| Coventry City football hooligan jailed - 23/05/2008
Source : Coventry Telegraph
A SKY BLUES supporter has been jailed for a year after his involvement in a violent clash which terrified shoppers at the Arena Park centre.
The mob violence erupted after Coventry's FA Cup tie with Millwall at the nearby Ricoh stadium on January 26.
James Kavanagh of Hen Lane, Holbrooks, Coventry, pleaded guilty to affray. He was jailed and banned from going to any football matches for the next eight years.
He was one of a crowd of fans whose violent behaviour terrified people out Saturday afternoon shopping at the centre.
Kavanagh, aged 42, a married man with children, who has 14 previous convictions including grievous bodily harm and wounding, appeared at Coventry Crown Court yesterday.
Finuala Sheridan, prosecuting, said Kavanagh was clearly a protagonist with other men looking at him for guidance and following his command.
She said that as well as frightening members of the public, including a young mum with a baby who had to shelter in her locked car, the mob also attacked police officers trying to control them.
"Officers were under attack from both sides.
There were men throwing bricks, stones and car wing mirrors and any other items they could get hold of," she said.
Members of the crowd then started grabbing shopping trolleys and Kavanagh grabbed one and "pushed it with some force" at an officer.
Kavanagh was later arrested outside Marks & Spencer and he apologised to the police officer for the incident with the trolley.
He said in interview he was unaware of the distress his behaviour had caused to people.
Blondel Thompson, in mitigation, said Kavanagh was violent only after football matches. She said he was a completely different person away from the sport and was a good son to his parents.
She said: "He has said: 'I've caused distress to my wife and family for some period of time. It has to stop. I don't wish to keep going back into custody. It's time I looked after my family.
'I don't want my children to follow in my footsteps'."
Judge Christopher Hodson said Kavanagh had been encouraging the mob and posed a significant risk of causing members of the public serious harm.
The court heard that Kavanagh was still on licence for a previous offence of grievous bodily harm when he committed the affray.

| Football fans and African youths clash in Brussels - 24/05/2008Source : Reuters More than 200 Anderlecht football fans and youths of African origin clashed on Friday in fighting organised on the Internet which left police officers injured and led to widespread vandalism, a police spokesman said. "We have made a number of arrests, but we are so busy at the moment, we will have to wait until the trouble is over before we can give out any more information," the spokesman said. "A number of our police officers have been injured. We don't know how seriously yet." Television pictures showed police using tear gas and water cannon to defend themselves from a barrage of stones and bottles during the clashes near Anderlecht's stadium in Brussels. The rioting, which forced the closure of four nearby metro stations, began at around 6 p.m. British time and lasted for four hours before police eventually gained control. Police said the violence had been organised through a Web site calling for an "attack on all white fans of football club Anderlecht". It was prompted by a confrontation between Anderlecht fans and a group of youths of north African origin after Anderlecht's Belgian cup final victory last Sunday. ************************************************************* Source : The Associated Press Nearly 200 people detained by Belgian police after rioting in BrusselsPolice have detained nearly 200 youths after rioting in Brussels sparked by a simmering dispute between rival groups after a soccer match. Police spokesman Gerald Noon says 26 people, including 14 police officers, were injured in the clashes late Friday that officers believe were prearranged by troublemakers over the Internet. Noon says the violence stemmed from a confrontation last weekend between North African youths and fans of Anderlecht football club after it won the Belgian Cup Final. He told VRT radio Saturday that further arrests could follow after investigators analyze camera footage to try to identify troublemakers. | |

