| Newcastle: Racist fan is booted out by United - 26/03/2007
Source: The Evening Chronicle
A racist lout who shouted abuse during a Toon game has been banned from football grounds for three years and stripped of his season ticket.
Newcastle United fans sitting near Steven Newman reported him they were left disgusted by his vile outburst.
He was arrested after being heard chanting: "Zigga-zigga, shoot the n****, up the National Front" during the home game against Portsmouth on November 26.
The 39-year-old factory worker, from Beadnell Avenue, North Shields, had already been fined after admitting charges of racially aggravated harassment and being drunk in a sports ground.
Now he has been banned from all football grounds for three years by Newcastle magistrates after not contesting a banning order brought by Northumbria Police. He has also had his season ticket taken back by the club.
After the hearing, PC Stu Garrow, from the force's football banning unit, said: "This is an example of Northumbria Police weeding out the racists in the crowd."
A spokesman for Newcastle United warned it would not allow any racists in the ground.
He said: "The club will never tolerate any kind of racist abuse within the stadium. Anyone found guilty of this kind of act will lose their ticket."
A spokesman for Whitley Bay-based charity Show Racism the Red Card said it also welcomed the banning order.
He added: "The message here is one that every Newcastle fan knows. It's loud and clear both before the game and at half-time that the club won't tolerate racism.
"This was an extreme example - it was somebody who was not only being racist but also shouting for a racist political party.
"We welcome him losing his season ticket and the banning order - it shows the campaign is being taken seriously by Newcastle United and the authorities.
"It's also a warning to anyone who is stupid enough to be racist inside a football ground."
Under the terms of the order, Newman is banned from St James' Park but is still allowed in the city centre on match days because he is not part of any hooligan element.
He will also be expected to report to police before any game involving England, or if Newcastle get back into Europe during the length of the order.
Newman had previously been fined £35 for racially aggravated harassment and being drunk in a sports ground. He had also been ordered to pay £43 costs.
His solicitor Mark Saunders said: "He has been sentenced, he deeply regrets his behaviour about the incident in question." _________________

| Darlington - Hartlepool United - 25/03/2007Source: The Journal 13 arrested as trouble flares at local derby match Police arrested 13 people yesterday after trouble flared between rival football fans following a heated North-East derby. The arrests took place before and after the League Two showdown between Darlington and Hartlepool, won 3-0 by away side Hartlepool. The defeat prevented the home side from going 14 games unbeaten and sparked trouble on the streets of Darlington, which were being patrolled by hundreds of police officers. It was the first time the sides had met at Darlington's TFM Arena. A Durham Police spokeswoman said: "Before the game two Darlington fans were arrested for being in breach of their football banning orders and a third man was arrested for a public order offence. "Inside the ground, one supporter from each side was arrested for pitch incursion. "After the match there were isolated incidents in and around Darlington town centre, which led to a further nine people being arrested for minor public order offences. "All of those arrested were male and remain in custody for the time being at Darlington and Bishop Auckland Police stations." Durham Police drafted in officers from Cleveland's mounted section to help control the 10,000-strong crowd. Ticket numbers had been restricted to ensure safety at the game. Chief Insp Helen McMillan, who was in charge of policing the event: "Despite the arrests the day had gone as well as could be expected from a policing view. "The planning of the operation for the match was a major exercise. We have had a passionate local derby watched by 10,000 people, the vast majority of whom were there purely to watch the football." _________________ | |

| Website screens aggro by Toon fans - 22/03/2007
Source: The Evening Chronicle
Shameful scenes of Toon Army trouble have surfaced on the internet.
ttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUadVscqS1Y
In the short clip, seemingly taken before Newcastle United's clash with AZ Alkmaar, fans and Dutch supporters are seen standing in the town square while missiles, including chairs and glasses, are thrown back and forth.
The 20-second film, which appears to have been shot on a mobile phone, is on video-sharing website YouTube under the title Trouble in Alkmaar.
So far it has been seen by more than 1,500 users.
It is in sharp contrast to other clips on the same site which show Geordie and Dutch fans having a pre-match singalong.
It is unclear who started the disruption, but one user-comment claims: "The Dutch were preying on lads with shirts who didn't want any aggro but wouldn't go anywhere near the lads who were up for it".
Northumbria police said it has been told of some incidents which took place in Alkmaar on Thursday.
A spokeswoman said: "We've been made aware of a number of isolated incidents of disorder, and these are being looked into."
Newcastle United declined to comment.
The Uefa Cup match ended in heartbreak for the Magpies, who were knocked out 4-4 on away goals.
But several fans have left video clips of the day, before and after the match.
One user has posted a film of Newcastle fans mixing peacefully with Dutch fans alongside the caption: "The Geordie Army singing happily with Alkmaar fans in the bar opposite, which later turned into a battleground."
Earlier this month, the Chronicle revealed how footage of the notorious Battle of Breda had also surfaced on the same website.
Newcastle's away tie against NAC Breda in October 2003 resulted in the arrest of 85 Newcastle fans and a number of banning orders. _________________

