Balaclava-wearing football fans escorted by cops ahead of Rangers v Manchester United

A crowd of balaclava-wearing football fans were escorted by cops on their way to Murrayfield ahead of the Rangers and Manchester United pre-season friendly. Edinburgh residents in the area watched on as the group of supporters swarmed Slateford Road just before the 3pm on Saturday, July 20.

Officers blocked off the road to motorists for a short period while the handled the incident. Footage shared by our sister title Edinburgh Live shows around 30 men marching through the street, all wearing black, with a police van visible.

Detectives have released images of sixteen people they want to talk to after a pitch invasion at St Mary's following Saints' victory over West Bromwich Albion in last season's play-off semi-final.

Southampton beat the Baggies 3-1 to set-up a play-off final clash with Leeds, which they won to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

But following the dramatic second leg victory, Saints fan invaded the pitch and several incidents were reported.

Hampshire Constabulary has now said there were two incidents of police officers being assaulted, nine incidents of objects being thrown at supporters, including three flares and a chair, and five incidents of affray.

Chief Inspector Marcus Kennedy, deputy district commander for Southampton – who oversaw the policing operation for the game – said: "This was a night of celebration for the Southampton fans, the club and for the city as a whole, setting the team on course to win the play off final and return to the Premier League.

"We absolutely do not want to prevent the celebration of such occasions, but there was a small number of supporters who used it as an opportunity to commit offences, and this will not be tolerated.

"Not only does this put the safety of other supporters in danger, as well as stewards, and the many other people who work close to pitch side at a professional football game, it damages the reputation of the club and its fans.”

Netherlands: jail sentences for FC Twente hooligans - 23/07/2024

Today, six FC Twente hooligans were sentenced, four of them to prison terms of between 2 and 3 months. The other two received 240 hours of community service.

They were accused of taking part in the violent incidents against Swedish club Hammarby on 27 July 2023. One Swedish fan was seriously injured.

Last week, ten other hooligans from the Dutch club were sentenced to prison terms of between 1 and 2 months, and community service of between 100 and 240 hours.

Booing erupted from various corners at the Parc des Princes during the Israeli national anthem but warnings of major disruption did not materialise at the potential tinderbox match against Mali.

Burly security guards were spotted intervening no more than four times throughout the fixture, in two areas of the stadium, amid occasionally tense scenes between small pockets of protesters and Israelis. France’s BRI Research and Intervention Brigade were also on hand, patrolling fans outside the ground, but were not called into action.

Inside, a group of four activists in ‘Free Palestine’ T-shirts were ushered away from the seats before kick-off but a group of eight men and women were allowed to stay despite unfurling Palestine flags.

Olympics chaos: Argentina booed and match suspended by invading fans and riot police

Argentina managed to score a last-minute equalizer in the 16th minute of added time, tying the game at 2-2. This sparked outrage among Moroccan fans at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard in Saint-Etienne after a long spell of stoppage time led to the last-gasp goal.

Spectators were seen bypassing security to invade the pitch, prompting the referee to order players off the field. Despite the presence of riot police near the tunnel, projectiles from the stands rained down on the pitch as Argentine players fled.

This incident occurred during the first round of Olympic soccer matches this year. After Argentina scored, pitch invaders halted the game entirely. Players were escorted off the field while riot police guarded the tunnel.

However, after an hour of the game being suspended, Cristian Medina's goal was ruled out by VAR due to being offside. Kick-off was at 9am ET, with the game not resuming again until 1pm ET. By the time it finished, with Morocco eventually winning 2-1, the game had been going on for more than four hours.
