Thirty-three people charged for soccer violence in Sweden - 18/12/2006

Source : AP

Thirty-three people were charged Monday with rioting during two soccer matches in the Swedish league.

Twenty-nine of the suspected hooligans were charged after fighting at a derby between Stockholm rivals AIK and Hammarby in October 2004.

The match was interrupted for 45 minutes as AIK fans clashed with police officers who stopped them from going on the field.

Ten people, including six of the those charged in the Stockholm derby, were charged with assault due to a brawl at a game between AIK and GAIS of Goteborg in June 2005.

The suspects ranged in age between 17 and 40.

Prosecutor Ann-Marie Larsson said it had taken police a long time to investigate surveillance camera footage from the matches and identify the suspects.

Spain: 4 dead, 37 injured after bus carrying Recreativo Huelva fans crashes - 19/12/2006

Source : Herald Tribune

Four people were killed Wednesday when a bus carrying fans of Spanish first division club Recreativo Huelva to a league match with Real Madrid collided with a truck.

Another 37 were injured in the accident early in the morning on the A49 highway in Chucena, in the southern province of Huelva, the private Europa Press news agency said.

Three men, including the bus driver, and one woman were killed. Fifteen passengers were seriously hurt, while 22 have minor injuries, the agency said.

Recreativo Huelva has contacted Madrid and the Spanish Football League requesting the postponement of Wednesday's game, the teams' last of 2006.

Madrid offered its condolences in a statement on its Web site and said it would accept the Football League's decision on whether the game should go ahead.

PITTODRIE FANS FACE COPS BLITZ - 20/12/2006

Source : icScotland

Dons are warned over Ibrox songs

ABERDEEN'S fans have been warned they face instant arrest at Pittodrie on Saturday if they sing songs mocking the Ibrox disaster.

Tensions always run high ahead of what has become Scotland's most explosive fixture and security chiefs from both clubs will meet with Grampian Police tomorrow.

With the Dons two points ahead of Rangers in the battle for second place in the SPL, the weekend clash takes on added significance and thugs intent on inciting trouble will be shown zero tolerance.

The warning comes from Aberdeen's operations manager John Morgan after the SFA revealed plans to set up an anti-hooligan unit with powers to punish clubs for bad behaviour at their grounds.

Games between Aberdeen and Rangers are frequently stained by trouble caused by feuding supporters and the worst flashpoint was in January four years ago.

Riot police with batons and shields were called in for the first time in this country to quell a pitch invasion that halted the match.

Even Dons boss Jimmy Calderwood has issued an appeal urging supporters to forget their bitter rivalry but no one can be sure the messages will get through to the hardcore.

So Morgan will meet with his Ibrox counterpart Laurence McIntyre along with Grampian Police to discuss security measures for the Dons' first sell-out of a competitive match in a decade.

Manning levels will remain the same as for all games involving the Old Firm but Aberdeen have hired extra stewards to clamp down on potential violence.

And high on their agenda will be silencing songs by a section of the Red Army taunting their Glasgow rivals about the Ibrox disaster in which 66 people died.
Morgan said: "We want the fans to be vocal and get behind their team without any of the nonsense songs.

"Songs about the Ibrox disaster are inappropriate.

If you sing about a tragedy where people lost relatives you should be arrested.

"There are morons on both sides and we are trying our best to eradicate the problem. Hopefully, the new legislation will help us do this and I'm waiting for the SFA to tell us what it entails.

"But I have no doubt that songs of this nature will be regarded as an offence.

"In the past four years behaviour at this fixture has improved because the police have been pro-active in nipping trouble in the bud and that will continue to happen. With such a big, important game I just hope everyone comes to enjoy it as is the case with the vast majority."

Calderwood wants Aberdeen's supporters to focus only on backing their side in the proper manner.

He said: "I always hope it's only about football and history shows there have been a lot of great games between the clubs down the years.

"I know the other stuff that people talk about connected with this fixture but those things have gone years and years ago so let's concentrate on sporting matters.

"We want these games to be remembered as being great football matches and not for the nonsense that happened in the past.

"We should be looking forward rather than back and you even see that Rangers and Celtic games don't appear to be as bad as they used to.

