UEFA fine Levski for fans' racist slurs - 30/04/2006

Source: Reuters

Levski Sofia have been fined 35,000 euros (24,000 pounds) by UEFA for racist behaviour by some of their fans during the UEFA Cup quarter-final home leg against Germany's Schalke 04, the Bulgarian club said on Sunday.

Levski fans booed and whistled visiting coloured player Gerald Asamoah before and during the March 30 match which Schalke won 3-1 to qualify for the semi-finals 4-2 on aggregate.

Club owner Todor Batkov has been banned for two matches for making remarks about English referee Mike Riley after the match. Batkov also has been fined 3,200 euros.

UEFA imposed a further fine of 6,400 euros on Levski for their owner's comment.

"The sanctions are tendentious," said Levski chief executive Konstantin Bazhdekov. "We will discuss the situation and we will decide on Monday if we are going to appeal."

La Louvière - RSC Charleroi - 30/04/2006

Source: mails

Charleroi view

About 40 Charleroi Boys arrived soon in La Louviere. We decided to found a pub near the stadium and we passed in front of the Green Boys pub but these lads are only youth (17 years old). They went out of the pub but re-entered so quickly. We continued our way when 2 cavalry men stopped some of us. Finally we mobbed up in another street but policemen arrived from everywhere and we splitted in several little groups. Some are taken by cops and pushed in the ultras escort....4 others entered the main La Louviere pub and proposed a toe-to-toe, refused by locals.
Inside the stadium, nothing to mentionned.
At the end of the game, we went out and took the direction of a pub were locals were spotted but there's too many cops and spotters.
When we came back to our cars, with our spotters, a local mob arrived in front of us...Only a few of us are in this street. Locals charged and punches were exchanged...before our main mob arrived. A good toe-to-toe took place for 30 seconds, where we stayed with 20 in front of about 40, before a police intervention. Finally, 32 locals were arrested and we took our way back to Charleroi.
Thanks to Wolf-siders for beeing there....in was the first time...

Emelec - FC Barcelona - 30/04/2006

Source : REÜTERS

Rioting fans forced the Ecuadorean derby between Emelec and Barcelona to be abandoned at the weekend.

Barcelona fans destroyed the toilets, attacked the press box and forced the match at Emelec to be abandoned in the 50th minute on Sunday.

Media reports said 40 people were injured and nine arrested. The violence continued outside the Capwell stadium in Guayaquil when rival fans clashed in the streets.

Trouble broke out when striker Luis Escalada scored in the 47th minute to put Emelec 3-0 ahead.

A linesman was struck by part of a wash-basin which had been vandalised while radio reporters fled as the hooligans smashed the windows of their commentary boxes.

The remaining 40 minutes are due to be played on Monday behind closed doors.

Blackpool: Arrests made over football violence - 06/04/2006

Source: This is Lancashire

Police have swooped on suspected Blackpool football hooligans after the worst violence at a Seasiders game in years.

Large-scale violence before the game against Nottingham Forest in February saw almost 200 people involved in fights around the Castle pub on Central Drive.

A further 75 fans fought outside the Swift Hound pub, Rigby Road, after the game - both fights are understood to have been instigated by groups from Blackpool.

continued...
Seven people were arrested in raids yesterday in Blackpool and Lytham (Wednesday), and police say they anticipated making further arrests.

Computer equipment was seized and officers are probing links between the fighting and sinister websites which promote hooliganism. One such website has already been removed from the internet.

"Football violence on this scale is almost unheard of in Blackpool," said Insp Keith Ogle, who is leading the investigation for Lancashire Police.

"This has been an isolated incident involving a large number of people who have clearly been intent on causing violence and disorder throughout the day.

"The football club have assured us that they will continue to support our strong stance with regard to football disorder and will ban any Blackpool supporter found to be behaving in an inappropriate manner."

Insp Ogle warned that fans found guilty of football violence would face a football banning order which would bar them from every ground in England and Wales for three years and possibly force them to give up their passport to prevent them travelling to international fixtures.

Police have been investigating video and CCTV recordings since the day of the match on February 4. They say that between 60 and 80 Blackpool supporters and 100 Forest fans fought at The Castle while 50 Blackpool fans and 25 Forest supporters were involved in the Swift Hound incident.

It is understood that the investigation has focused on Blackpool supporters and that no arrests are expected in Nottingham.

Bloomfield Road has a history of violent incidents from the 1970s and 80s, including the murder of local teenager, Kevin Olsson, on the terraces in 1974 and a day of rioting involving Birmingham City fans in 1989.

However, Blackpool has long been considered a relatively safe' ground for visiting fans - although hooligans from other parts of the country have, in the past, arranged fights in the resort.

Scotland: Cup trouble fears force pub closures - 01/04/2006

Source: The Scotsman

SOME city centre pubs are to close early tomorrow amid fears of trouble when fans return from the crunch Scottish Cup semi-final.

Pubs on Rose Street, as well as many at Easter Road, have opted to avoid any possible trouble and simply shut up shop before the crowds get back from Glasgow.

And other pubs in the Grassmarket and George Street have hired extra security to ensure the troublemakers are kept away from their bars.

