| Sections of Napoli stadium closed after trouble - 08/09/2008
Source : Reuters
Some sections of Napoli's San Paolo stadium will be closed until the end of October after violence marred their opening Serie A match at AS Roma, the Italian Soccer League said.
Interior Minister Roberto Maroni had already banned the Naples club's fans from travelling to away games all season following the trouble on Aug. 31, in which a train was ransacked causing half a million euros in damage.
The end stands, or 'curve', were being closed because they are the parts of the stadium usually frequented by the fans who caused the trouble, sporting judge Gianpaolo Tosel said in a statement on the league's website.

| German keeper remains out of action after firecracker attack - 08/09/2008
Source : DPA
Rapid Vienna goalkeeper Georg Koch continues to be sidelined after a fire-cracker attack, his club said Monday. "He is not worse, but not really any better either. He can't think of training at this time," a Rapid official said after the 36-year- old underwent further medical examinations.
The German goalkeeper is still suffering from nausea and balance- problems and earlier did not rule out ending his career.
Koch was injured during a Vienna derby between Rapid and Austria when a firecracker thrown from the Austria fan-block exploded near him.

| Rival football fans in court for clash - 09/09/2008
Source : Derby Evening Telegraph
TODAY is D-Day for these 10 men who were caught up in a violent clash involving Nottingham Forest fans in Derby. They could be banned from football matches when they are sentenced for their parts in a brawl that involved punches, a chair and a glass being thrown. The fight began after six Nottingham Forest fans, who were on their way to an away game at Port Vale, stopped off at Derby railway station and visited the nearby Waterfall pub. Also involved were four men in the pub – all believed to be Derby County supporters. The 10 were arrested after the confrontation, which took place at the entrance of the bar and was recorded on the pub's CCTV cameras. Judge John Burgess watched the footage 10 times at Derby Crown Court yesterday. The Forest fans were Neil King, 40, of Manthorpe Crescent, Nottingham; Luke Smith, 23, of Chandos Street, Nottingham; Paul Wilmot, 45, of Kingsley Drive, Nottingham; Nigel Straw, 43, of Bobbersmill, Nottingham; Nicky Spencer, 24, of Blaise Close, Nottingham; and Arthur Preston, 47, of Sough Road, South Normanton. In the pub, in Railway Terrace, were Simon Marshment, 31, of Shakespeare Road, Burton; Dominic Humphrey, 23, of Wilmot Street, Heanor; Paul Gratton, 32, of Waterford Drive, Chaddesden; and James Bell, 23, of Denton Road, Burton. The footage showed Spencer at the front of his group walking to the pub, where Gratton was sat on the steps having a cigarette. Spencer threw a punch at Gratton, who kicked back in return and then threw his glass out on to the street. Smith then lobbed a sign into the pub. The clash also included a chair being thrown out of the pub by Bell and back in by Wilmot. Smith, Wilmot, Spencer, Humphrey, Gratton and Bell have admitted affray. King, Straw, Marshment and Preston admit threatening behaviour. The men face the possibility of banning orders, which could prevent them from attending football matches. But their barristers were expected to argue today that the violence on September 15 last year was not premeditated or related to football. Keith Raynor, prosecuting, said: "The Crown's case is that the only realistic inference from circumstances is there is an element of premeditation." He said that some of them were known to police for trouble at football games. Mr Raynor said the Crown did not accept that the Forest fans were just stopping off for a quiet drink at The Merry Widows, which is opposite the Waterfall. He said that, in the CCTV footage, the group could be seen walking straight from the station to the Waterfall.

| Croatia - England - 10/09/2008Source : Mail + SkyNews 'Heskey Monkey Hoots In Croatia' The Football Association have asked Fifa to launch a probe into alleged racial abuse towards England striker Emile Heskey from Croatia fans. The Wigan forward was in the starting 11 during his national team's 4-1 World Cup qualifying win over the Croats. But England's victory was marred by alleged racist hoots directed at the player. Monkey chants emanated from a section of the ground after Heskey was booked in the second half of the match and the striker confirmed that he had heard them. football's world governing body, has the power to impose sanctions on the Croatian federation should the conduct of some of their fans be found to be racist. An FA spokesman said: "It is unacceptable for anyone to be subjected to racial abuse and we will be asking Fifa to investigate this. "The FA and England team are determined to do all they can to eradicate any form of racism from football and society." Croatia were given a small fine during Euro 2008 for racist abuse from their fans during a game against Turkey. They could escape a heavy punishment this time as the chants were made by a small section of the crowd in Zagreb. Eighty-three football fans, mainly Croatian, were detained before, during and after the match, while three people were seriously injured, police said.Among those arrested for disturbing public order and being under the influence of alcohol were four English fans. The remaining were all Croats and a German national. *************************** Source : index.hr 83 supporters were arrested, 78 from Croatia and 4 from England. | |