"Of course we want all the atmosphere in the world with people shouting and winding up the opposition but only with good humour. We can do without the nasty stuff.

"Our fans were brilliant last weekend in the way they wound up the Hearts supporters. It was done in a funny way and that's how it should always be.

"We are desperate to deliver a victory to make it a special Christmas for our support but I want a very sporting victory without reference to other stuff that might have happened years ago. I urge them to go about things the right way.

"We can win without the other nonsense that surrounds games with Rangers.

"It's up to us to provide the win needed. That won't be easy but I can guarantee that it won't be easy for Rangers either."=

Arsenal ban national team flags - 17/12/2006

Source : BBC SPORT

Arsenal have asked supporters not to bring national flags to matches at the Emirates Stadium.

The move comes after some fans have been upset at the waving of certain countries' colours.

"Arsenal as a club prides itself on being inclusive with respect to all nationalities, cultural and ethnic groups," read a club statement.

"We are asking that only Arsenal flags, without any national emblems, are displayed within the stadium."

The statement added: "We will be implementing this policy with immediate effect."

England West Midlands: £1.1m police soccer bill - 21/12/2006

Source : Express & Star

Football clubs are spending more than £1m to police matches in the West Midlands - a record high figure for the region.

One single game between Aston Villa and Arsenal landed the home club with a bill from West Midlands Police of more than £83,000.

And more than 250 officers were involved in keeping fans from Wolves and Cardiff apart in a game which descended into violence, brought 17 arrests and landed the club with a £30,000 bill.

Aston Villa spent almost £350,000 last season to pay for policing and the amount paid to police by West Midlands clubs exceeded £1.1million in the year.

Senior officers would like the amount to increase even further to reflect the use of scores of police to quell trouble away from the grounds.

The bills, revealed today by the Express & Star using the Freedom of Information Act, have forced small clubs like Walsall to bring in extra stewards for low risk games. Its chief executive Roy Whalley said: “In football the opinion is that police are expensive.”

Albion spokesman John Simpson said: “We sit down with the police at the start of each season and continue to work with them throughout the campaign so that costs are kept to a minimum.”

West Midlands Police spokesman Steve Garey said: “The level of policing at any match is decided by the home club and police who carry out a risk assessment to reach a decision on the category of the fixture and the appropriate policing.

“Factors include the previous history of matches between clubs and current football intelligence.

“Police and football clubs enjoy a good working relationship.”

Wolves, Villa and Blues all refused to comment today.

11 Minstermen fans face disorder charge - 21/12/2006

Source : York Press

A 16-YEAR-OLD boy was among 11 York City fans due to appear in court today charged with football-related disorder.

The 11, who are all from York, were arrested following a match between Oxford United and York City at Oxford's Kassam Stadium on September 30.

After the match, a group of York City fans allegedly caused disorder and damage to the outside of The Priory pub in the city after they were refused entry.

Two people were arrested on the same day and a further eight were arrested in November.

Another was arrested on December 11 following an appeal for information in The Press.

James Edwards, 25, of Swale Avenue, David Ellis, 24, of Poplar Tree Gardens, Matthew Rawcliffe, 22, of Rowntree Avenue, Matthew Fellows, 19, of Windmill Way, Timothy Mercer, 40, of Linton Street, Ian Brown, 30, of Barbican Mews, and Robert Joy, 25, of Bellhouse Way, and the 16-year-old, who can not be named for legal reasons, have all been charged with public order offences.

James Windass, 42, of Grantham Drive, Craig Meers, 32, of Briergate, Haxby, and David Sempers, 34, of Rawcliffe Avenue, have all been charged with criminal damage and public order offences.

They will all appear for a preliminary hearing at Oxford Magistrates Court today.

PC Steve Norman, Football Liaison Officer said: "Thames Valley Police will not tolerate disorder at any football match involving either home or away supporters. We are pursuing other investigations related to events at the York City match and elsewhere and we will seek banning orders on anyone charged and convicted.

Sonko fears Stamford Bridge backlash - 22/12/2006

Source: ITN

Reading defender Ibrahima Sonko is bracing himself for a torrent of abuse from a section of Chelsea fans when the teams meet for the first time since he was involved in a collision with keeper Carlo Cudicini earlier this season.

