St Truiden - La Louvière - 01/06/2003 - Cupfinal - match played in Brussels

Source: mails

Lads from both teams were not in large number for this final cup game (approx 25 on each side). It seems Jongere Garde St Truiden threw chairs at La Louvière fans before the game but nothing else happened.

Here is a STVV fan view:
We have threw some chairs and also some fireworks... Our full mob was with 50-60 lads...
After the match ther was a little riot in the station of Brussels...15 lads of us La Louviere make a runner and 4 lads were arrested.

Here is a RAAL fan view:
About 30 La Louvière fans arrived at 10.30am in the city centre of Brussels. We stayed there in a pub but a fight erutped, opposing 15 of us to 40 STVV lads, joined by their friends from Beerschot. Chairs, firecrackers...were threw at each other. After we stayed in front of them, we decided to charge them and they had to retreat. After the fight, 2 of them came to us, telling we had beaten them. After that, 6 of us were arrested.

Hungarian club Ferencvarosi TC have been fined - 12/06/2003

Source: Reuters

Hungarian club Ferencvarosi TC have been fined €18,000 and ordered to play their home games behind closed doors until the end of the year following a pitch invasion last month. The club's chief executive officer Jozsef Szeiler was also fined €12,000 as the Football League's disciplinary body handed out one of the toughest penalties seen in Hungary, which does not have a long history of football violence. Dozens of angry fans rampaged at the end of Ferencvaros's final league game of the season against Debreceni VSC on May 30 - a goalless draw which allowed Budapest rivals MTK Hungaria FC to clinch the championship. Ferencvaros finished runners-up after MTK won 1-0 at Ujpesti TE on the same day.Supporters kicked and punched the Debrecen coach, players, stewards and the media. They then turned on some of their own club's players who had tried to intervene. Two Ferencvaros players - striker Attila Tokoli and goalkeeper Lajos Szucs - later pulled out of Hungary's national squad. Both said they were in no frame of mind to play and invited offers from foreign clubs. The disciplinary body said the general public would be barred from watching Ferencvaros home games at the Ulloi uti stadium until next year. Ferencvaros fans will only be allowed at the club's away games if they have a valid official identification pass.

Small bomb goes off at Argentina club Huracan - 12/06/2003

Source: Reuters

Small home-made bomb exploded at the headquarters of relegated Argentine club Huracan on Thursday, four days before their derby match against arch-rivals San Lorenzo, the club's president said. Marcelo Buenaga said the artefact went off at the front entrance to the club and damaged a door. Nobody was hurt. Meetings between the two clubs are always tense and police have ordered Sunday's game to be played at 11 o'clock in the morning for security reasons. San Lorenzo fans have said they will go to the match dressed in black to "mourn" the fate of Huracan, which was sealed when they lost 4-0 at home to Boca Juniors last week. "We are still trying to pull ourselves together from one bad moment and now we have to bear another," said Buenaga. Last October, Huracan evacuated their headquarters after receiving a bomb threat. A police bomb squad was called and it was found to be a false alarm. The threat came days after a giant flag, measuring 70 metres by 40 metres, was stolen from the San Lorenzo headquarters.

