'Neo-Nazis pose World Cup threat' - 31/03/2006

Source : FT.com

Rightwing extremists and neo-Nazis posed a security threat to the football World Cup in Germany this summer, the German government admitted for the first time yesterday.

Wolfgang Schäuble, interior minister, told a final security conference ahead of the tournament that "it was now clear that some people in the far-right scene want to use the World Cup as a means of raising their profile", and stressed that security measures would be tightened as a response.

The threat posed by extremist groups is only the latest headache for the World Cup organisers. The tournament, starting on June 9, has been plagued by problems including a complex ticketing system, stadium safety and the cancellation in January of the opening ceremony.

The extremist protests are aimed in part at expressing support for Mahmoud Ahmadi-Nejad, Iranian president, who caused outrage last year by calling for Israel's abolition and by denying the Holocaust, according to intelligence officials.

German security officials at the conference admitted that special security measures were being taken for the Iranian soccer team.

Tournament planners in Germany have in the past played down concerns over the far-right, despite the resurfacing of such groups in parts of Germany recently.

But now Berlin appears to have changed strategy - in part due to new evidence that far-right groups are planning at least nine street demonstrations and aim to circulate a neo-Nazi music CD among football fans, according to intelligence officials cited in media reports.

Mr Schäuble also said Germany would temporarily suspend the European Union's Schengen travel agreement to allow more frequent identity checks at borders under a clause in the 15-country agreement permitting the reintroduction of controls at times of heightened security.

Security checks at borders "will be introduced as required by the situation and this will enable us to use this threat filter in an effective manner". He suggested hooligans from eastern European countries posed a greater threat than those from western Europe, as security authorities and football associations, especially in Britain, had more experience of handling hooligans.

Mr Schäuble welcomed the "strong stance" taken by Charles Clarke, UK home secretary, against hooligans travelling to Germany. Mr Clarke has backed plans for the German police to take a tough line against England fans who break Germany's ban on Nazi propaganda.

Patrols boost bid to curb match trouble - 31/03/2006

Source : Chesterfield Today

Police are increasing patrols and warning football hooligans to stay away from Chesterfield FC's biggest home game of the season against Nottingham Forest.

Saturday's sell-out match at Saltergate, which kicks off at 1pm, is expected to attract more than 7,000 fans and – following trouble at the teams' previous clash – officers are to be drafted in from around the county.
Insp Graham Lamin, Chesterfield's operational planning officer, said: "We want the match to have all its usual passion and atmosphere but the message for those intent on causing violence or disorder is you will be dealt with in a swift and robust manner.
"Offenders will be arrested, brought before the courts and we will seek banning orders."
Police revealed there was fighting and abuse between fans during the away match at Nottingham in December which resulted in an enquiry. Some Chesterfield fans were arrested and charged and face possible bans.
But Saturday's match has been classed as a Category C fixture by police which demands the highest alert level and this will be met with more traffic and foot patrols, a mobile CCTV unit and a standby helicopter.
Supporters are urged to arrive early, expect limited parking and a substantial number of coaches from Nottingham will be parked on Hawksley Avenue.
Insp Lamin added: "Police will be working with Chesterfield FC, Nottinghamshire Police, British Transport Police, licensees and pub managers to ensure the event passes safely.
"The vast majority are well-behaved but there are elements who attach themselves to both clubs and want to cause trouble.
"Those with bans from Saltergate, including 45 Chesterfield fans, and Nottingham's City Ground should not travel to the area on Saturday or they could face consequences."

Police gear up for big Posh match with rivals - 31/03/2006

Source : Peterborough Today

POLICE have drawn up crowd control plans for the visit of 3,000 fans of Peterborough United's rivals Northampton Town on Saturday.

Posh are playing host to their League Two rivals at London Road, and the atmosphere is expected to be more charged than usual as both teams are pushing for promotion.

Past clashes have seen the hostility between the two sets of supporters spill over into violence, and officers are preparing themselves after Northampton fans snapped up their ticket allocation for travelling supporters.

Pc Steve Pollard, who is in charge of matchday policing, said the game is a category C for policing – meaning it will have the highest possible police presence.