Sonko revealed that he is "scared" after receiving hate-mail containing threats of violence in the days that followed the incident at Reading's Madejski Stadium in October.

The collision resulted in the Italian stopper being taken to hospital and occurred in the same game that Blues' other goalkeeper, Petr Cech, was also hospitalised after suffering a fractured skull in an earlier incident.

While Chelsea have vowed to take every precaution to ensure the players' safety, Sonko said: "That incident has gone away. But now the next game is coming up.

"I've been scared. You have to take the letters seriously. Some people are nasty and capable of stupid things when it comes to revenge."

Scotland: Father and son among football hooligan accused - 14/12/2006

source: Evening News

A FATHER and son were among 11 suspected football hooligans banned from matches after the latest raids in the Capital.

Sean Welsh, 40, and his son, also Sean, 21, appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday to face charges of breach of the peace outside three city centre pubs following the Edinburgh derby on October 15.

All of the accused are alleged to have been acting in a disorderly manner, shouting, swearing, disrupting traffic, and challenging others to fight.

Also appearing on the charge were Jason Froude, 21, George Sibbald, 36, Ian Taylor, 37, James Hunter, 29, Gerald McCann, 39, Stuart Kidd, 16, Keith Bathgate, 40, Andrew Stanton, 22, and Lee MacKenzie, 25. No plea or declaration was made on their behalf and all 11 were released on bail under special conditions.

The men have all been barred from attending any SPL matches and banned from entering Lothian Road and Fountainbridge.

They were arrested by officers who swooped on 17 households in an operation across Edinburgh and Midlothian in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Fourteen men were originally detained.

A total of 38 people have so far been targeted by the police raids and 33 have been reported to the procurator fiscal.

Up to 60 hooligans fought running battles in Lothian Road and FountainPark following the 2-2 draw at Easter Road.

Peterborough United FC - Lincoln City FC - 23/12/2006

Source : Peterborough Today

Two arrested at Posh derby clash

Two people were arrested during a packed local derby clash at Peterborough United on Saturday.

Police presence was high at the fixture against Lincoln City, which saw about 9,000 fans – one of the biggest crowds of the season – pour into Posh’s London Road stadium on Saturday.

A police spokeswoman said although there had been an increase in the number of officers on duty to curb the potential for disorder, this was nothing unusual for local derbies.

She added: “A number of officers and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) policed the Peterborough Utd vs Lincoln match on Saturday to ensure public order was maintained and that traffic flow in and out of the ground’s car parks was managed.

“The crowd of 9,000 spectators were relatively peaceful, with only two arrests.”

Jason Britton (23), of Willow Avenue in Dogsthorpe, was arrested at the ground and has been charged with common assault. He is due to appear before Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on January 3.

A 39-year-old man from Whittlesey was given a penalty notice for disorder at the game for disorderly behaviour.

Call for Cardiff fans' ban U-turn - 29/12/2006

Source : BBC News

Football supporters have united to call for a lifting of a ban on Cardiff City fans from next month's Championship match at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The ban on 20 January follows crowd trouble which marred two previous games between the sides at Wolves' ground.

The official supporters' clubs at both clubs say the ban should be scrapped.

Wolves said their decision had been ratified by the Football League but the Football Supporters' Federation (FSF) said it set a "dangerous precedent".

The FSF, which represents more than 140,000 football fans in England and Wales, said the decision to ban Cardiff fans from the match represented a surrender to violence.

It said it hopes, even at this late stage, the decision will be reversed, and it plans to write to the league on behalf of fans everywhere.

'Dividing line'

Wolves have indicated that the decision was taken "owing to problems with visiting supporters over the past two seasons".

Seats will only be sold to home fans with a history of buying tickets.

Two police officers were taken to hospital and 17 people arrested by West Midlands Police for disturbances inside and outside Molineux at the last match in March.

Cardiff City FC was later charged by the Football Association of Wales for failing to control their fans at the game

The FSF fears the move to ban fans could lead to similar bans elsewhere.

Chairman Malcolm Clarke said:"I think it's an extremely unfortunate and very short sighted move.

"It draws a dividing line between the vast majority of Cardiff supporters on one side and the police and authorities on the other."

Mr Clarke said the FSF had been "very disappointed" in the attitude taken by Wolves and the police.