| Poland: Motor Lublin - Arka Gdynia 24/05/2008Source: Own On the way to game, about 80 Arka Gdynia lads (together with 65 of Lech Poznan, 25 KSZO Ostrowiec, and 3 Gwardia Koszalin) met Stal Stalowa Wola (plus 20 of Rakow Czestochowa and some Resovia probably, finally about 80 lads) going to their game in Gdansk. Both sides stopped some distance beetwen them, and went out from buses. Both sides were ready, so there was a fight. But very short, casue Stal had no chance. There could be another fight by Arka, this time on the way back to home. This time with Legia Warszawa (probably 35 cars, but thats not sure). But this time OB was on top, and shoot to Legia with plastic bullets. So no off beetwen both sides. On the game, nothing major happend. Some pics of game: Motor lads near visitors gates: Here you can see Motor lads at the top of screen, and few Arka youth fans, on the bottom (rest of Arka was dealing with OB, after fight with Stal) And Motor on the sector: | |

| Government calls for UEFA hooligan ban - 25/05/2008
Source : stv.
The Scottish government is pressing Westminster to ensure football hooligans involved in violence at the UEFA Cup final in Manchester are banned from matches in Scotland. At the moment, bans imposed in Scotland stop people attending games throughout the UK, but those imposed in England do not apply north of the border.
Police made 42 arrests in Manchester last week as Rangers supporters and riot police fought running battles.
When a big screen showing the game broke down, frustration boiled over into shocking scenes.
But a legal loophole means the hooligans detained during the violence could still be free to attend games in Scotland.
Whilst Football Banning Orders imposed here prevent trouble makers attending matches anywhere in the UK, the English equivalent doesn't apply north of the border.
The Scottish Government has been working with the Home Office in an attempt to close the loophole.
But a lack of progress has prompted Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill to write to the Home Secretary demanding urgent action.
Mr MacAskill says steps must be taken so those responsible for the trouble in Manchester are punished and that anyone given a banning order in England is also excluded from Scottish football grounds.
A total of 20 Football Banning Orders have been issued in Scotland since 2006, when the legislation came into force.
The Scottish Government is currently liaising with the legal system and police to monitor their implementation.

| Bosnian ultras against "Bosnian football federation" - 23/05/2008Source : Mail Bosnian Football federation is probably the most corumped in Europe. Bosnain support army "BH Fanaticos" last years try to make changes in this organisation, by writeing messages on matches, making pyros.. but all that was for nothing. Today was orgnasied protest by Bhf and club groups : "The Maniacs (zeljeznicar)" , "Horde Zla (sarajevo)", "Robijasi (zenica)" and more others... About 1000 ultras were in front of "football federation" building sing songs against them, and after 40 minutes peacefull protest, they started to throw flares,stones,bottles... on police and building. Well organised police attacked ultras with bats and dogs... And distance them to secure building. About 50 ultras are arrested, 6 cops injured, and lot of "other people". This is first time on bosnian scene that groups made contract of "non attakcing each other" in same battle. "Bosnian football federation = MAFIA" !!! | |

| Riot fans face bans in England only - 26/05/2008
Source : Glasgow Evening Times HOOLIGAN fans convicted over street battles during Rangers Uefa Cup final in Manchester won't be banned from going to games in Scotland.
A legal loophole means the thugs who fought police will only kept out of football matches in England.
Now Scotland's Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill has been in contact with the Westminster Government to try to change the rules.
advertisementHe said: "Together with the police on both sides of the border we must protect the well-behaved football supporters whose good name has been tarnished."
Trouble flared after fans gathered in the centre of Manchester to watch a live broadcast of the Zenit St Petersburg-Rangers final on a giant screen.
Transmission problems meant no pictures could be seen and supporters began throwing bottles.
Minutes later they clashed with riot police during running street battles which ended with 42 arrests.
Those convicted are expected to have football banning orders imposed.
Orders imposed in Scotland prevent convicted fans from attending any UK match but similar orders imposed by the courts in Manchester will not apply in Scotland.
New legislation is planned by Westminster which would block the loophole but government ministers in Scotland are concerned at the slow progress being made.
Mr MacAskill has now written to Home Secretary Jacqui Smith to demand she takes urgent action.
Rangers are furious that their supporters are being blamed. The club claims that thugs with no known history of following Rangers were responsible for the riots and said they'd do all they could to find those responsible.