| Greece suspends all team matches until April 13 after fan's death - 31/03/2007
Source: http://www.hri.org
Greece has suspended all team matches until April 13, following the death of a fan in a pre-arranged battle between rival club supporters. The decision was announced on Friday, following an urgent meeting between Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis and the three ministers directly responsible for sports and law enforcement, Public Order Minister Vyron Polydoras, Justice Minister Anastasios Papaligouras and Deputy Sports Minister George Orfanos. As 15 fans arrested during and after the incident went up before a public prosecutor, meanwhile, government spokesman Theodoros Roussopoulos stressed that current laws did not allow suspended sentences or fines for those convicted of sports-related violence and that they would go straight to jail.
The spokesman also announced the formation of a special committee, which would include the three ministers, to monitor that laws were strictly carried out and said that Orfanos would call a meeting with all professional sports clubs and bodies during Easter week to discuss action against hooliganism.
Roussopoulos underlined that authorities would take pains to track down hooligans and hold specific individuals responsible for violence, ensuring that all stadiums had cameras installed and that tickets were issued electronically by name, so that those attending games could be identified.
The clash involving some 500 hooligans occurred on Thursday evening ahead of a women's first-division volleyball match between Greece's two largest clubs, arch-rivals Panathinaikos and Olympiakos. According to police reports, there is strong evidence that it was arranged in advance and that the match itself was just a pretext. The two groups engaged in a 20-minute battle in the eastern suburb of Paiania, during which a young man in his early 20s was killed and several others, including passers-by not directly involved in the fighting, were seriously injured. Police intervened, detaining 18 people and arresting 13, who were charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm.
According to the coroner's report, the slain Panathinaikos supporter was killed by severe blows to the head with a blunt instrument, such as a club, but also suffered multiple stab wounds from two knives and had been kicked while lying on the ground. The victim had not, however, been run down by a car as suspected earlier.
While investigating the incident, police raided the offices of 11 Panathinaikos and Olympiakos fan associations around Athens, recovering items such as clubs, crowbars, chains, flares and a quantity of hashish.
Among those arrested and sent before a public prosecutor was the driver of the car seen ploughing through a crowd of battling fans, who was originally suspected of running over the slain youth. Police said the car had actually run down an Olympiakos supporter who is now being treated in KAT hospital.
According to the driver, he was trapped in his car in a line that had formed because of the battle on Lavrio Avenue and was attacked by Olympiakos supporters who realised that he and the three passengers in his cars were Panathinaikos supporters headed for the women's volleyball match at the Paiania Sports Centre.
When they began to damage his car, the driver swung into the opposite lane in an attempt to escape them and accelerated, so that he ran over one of the young Olympiakos supporters.
One more man - the head of a fan association in Peristeri - was also placed under arrest and led before a public prosecutor on Saturday after he turned himself in. Police had been looking for him after finding a number of suspect items at the fan association's offices during Friday's raids.
Following a meeting at police headquarters on Friday, investigating officers said they had no firm evidence that the arrival of Panathinaikos supporters on the scene had been organised in advance but it was clear that Olympiakos supporters had orchestrated their arrival in large numbers.
They were seen leaving Karaiskaki stadium, the Olympiakos home ground, on 150 motorbikes headed for Paiania, while another 50 motorbikes joined the group at the Kallimarmaron (Panathenian) stadium in central Athens.
Public prosecutor slaps heavy charges on Paiania hooligans
Public prosecutors slapped heavy charges on those arrested for the violence on Lavrio Avenue in Paiania on Thursday, during a clash between rival club supporters in which one man was killed and several were injured.
Police arrested 13 people on the scene, including an underage boy, while another three people were placed under arrest late on Thursday night after raids on football fan associations in Agios Dimitrios, Peristeri and Kallithea.
A total of 15 suspects were led before public prosecutors on Friday over the affair - since one of those arrested was in hospital being treated for injuries - and were slapped with criminal charges that included participation in a criminal organisation, intentional homicide, multiple counts of attempted homicide in concert with others, multiple counts of robbery with others, breaking the laws on explosives, causing explosives and possession of narcotics.
Misdemeanour charges against them included causing grievous bodily harm, vandalism, causing bodily harm through negligence, illegally carrying weapons, weapons use and weapons possession and breaking laws on fireworks and flares.
The case has now been passed on to the 26th examining magistrate.