The pre-match build up and the game itself will be monitored by seven police teams, each containing up to seven officers in each.

They will be given back-up from six police dogs, and two support units will be on standby.

Pc Pollard said: "It's a local derby and the away support will be far higher than for other games this season.

"It is category C, but the amount of police we have got on should mean we are well prepared for any event. And we will be policing London Road and the city centre before, during and after the game."

Adi Mowles, chairman of the Posh Independent Supporters' Association (PISA) said: "The rivalry is bordering on hatred. It is far more fierce than with any other club, and it definitely goes both ways. There are people who want to get involved in violence, but the police do tend to keep trouble under control nowadays."

A hardcore of 27 Peterborough United hooligans have been banned from London Road.

Swindon Town - Bristol Rovers - 06/03/2006

Source: The Swindon Advertiser

Dozen arrested fans were from out of the town

NONE of the people arrested after trouble at the weekend when rival football supporters clashed were from Swindon.

Police have now confirmed that the 12 people taken in to custody were from Bristol, Bath and Gloucestershire.

Nine of them were arrested for violent disorder and three for public order offences.

All the men have been bailed while police continue their inquiries and are scheduled to report back to Swindon police station in May.

As reported in yesterday's Adver, Bristol Rovers fans ran riot at the Queens Tap, near the rail station, on Saturday.

Up to 100 people were involved in the clash at around 5pm.

Men believed to be Bristol Rovers supporters smashed all the windows of the pub when they threw cans and bottles at Swindon Town fans inside.

The landlord, who had only opened the place two days before the flare-up, said it was the worst trouble he has seen in 12 years in the trade.

Bristol Rovers' away game against Oxford United was cancelled at 11am on Saturday and with no game to watch their fans descended on Swindon instead.

Swindon's game against Tranmere had also been cancelled.

Football liaison officer James Neighbour, of Swindon police, said: "What happened is they went to Oxford and when that was cancelled they stopped off at Swindon.

"They got off the train and have basically had it away in Swindon.

"The Bristol ones were outside the pub and we will be studying CCTV and speaking to witnesses as part of our inquiries."

Sergeant Carly Stevenson said that it had been a frightening experience for those in the pub.

Licensee Graham Simpson, who has just moved to the town from Cambridge, said that he and his customers had been shocked by the trouble.

He added that it was fortunate his two children, aged four and eight, were not in the pub at the time.

Anyone with information should call Swindon police on 0845 408 7000 or Crimestoppears, anonymously, on 0800 555111.

Dutch police arrest 51 suspected hooligans - 03/03/2006

Source: Turkish Daily News

Police arrested 51 Dutch soccer fans and used pepper spray to control hooligans in central Amsterdam shortly before the Netherlands' 1-0 win over Ecuador in a World Cup warmup. The fans, described as Ajax supporters, were accused of "public violence, thievery and resisting arrest," a police report said on Thursday. One police officer and one tourist were treated for minor wounds in Wednesday night's violence. Seven suspects were released, and 44 remained in custody and were expected to appear before a judge later on Thursday. The incident will raise fears that Dutch hooligans could cause trouble at this summer's World Cup in Germany. Police said the incident was related to a recent clash between supporters of rival clubs Ajax and ADO The Hague

Rangers may suffer for fans' bus attack - 09/03/2006

Source: The Independent

Rangers could face punishment from Uefa, European football's governing body, after Villarreal's team bus came under attack on its way to Tuesday night's Champions' League tie.

Uefa is awaiting a report from their match observer on the pre-match incident, which saw a window of the bus shattered by a missile. Alex McLeish's side went out of the competition on the away goals rule with their heads high, but the club may face action if it can be proved their supporters were behind the attack.

Spanish police clashed with supporters outside Villarreal's stadium, El Madrigal, and Uefa look set to launch an investigation. A spokesman said: "Once we receive a report from the Uefa delegate then we look into what exactly went on.

"We expect that to arrive two days after the game but if these incidents did occur then action is likely to happen. I don't really want to say too much at this time but we are certain to act on the Uefa delegate's report."

