'They've taken over London!': 20,000-strong fan army of Arsenal rivals FC Köln flood streets in chaotic Europa League scènes
Thousands of fans of Arsenal rivals FC Köln have flooded central London today - amid claims they have 'taken over' Soho. There are unprecedented chaotic scenes as traffic is brought to a standstill in the capital this afternoon ahead of the football teams' Europa League clash this evening.
Fans of the German club have been "making serious noise", singing with their hands held aloft, and some letting off flares, as they march through the streets in and around Oxford Street. They are believed to be heading in the direction of Trafalgar Square - in scenes which shoppers and shopkeepers alike appear to have not anticipated. While only around 3,000 tickets for the match went on sale, some estimates put the number of travelling supporters at nearer 20,000. One eyewitness claims on Twitter that he can only see about 30 police officers trying to escort them.

Thousands of German hooligans wearing Gunners shirts storm the Emirates stadium and fight with riot cops, stewards and fans as chaos erupts at Europa League match
ARSENAL’S Europa League clash with Cologne descended into chaos last night as 20,000 German fans INVADED the Emirates.
Cologne supporters without tickets stormed the turnstiles and forced the kick-off to be delayed an hour until 9.05pm.
Thousands of others bought tickets for the HOME end and there were incidents of crowd skirmishes between rival sections.
Both clubs will now face a Uefa probe. The Bundesliga side could also be fined for their fans having flares.
Shocking footage showed Cologne supporters fighting and pulling down barriers outside the ground - after 20,000 marching fans earlier shut down London's Oxford Street.
Police announced after the game that five arrests had been made.
Yet the Met, the Gunners and Uefa officials decided to go ahead with the match at 8.20pm with thousands of ‘away’ fans in the lower and upper tier of the Clock End.
The club's head of communications Mark Gonnella said: “We were aware about the large numbers of fans coming and try to avoid a situation where they wold be large numbers of supporters without tickets.

Garcia urges Marseille fans to return
Marseille coach Rudi Garcia welcomed his side's win over Konyaspor but was disappointed by the fans' decision to boycott.
L'OM recorded a 1-0 win over the Turkish outfit in the Europa League on Thursday but fewer than 9,000 fans turned up to the 67,000 capacity Stade Velodrome.
The Marseille faithful opted to boycott the fixture following 6-1 and 3-1 losses to Monaco and Rennes respectively, after blasting the club's hierarchy for seemingly lying to fans and poor organisation.
Garcia, who himself has come in for criticism from supporters accusing him of maintaining a "cloud of smoke" with his "amateurism", hopes a resolution can be reached as he feels Marseille are a much stronger team with their fans behind them.
"We responded with a win, which is just what we needed," he said, as reported by the Ligue 1 website. "They players played the match in a somewhat unusual context, but managed to get the win. We need to prepare ourselves for Sunday's match. What's certain is that we're stronger when we're supported; it's up to us to make sure we win that match so our fans [who had largely boycotted the clash at the Stade Vélodrome] change their minds."

UEFA open disciplinary proceedings against Cologne after Emirates crowd trouble... and Arsenal are charged with blocking away section stairway - 15/09/2017
Source : http://www.dailymail.co.uk/
Arsenal and Cologne have been charged by UEFA following a night of Europa League chaos at the Emirates Stadium with the German club set to take the bulk of the blame. Cologne have been hit with four disciplinary charges relating to crowd disturbance, fireworks, thrown objects and acts of damage. Arsenal are charged with a blocked stairway in a section of the ground for away fans.
All these cases will be heard next week by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body. Arsenal came from behind to win the Europa League Group H tie 3-1 on Thursday but crowd control problems caused the kick-off to be delayed by an hour. The Emirates Stadium was locked down as thousands of ticketless Cologne fans tried to get in, some by storming through security cordons and trying to force their way through turnstiles. The visitors were given an official allocation of 3,000 tickets to sell but an estimated 20,000 made the journey from Germany in an attempt to see their team's first European game for 25 years. Many of the travelling fans acquired tickets for the Arsenal sections of the ground, with some disguising themselves as Gunners supporters, and segregation broke down. The game was close to being called off and talks were underway to reschedule it before a decision was eventually taken to go ahead and play. It passed without major incident, although flares were lit, objects were thrown by Cologne supporters and seats were damaged. Arsenal promised a full review into circumstances which led to the disorder in a statement released on the morning after the game. Arsenal's statement said: 'Following last night's UEFA Europa League match with Cologne we would like to stress that fan safety was always our paramount concern and informed all decisions made. 'We worked in full consultation with police and UEFA officials on the night and in advance of the game and had taken extensive steps in advance to prevent tickets being sold to visiting supporters. 'This included a number of measures including ensuring no tickets were sold via general sale and that no red memberships purchased after the draw were able to be used to get tickets in the home end for this match.
'We also worked with our colleagues at Cologne to stop supporters travelling without match tickets. 'The 3,000 tickets issued to Cologne fans was in line with competition rules but it is clear many more visiting fans arrived, causing significant congestion and disturbance outside the stadium before kick-off. Many tickets were sold through touts and this is very disappointing. 'We have launched a full review into the circumstances surrounding the game and will ensure any lessons that can be learned are used in the future.' Arsenal's ticket exchange system is all managed internally, and is open to exploitation from visiting supporters keen on hoovering up spares. Once a game is sold out, the exchange system kicks in and fans who don't want to use their ticket can sell to other members. Thursday's game was included in the season ticket and those not going may well have sold theirs on to Cologne supporters. The perfect storm of disinterest from Gunners faithful and the massive surge in demand from Cologne fans seems to have exacerbated the situation.

