinaikos supporters who had gathered outside the court, prompting riot police to respond.
A total of 27 people stood trial in connection with Filopoulos’s murder. Nine had been charged with actually killing him.
The three judges found 36-year-old drug addict Christos Sakatis guilty of stabbing Filopoulos to death and sentenced him to life in prison. Two other men, Nikos Vagiopoulos and Vassilis Psikakos, were found guilty as accomplices and were sentenced to 10 years in jail. Both appealed against the judgment.
The other six men charged with murdering 25-year-old Filopoulos were cleared after the court decided there was not enough evidence to link them with a clash between hooligans in Paeania, east of Athens, in March 2007.
However, eight more people were given jail sentences of between three and six months for misdemeanors, such as illegal use of a weapon, committed during the brawl. Another 10 people were cleared of all charges.
The prosecutor had recommended that 19 of the 27 people that stood trial be found guilty in connection with the fight between some 500 supporters of Panathinaikos and Olympiakos before a women’s volleyball game.
Hooligans from both sides had arranged to meet before the match for a fight, which led to Lavriou Avenue being closed as young men traded blows, smashed cars and chased each other.
Television footage showed Filopoulos lying in the middle of the road with a bloodied face as Olympiakos fans swore at him and threatened to kill him, before locals intervened to protect the dying man.
The incident led to the government banning team sports for 15 days and trying to introduce tougher laws on sports-related violence. Following an initial clampdown on supporters’ clubs, few measures to restore order at Greek sports grounds have taken root. Clashes between fans and police remain a regular feature of the country’s sporting scene.

| Blackburn and Burnley fans brawl on train - 14/12/2008
Source: Lancashire Telegraph
DRUNKEN Burnley and Blackburn fans brought chaos to a train when a large brawl broke out.
Passengers were left in shock after the fight erupted in the train carriage before spilling out onto Blackburn station.
Police said a group of Clarets fans boarded the stationary train, full of post-match Rovers fans, just after 7pm on Saturday.
Two gangs of supporters are thought to have started trading abusive comments before the fight broke out.
As shocked passengers looked on, the violence continued as the men flooded out onto the platform.
British Transport police were alerted to the situation and five men were arrested for public disorder offences. They were taken to Greenbank police station for questioning.
A British Transport Police spokesman said: "This was a very unpleasant incident.
“Drunken behaviour of this kind is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated by the police. Such incidents ruin the enjoyment of match days for the majority of law abiding fans and will be fully investigated by us.
"We would urge anyone who witnessed this disorder to come forward and contact police."
While the Clarets had been celebrating a 3-2 home victory against Southampton, Rovers fans had been commiserating their 11th successive Premier League game without a win, following their 3-0 defeat by Wigan.
It is the second time in recent months that Rovers fans have been involved in violence while travelling on trains.
Following their 0-0 draw at Bolton, rampaging fans ripped metal work from a carriage and used it to dent the roof before smashing the train's window and hurling fireworks around.
Anyone who may have witnessed the fight is asked to contact British transport Police on 0800 40 50 40 .

I sit/stand in the vicinity of 111. When the ball went out for the corner,I guessed the inevitable was about to happen and moved up to the back of the stand to get out rapid at the whistle.I felt totally dispassionate during virtually the whole game, knew what was coming and was noticing some of our fans who were shall we say,a little frustrated. When the goal went in there was a feeling of deja vu clsoely followed by the scousers understandably going apeshit. We kicked off,Elano fell over, the inevitable penalty claim,Vassell falls over, then the final whistle. Next thing Neville runs over to the corner doing his best impression of his tosspot brother against Liverpool. The thing was-the dickhead didn't just celebrate for a few seconds-he stood there for what seemed an eternity-and it wasn't for the benefit of the Everton fans. The next thing-the surge towards the bottom of the stand began from where I was.My thought was "Neville is going to get twatted big time and we are going to get in some seriious shit." Then reality kicks in and it seemed that that the realisation of getting banned for life seemed to stop what could have happened...thenk God. But then-the Everton fans reacted, the City fans reacted-and I left at that point. I hold that tit Neville entirely responsible for inflaming and provoking what was an already tense situation. He's a very lucky boy and needs to take a look at himself. It could have been catastrophic for both him and us. I hope it was all worth the "see what I did like you bruv" 'phone call to chuckle no.1. VIDEO: https://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=44141126259&ref=nf

| Scotland: Bill to crack down on hooligans - 19/12/2008
Source: Harborough Mail (Associated Press)
New measures to crack down on football hooligans have been welcomed in Scotland. The Policing and Crime Bill will also give law enforcement agencies further powers to tackle organised crime and improve security at airports.
The legislation, which was introduced in the House of Commons, includes measures to ensure that football banning orders imposed in England and Wales are recognised and enforceable in Scotland.
The orders can ban hooligans from games and associated flashpoints across the UK and abroad for up to 10 years.
Scottish Secretary Jim Murphy said: "Scots will be safer from the threat of international crime and better protected by Scotland's own law enforcement agencies as a result of these measures.
"The ability to extend football banning orders issued in England and Wales to Scotland will be a vital extra tool in helping our police forces tackle this deplorable behaviour on a cross-border basis."

| UEFA fines Slavia Prague for fans behavior - 18/12/2008
Source: Associated Press
Slavia Prague was fined by UEFA for crowd behavior during the team's UEFA Cup match against Hamburg, and its coach Karel Jarolim was banned from sitting on the bench for three matches in UEFA competitions.
Slavia was fined 15,000 ($21,900) because its fans threw objects, including plastic bottles and cigarette lighters, at the Dec. 4 match in Prague, the club said Thursday.
Jarolim was sent to the stands by referee Selcuk Dereli after protesting Ivica Olic's 30th-minute goal in Hamburg's 2-0 win. Jarolim said he thought Olic was offside. He was initially banned for one game, with UEFA's disciplinary committee issuing its final verdict Thursday.
Slavia was eliminated from the competition, with Hamburg, Aston Villa and Ajax advancing to the round of 32 from Group F.
Slavia plans to introduce a ban on cigarette lighters at its stadium and all drinks at the venue will be sold only in plastic cups as a reaction, Slavia spokesman Ondrej Zlamal said in a statement.

Never saw a police precense like this day in Germany. Arriving in Stuttgart after been seriously checked by the OB, we mobbed up at the Irish pub (Biddy Early's) with about 150 toplads. After a few phonecalls we decided to go and look for the Germans ourselves because they didn't move or answer our phonecalls. Arriving in front off their pub only 10 Germans were present so we didn't attack but provoked a little bit and moved on in direction of the stadium.........................BUT OB thought otherwhise: they arrested 135 people (old guys with sons, scarfers, ultras and 40lads) this was the beginning off a terrible night. 18 oclock arrested 1oclock at night released!