Villarreal could also be in hot water, with Rangers' safety chief Lawrence McIntyre citing security for the game in Spain as among the worst he had seen.

An estimated 15,000 Rangers fans travelled to Spain for the second leg of the last-16 tie, even though the official allocation for travelling supporters was just 3,000. Thousands more managed to obtain tickets for home sections of the ground, despite appeals from McIntyre ahead of the game for those without tickets to stay away.

Villarreal added another chapter to their fairytale progress in this season's Champions' League. The modest Mediterranean side, who hail from a small industrial town of less than 50,000 people and have spent most of their history in Spain's regional leagues, have now gatecrashed their way into the top eight clubs on the continent.

Holding a slim advantage after their 2-2 draw in Glasgow two weeks ago, the La Liga side trailed 1-0 at half-time at the Madrigal. But a rare goal from the defender Rodolfo Arruabarrena at the start of the second half was enough to secure the Spaniards a place in the last eight alongside Barcelona and Juventus.

"We are delighted," the Argentinian playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme said. "We have achieved something very important for the club. It wasn't a great game, but what really counts is that we are through to the next round. No one would have believed that at the start of the competition that we were going to make it through to the quarter-finals."

Arruabarrena, who like Riquelme began his career at Boca Juniors, also highlighted the significance of the team's success.

"We have achieved something historic for this club," he said. "Very few clubs are able to reach the quarter-finals in their first season in the competition. That goal was the most important goal I've scored since I've been at Villarreal."

Yet to lose a game in the competition, the team known in Spain as the "yellow submarine" is preparing to torpedo another of Europe's big guns.

"Of course it's important to go down in the history, but we are already thinking about how we can get to the semi-finals," said Villarreal's coach Manuel Pellegrini. "There is no limit to the ambitions of this team. Our dreams are being held in place by the hard work and dedication of the whole squad."

Rangers could confirm Paul Le Guen as their 12th manager within the "next couple of days", according to their former player Artur Numan. The club themselves would only say no movement was expected on Alex McLeish's successor at Ibrox. But Numan is "almost 100 per cent sure" the former Lyon coach will be named this week by the chairman David Murray.

"In the next couple of days David Murray will probably come out with a statement that Le Guen has signed," he said. "Now it's important the team focus on the league and hopefully take second place and Le Guen is probably already looking for players for next year."

Burnley: Soccer thugs jailed - 22/03/2006

Source: Lancashire Evening Telegraph

FIVE football hooligans from Burnley have been caged after going on the rampage in Manchester at a World Cup qualifying match.

The group, including former BNP councillor Luke Smith, were among 24 people sentenced at the culmination of Operation Lucas, which was launched to investigate trouble in Manchester city centre following the match between England and Wales in October 2004.

Newcastle: Red card given to soccer fans - 27/03/2006

Source: The Evening Chronicle

Seven alleged soccer thugs have been banned from travelling to this summer's World Cup finals in Germany.

The Newcastle United fans will not be allowed into the country between June 4 and July 9 while the tournament is played for fears they might cause trouble.

John Jackson, Paul Waugh, Jason Allen and Jamie Clark were all banned from travelling when magistrates imposed a bail condition following their appearance in relation to a pub brawl.

The four - along with Craig Heward, Noel Renton, and Michael Dafter - pleaded not guilty to affray after an incident in the Three Bulls Heads pub on Percy Street, Newcastle, following United's FA Cup clash with Coventry City in January, 2005.

Heward, 24, from Barton Close in Battle Hill, Wallsend, Renton, 29, from Chipchase Crescent in Westerhope, Newcastle and Dafter, 25, from Teams Court in Gateshead, already have a footballing banning order meaning they could not travel to Germany.

But this week Jackson, 24, of Isabella Walk, Throckley, Newcastle, Waugh, 35, of Orpington Avenue, Walker, Newcastle, Allen, 33, of Coleridge Avenue, Gateshead and Clark, 18, of Falcon Way, South Shields, appeared before JPs to apply to have their restrictions lifted.