Trouble should not mar Nigeria 2010 bid - 12/06/2003

Source: Reuters

Problems surrounding Nigeria's 3-0 defeat by Brazil should not be allowed to affect the populous West African country's bid to host the 2010 World Cup finals, Nigerian analysts said Thursday. Nigeria, Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia and favourites South Africa are bidding to stage the first World Cup finals on the African continent, but the shambolic organization of Wednesday's match has cast doubts over Nigeria's capacity to host the event especially after a host of similar incidents during the African Nations Cup three years ago, which Nigeria co-hosted with Ghana. The Brazil game was marred by crowd trouble and tear gas wafted around the Abuja stadium after police fired canisters of the chemical to disperse angry fans who had valid tickets, but could not gain admittance even after kick-off. "Certainly this is not how to organize a big game like this. The organisers and police were simply overwhelmed by the crowd and did not know what to do," Abuja-based sports analyst Yusuf Lawal Mohammed told Reuters. "But it will be wrong to use this to measure our competence to host the World Cup in 2010 because we successfully hosted the junior World Cup in 1999," Mohammed said. Local organisers testing facilities for the All-African Games in October, said they had tightened security at the stadium after it was vandalised by angry fans during the June 7 African Nations Cup qualifier between Nigeria and Malawi. Organising committee spokesman, Fan Ndubuoke, said people had problems getting into the new stadium because many of them are still unfamiliar with the giant complex and could not easily locate their designated gates. "It was not the problem of crowd control as much as it was a problem of people having difficulties in accessing the stadium," Ndubuoke said. "It will be wrong to use this to measure our World Cup bid. People should come to the Games and see how well we can organize big events. That will be the best way to test us," Ndubuoke added. Nigerian organisation of the 2000 Nations Cup was declared a disaster by most observers after riots and chaos at almost every match at the National Stadium in Lagos. Police fired shots and teargas as thousands of fans, wielding sticks and other objects, went on the rampage after Nigeria lost on penalties in the final to Cameroon, while media photographers reported being mugged on the pitch after the police disappeared when the game ended. Trouble began at Nigeria's first match against Tunisia when journalists brawled in the interview area. After drawing 0-0 with Congo in their next outing, Nigerian players were locked inside their dressing room for their own safety as a mob of their own supporters, who also threw bottles onto the pitch during the game, gathered outside to protest. Nigeria's quarter-final against Senegal was interrupted when thousands of fans rushed onto the pitch after Nigeria scored in extra time, having been wrongly informed that the golden goal rule was being applied. Play was halted for 10 minutes before the pitch could be cleared. Senegal's players, clearly unnerved and angry at the situation, considered retreating to their dressing room but eventually decided to play on.

UEFA to probe Turkey crowd trouble - 12/06/2003

Source: AP

Turkey could be fined or ordered to play its next game in an empty stadium after fans threw objects onto the field during a 2004 European Championship qualifying game against Macedonia in Istanbul. Macedonia midfielder Sasko Lazarevski was hit on the head by an object Wednesday after teammates unfurled a flag following a goal that put it ahead 2-1. Turkey won the game 3-2. Riot police held up shields to protect Macedonia players taking corner kicks. UEFA spokesman Mike Lee said Thursday the European governing body is investigating the crowd trouble and will consider whether to penalize Turkey at a meeting next month. ``From what we've seen so far we think there's a basis for disciplinary proceedings,'' he said. ``There were missiles thrown. That is absolutely a breach of regulations.'' UEFA's main concern is the qualifying game against England on Oct. 11 in Turkey. Fearing trouble, English soccer officials already have decided not to take their ticket allocation for the game. Meanwhile, Turkish team official Can Cobanoglu said the English media exaggerated what happened against Macedonia. ``The English should come here. They should play soccer on the field and stop playing politics,'' Cobanoglu said. ``If Turkey ends up gets punished for this, England should be thrown out of the entire tournament.''

PSV's racism fine reduced on appeal - 03/06/2003

Source: Reuters

PSV Eindhoven's fine for the racist behaviour of their fans at a Champions League clash with Arsenal last September was reduced on Tuesday by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne.
But, in an important ruling that satisfied UEFA, the vital principle of the liability of clubs and associations for fans' behaviour and the right of governing bodies to administer their own disciplinary sanctions were upheld.
The fine imposed on the Dutch club bby UEFA's Appeals Body last October was cut from £35,000 to £21,000.
But the CAS said in a statement that it had also confirmed that PSV should be held responsible for the racist incidents on September 25 last year when Arsenal striker Thierry Henry was the target for abuse and missiles, including cigarette lighters.
'This is an important ruling which supports UEFA's approach to disciplinary sanctions,' said UEFA's Director of Communications Mike Lee.
'The principle of clubs and national associations having responsibility for the behaviour of their supporters has been clearly upheld.'
UEFA had fined PSV Eindhoven on October 25 last year but the Dutch club appealed to the CAS four days later, arguing that they did not bear any responsibility.
The CAS said on Tuesday: 'Some of the spectators inside the PSV stadium had definitely behaved in a racist manner towards certain players, but that these incidents had been on a relatively small scale.'
It said also that PSV had taken the required measures to maintain order and security at the match and could not be penalised on that count.

Border shut after soccer clash - 09/06/2003

Source: http://www.bbc.co.uk

The border between Gambia and Senegal has been closed following serious clashes between soldiers and Senegalese football supporters.