| Call for banning orders on hooligans - 27/03/2007
Source: http://www..thenorthernecho.co.uk
POLICE have pledged to pursue football banning orders against 15 fans arrested following the weekend derby clash between Darlington and Hartlepool.Fourteen of those arrested have now been charged with various offences, mainly public order matters, and are expected to appear before Darlington magistrates in the next few weeks. The remaining fan was dealt with by way of a £60 fixed penalty notice, police said.Overall, police said the operation was a success and Darlington Football Club has stressed that the vast majority of problems were away from the stadium.Chief Inspector Helen McMillan, of Durham Police, said: "Despite the arrests, the day went as well as could be expected."We've had a passionate local derby watched by 10,000 people - the vast majority of whom were there purely to enjoy the football."We are going to pursue the possibility of obtaining football banning orders against all 15 arrested. In addition, we will be studying CCTV footage from both inside and outside the ground. "If we can positively identify anyone committing offences from that material, we will pursue them also."Darlington Football Club backed the police's determination to root out the trouble-causers. Chief executive Jon Sotnick said: "We must do everything within our power to ensure these thugs stay away from attending our football matches."The club has been congratulated by all authorities, including the highways department, in their handling and hosting of the first derby between the two clubs at the Darlington Arena."Durham Police engaged in one of its biggest operations in years for the match at the Quakers' 96.6 TFM Arena, which saw Hartlepool win 3-0.About 200 officers were involved on Sunday, including Police Community Support Officers and special constables.Eight riders and their horses from Cleveland Police were drafted in to escort fans to and from the stadium, with help from British Transport Police.Police said one fan from each side was arrested during the match for running onto the pitch. There were three arrests outside the ground - two for breaching banning orders and one for a public order offence.Later, ten arrests were made away from the ground for public order offences, one after an incident on licensed premises.Glasses and other missiles were hurled at police as they tried to control crowds after the match. At least one mounted officer was hit by a stone. Two helicopters hovered over the town, but a police spokesman denied they were both police aircraft. He said: "Aerial support was provided by the helicopter from the North-East Air Support Unit, but it was not such a big operation that we needed two helicopters. People get angry about the expense of the helicopter, but it is cost-neutral in that it is on-call all the time."Councillor Bill Dixon, deputy leader of Darlington Borough Council, who was at the match, said: "Most residents were happy with the way the police deployed themselves and maintained a very difficult situation very well."It is just a real pity that a limited number of idiots spoiled it for everybody and could have besmirched the name of the town."Comments from fans on The Northern Echo website also suggested the police operation had by and large been well-run.Simon Brodie, from Darlington, said: "Not at any point did I feel concerned. The police managed the minor skirmishes well."

| Darlington vs Hartlepool: Ban these match thugs - 27/03/2007
Surce: http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk
IN the wake of the first derby match between arch rivals Darlington and Hartlepool football clubs, the police have vowed to pursue football banning orders against 15 fans who were arrested.
And The Northern Echo joins all decent fans in supporting that course of action because it is vital that the minority of trouble-causers are rooted out of the game.
The police and Darlington FC are to be congratulated on a well-planned operation to protect the vast majority of supporters and local residents from those whose actions marred the occasion.
The police response, which was based on intelligence predicting significant problems, was proactive and proportionate and prevented ugly scenes from developing into something much worse.
We acknowledge the criticism The Northern Echo has received from some quarters over its reporting of the post-match violence. But the fact that mounted police officers were targeted by large gangs throwing bricks and glass is a matter of the utmost seriousness and we defend the prominence such dangerous violence was given in our coverage.
We made it clear in our coverage yesterday that most of the trouble and the arrests took place away from the ground. We also stated that only a minority of fans were responsible and we are happy to repeat those facts today.
Lessons can be learned from the first Darlington versus Hartlepool derby at the stadium in Neasham Road and improvements can always be made.
But it is important to recognise that, with the support of a well-planned police operation, Darlington is capable of hosting big matches.
In the meantime, we urge witnesses to the serious violent conduct of the mindless minority to help the police get them banned from every football ground in the country.