The bail condition also banned them from Newcastle parking meter zones four hours before and after Newcastle home games, not allowed within five miles of any England or Newcastle game anywhere in the country, and not allowed to enter the Three Bulls Heads pub.

The court heard how none of the four had previous offences for football violence and that the city centre ban was having an affect on both themselves and their families.

But JPs refused and the World Cup ban still stands.

Det Sgt Paul Evans of the Football Intelligence Unit, told the court: "All of the defendants are known to associate with football hooligans and on a number of occasions they have been arrested to prevent a breach of the peace but later released without charge."

Simon Worthy, prosecuting, said: "The issue here is the conditions of bail and the Bail Act says you must assess if there is a risk of further offences - we say there is.

"The presence of a senior police officer in court shows the seriousness of this."

Mark Harrison, defending, said: "The conditions are open to innocent breach and not being allowed into the city centre four hours before and after a match can totally wipe out days.

"And the idea of banning somebody from entering a country for six weeks is extraordinary."

All seven will reappear before magistrates on the affray charge on May 4.

Geordie soccer thugs of war - 22/03/2006

Source: The Evening Chronicle

As Magpies face Chelsea we recall terror of 70s and 80s

A shell-shocked Newcastle United head for Stamford Bridge tonight to play Chelsea, the best team in Britain, in an attempt to reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

But, thankfully, the only trouble the Magpies will come up against is attempting to keep the Chelsea `cost a fortune' superstars from over-running them on the pitch, a big difference from when the two sides were due to meet way back in 1977, the age of the super-hooligan.

Trouble had erupted at a previous meeting of the two sides at St James' Park .

As a result, thousands of leaflets appeared before the return match urging Geordie fans to make the trip to London to "smash down the gates, (of Stamford Bridge), and kick the Cockneys all over the place."

Newspaper headlines blasted Geordie Thugs of War.

But with the leaflets finding their way to London, further fuel was added to the rivalry, which resulted in a massive police deployment in an effort to reduce the prospects of the all too frequent disturbances.

The hooliganism problem of the time, which had chosen soccer grounds as its base, was spiraling out of control, with most teams being following by gangs with names such as the Inter City Firm, the Bushwhackers and the Service Crew. Normal fans began to shun matches and dads refused to take their children, as the gangs meticulously planned their attack on the opposition with military precision.

In a bid to escape police controls, thugs travelled by regular rail service instead of match specials or went by car or hired vans.

Gang members wore nothing which could identify them as supporters of a particular team and attract attention.

Many had a hard core of around 150 members, which could swell to nearly 400 on a match day.

Their battle plans and strategies were complex and their objective was to get by the police and infiltrate the opposing fans' territories.

Before a game they would tour an area in force seeking out their local counterparts, who were obviously taking counter-measures.

The Government brought in controls, which simply moved the violence from the terraces on to the streets. But worse was yet to come.

English hooligans had decided to export their thuggery abroad and gangs began to follow the national team to big tournaments.

The problems between Newcastle and Chelsea fans was ongoing.

In 1984 a gang of Chelsea fans appeared in the Haymarket area of Newcastle wielding knifes and at least three United fans ended up in hospital, one with more than 100 stitches.

Luckily, today, apart from the odd incident, football has been returned to the genuine supporter.

In fact the only thing that stops it being a family occasion is the price of tickets.

Hopefully, if the headlines tomorrow say that `United smash Chelsea', they will refer to the actions on the pitch.

The original Newcastle-Chelsea match, in 1978, finished in a 2-2 draw.

London was a bit of a powder keg that weekend because Liverpool were playing Nottingham Forest in the League Cup Final.

One Nottingham Forest fan was battered by an iron bar the night before the match in a London car park by a gang of men who spilled out of two cars, but nobody got to know who they were or even if they were football supporters.

Bognor - Newport County - 12/03/2006

Source: The Argus

Chaos as soccer fans run amok

From the archive, first published Tuesday 14th Mar 2006.

Football fans threw beer glasses and urinated over a clubhouse during a mass brawl.

About 30 fans of Newport County caused mayhem after their game against Bognor on Saturday.