It comes as Hibs and Hearts fans were warned to leave plenty of time to travel to the game as an estimated 40,000 fans head west.

The majority of fans are heading to the game by road and traffic on the M8 is expected to be very heavy with the approaches to Hampden Park also expected to clog up quickly.

Police chiefs in Glasgow also today warned a bylaw prohibiting the drinking of alcohol in public places will be strictly enforced around the stadium.

In Edinburgh, many pubs have admitted they are not sure what to expect, with some hopeful that the fans will all come back in the mood for a good-natured celebration - whatever the score.

The police have already said they will be out in numbers to deal with the fans going to and coming from Hampden.

Breck's on Rose Street is one of a handful pubs, including the Rose Street Brewery, closing at 5pm on Sunday to avoid any potential flashpoints.

Brecks assistant manager Will Drummond said: "We are closing because we have heard a lot of bad reports from previous derby games.

"Some people say there will be no sign of trouble at all but generally there is a feeling amongst the pub owners here that it might not be worth the risk of opening up."

Daniel Bee, manager of Bar 38 on George Street, said: "We will have extra security on the door. We are not expecting to get huge crowds along here as we are not really a football pub, but it is a precaution we felt we should take."

Others in the area are not so concerned, however, and Alan McKellar, duty manager of Dirty Dicks pub in Rose Street, said: "We don't allow football colours in so that can stop a lot of the troublemakers.

"There will be a massive police presence around Rose Street so we are not concerned about crowd trouble."

And despite several bars on Easter Road closing their doors after concerns about football violence, the Iona Bar was staying open and expected to have big day as a result.

Staff member Karen McDougall said: "We will be open all day and I certainly hope it is a good crowd, and a good score. We're not expecting to get any trouble, we always have football crowds in and it's normally fine."

Around 3000 fans will make the trip by rail, including four football specials, and hundreds of fans are staying over in Glasgow ahead of tomorrow's 12.15pm kick-off.

Both sets of fans travelling by road have been allocated different parts of the area around Hampden to park in.

But Hearts fans will be hit by delays in the Shawlands area of Glasgow because of road closures.

Minard Road is closed because of work to a railway bridge and a diversion route is in place but police are warning that delays may occur.

Neil Greig, head of policy with the AA, said: "Our advice to supporters travelling by road would be give yourselves plenty of time to get through to Glasgow.

"There are no major roadworks between Edinburgh and Glasgow so travel along the M8 should be fine but it is never predictable.

"The extra trains are a welcome measure and fans should make use of them if they can.

"Parking at Hampden can be difficult at the best of times so make sure enough time is allowed for that as well."

Police chiefs in Edinburgh are also warning the Capital's roads are likely to be congested with fans travelling to and from the big match.

A spokesman said: "We anticipate that there will be thousands of vehicles, such as cars and coaches, leaving Edinburgh from around 8am on Sunday morning.

"Traffic will be heavier than expected for a Sunday morning and we anticipate a similar problem in the afternoon from around 3pm onwards as fans return to the Capital.

"There will be heavy congestion on the approach roads to the west of the city, particularly the M8, and we would advise people to remain patient if they get stuck in any queues.

"There will be a heavy police presence in the city centre on Sunday to ensure that people can go about their normal Sunday business as usual."

Experts on the city's football casuals from the Lothian and Borders force are liaising with Strathclyde Police to ensure any troublemakers are picked out when they get to Glasgow. And Chief Superintendent Robin Howe, the senior officer in charge of the derby clash, has warned fans that drinking bylaws and a ban on booze on buses and trains will be strictly enforced.

He said: "It is an exciting time for the fans and my priority is their safety, that of the public and to make sure everyone gets to the ground to enjoy the match and then get home safely.

"Hearts fans travelling to the city by special football train from Slateford will arrive at Central Station, from there, in order to ensure a smooth transition, fans will be ushered immediately on to another train to Mount Florida. The vast majority of people attending football matches do so to enjoy themselves.

"However, be assured that anyone intent on causing disorder will be dealt with.

"I would also remind everyone that there are bylaws in place prohibiting the drinking of alcohol in public places and that alcohol and controlled containers of any kind - cans or bottles - are not allowed in the stadium."

The four "specials" trains hired to shuttle 1700 supporters to the match are virtually sold out.

Only three regular services, which will accommodate around 1500 fans, are due to leave Waverley Station during the morning for Glasgow.

Train tickets will be allocated on a "first-come-first-served" basis and additional supporters will be turned away.

Supporters will be asked to queue up for train tickets which are to be allocated on the morning of the tie.

A spokesman for First ScotRail urged fans to turn up early for the scheduled services.

He said: "We would advise people to get to the station early to avoid disappointment because tickets will be issued on a first-come-first-served basis.

"It would also be sensible for supporters and members of the public to make alternative arrangements in case they do not get on to the trains going to Glasgow."

