| Betis stadium closed for 2 games - 16/04/2002
Source: Reuters
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has ordered the closure of Real Betis's Manuel Ruiz de Lopera stadium for two matches after incidents at last month's local derby against Sevilla. Betis was also fined 3,305 euros ($2,909) by the RFEF's competitions committee, while Sevilla was issued with a fine for half that amount for the part played by the team's fans in the incidents on March 23. The Spanish government's anti-violence commission, which advises the government on security issues, had called for the stadium to be closed for a month and the club to be fined 90,500 euros. Before the start of the game, which ended in a goalless draw, a Betis supporter fired flares into a section of the ground containing visiting fans. _________________

| Denmark receives bomb threat ahead of Israel friendly - 16/04/2002
Source: Reuters
An anonymous group has written to the Danish soccer federation threatening to blow up a stadium "if Wednesday's friendly match between Denmark and Israel goes ahead," a Copenhagen police spokesman said. "We have received this threatening letter and we are taking it very seriously, given the current situation in the Middle East," the spokesman, Flemming Steen Munch, said on Tuesday. He said the police were on a state of maximum alert ahead of the match at Copenhagen's Parken stadium, particularly as three anti-Israeli demonstrations and an anti-hooligan demonstration were also planned in Copenhagen on the same day. _________________

| More crowd violence in Argentina - 18/04/2002
Source: Reuters
Crowd violence forced an Argentine championship match to be abandoned for the second day running on Wednesday as tear gas used by police to disperse rioting fans floated across the pitch and made conditions unplayable. The top-of-the-table clash between Gimnasia-La Plata and River Plate was abandoned in the 89th minute by red-eyed referee Angel Sanchez with the visitors 1-0 ahead. 'We can't go on like this,' the official told television reporters as he called the game off. Trouble started after 18-year-old Fernando Cavenaghi scored in the 85th minute with his 10th goal of the championship. Gimnasia fans began hurling objects at the part of the stadium reserved for River supporters and the police, unable to stop the trouble any other way, waded in with tear gas. Argentina soccer has been hit by a wave of fan violence this year and four supporters have been killed. At one stage, the government contemplated suspending professional soccer. On Tuesday, Independiente supporters protesting at their own team's dismal performance, forced the match at home to Huracan to be halted. The referee stopped play in the 59th minute as missiles rained down onto the pitch with the visitors leading 4-0. Independiente, who have won the South American Libertadores Cup a record seven times and are one of only three clubs never to have been relegated from the first division, are languishing in 19th place in the 20-team table. _________________

| Ajax fans call for english measures to encounter hooliganism - 19/04/2002
Source: AFP
The Ajax Supporters Association has sent a letter to the Dutch Parliaments asking for the adoption of a version of the English model to counter football hooliganism. The Ajax Supporter's Club (the biggest in Holland with over 75,000 members) suggested that a no-nonsense policy with unconditional prison sentences should be employed. The association feels that the current lack of trouble at matches in England, in comparison to that in the Netherlands has to do with the strictness of the law employed there. Supporters who get into serious trouble, know that an unconditional prison sentence is awaiting them. As well as that, a stadium ban is put on the supporter, who must report to the police on match days. Violence between supporters has cast a shadow over a number of Dutch games this season, and was again apparent during the Amstel Cup semi-final meeting between Ajax 2 and FC Utrecht at the Amsterdam Arena. This match was clearly the catalyst for today's disappointing news that the Amstel Cup final between Ajax 1 and Utrecht will be played in a half-empty stadium. Only 5,900 Ajax supporters and 15,000 fans of Utrecht will be welcome at De Kuip Stadium on the 12th of May. The KNVB (Dutch FA) chose to take up these extreme safety measures after discussions with Ajax, FC Utrecht, the Feijenoord Stadium, railway police, the Dutch Railways and the Rotterdam council and police. The Rotterdam council have arranged that special trains will bring the maximum of 5,900 Ajax supporters from Amsterdam, while Utrecht can take 15,000 supporters over with buses. These tight measures of only allowing supporters to travel with public transport will ensure that the two groups can't meet each other. The fact that Ajax will be given far fewer tickets is reportedly a result of the higher safety requirements that the police and council have placed on rail transport. The fact that only another 9,000 tickets will be given to various guests means that De Kuip, which has a capacity of 50,000, will have about 20,000 vacant places for the Dutch Cup Final. _________________

| Fences to be build at the St Jakob (Basel) stadium - 21/04/2002
Source: One Football Website
Basel's St Jakob stadium is to erect perimeter fencing following crowd trouble at Switzerland's biggest ground in the World Cup qualifier against Yugoslavia. The company that runs the stadium decided to erect the 1.2 metre high fencing on the advice of local police. It can be increased by another metre for high-risk games The move follows last September's qualifier when Yugoslav fans invaded the pitch. The St Jakob - opened 13 months ago - is the first of four brand new grounds being built as part of Switzerland's joint bid with Austria for the 2008 European Championships. The others are in Bern, Geneva and Zurich. _________________

| Red Star match postponed after players attacked by fans - 22/04/2002
Source: AFP
This weekend's Yugoslav first division match of Red Star Belgrade has been postponed for three days after players were attacked during training Friday by a group of supporters, state television RTS reported. As a result of the violent incident, in which several players were struck and their car windows smashed, Saturday's planned league match against city rival's OFK Belgrade has been postponed until Tuesday. The attacks are believed to have been carried out by a group of supporters belonging to the radical ultras "Delije" group. Players Milenko Acimovic and Branko Boskovic faced the brunt of the violence leading to an emergency meeting of club bosses Friday night. Red Star are currently second in the Yugoslav league nine points behind leaders Partizan Belgrade. Yugoslav football federation president and former Red Star player Dragan Stojkovic said he was "horrified" and condemned the incident. _________________

| Partizan official blames police tactics for riot - 22/04/2002
Source: One Football Website
Partizan Belgrade's stadium director Aleksandar Stepanovic has questioned the conduct of the police following the violent scenes that marred Sunday's Belgrade derby. Nemanja Vidic, Dragan Bogavac and Dejan Milovanovic scored to give Red Star a famous 3-0 win but there were ugly scenes afterwards as Partizan fans ripped up seats and smashed the windows of the club's offices. Outside the ground supporters fought running battles with police, who reacted by firing plastic bullets and tear gas into the crowd. Initial police reports said that 19 people had been injured in the violence, three seriously. There were 35 arrests made. Afterwards, Stepanovic admitted it would be some time before he could calculate the full extent of the damage to the ground. He also suggested that an incident during the game, when two Red Star fans ran onto the pitch, could have sparked the later scenes of violence. "I still don't know how bad the damage is," he said. "We still need to count the number of broken chairs and windows. "But the police should have taken action when two Red Star fans invaded the pitch. Their disorder provoked later events." _________________

Marseille was on Monday given permission to play its final home game of the French season at its Velodrome stadium after league authorities lifted their original one-match ban. The National Football League (LNF) had told Marseille that it must play Saturday's match against Montpellier at Le Havre on the English channel coast as a punishment for the behavior of its unruly fans. _________________