| Three-year match ban for Spurs fan - 30/03/2007
Source: http://icberkshire.icnetwork.co.uk THE out-of-control Tottenham fan who ran onto the pitch to throw a punch at England and Chelsea star Frank Lampard has been banned from football matches for three years.
Tim Smith, 18, from Ruscombe Gardens, Datchet, was hauled away from the White Hart Lane pitch and arrested after the FA Cup quarter-final as Chelsea celebrated their 2-1 win over Tottenham.
Millions of TV viewers watched Smith, who is thought to have spent all day drinking alcohol, sprint 50 yards past security guards and throw a wild punch at Lampard, 28.
Lampard dodged the punch though and Smith was swamped by security stewards.
Smith, a junior architect at Reading College, appeared to be angry at the way Chelsea players were celebrating their win.
Smith pleaded guilty to encroaching onto the pitch when he appeared at Haringey Magistrates, London, on Tuesday.
He was fined £300, banned from attending football matches for three years, and was ordered to pay £50 costs.
Tottenham had already banned Smith from White Hart Lane for life. The order means Smith cannot attend any regulated football matches in England or Wales.
He will also have to surrender his passport to police before overseas games.
Smith said: "It's all done with now, I just want to forget it."

| Spurs fan who 'punched' Lampard banned for life - 23/03/2007
Source: http://icberkshire.icnetwork.co.uk/
AN 18-YEAR-OLD football fan made the national headlines for all the wrong reasons on Monday when he attacked England star Frank Lampard.
Timothy Smith, a junior architect, of Ruscombe Gardens, Datchet, attacked the England and Chelsea hero live on television, in front of millions of viewers.
Smith, a Tottenham Hotspur fan, had just watched his side lose 2-1 to Chelsea in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup at White Hart Lane.
It was his last visit to the Tottenham ground as he has now been banned for life by Spurs' officials.
Once the final whistle was blown, Smith, who is thought to have been drunk, sprinted 50 yards past security guards and attempted a flying left-hook punch at Lampard, 28. He missed.
Lampard had been celebrating victory when Smith threw the punch, but the England midfielder ducked out of the way.
Smith, who lives at home with his mum, was then wrestled to the ground by Chelsea fitness coach Rui Faria, before being led away by stewards.
Smith was arrested and taken to Colindale police station, North London, where he spent the night. He will appear in court next Tuesday charged with encroaching the pitch, but not with assault.
Lampard, who has now joined the England squad in preparation for Saturday's World Cup qualifier with Israel, said: "When something like that happens it always shocks you. You don't expect it, but I'm pleased I got out of the way and nothing serious came out of what could have been a bad situation.
"We have to set a precedent to not let it happen again. They're treating it seriously."
Elizabeth Hawkes, borough councillor for Datchet, who used to live in Ruscombe Gardens, said: "Ruscombe Gardens is a very quiet road. This sort of attention is unheard of there.
"Datchet's ASBO and crime rate is declining but this gives the village a bad image.
"One incident like this makes people think Datchet is a bad place, when real-ly there are people here doing a lot of good things."
In support of Smith, Tottenham fans inundated radio phone-in shows with accusations that Chelsea players were goading them.
The Spurs fans claimed that Chelsea players, namely England captain John Terry, Frank Lampard, and Didier Drogba, were 'celebrating excessively'.
But Harry Redknapp, Portsmouth manager and Frank Lampard's uncle, was furious at Smith's action.
He said: "It was a disgrace. The guy should be locked away. Otherwise you'll get some loony run on the pitch and stick a knife into someone.
"He could have broken Frank's jaw. The police need to take strong action and make sure the next person thinks twice about doing the same thing."

