| Matches abandoned after violence - 02/04/2005
Source : BBC News
Football chiefs in mid Wales have launched an inquiry after small rural league match erupted into violence.
Players and spectators were involved in a mass brawl in a Ceredigion league cup encounter on Good Friday. It followed a similar incident between two other teams and their supporters in January. Referees were forced to abandon both games. An inquiry is now under way into the latest outbreak of violence. On Good Friday, trouble flared during an under-18 match between Pencader, from Carmarthenshire, and St Dogmaels, from Pembrokeshire, after two youths ran onto the pitch to argue with a St Dogmaels player. Others became involved and the referee was forced to abandon the game after 54 minutes. The violence followed another incident during a senior game on 22 January between New Quay reserves and Maesglas reserves, from Cardigan, when a fan invaded the pitch. At one point, up to 30 people were alleged to have traded blows on the field of play. That match was abandoned after 20 minutes. New Quay was later fined £250 and £50 costs, while Maesglas was fined £50 and ordered to pay £25 costs after an internal disciplinary hearing. League chairman Peter Davies said the Central Wales Football Association (FA) would investigate the latest incident and the guilty club would be heavily fined. "The latest incident in hugely disappointing especially as it's the second such incident in the matter of months," Mr Davies said. "I urge clubs, players and fans to keep calm during matches. "Spectators just cannot run onto the pitch - everyone just has to stay in control, otherwise we'll have to take action to prevent further trouble." Mr Davies refused to speculate on the league's possible course of action. Malcolm Eaton, secretary of the Central Wales FA's disciplinary committee, said he was aware of the latest incident. "I expect the disciplinary hearing, which both clubs will attend, will be held a week next Wednesday or Thursday at Llanidloes Town Hall," he said. "I have not received the referee's report yet, but I've spoken to him and he said it's on its way. "This is the second case of its type in a matter of a few months. We don't know what triggers the incidents, but it's usually something that happens on the pitch." _________________

| Sydney soccer fans arrested after clash - 30/04/2005
Source: ABC Sport
Police have made several arrests at a New South Wales Premier League soccer match, where fans of two Sydney teams have clashed for the second time in two months.
About 50 Bonnyrigg White Eagles fans have attacked a bus of Sydney United fans with sticks and rocks, as the two groups met outside Parramatta Stadium after the match this afternoon.
The White Eagles fans were chased away by about 20 police and half a dozen mounted police.
Fans also rioted when the same two teams played each other last month, injuring 11 police.
Today the two groups were to be kept apart by being made to leave the ground at separate times.
But it is understood the bus for the Sydney United fans was running late.
Bonnyrigg White Eagles won the match, 4-1. _________________

| Clubs face expulsion after soccer fans clash - 19/04/2005Source: Fairfax Digital Two elite Victorian soccer clubs face expulsion after fans clashed at their Premier League match in Melbourne on Sunday night. South Melbourne and Preston supporters threw flares and pelted each other with darts and coins during the game and about 100 fans invaded the pitch at Bob Jane Stadium after Preston scored a goal. A wheelie bin was thrown at a police horse and officers were struck in the head with water bottles and other objects as they tried to quell the unruly crowd. Four police were injured. Acting Superintendent Chris Duthie said the crowd's behaviour was "very disappointing". Two people were arrested for assault and throwing flares and 11 people were ejected from the stadium. Australian Football Federation chief executive John O'Neill urged the game's Victorian governing body to throw the book at the two clubs. He said their supporters had damaged the image of the game. His state counterpart, Tony Pignata, said an inquiry had been launched and pledged the disciplinary tribunal would consider the harshest penalties available. These include expulsion from the league, loss of competition points and/or fines. Both clubs will also be fined for the number of flares thrown: the standard penalty is $500 a flare. Sunday was the first time in 12 years that South Melbourne had played Preston for championship points. South Melbourne has mainly ethnic Greek supporters while Preston supporters are almost exclusively of Macedonian background. Mr O'Neill said unruly behaviour by supporters would not be tolerated. "The message that the national governing body wants to send out to these people is that there is no place for them in football," he said. Police will meet league and club officials this week and review security at the stadium, the clubs' liquor licences and other measures that could help prevent future violence. _________________ | |