Cologne accuse Arsenal and police of being ill-prepared to manage crowd - 15/09/2017
Source : https://www.theguardian.com/
Cologne have accused Arsenal and the Met Police of being ill prepared to manage crowds before their Europa League tie at the Emirates which was blighted by pre-match disturbances.
The German club apologised to Arsenal on behalf of what they called inexcusable behaviour from a small number of their fans. But they also claimed a lack of forward planning contributed to chaotic scenes before the match which saw away supporters engaged in skirmishes with stewards.
Arsenal caught on the hop as boozy Cologne fans make it an anxious night Barney Ronay at the Emirates Stadium Read more In a statement, Cologne said: “Despite the tremendous experience of both the London security forces and Arsenal as a permanent partaker in European football, the organisers were unfortunately not adequately prepared for the task. In our view, the security concept and communication seemed inadequate and the police force too small.”
Cologne have been issued with four Uefa disciplinary charges relating to crowd disturbances, setting off fireworks, throwing of objects and acts of damage. Arsenal have been charged with a blocked stairway in the away section with all the cases to be heard next week by the Uefa control, ethics and disciplinary body.
Kick-off was delayed by an hour as police and stewards attempted to control the chaos through various means including holding fans for more than an hour behind security cordons outside the stadium. Around 20,000 German supporters travelled for the match, the team’s first European game for 25 years, far outstripping their 2,900 seat allocation. Fighting broke out in the away end before the game as Cologne supporters clashed with stewards. Extra police and police dogs were deployed and the match passed relatively peacefully despite flares being set off by visiting fans.
Arsenal pledged to carry out a full investigation. In a statement, the club said: “We would like to stress that fan safety was always our paramount concern and informed all decisions made.

It is understood many Cologne fans bought their tickets from Arsenal season ticket holders who did not want to or could not attend Thursday night’s game.

A player for German side St Pauli was attacked after he and his team-mates tried to stop hooligans from attacking their fans
GERMAN side St Pauli had a player attacked when their brave squad tried to stop Holstein Kiel hooligans attacking their fans in a Bundesliga Two clash on Tuesday.
The Hamburg side were warming-up – before the eventual 1-0 win – before black-clad Ultra hooligans from the home side attacked the visitors with flares.
The famous St Pauli crowd - known for their left-wing and anti-fascist stance - had flags snatched from their grasp and a lit flare thrown into their stand.
And the players interrupted their preparations to chase away the thugs and grab back the banners they proudly display.
St Pauli club secretary Andreas Rettig said: “In the concrete situation it wasn't directly apparent what was happening exactly.
"Accordingly, we didn't make any comment on the incident yesterday. Thank you for understanding.
"Having looked at the footage, we do have a better view of what happened but not a complete one.
"In the footage I saw masked individuals jumped over the fence and invaded the pitch and at the end attacked our players. One player specifically reported a physical attack.
"There will be a DFB and DFL investigation against Kiel. We will comment further then. We trust you will understand.
"At least one flare was thrown towards the away section.
"Compliments to our fans. They responded calmly, well and correctly and did not get involved in any escalation.
"I'd also like to mention the conduct of all the involved parties. There was close cooperation with Kiel & the referee.
"This cooperation helped to ensure the emotions didn't get out of hand. Compliments for that.
"I'm a little unsure whether I should give full praise to the players and the backroom staff.
"Our players were directly affected. It was a difficult situation - a mixture of horror and surprise. The motivation was not to get the flag back but rather to help to identify the culprits.
"It was an appropriate reaction under the circumstances. The support did take a while to arrive, after all.
"At least a few of the culprits were caught. That is to be welcomed.
"On the other hand, you have to weigh up whether or not self-preservation is more important. We had a game to play.
"If a player had been injured, it would have been a case for the tribunal. Thankfully nothing happened.”
Holstein Kiel distanced themselves from the small minority of fans they felt were responsible.
The day after a goal from Johannes Flum settled the game, which was delayed by ten minutes, they released a statement.
The club said: “The club is currently assuming that several smaller groups are responsible for yesterday's incident at the Holstein stadium.
“Documents are to be provided with the video material, which must be carefully evaluated.
“The association will no longer comment on the results of the investigation.