| West Midlands: Blitz on the soccer louts - 16/03/2007
Source: Birmingham Mail
A POLICE taskforce has been set up to target soccer thugs heaping shame on Midland clubs.
Civil banning orders can be used against suspected hooligans, even if they haven't been arrested for brawling on a match day.
The Football Disorder Reduction team will apply to magistrates next month to have group of fans from across Birmingham barred from attending matches.
If successful, it will be the first time such orders have been successfully used in the West Midlands against yobs suspected of fomenting trouble.
Under the ban, yobs can be: n Excluded from an area around their team's stadium before and after a game. n Prevented from using public transport on a match day.
n Banned from travelling to a town or city where their club is playing.
Sgt Chris Austin, who leads the team, said: "This has brought a new angle to the policing of football in the West Midlands.
"We have some successful teams in the region and this is about providing protection to those fans who want to support their team in peace - and increase the entertainment value.
"They might seem quite drastic measures. It is a misunderstood law, particularly among the hooligan group who don't quite believe the powers we have."
Sgt Austin added: "The ultimate test for me is whether I would want these particular individuals sitting next to my 11-year-old son at a match."
The Football Disorder Reduction team was set up in January, with funding from the Home Office's UK Football Police Unit, to stamp out football-related trouble.
Until the team was set up West Midlands Police only applied for football banning orders upon conviction.
There are currently about 300 yobs banned from soccer grounds, including 60 convicted over sickening violence between Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion fans outside the Uplands pub, in Handsworth, in August 2004.
Now all they need for the civil ban, similar to an Asbo, is proof of previous convictions for violence and intelligence of their suspected involvement in trouble.
Sgt Austin said police had already written to known hooligans soccer warning them they were being monitored.
"They may claim to be like-minded individuals but what they do impacts on members of the public."

| England: Nurse 'encouraged football brawl' - 15/03/2007
Source: Birmingham Mail A NURSE helped orchestrate a "mass brawl" by a pack of Wolverhampton Wanderers fans in London's West End, a court has heard.
CCTV footage allegedly captured Clare Evans, 38, "encouraging and directing" up to 20 fellow football supporters to charge a much smaller group of men.
Only one of the attackers, who were in the capital following a match between Wolves and West Ham United, was arrested at the time.
London's Southwark Crown Court was told nearly all the rest were subsequently identified with the help of officers from the West Midlands police football intelligence unit.
Evans, formerly from Bearwood, Birmingham, but now of St Dials Road, Cwmbran, Gwent, denies one count of violent disorder on October 2, 2004.
Opening what is expected to be a two-day case, prosecutor David Povall, said he wanted to make it clear there was "no evidence she directly became involved in any fighting.
"The Crown says that Claire Evans was involved in encouraging others and directing them towards the targets, people they immediately attacked."
Those subsequently identified and detained, including Evans' 41-year-old fiance Gregory Elliott, of Slatch House Road, Bearwood, Birmingham, have since been dealt with for their involvement in the "mass fight".
"As far as Clare Evans is concerned.... she is an enthusiastic and genuine Wolverhampton Wanderers fan. There is no suggestion that her involvement in support of Wolverhampton Wanderers is anything but as a proper, genuine fan. We don't say Clare Evans is a football hooligan," said counsel.
"She is not somebody shown throwing punches or bottles. Her involvement is as an encourager or, as the charge says, aiding, abetting, counselling or procuring," he added.

| Ten football fans knifed in Chelsea battle - 12/03/2007
Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk A man remains in hospital today with wounds to the buttocks, after at least 10 people were stabbed as hardcore soccer violence erupted on the streets of west London.
Drinkers fled as running battles broke out between about 40 thugs carrying knives, baseball bats, wooden clubs embedded with nails and hockey sticks.
Police arrested 34 men, including seven who were taken to hospital suffering from stab wounds and head injuries.
All were later released except one, who remained in hospital today with stab wounds to the buttocks. His condition is not life-threatening.
The riot began outside the White Horse pub in Parsons Green, known as the "Sloaney Pony", following a dramatic FA Cup clash between Chelsea and Spurs.
Police believe it was either a prearranged fight organised over mobile phones and the internet or Tottenham hooligans had ambushed Chelsea fans "in their own backyard".
One witness said: "It was pandemonium, I've never seen scenes like it. It was a battlefield in the middle of Fulham's smartest area on a Sunday evening. I was on Parsons Green itself having a quiet drink with friends - nothing to do with the football.
"Suddenly there was a lot of loud shouting and screaming and we saw a huge mob fighting outside the Sloaney Pony, smashing each other with baseball bats and anything they could get their hands on. People were fleeing in all directions, it was chaos.
"I ran off down a street but could hear the rioting going on from half a mile away. About five minutes later the police sirens started and carried on all night."
Dozens of officers, including vans of riot police on standby and a police helicopter, were scrambled to the scene.
The injured men were taken to various west London hospitals. They included a 40-year-old from Plumstead who suffered head and chest injuries, a 52-yearold from Kentish Town, a 41-year-old from Chigwell and a 31-year-old from Bedfordshire.
There was no violence at the match, which was policed by 600 officers.
Huge crowds had gathered outside the White Horse in the afternoon after the match which is a traditional drinking venue on Chelsea match days.
The violence erupted at just after 8pm and took up to an hour to bring under control. Police recovered knives, baseball bats, wood laced with nails and hockey sticks.
A police source said: "Clearly there was a degree of organisation. These guys had not turned up with sticks and bats to play a game of hockey or baseball.
"We are trying to establish whether it was a pre-arranged setpiece fight or if it was one group of organised hooligans setting upon another.