| Inter Milan penalized for fan violence - 16/04/2005
Source: CBC
Italian soccer team Inter Milan was ordered Friday to play its next four home games in European competition in an empty stadium after fan violence forced its Champions League quarter-final contest to be suspended.
In addition to having to play the games in their home stadium without any fans in the stands, Inter Milan was also levied a $310,000 Cdn fine by Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), European soccer's governing body.
UEFA also warned that more instances of fan violence at Inter Milan home games in European competition over the next three years would result in the club playing another two games without spectators in their home stadium.
Friday's ruling was in response to this past Tuesday's game between Inter Milan and city rivals AC Milan. The game took an ugly turn in the 73rd minute when a lit flare tossed from the stands by an Inter Milan fan hit AC Milan goalkeeper Dida squarely on his right shoulder and sent him crashing to the ground.
Inter Milan fans continued to litter the field with flares, bottles and other projectiles, forcing the game to be suspended with AC Milan leading 1-0.
UEFA decided to award AC Milan, who won the first game of the two-game playoff 2-0, with a 3-0 forfeit victory in Tuesday's contest. AC Milan, the reigning Italian champions, will now face Dutch side PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League semifinals.
UEFA communications director William Gaillard refuted claims that Inter Milan escaped with a mere slap on the wrist.
"There will be some people who think that it is lenient and other people who think that it is harsh," Gaillard told the BBC.
"This is the highest fine in the history of UEFA and the loss of four home games will mean they lose out on revenue for around 8 million euros ($12.9 million Cdn).
"You have to put it in the context of the game. There were no further injuries apart from a very slight one to the goalkeeper which we absolutely regret, and it is a very hefty punishment compared to anything in the last five years."
There was speculation Inter Milan would be expelled from European competition next season, but in the end, UEFA decided to exact a form of punishment that is common in soccer.
Last September, AS Roma's home game against Ukrainian side Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League was halted when referee Anders Frisk was bloodied after being hit by a metal object thrown from the stands.
UEFA took swift action against AS Roma, forcing the Italian club to play its next two home games without a single spectator in the stands at Rome's Olympic Stadium.
Tuesday's incident was not the first time Inter fans have caused havoc. In a 2001 home game against Italian side Atalanta, some Inter Milan supporters stole a motor scooter from an opposing fan, set it on fire, and hurled it onto the field from the second level of Milan's Giuseppe Meazza Stadium. _________________

| Two hurt in ferry riot after Old Firm match - 26/04/2005
Source: The Scotsman
CHRIS MCAULEY SECTARIAN violence erupted across the west of Scotland in the wake of the final Old Firm game of the season, Strathclyde Police said yesterday.
In a series of bloody clashes in the aftermath of Celtic’s 2-1 victory at Ibrox, shoppers were left shaken as fans fought running battles in Glasgow, Lanarkshire and Dunbartonshire.
A riot broke out on the Troon to Larne ferry service as rival fans clashed on their return journey to Northern Ireland after the game. Up to 100 people were reported to have been involved, and riot police were forced to board the ferry to quell the disturbance.
Two members of the crew were injured, and three men and one woman were arrested.
Police said they had made 20 arrests at Sunday afternoon’s game - with more than half of those detained charged with sectarian-related offences.
A police spokeswoman said: "There were 20 arrests in total before and during the match, with 10 of those for offences relating to sectarian breach of the peace.
"There were five arrests relating to drink, and another five arrests for other breach of the peace offences.
"It was a relatively busy night but we had sufficient resources to cope with those taken into custody."
In an attempt head off the ever-present threat of violence surrounding the Old Firm fixture, the teams had been instructed by police to kick-off at 12:30pm in a bid to stop fans turning up drunk at the ground.
But as supporters headed for the pubs after the game, an unsavoury display of violence erupted across the country.
Immediately after the game, running street battles were reported in the Govanhill and Myrtle Park areas of Glasgow and Uddingston, Lanarkshire.
On Sunday night, motorists in Dunbartonshire were forced to take evasive action as a fight between rival fans outside a Clydebank bar spilled out on to the street.
Sunday’s match always had the potential for trouble, especially as its outcome was vital in the close-fought race for the SPL title.
There were calls last night for the courts to clamp down hard on those involved in the violence.
Bill Aitken, a list MSP for Glasgow and the Tories’ chief whip at Holyrood, said: "People should be able to go about their business without having to worry about getting caught up in this sort of violence.
"This behaviour is disgraceful and paints a bleak picture of the tribalism which still persists in Scotland. The courts have a clear duty to crack down on those who bring terror to the country’s streets.
"People need to be reminded that it is only a game and not part two of the battle of the Boyne.
"But, frankly, I fear that the Old Firm games are just an excuse for some people to indulge in mindless violence."
The incident on the Troon-Larne ferry occurred as the vessel left the Ayrshire town on Sunday night, with riot police called in after fighting broke out between rival fans.
There were 350 passengers on board the ferry, and as many as 100 fans of both Glasgow clubs were allegedly involved in the fighting.
After police boarded the P&O ferry it took them around an hour to bring the fighting under control.
The latest violence comes just weeks after the Scottish Executive vowed to clamp down on the bigotry that surrounds Old Firm games.
Last Friday, Cathy Jamieson, the justice minister, urged Old Firm supporters to keep the match free of bigotry.
Her appeal came as the Executive published an official summary of a high profile anti-sectarianism summit organised by the Jack McConnell, the First Minister, in Glasgow in February.
The minister said that while much had been done to rid Scotland of the "stain" of sectarianism, the pace of change needed to speed up.
The Executive has brought in legislation making provision for offences aggravated by religious prejudice.
Funding has also been given to voluntary groups and church organisations for community-based and inter-faith projects tackling sectarian attitudes. _________________

