More arrests after Coventry football hooligan riot - 28/05/2008

Source : Coventry Telegraph

A TOTAL of 28 football hooligans have now been charged following a massive street fight which left families fleeing for safety in a Coventry suburb.

Up to 100 rival football fans from Coventry and Leicester clashed in Earlsdon Avenue North on February 23 before their match at the Ricoh Arena.

Police descended on the usually quiet area to contain the violence and a total of ten men were arrested at the scene. These men have since been charged.

Following the violence a post match inquiry was launched by police officers based at Chace Avenue police station.

For two months officers have been trawling through CCTV footage of the violence to identify those involved in the clashes.

As the Telegraph revealed last week, the investigation culminated in Operation Net News and a series of dawn raids across Coventry and Leicester last Wednesday when a further 18 men were arrested.

Of the 28 men that have now been charged in total, 20 are from Leicester and eight are from Coventry.

One man remains on bail and a further man has handed himself into Chace Avenue police station after seeing his photograph in the Telegraph.

Detective Inspector Bob Pettipher, of Chace Avenue police station, explained that more arrests and charges were expected.

He said: "This is the sort of numbers we wanted. We still have inquiries that are on-going and we anticipate the figures rising.

"We are still waiting for information from the public and anyone who has information is asked to contact the Operation Net News incident room."

A STANMORE pub had to be closed down after fighting broke out between rampaging football fans.

Police were called to the Man in the Moon pub, in Buckingham Parade, when rival Stockport and Rochdale fans clashed just around 1.10pm yesterday.

Up to 100 fans were involved in the fight and one man was arrested and issued with a fixed penalty notice.

Swiss ready for Euro-2008 hooligans - 27/05/2008

Source : RussiaToday

The Swiss city of Basel is busy getting ready for an influx of football fans for Euro-2008. And law enforcers are taking no chances. With legendary national meticulousness, they have prepared a jail especially for hooligans, reports Basler Zeitung newspaper.

The prison, located in a reconstructed 19th century building, can hold up to 350 troublemakers.

But the hosts have made sure conditions won’t be too tough. Although inmates will not be allowed to leave, they will be relatively comfortable.

Swiss Army personnel will take on the guarding duties along with police officers.

The ancient prison will be demolished to make way for a hospital after the championship is over.

Vietnam : Song Lam Nghe An - Haiphong Cement - 26/05/2008

Source : AFP

One dead, 10 hurt in Vietnam football clash

One man died and at least 10 people were wounded in clashes between hundreds of football fans in Vietnam, state media reported Tuesday, in the most serious in a spate of similar incidents.

The violence erupted in the central city of Vinh on Sunday after a 1-1 draw between local V-League team Song Lam Nghe An (SLNA) and visitors Haiphong Cement, a team from Vietnam's largest northern port city.

Fighting broke out after Haiphong scored an equaliser three minutes from time, which the 600 visiting Haiphong fans noisily celebrated with firecrackers, reported the state-run Vietnam News daily.

The hooligans then started to hurl bricks and bottles at each other.

"The brawl quickly turned into a huge battle, with most fans involved using bricks, sticks and whatever else was lying around to fight against each other," said the newspaper.

The Haiphong fans, heavily outnumbered, were escorted from the stadium after about 90 minutes under police guard, and placed onto their fleet of buses, reported another newspaper, the Thanh Nien daily.

As the buses, many with broken windows, sped out of town, one hit a fan of the home team, 23-year-old Ha Huy Thanh, who was then run over by a second vehicle and pronounced dead at a local hospital, the report said.

"This could be one of the saddest and most shameful moments in our football history," the head of the V-League organising board, Duong Nghiep Khoi, was quoted as saying by the Vietnam News.

Police, heavily outnumbered during the melee, made no arrests but were this week reviewing video footage to look for ring leaders, state media said.

Vinh Stadium was also rocked by violence that left 10 people wounded in mid-April when local supporters clashed with fans of Hanoi-based The Cong following a 2-2 draw and pelted their fleeing bus with bricks and bottles.

Haiphong and SLNA fans also clashed in February with each other and with police at a neutral venue in northern Nam Dinh province.

Violence erupts at Vinh Stadium again

The 18th round of V-League play Sunday saw another violent fracas break out at Vinh Stadium involving supporters of host Song Lam Nghe An (SLNA) and visitor Hai Phong.

The incident broke out just a month after a melee occurred between aggressive fans in the same stadium in Nghe An province that sent four people to the hospital.