He said he understood the main reason for the blanket ban was the "considerable disturbance" at the last Wolves-Cardiff match but the federation knows that some of the Cardiff fans' behaviour was "exacerbated by heavy-handedness" by police.

The FSF protest was welcomed by the Cardiff City Supporters' Club, which also opposes the ban.

Spokesman Vince Alm said: "For the tradition of the game both sets of fans should be allowed to all matches."

Mr Alm also said he knew of Cardiff fans who have already joined supporters clubs in the West Midlands just to get tickets for the January game.

"They will go in and they will just sit on their hands and watch the game."

Football arrests double as United take on bigger teams - 29/12/2006

Source : The Cumberland News

POLICE have warned of an increase in football hooliganism in Carlisle with annual arrests more than doubling only halfway through the season.

Officers say there have been 26 football-linked arrests in the city since July. Only 12 people were held throughout the whole of the previous season.

Fourteen of this season’s arrests came after a pre-season game between Carlisle United and Sunderland FC – and most of those held were Sunderland supporters.

But 12 United fans have been arrested – nine at home, three away – in connection with league games during the first few months of this term.

Police stress most offences, including making violent threats and abusive behaviour, took place away from United’s Brunton Park ground.

This year’s disorder follows a relatively trouble-free few years for football hooliganism in Carlisle, with arrest figures barely making it into double figures each year.

Police say most of the hooliganism which has sprung up has been spontaneous, involving teenagers baiting travelling supporters near United’s ground and in the city centre.

It is understood some of the disorder is also suspected of being organised, with groups planning to confront rival fans.

Officers warn they will seek football banning orders – barring people from stadiums – for anyone convicted of soccer-related disorder.

Eighteen bans connected to United are in place.

Detective Sergeant Ian Hodgson said: “Carlisle United are playing bigger clubs with a bigger travelling support. Policing the game has altered. We are getting increased crowds and increased cases of disorder.

“A lot of the teams we are playing have historically got a reputation of being involved in disorder.

“But a lot of the disorder is from a younger group which has emerged this season, aged 16 to 19, who have baited opposition fans.”

The trouble started pre-season following the Sunderland match when about 300 north east fans arrived by train in the morning and began drinking.

Police were forced to keep rival supporters apart as bottles were thrown and threats exchanged on Botchergate.

Only a week later a mob of United fans fought with Doncaster Rovers supporters on Rydal Street, off Botchergate.

Then in September, bar staff were force to lock yobs inside a Carlisle pub after they tried to confront Blackpool fans.

Weeks later, teenage hooligans baited Millwall fans in the city centre.

Officers have launched a string of operations targeting yobs and arrests have been made in Carlisle and Sunderland.

A number of hooligans have already been convicted, while others accused of offences are going through the courts.

Other police measures include sending out a van on matchdays equipped with the latest crime-recording CCTV technology.

Det Sgt Hodgson added: “If people are arrested we do actively look for banning orders. We believe that is a strong deterrent.

“Eighteen banning orders in place, other cases are going through courts. If these people are convicted, we will then apply for banning orders for them.”

Carlisle United owner Fred Story said: “We work closely with the police and our stewards and we’ve banned people for things like making offensive chants. We’ve got on top of it.

“With the Sunderland game, the problems took place outside the ground. At Brunton Park we’ve got a really friendly, family atmosphere.”

Scotland: Fan denies Easter Road ban breach - 30/12/2006

Source : Edinburgh Evening News

A SUSPECTED football hooligan has been arrested after allegedly breaking a bail order banning him from the vicinity of Easter Road stadium.

Sean Welsh pleaded not guilty at Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday to charges of violating the ban and is now expected to stand trial.

The 40-year-old was remanded in custody after Sheriff Kathrine Mackie refused to grant him a fresh bail application.

Welsh was allegedly spotted in his car by police outside the stadium before the Hibs match against St Mirren last Saturday.

Welsh had previously been arrested earlier this month as part of the force's series of dawn raids against suspected football casuals.

He was charged with breach of the peace outside three city centre pubs during the violent scenes which followed the Edinburgh derby on October 15.

The court granted him bail on the condition that he keep away from all SPL matches.

He was also banned from entering Lothian Road and Fountainbridge, where the fighting between suspected casuals took place.