| Three shot dead in Nigerian league riot - 27/03/2007Source: AFP Three people were killed when angry fans went on the rampage during a Nigerian league game played at the weekend, officials said Tuesday. "Policemen attached to Enyimba shot dead three fans," said Akwa Ibom state sports official Chris Ekong. "The police came to the stadium with live bullets and opened fire on fans when trouble began." Fans went on the rampage when referee Felicia Okwugba awarded a penalty in the dying minutes of a Premier League match involving host team Akwa United and Enyimba with Akwa United leading 2-1. They manhandled the referee leading policemen attached to Enyimba to open fire on them. They also set ablaze several vehicles parked at the stadium premises and clashed with police. On Monday, angry youths took to the streets destroying property and looking to hunt down people from the eastern part of Nigeria, where Enyimba are based. The Nigerian Football League (NFL) has since banned the Uyo Township Stadium where the match was played while Akwa United have been banished to Minna, northcentral Nigeria. A special three-man probe panel has also been set up by the NFL to fully investigate the fracas. | |

| Dutch hooligans jailed for attack - 06/03/2007Source: BBC Two Dutch football hooligans have been jailed for attacking Sheffield United fans during a pre-season game in Rotterdam last summer. The supporters were attacked by a gang near the Sparta Rotterdam stadium on 5 August. One suffered a head injury and the other was stabbed in the hand. The two men responsible for causing the injuries have both been jailed for four months, Dutch police have confirmed. Six other men received community work punishments of 200 hours each. All eight men received the Dutch equivalent of football banning orders and cannot attend matches for three years. South Yorkshire Police said last year's the incident was an unprovoked attack on fans drinking at a local bar after a confrontation between English and Dutch hooligans in the city centre earlier in the day. The two injured fans were entirely innocent and had been ambushed by hooligans from Dutch team Feyenoord, who were spoiling for trouble with Blades fans. "They were having a quiet drink and offered no provocation, but they were set upon and given a beating," said Supt Martin Hemingway of South Yorkshire Police, who had been in the Netherlands working with Dutch officers during the tour. "The Dutch police have been superb throughout this matter. "Their reaction on the night was exceptional in ensuring that all of the English fans were protected after the game until they reached their destinations. "They have then followed up with an investigation that identified all of the culprits and managed a challenging court case involving evidence from foreign witnesses." Brigadier Harrie Wilemstijn, of the Rijnmond Police in Holland, said: "We were able to investigate this case so effectively because of the film that was taken of the incident by the South Yorkshire Police officers who accompanied the English fans." | |

| 10 Sellick fans arrested after Aberdeen hotel brawl - 31/10/2008
Source : The Times
Police arrest 24 football fans after hotel brawl
Police have arrested 24 football fans following a mass brawl between rival hooligans. The disturbance took place outside a hotel at the end of a match between Aberdeen and Celtic.
Police said there were up to 60 fans involved in the “large-scale” fight on February 17.
Following a joint operation between the Grampian and Strathclyde police forces, 24 people have been arrested and charged and a further six interviewed. They include fans from Grampian, Tayside, Lothian and Borders, and Strathclyde force areas as well as from Dublin and England. A Grampian Police spokesman said 14 Aberdeen fans and ten Celtic fans had been charged for their involvement in the disturbance.
Police were called to the Gordon Hotel in Altens on the outskirts of Aberdeen at 2.15pm on the day of the match at Pittodrie. It followed a report of a fight involving between 50 and 60 supporters from both teams in the car park. There were no serious injures.
Superintendent Adrian Watson, of Grampian Police, said: “This is again a clear illustration of how Scottish forces are working together to combat football hooliganism. We shall be reporting 24 men in connection with this incident to the procurator fiscal. Inquiries to trace others continue.”
Chief Superintendent Kenny Scott, of Strathclyde Police, said: “The results of the joint operation between Strathclyde and Grampian forces have been very encouraging. Antisocial behaviour around football matches will not be tolerated and police forces will continue to target those groups who cause trouble in the lead-up to, during and after matches. Where appropriate, police will seek football banning orders in respect of any individual found guilty of offences. This will ensure their exclusion from football matches in the future.”