Witnesses reported around ten people were injured as fans of both sides threw bottles, sticks and other objects at each other right after the match ended in a 1-1 tie.

Despite intervention from stadium security forces, a large crowd of fans of the home team surrounded the exit gates of the stadium, cordoning off Hai Phong fans inside for nearly ninety minutes.

The atmosphere of the game grew tense beginning in the first half when SLNA opened the scoring from a penalty shot.

SLNA striker Dac Khanh was fouled in the box by goalkeeper Tuan Diep and referee Tran Khanh Hung awarded SLNA a penalty shot that Huy Hoang successfully converted.

Players from both teams stepped up their intensity after that foul and charged up the level of play.

The atmosphere reached a climax when Duc Thang tied the game at the 87th minute and Hai Phong fans lit up colorful fireworks to celebrate the goal.

Feeling provoked, some SLNA fans responded belligerently bythrowing objects towards the visiting fans.

Earlier in the 13th round, SLNA fans had sparked similar hostility in the match against The Cong club after both sides drew 2-2.

One killed in football fan clash

An SLNA fan died following a car crash after fans of both sides clashed in Vinh Stadium on Sunday
A football fan of Vietnam’s top-flight V-League club Song Lam Nghe An (SLNA) lost his life Sunday after he was hit by a bus carrying fans of the other team, Hai Phong, on its way to escape chase after a stadium melee.

Ten others were also injured and hospitalized after the fight, which erupted right after the end of the match of the two teams, which ended in a 1-1.

After being surrounded for almost 90 minutes inside the stadium by fan of the host team SLNA, Hai Phong fans were finally escorted by policemen to get aboard the bus to leave Vinh Stadium.

Running fast on the way home for fear of possible attacks by aggressive SLNA fans, the Hai Phong team bus hit a man who was identified as a fan of SLNA, named Ha Huy Thanh, 23 years old, said Trung Anh, a member of the fan club of SLNA, Monday.

Thanh was hit by the bus and then run over by a different vehicle, according to Trung Anh.

The Sunday melee was the second in Vinh Stadium within two months.

Earlier on April 14, fans of SLNA had also clashed with fans of The Cong after the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

Nguyen Hai Huong, head of the disciplinary department of the Vietnam Football Federation, stated Monday he would impose a strict penalty against SLNA and the stadium.

Football crowd violence: Isn’t the VFF responsible?

More violence broke out at Vinh Stadium last Sunday between supporters of host Song Lam Nghe An and visitors Hai Phong, but the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) refused to accept responsibility.

Poor handling by the stadium operators saw a similar brawl between aggressive home supporters and visitors The Cong last month, which sent four people to hospital.

The VFF had then merely slapped the operators on the wrist, fining the stadium VND20 million (US$1,233) and banning Nghe An from playing the next two matches at home.

The stadium operators, however, did not learn from that experience, and the recent match saw just 120 policemen watching over 10,000 hostile spectators.

After the match, the VFF’s game supervisor showed a cavalier attitude, blaming the operators for the violent incident.

A VFF official even said the violence hadn’t been as bad as last month’s.

It’s time for the VFF to start keeping a closer eye on football hooligans.

It could start by banning the hooligans who claim to be fans of Hai Phong, Song Lam Nghe An, Nam Dinh, The Cong and Thanh Hoa, from attending their teams’ matches.

Czech Republic : Interior Ministry plans new system to crack down on football hooligans - 26/05/2008

Source : Radio Praha

Vandalism and football hooliganism that has become an increasing problem for both the authorities and people living in the vicinity of football stadiums. The interior ministry has now announced strict new measures to bring the problem under control. Football hooliganism continues to be a major drain on police resources as well as a safety threat.

The 2007/2008 season was not the worst in Czech club football history, but there were at least two inglorious incidents that won’t soon be forgotten, among them a clash between hardcore fans and police during a recent Sparta-Slavia derby. Fans and police in riot gear fought, fires were set, and seats were ripped out of their moorings all leading to millions of crowns in damages. Now, the interior ministry has said “enough is enough” and is planning, come next season, things will be different.
A long-awaited proposal sent to clubs this week outlines plans for tracking the activities of known and repeat offenders. Ultimately, like in Great Britain, the worst of rowdies could see club bans. Basically, repeat offenders will be cut out of the picture and prevented from causing future incidents. The cornerstone of the plan is for clubs and stadiums to rely on closed-circuit TV cameras to monitor hooligans’ activities, forming a database. That information would then be shared between clubs, making it easier to pinpoint problems, keep track of incidents, and above all keep track of repeat and dangerous offenders. That would make it easier to take legal action and to implement bans. It needs to be stressed that the Office for the Protection of Personal Data was consulted closely on the project – the office had a number of concerns regarding the tracking of information which needed to be agreed on, among them, that cameras will not analyse or target individuals on the basis of biometric information.