Tunisian hooligans handed heavy sentences - 10/04/2006

Source: Turkish Daily News

A group of 21 football hooligans have been handed prison sentences of between three to six years, a judicial source said in the capital Tunis on Sunday. The supporters were convicted in connection with fighting which broke out between fans of first division title rivals Etoile of Sahel and Tunis side Esperance a fortnight ago. In all police made 29 arrests when the two sets of supporters clashed at a motorway toll station leaving one child with serious injuries. A verdict on the remaining eight fans is expected on Monday.

Wigan vs Bolton - Police make appeal after gangs clash at railway station - 21/04/2006

Source: Bolton Evening News

A MASS brawl at a Wigan railway station may have been caused by football hooligans, police have said.

The clash at Wigan Wallgate station happened after Wigan football fans, travelling back after the side's away match against Newcastle United, clashed with another gang who got on the same train at Bolton.

Trouble flared on the train then fighting broke out on the platform as the train stopped, with bottles thrown and a booking office window smashed.

One man in his 30s suffered a serious eye injury and was taken to Wigan Royal Infirmary. A number of other men suffered minor injuries.

Police are now looking at CCTV evidence to find out who was responsible for the trouble, which happened at around 10.30pm on April 14. Anyone with information should call British Transport Police on 0800 405040 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Newcastle: Banned superfan due back in court - 17/04/2006

Source: The Evening Chronicle

Banned Toon "superfan" Terry Mann has been ordered before the courts again. Mann and his wife Yvonne have been charged with receiving satellite television through a fraudulent decoder at their pub, the Adelphi, on Shakespeare Street, Newcastle.

The alleged offence was committed on Tuesday February 14.

Last year, Mann, then 45, of Brunton Avenue, Fawdon, Newcastle, was banned from entering any football ground in England or Wales for three years and fined £5,000 after being caught on camera assaulting an FC Breda fan in 2003.

Mann's ban was ordered when police released a video of the clash between Newcastle and Breda fans on October 15 2003 which saw 87 Toon fans locked up, one of the worst cases of hooliganism in United's history.

The tapes also led to 20 other Newcastle troublemakers being banned and warned others who escaped the net of a tough crackdown.

Northumbria Police's Sgt Andy Cross, who was at the fixture and in court to see Mann banned, said: "There was a line of police officers against which Terry Mann was pushing. I also saw him shouting and screaming at rival supporters and behaving in a manner I can only describe as being like a wild animal."

The father-of-three has a long history of terrace violence including a conviction for assaulting a fellow Toon fan.

Mann was well-known among Toon fans for his collection of Magpies memorabilia in his pub the Adelphi - which is at the centre of his latest charge.

At the hearing which saw him banned, at Newcastle Crown Court in August 2005, the court heard Mann was also involved in scenes of violence in Sunderland city centre before the derby clash at the Stadium of Light in April 2001.

The court was shown CCTV of him arriving at Sunderland train station before being arrested. And he also travelled to Rotterdam for the Magpies' clash with Feyenoord in 2002.

Giving evidence, Sgt Paul Evans, head of the Police Football Intelligence Unit, told how trained spotters had seen him with known hooligans, chanting offensive songs in Amsterdam. And at a match against Bayer Leverkeusen in Germany in February 2003, police officers told the court they had heard Mann chanting: "Attack, attack, attack Iraq".

Mann was found guilty of breaking a fellow fan's nose inside St James' Park at a match between Newcastle and Sunderland in 2000. He was convicted of assault causing actual bodily harm, fined £1,000 and ordered to pay £1,000 compensation.

Both Terry and Yvonne Mann are due to appear before Gosforth magistrates on May 16 to face their latest charges.

Blackpool vs Nottingham Forest: Arrests made over football violence - 06/04/2006

Source: http://www.blackpoolcitizen.co.uk

Police have swooped on suspected Blackpool football hooligans after the worst violence at a Seasiders game in years.

Large-scale violence before the game against Nottingham Forest in February saw almost 200 people involved in fights around the Castle pub on Central Drive.

A further 75 fans fought outside the Swift Hound pub, Rigby Road, after the game - both fights are understood to have been instigated by groups from Blackpool.

Argentine soccer fans' gunfight injures 15, 123 arrested - 11/04/2006

Source: Xinhua

BUENOS AIRES -- Argentine police arrested 123 soccer fans after 15 people were injured in an armed clash between fans of Boca Juniors and rival team Rosario Central on an Argentine highway, the country's police told media on Monday.

The police said the gunfight began at midnight on Sunday, close to the General Lagos toll on the Rosario-Buenos Aires highway, when Boca Juniors fans returning from a Boca-Colon match in the Buenos Aires state city of Santa Fe, ran into followers of Rosario Central returning from a Rosario-Banfield match in greater Buenos Aires.

The police arrested fans and took them to the Rosario Country House police station, and carried the injured to the Clemente Alvarez and Centenario hospitals.

Only three of the injured were severly hurt, suffering bullet wounds to the head. They were looked after in the San Nicolas Hospital intensive care unit.

The incident is similar to an April 2003 fatal clash between fans of Newell's Old Boys and River Plate, on Highway 9, close to the Buenos Aires state city of Zarate, which killed two Rosario fans and left 13 more people injured.

In the 2003 case, fans were travelling to away games: to Rosario in the case of River and to Buenos Aires for a Boca match for the Newell's fans.