But Welsh claimed in court that he was only dropping off his wife and child at Easter Road last Saturday before Hibs' 5-1 win and had no intention of attending the game.

Depute fiscal John Kirk opposed Welsh's application for bail yesterday.

Welsh's lawyer, David Blair Wilson, claimed that his client had not breached the order. He said: "The condition stated that Mr Welsh was not to approach SPL football games. I would argue that 'not to approach' is not specific and suggests that he was not permitted in the area with a view to attend a match.

"Mr Welsh was dropping off his wife and son in his car, from which he never exited. If he had asked me for my legal advice before doing so I would have told him that the order did not prevent him from dropping off relatives.

"Mr Welsh is a devoted family man who has been with the same employer for 20 years."

But Sheriff Mackie refused the bail application and ordered him to be kept in custody.

Welsh and his son, Sean, 21, were arrested by police who swooped on 17 households in an operation across Edinburgh and Midlothian in the early hours of December 12.

Both father and son were accused of acting in a disorderly manner, shouting, swearing, disrupting traffic, and challenging others to fight.

The pair appeared in court the following day and made no plea or declaration before being released on bail.

Rival gangs of casuals clashed after the 2-2 draw in October, where fighting erupted in Lothian Road and Fountain Park.

Police chiefs branded the scenes as the city's worst football-related violence in 20 years.

Around 60 hooligans fought running battles after the game, with police making 14 arrests.

In one incident, the Uluru bar in Lothian Road had its front window smashed when a thug hurled a traffic cone.

The gangs also clashed around the Fountain Bar in Fountainbridge. Some hurled rubbish bins and traffic signs during the battles as police officers tried to keep the factions apart.

A special police task force, codenamed Operation Agile, was set up to view CCTV footage of the clashes and identify culprits.

Violence mars Greek football - 29/12/2006

Source : Athens News

what sticks out in Greek football? Apart from the regular scenes of riot police engaging hooligans and pulling the pin on the teargas grenades, not a lot.

Indeed, four abiding images all point to the continuing problem of violence on the terraces.

A group of firemen at the end of February trying to go about their business after some PAOK fans had set fire to some seats at the Toumba stadium huddle together as they are pelted with more chairs, chunks of concrete and even mobile phones.

Season 06/07 - December - Page 3 Grecephoto1ot9

A week later, before the AEK Athens - Panathinaikos derby, a supporter was isolated by opposing fans and had the new year kicked out of him.

Season 06/07 - December - Page 3 Grecephoto2yb0

At the end of the 2005-6 season came the Greek Cup final in Crete. In case you cannot remember, Olympiakos beat AEK 3-0 to secure their second successive league and cup double but the event was marred by the sight of AEK supporters trashing the return ferry and then hurling lumps of masonry at the police as they waited dockside.

Season 06/07 - December - Page 3 Grecephoto3rj6

One policeman was hit and, needless to say, hospitalised. The one good thing to this event was that the perpetrator was arrested and given a custodial sentence, but that has been something of a collector's item.

And then just a couple of weeks ago, there was the sight of an Ionikos fan launching a flying that would have been more at home in a rugby match at an unsuspecting assistant referee who subsequently had to be taken to hospital in a neck brace.

Season 06/07 - December - Page 3 Grecephoto4mw7

These are the images that imprint themselves on the collective mind and remain the reason why even a First Division, repackaged during the summer as a Super League, remains unappealing as a family spectacle.

Perhaps, if we want an upbeat image of Greek football in 2006 it should not be the violence that continues to haunt the game but of the retiring Zagorakis who provided an excellent example for everyone in football.

Sporting CP - Benfica Lisboa - 01/12/2006

Source: mail

At 13:30 we start gathering for the match. When it was 18:00 we were arround
100 lads (Casuals+Grupo1143+Skinheads+JuveLeo Ultras) drinking and waiting
near the subway for NN to arrive. When they arrive, arround 100, between
18:30/19:00 we try to meet them outside the subway but the police intervines
quickly. A few stones and bottles are trown to the police and they charge
us, splitting our numbers. We regroup and attack the police and then try to
go arround them to fight with NN but they were surrounded by cops. The cops
then make them enter the stadium and us to retreat. After that just a few
minor scuffles. Respect for NN for coming alone but to many cops in the
stadium area make it difficult for us to "work".