Ministry officials have said that bans are the best form of prevention and suggested that should lead to a drop in incidents. There are other smaller measures which the ministry hopes to see implemented to make stadiums safer. Among them are new fences, a stricter separation of opposing fans, and the insurance of fully separate emergency exits. In the future they may also rely, in special cases, the assembly of a court of law right on the premises, to charge and try serious offenders on the spot. Along with an existing database, that could be a significant deterrent. Anyone considering ripping out a seat and throwing it into the stands, or attacking other fans, or police, might now think twice.

Thousands of German cops heading to Euro 2008 - 26/05/2008

Source :: http://www.thelocal.de

Up to 1,700 German police officers will head to the European football championship next month to help out their colleagues in host nations Switzerland and Austria, the German Interior Ministry announced on Monday.

A ministry spokesman said Germany had committed to provide the police support in agreements with Swiss and Austrian officials, but the actual number of officers sent to each country will depend on the situation in various cities where Euro matches will be held.

The head of Germany’s police union, Rainer Wendt, said he wasn’t worried about German police being put into difficult situations.

“That’s because our officers can both deescalate and break things up if necessary,” Wendt said, adding that German authorities were already working “to take hooligans and problem makers out of circulation.”

Most of the officers heading to the football tournament – which kicks off in the Alpine nations on June 7 – are specialists in dealing with potentially violent fans and keeping problems from escalating, according to the German news agency DDP. The officers have already been busy trying to pinpoint hooligans in several German states ahead of the European Championship.

In Lower Saxony alone, police have addressed 373 potential problemakers, said ministry spokesman Michael Knaps. At least 18 hooligans have been told to register with their hometown authorities during the three-week football tournament. Six will even be required to turn in their passports and ID cards to keep them from leaving the country.

Germany’s most populous state, North Rhine-Westphalia, will send some 400 police officers to the first-round matches in Klagenfurt and Innsbruck. The German national team will meet the Polish and Croatian sides in Klagenfurt, setting up potentially violent clashes with hooligans from both countries.

“The North Rhine-Westphalia police have the utmost experience for football deployments,” said the state’s Interior Minister Ingo Wolf.

Source : Elkhabar

70 policemen injured, 150 arrested among demonstrators and dozens of businesses destroyed in Oran.

The city of Oran was totally paralysed yesterday and terror swept citizens, when supporters of Mouloudia of Oran have translated their anger in the streets after their team’s defeat and degradation to the 2nd division in the first time in its history.

The acts of violence and vandalism began in the early hours of the morning in several areas of the city, as the districts of Sidi El Bachir, El Hamri, El Othmania, the City of Beaver, El Mekri, the new city, Saint-Antoine, Ibn Sina and downtown, then the merchants and citizens were compelled to close shop and move away their vehicle, as well as some public and private enterprises have closed their doors. However, many businesses have been destroyed, starting with the warehouse of the company El Riad located in the Boulevard des Martyrs neighbourhood of El Hamri, stronghold of Mouloudia who was attacked at night the day before yesterday.
Traffic has also been cut in several places with barricades and burned tires. In addition, all public transport networks have suspended their activities, which prevented a large number of workers to join their jobs.
The police and elements of anti-riot forces have used dogs and tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.
El Khabar has learned from reliable sources that the incidents have caused 70 wounded among the police. A series of arrests was recorded among the demonstrators, who exceeded, according to these sources, 150 people.

Blame not yet laid for football fracas - 30/05/2008

Source : Thanh Nien Daily

Two local football clubs have blamed each other for a violent riot at a match of Vietnam’s top-flight V-League last Sunday that put five people in the hospital.

The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) convened a meeting Wednesday with representatives from Song Lam Nghe An (SLNA) and Hai Phong after fans supporting both clubs launched vicious attacks against each other when last Sunday’s game ended in a 1-1 stalemate.

Fans hurled bottles and rocks at the opposition, taking the riot to the field with fans clubbing each other with sticks.

The brawl reportedly erupted after fans shot fireworks at each other.