Hundreds of vehicles are stranded on both sides of the border on the Trans-Gambian Highway.

A Senegalese government official says that the border will remain shut until the situation is brought under control.

The clashes erupted during Saturday's Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Senegal's capital, Dakar.

In a radio interview, Gambian President Yayha Jammeh urged his compatriots to calm down, while the Senegalese Interior Minister, General Mamadou Niang, made a similar speech in Dakar.

The Senegalese interior minister described what happened as regrettable and appealed for calm.

Reports said a Senegalese citizen had been killed in Gambia, but General Niang denied the reports.

A BBC reporter, Alpha Jallow, was violently attacked and robbed by a group of youths on Saturday night in Ziguinchor in Senegal because he is Gambian.

He is now in Tambacounda where he told BBC News Online that tension remained high.

Hiding

In Gambia, Senegalese nationals have been attacked by locals incensed by the treatment of their compatriots at the match on Saturday, which Senegal won 3-1.

During the game Gambian fans, who were throwing bottles and stones at the Senegalese, were repulsed by Senegalese soldiers.

Gambians responded by attacking Senegalese residents and destroying cars and buildings.

Many Senegalese in Gambia are now in hiding, or under the protection of the army.

Several Senegalese were injured.

Some 200 Senegalese have sought shelter at their embassy in Banjul, demanding to be repatriated.

Senegalese and Gambian police officers are meeting at the Gambian border post of Amdalai to co-ordinate their response to the problem.

Two Celtic football fans arrested following 'riot' on Astraeus flight - 01/06/2003

Source: http://www.encyclopedia.com

Two teenage football fans have been arrested in connection with an alleged mid-air riot during a flight operated by Spanish airline Astraeus.

On 13 December 2002, a Boeing 737 aircraft carrying 148 passengers from Santiago, Spain after seeing their team play Celta Vigo in the third round of the UEFA Cup, was diverted to Cardiff International Airport, Wales due to a disturbance on board. The flight had been due to land in Glasgow, Scotland.

South Wales detectives travelled to Glasgow and arrested a 17- and 18-year-old. Both have been released on police bail and are scheduled to appear at Barry Police Station, south Wales, in March 2003.

Six other Celtic fans, aged between 37 and 51, were also arrested in connection with the incident, and are also scheduled to appear at the police station in March, reported PA News.

Fatal Mexican football win - 15/06/2003

Source : BBC News

At least two people have been killed and more than 200 arrested in the Mexican city of Monterrey following a football match.

Thousands of the local team's fans flooded the city's central plaza after the local team held rival team Morelia to a draw, enabling them to win the Mexican championship.

One man was killed after being hit by a car as he was heading to the city's main square.

Another was killed after being hit by the head car in a procession of vehicles containing flag-waving, chanting soccer fans, Reuters news agency reported.

There were also reports of fights between fans.

Most of the arrests were for public drunkenness or for illegal drinking in a public area.

It is the first time that Rayados has won the championship since 1986.

Thug Stephen Nisbet, 28, shouted: "Out the window with him," before David James, 37, was thrown from the first floor of a flat.

Nisbet and two other men, Dominic Ferrie, 24, and Stewart Quinn, 30, then stamped on his head and battered his body with broken concrete slabs.

Ferrie and Quinn were jailed for life in February for the murder, on April 30, 2001.
Quinn is serving a minimum 18-year sentence and Ferrie is serving a minimum 14 years. Nisbet now faces a life sentence.

At the High Court in Glasgow yesterday, cheering women were ejected from the public benches when the majority verdict was delivered.

The court heard the Celtic fans celebrated their victory at the Era Bar in Craigneuk, Lanarkshire, before going to the flat in Glencleland Road.

Witness Gerard Hoey, 29, told the court he saw Nisbet, Quinn and Ferrie standing over James, who was face down on the floor with blood on his neck.

He said he heard Nisbet shouting: "Out of the window with him."

James was then dragged back into the bedroom.

No motive for the murder emerged during the trial.

Nisbet was convicted of acting with Quinn and Ferrie and murdering Mr James, of Craigneuk.

He was also found guilty of failing to appear for trial with them earlier this year.

Charges of setting fire to the house where the attack took place and threatening a witness with violence were dropped.

Lord McEwan deferred sentence for three weeks for reports.