Six hurt in basketball riots - 06/12/2006

Source: ITV News

A riot which broke out after a basketball match left six fans injured, two of them seriously.

Rival supporters clashed shortly before the Uleb Cup match between Serbia's Red Star Belgrade and Greek side PAOK Salonika in Belgrade.

Fans of the Serbian capital's other big team, Partizan Belgrade, also joined in the clashes.

Fans invaded the court and pelted each other with flares as well as seats they ripped from the tiers before riot police moved in to quell the violence.

Encounters between Red Star and Partizan in either football or basketball have a history of crowd trouble and more than 100 fans were injured when an entire tier collapsed amid clashes during their basketball derby in June.

Scotland: Hooligan blitz at derby match - 23/12/2006

Source: Edinburgh Evening News

Season 06/07 - December - Page 3 2312hoobas8

Seventy officers will be on duty to keep order during the game at Tynecastle and when supporters head into the city centre afterwards.

The aim is to stop hooligans starting trouble as thousands of shoppers head home from the Christmas sales.

Images of 46 alleged hooligans arrested in recent weeks during a crackdown on violence at October's Hibs-Hearts game will be distributed among them.

The men were arrested in dawn raids across the Capital by a special police squad after allegedly taking part in street battles following the October derby.

They are already the subject of special bail conditions banning them from attending the game, which kicks off at 2pm.

Police chiefs said today they will closely monitor the men in case any are plotting revenge attacks on rival fans.

Undercover officers will be employed as "spotters" to identify thugs among the crowds, while city centre pubs will be visited regularly by their uniformed colleagues.

Officers armed with camcorders will be on hand to capture any troublemakers on film so they can be traced later.

Licensees from pubs which could prove potential flashpoints have also been asked to alert police if they recognise any known hooligans entering their premises. Extra officers will be on duty at Tynecastle to ensure anyone causing problems can be arrested on the spot and kept off the streets after the game.

Superintendent Brian Muir, the match commander, said: "We are not expecting trouble inside the ground, but any arrests will be dealt with quickly.

"That will ensure these people don't even reach the streets after the game to cause more problems.

"There is a clear distinction between ordinary fans and the casual element who often don't even bother to attend the game itself.

"But I think the message is getting across that we will not tolerate scenes like we saw in October. We have more than enough resources in place to target them."

Council CCTV operators will work with police to track the movements of any troublemakers.

More than 100 officers were assigned to handle the Hearts and Hibs tie at Easter Road on November 8 and its aftermath. The move represented a 30 per cent increase on the usual police presence deployed for the clubs' clashes in the wake of the violence on October 15.

The clampdown was part of the biggest policing operation planned for a derby game in the Capital in more than five years.

Supt Muir said: "We've taken the decision to have the levels of policing at similar levels to previous derby matches. That is due to the lack of trouble seen at the last game between the clubs.

"But the town will be busy with pedestrians on Boxing Day and the pubs and restaurants will be full.

"That has been a concern in my mind and that's why we will have uniformed officers in the city centre to provide reassurance."

Rival gangs of casuals clashed after the 2-2 draw in October, where fighting erupted in Lothian Road and Fountain Park.

Police chiefs described the scenes as the city's "worst" football-related violence in 20 years.

Around 60 hooligans fought running battles after the derby, with police making 14 arrests.

In one incident, outside the Uluru bar in Lothian Road, the pub's front window was smashed after a thug hurled a traffic cone through the glass.

The gangs also clashed around the Fountain Bar in Fountainbridge. Some hurled rubbish bins and traffic signs during the battles as police officers tried to keep the factions apart.

A special police task force, codenamed Operation Agile, was set up to trace the casuals involved in violent clashes using CCTV images of the chaotic scenes.

Source: AP

Twenty-nine of the suspected hooligans were charged after fighting at a derby between Stockholm rivals AIK and Hammarby in October 2004.

The match was interrupted for 45 minutes as AIK fans clashed with police officers who stopped them from going on the field.

Ten people, including six of the those charged in the Stockholm derby, were charged with assault due to a brawl at a game between AIK and GAIS of Goteborg in June 2005.

The suspects ranged in age between 17 and 40.