Some 25 police officers and a number of police dogs were called to Bognor's Nyewood Lane ground after the visiting fans began fighting each other in the clubhouse.

Bognor steward Phil Diamond said: "They were all the worse for wear, arguing and fighting among themselves. Then they started throwing beer at each other and over the ceiling.

"They were urinating everywhere in the toilets, all over the walls, the floor and in the sinks."

Arun police chief Brian Bracher condemned the violence and said he feared for the safety of his officers as they tried to break up the fighting. He said: "It would appear that a large number of the supporters were drunk when they arrived at the ground and, in the opinion of my officers, should not have been allowed entry to the match, let alone allowed to continue drinking in the ground bar.

"This causes me significant concern and I have directed a full investigation into the circumstances around this event.

"I would like to publicly praise the bravery of the first officers attending, who were put in a very dangerous situation in trying to deal with the problems in the bar.

"Even with a high level of threats they acted in a very calm and professional manner to keep the situation under control until further assistance arrived."

One Bognor fan has described the situation as "incredibly scary". John Halsey, 59, was at the match and said he feared for his life as fans began shouting and screaming at each other.

He said: "It was absolute bedlam for most of the match, they were insulting and shouting abuse at all the players.

"Then right after the match they continued drinking and drinking and it kicked off very quickly.

"I thought I was going to be hit several times by about three men who just went at each other.

"It was incredibly scary for all concerned."

Two men were arrested at the club. One was arrested for running onto the pitch and the other for causing affray.

Mr Diamond said club officials tried to shut the bar but decided to wait for police to arrive. He said: "We tried closing the bar but the way they were behaving it would have been bedlam so we waited until the police arrived. They were spitting at bar staff and throwing beer over them.

"I have been here about 20 years and I have never seen anything like that. It was a disgrace."

The game had been earmarked as a memorial game to mark the anniversary of the murder of Newport fan, Lemy Bullock. A minute's silence was observed before the game and Bognor had been warned to expect more away fans than usual.

Club manager Jack Pearce said: "There was no provocation from any of the Bognor supporters to any of the Newport fans and the vast majority of the Newport supporters were impeccably behaved. Unfortunately a few decided to drink too much. Their behaviour was disgraceful."

St Johnstone fans clashed with Hearts fans - 13/03/2006

Source: Evening News

Jambos held after clashes

POLICE arrested 22 football fans when a group of St Johnstone supporters clashed with Hearts fans in Inverness at the weekend.

A Northern Constabulary spokesman said a total of 22 men from the Perth and Tayside area were arrested after the trouble. Most were believed to be St Johnstone fans.

A spokesman said some of the 22 were picked up in Dingwall after police swooped on Victoria Park, the home of Ross County, where St Johnstone were in action.

Other fans clashed with Hearts supporters in Inverness, where the Edinburgh club were playing Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

It is not known how many Hearts fans were involved.

All had been released from custody and a report is to be sent to the procurator fiscal.

League fan segregation an option to end violence - 19/03/2006

Source: abc.net.au

New South Wales Police Commissioner Ken Moroney says he will not rule out segregating fans at rugby league matches after yet more violence at a match in Sydney.

Supporters of the Canterbury Bulldogs team were involved in a brawl during Friday night's NRL match against the Wests Tigers at the Olympic stadium, where 19 people were ejected from the ground.

Commissioner Moroney said they would now consider a number of options including segregation.

"It's an option available to me but that's obviously one that if it were to occur, would need the support and assistance of the NRL and the various football teams," he said.

"But above all else, it would need strong support from the fans themselves."

Meanwhile, New South Wales Premier Morris Iemma has called on Bulldogs management to do more to control its supporters and has warned segregation could be an option.

"If we've got to protect those decent, law abiding, sports loving fans by this measure then we will and it needs to serve as a very clear warning to the code and to the clubs involved," he said.

"It will be a very sad day if we have to take extreme, the extreme measure of segregation, which is what they've done, not just in the United Kingdom, but throughout Europe in segregating the fans of opposing sides.

"I would hate to see that happen in Sydney but if we've got to take it to protect families, then we'll do so."