| Police World Cup football operation is success - 11/09/2008
Source : Avon and Somerset Constabulary
Police have reported highly a successful operation at Bristol International Airport for England's two away World Cup qualifying matches with no arrests.
More than 200 people travelled through the airport to support the national side in matches against Andorra (in Barcelona) and Croatia in their quest to reach the finals in South Africa in 2010.
Just three people were stopped by officers for further enquiries. They were then allowed to continue on their journey.
Football Intelligence Desk Officer Roger Thayer confirmed: "It was a highly successful operation building on well-rehearsed plans, aiming to provide reassurance to genuine fans travelling to support their national team.
"We currently have 55 football banning orders operating in the police force area and our operation ensured that those subject to them surrendered their passports and did not travel abroad when the England games were being played.
"In addition to England fans travelling from Bristol International Airport, there were also fans supporting Wales and Scotland. The whole operation passed without incident and fans were good humoured," explained Roger.
The operations at BIA form part of a national ports operation to ensure that fans who are subject to football banning orders do not try to leave the country.
The police work in partnership with BIA other police forces to ensure a physical presence at the airport helping to reassure bona fide fans and other travellers flying from the airport.
Avon and Somerset police's football intelligence desk officer Roger Thayer said: "The operation is intended to back up the targeting of those on football banning orders, seeking to identify and prevent those from travelling who it is believed may cause violence and disorder in the host cities for games or where intelligence has highlighted possible locations for potential disorder."
"Lists of those with a football banning order who fail to surrender their passports are circulated by the United Kingdom Football Policing Unit. Police staff airports and seaports to spot those in receipt of a banning order who try to leave the country and ensure that they are detained," confirmed the football intelligence desk officer.
Planning now turns to England's next two away games in Minsk and Berlin during the next eight weeks.
On October 15 England play Belarus, followed by an away match against Germany in Berlin on November 19.
A football banning order prevents attendance at any regulated match for a period of between three and five years – if the individual is not subjected to a custodial sentence. For those who are imprisoned the banning order extends to a period of between six and 10 years.
Other conditions requested on a FBO may include exclusion zones around stadia before and after home fixtures, a day-long ban on travel to towns and cities, where away matches are being played.
Additionally, people arrested as part of a football-related incident, which could include an assault during a televised football game in a pub may also become subject to a FBO application," he said.
Avon and Somerset police work closely with football colleagues across the country to identify and build intelligence profiles on known "risk" supporters and those on the fringes. This enables the police to help create a safe and enjoyable environment for those genuinely going to watch football games, both inside and outside the force area.

| Sweden : Hammarby to close main fan section for derby game - 12/09/2008
Source : The Associated Press
Hammarby must close its main supporters' section when its plays crosstown rival Djurgarden in October because of its fans' rowdy behavior during a first-division game last month.
The Swedish Football Association made the decision Friday for the Oct. 20 match in what will be the first time an entire fan section is closed for a Swedish league game.
"In Hammarby's case, we thought a stronger punishment was necessary," said Khennet Tallinger, chairman of the association's disciplinary board.
Hammarby hooligans threw firecrackers at AIK goalkeeper Tomi Maanoja on Aug. 25 at Rasunda Stadium after AIK was awarded a controversial penalty. The match was temporarily stopped.
AIK fans also used firecrackers and other pyrotechnics. The club was fined 35,000 kronor (€3,700).
Hammarby's fans have previously been involved in several incidents.

| Hooligans attack Crvena Zvezda players' cars - 12/09/2008
Source : Soccerway
Players of Serbian side Crvena Zvezda had their cars attacked by a group of local hooligans, who supposedly wanted to express their opinion on the club's recent results.
The players were in a meeting with new coach Cedomir Janevski at Belgrade's Marakana stadium, when the group managed to find their way into the car park, where they seriously damaged no less than twenty cars.
Guards, present at the car park, reportedly stood no chance against the thirty or so hooligans.
Cvrena Zvezda, one of Europe's most successful clubs in the late eighties, were thrown out of the UEFA Cup by Cypriot side APOEL Nicosia.
In the Serbian league, Crvena are currently in twelfth and last position after two defeats and a draw.

Congo football riot kills 13 people
Thirteen people were killed and 35 injured in a riot at a football match in eastern Congo sparked by accusations that a player was using witchcraft, a U.N.-funded radio station reported Monday.
Most of the victims were between the ages of 11 and 16, Radio Okapi said. They suffocated to death during the violence at the local friendly match Sunday in Butembo in North Kivu province.
Radio Okapi said police tried to control the violence at Matokeo stadium by firing guns into the air to protect their commander, who was hit in the head and wounded by rioting fans.
The two local clubs involved were Socozaki and Nyuki System, the radio station said.
Monday morning, about a 100 teenagers marched through Butembo's dirt streets to express their outrage and the regional governor paid a visit to the hospital.
North Kivu has been the epicenter of violence between Congo's army and rebels over the last year which has displaced hundreds of thousands of people.

| Football thug banned for attack on Saints fan - 15/09/2008
Source : Southern Daily Echo
A FOOTBALL thug has been banned from attending football matches after he kicked and punched a Saints fan during a mass brawl.
Craig O’Brien was with fellow Bristol City fans when he became embroiled in a fight with another group from Southampton on Above Bar Street.
During the brawl, on April 5 this year, he was spotted lashing out at a Southampton supporter as he lay on the ground.
Now he has been ordered not to travel to home or away games and has been told to carry out unpaid work after admitting affray.
Southampton Crown Court heard how a police officer saw the 24-year-old launch the assault in the run up to a game at St Mary’s.
The court was told how he kicked and punched a man before fleeing when officers intervened.
O’Brien, who lives in Bristol, was arrested and found to be heavily intoxicated with drink.
In mitigation, the court heard how O’Brien had not started the fight, which involved 30 people, and that he was not known to police as a hooligan.
Judge Peter Halls QC gave him a Football Banning Order, which prevents him travelling on the rail network or entering specific areas of Bristol on match days. He was also told to do 150 hours of community service.