The meeting was tense and both sides blamed each other, with neither admitting any fault or responsibility for the fight, said Nguyen Lan Trung, director of VFF’s information department.

“The incident occurred after some Hai Phong hooligans lit firecrackers,” said SLNA managing director Ho Van Chiem, rejecting Hai Phong’s denial of culpability.

Vietnam has seen a slew of violent football riots over the last several years.

For the Hai Phong side, club managing director Do Dai Duong also denied blame: “Hai Phong fans only picked up objects after SLNA supporters had thrown them. It was a reaction to the attack.”

Duong blamed the stadium’s organizing committee, whom he said was responsible for failing to stop fans from rushing the field.

He suggested the V-League Organizing Committee suspend play at Vinh Stadium until a thorough safety check had been conducted.

Vinh Stadium is SNLA’s home turf.

VFF says

“Hai Phong failed to control its fans. The stadium failed to hire enough policemen to cope with the real number of attendees, which was over 800 instead of only 300 aspre-registration figures showed,” said Nguyen Lan Trung from the VFF.

VFF also criticized Vinh Stadium staff and managers, whom they said had failed to respond quickly enough to the incident.

The group said stadium employees allowed those who had brought the fireworks to escape.

The VFF representative concluded the meeting by saying that the event was not as big a deal as the media had made it out to be.

The football governing body will meet this weekend to draw up punishment for all those involved.

Radomiak Radom - Hutnik Warszawa - 29/05/2008

Source : Mathaba.Net

Renewed riots hit Polish football stadiums

Polish football stadiums became the scene of renewed bloody riots over the past day, media reports said Thursday.

A 12-year-old boy was critically injured Wednesday evening during hooligan clashes in Warsaw as he was hit by a stone thrown by 17-year teenager.

The victim was rushed to a hospital where he underwent a surgery on his head.

Police arrested at least seven hooligans who pelted fans of the opposing team with stones following the match between football clubs Radomiak Radom and Hutnik Warszawa.

A police car was completely destroyed in the hooligan clashes.

Meanwhile, violence broke also out at football game in the eastern Polish town of Bilgoraj as hooligans stormed onto the pitch and demolished the cabin of the reserve players.

Some 41 people were arrested during the football riots.

Poland which is to co-host the 2012 European Cup with Ukraine, is facing massive problem with hooliganism and football corruption.

Polish racist groups have also used football matches to recruit supporters.

Polish football had been rocked by a series of corruption affairs over the past three years.

As part of a major investigative probe some 120 people, among them sports officials, referees, coaches and players had been arrested since 2005 for using bribes to manipulate the outcome of football games.

A violent clash between Venezuelan football fans and police has left one man dead and dozens injured.

Fire department official Giovanny Moreno says the violence erupted outside a stadium in the western city of San Cristobal.

Moreno says hundreds of fans who were waiting to buy tickets for Saturday's second leg of the league final between Caracas FC and Deportivo Tachira fought with police and National Guard troops.

He says a 45-year-old man died and about 45-50 people were injured this morning when the groups traded blows amid hurled rocks and bottles.

Lithuania – Estonia - 31/05/2008

Source: http://www.lff.lv/en/news/2008/05/03/

New Jurmala city stadium was left with 100 broken seats today and other damage was done to the construction of the stadium on Saturday, 31 May after the Lithuanian – Estonian national team Baltic Cup football match by both team supporters.

Disorder started shortly after Lithuania scored the only goal on 89 minute - three Estonian supporters run on the pitch. Then Lithuanian football fans started jumping on the seats of the stadium, what Latvian police tried to stop, but more seats were ripped off and thrown to the policemen. Fortunately none of them was seriously injured.

Later on the parking lot fans continued arguing between each other and with the police, what ended with sound guns being used and few of the persons helded by the police in the police bus.

Lithuanian fan buses were first escorted out of the stadium, then the Estonian fans. None were arrested.

Losses will be calculated and the Estonian and Lithuanian Football federations agreed to compensate them.

Press conference was held immediately after the incident and Latvian Football Federation commerce – director and responsible for the stadium security Vladimirs Zhuks commented the situation. Also president of Estonian Football Federation Aivar Pohlak participated in the press conference what can be heard in the audio record attached (Russian language).

Press conference will be held also tomorrow – 1 June at the Skonto stadium at 13:00 with the newest information.

Czech Republic: Interior Ministry plans new system to crack down on football hooligans - 26/05/2008

Source: http://www.radio.cz/