| Old Firm fans clash on Troon-Larne ferry - 25/04/2005
Source: 4ni.co.uk Rival football fans returning on a ferry from Scotland to Northern Ireland at the weekend have violently clashed.
Up to 100 Celtic and Rangers fans were involved in fighting which took place on the ferry shortly after leaving Troon on Sunday evening. Police boarded the boat when it docked in Larne at about 9.45pm and arrested three men and one woman for assault and disorderly behaviour. Two crew members received treatment for minor injuries. Earlier in the day rival supporters of both clubs clashed at the junction of Cromac Street and Ormeau Avenue in Belfast. One police officer received a minor leg injury and three police vehicles were damaged. A man and a woman were arrested. Police believe youths from the Markets and Donegall Pass areas were involved in the disturbances, which lasted several hours. _________________

| Caf sanctions clubs - 03/04/2005
Source: BBC
Caf has fined Ivorian club Africa Sport and Cameroon's Racing Baffousam for crowd trouble at their Champions League game on 19 March.
Fining the clubs the respective sums of US$5,000 and $3,000, the Robert Champroux Stadium in Abidjan was also banned from hosting further Caf games.
But a specified period for the ban was not given by African football's governing body.
The sanctions come after Bafoussam filed a protest on 23 March, alleging poor treatment at the hands of the Ivorian police during the second leg of their second-round tie.
Caf confirmed the incidents between Bafoussam's players and the security forces, which led to Kouma Ignace being admitted to hospital, after receiving a blow to his face.
The decision to fine Africa Sport and Racing Bafoussam was taken by Caf's disciplinary committtee on Thursday but was only made public on Sunday.
Africa Sport were fined for "not taking necessary security measures in organising the game", said Caf's official statement.
Racing Bafoussam were sanctioned for "not complying with rules governing team jerseys during the technical meeting.
"[This] was the genesis of tension inside the dressing room before the match kick-off," Caf said.
Youmsi Pierre, who plays for Bafoussam, was also handed a one-match ban for getting onto the pitch after being substituted.
Misseck Jacques, a Bafoussam official reprimanded for his poor conduct, is banned from attending all Caf matches for a period of one year.
The clubs have a three-day grace period, from the day they were officially notified of the sanctions, to appeal against the ruling of Caf's disciplinary committee.
But as the 3-1 win of Africa Sport was confirmed, the standings in Africa's top club competition will stand.

| Nuneaton Borough - Kettering Town - 30/04/2005
Source: Evening Telegraph - http://www.northantset.co.uk/
Man in hospital after football fans' violence
FOOTBALL fan was taken to hospital with a broken skull after a violent brawl between rival supporters. Police in riot gear with shields and batons confronted a crowd of more than 100 rival fans throwing flares, bricks, bottles and glasses before Kettering Town's away game against Nuneaton Borough on Saturday at about 1.15pm. The trouble started outside the Nag's Head pub in Nuneaton. Two Kettering Town football fans were taken to hospital following the riot. A 38-year-old man from Kettering was hit on the head by a missile and taken to Walsgrave Hospital in Coventry with a suspected broken skull. He was detained and is in a stable condition. And a 35-year-old man, also from Kettering, wastaken to the George Elliot Hospital in Nuneaton for treatment for cuts to his face. He was later released. More than 80 officers from Leicestershire, Warwickshire and the West Midlands forces dealt with the violence. One onlooker who was making his way to the match shortly after the incident said: "We arrived close to the ground at about 2.30pm and the road had been blocked by police. We then saw the Nag's Head pub which looked as though it had been completely trashed. "Then we saw police escorting about 100 Kettering fans back to the train station." Two men from Warwickshire were arrested after the Nationwide North game, which ended in a 2-0 defeat for the Poppies. Police kept about 600 Kettering supporters in the ground for 30 minutes after the game before escorting the fans to trains and coaches. Anyone with any information about the riot can Det Sgt Andy Dodds on 01926 415000.
