Ciro Esposito, the Napoli fan injured before last month's Italian Cup final, dies - 25/06/2014

Source : http://www.princegeorgecitizen.com

A Napoli fan died on Wednesday after being shot during the violence which marred the buildup to the Italian Cup final in May.

The Rome hospital where the 29-year-old Ciro Esposito was being treated, and his family both released statements confirming his death, 50 days after he was shot in the chest, allegedly by Roma fan Daniele De Santis.

Esposito was at the head of a group which ran to stop De Santis, after he was spotted apparently throwing paper bombs at a bus carrying Napoli fans.

"Our Ciro heard the scared cries of children who, with their families, wanted to see a football match," the statement from the family said. "Ciro died to save others.

"We ask the institutions to do their part. Daniele De Santis wasn't alone. We want his accomplices to be identified and sent to justice."

The family has asked for those who made mistakes in organizing public safety to be punished.

"First of all, the Rome prefect who didn't protect the safety of the Napoli fans," the statement added.

"We ask the prime minister to ascertain the politicians who could have a responsibility for what has happened. No one can give us back Ciro but we ask for justice in his name and not revenge."

De Santis, who fired four shots, was arrested for alleged attempted murder. That charge will become voluntary manslaughter.

Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis and coach Rafa Benitez were among the first to offer their condolences to the family and express their grief and dismay that a trip to a football match ended in tragedy.

The Mayor of Naples, Luigi De Magistris, also wrote on Twitter, "Ciro is dead and a city is mourning in Naples. For Ciro, for his family, for our people. To say no to the coupling of football and violence."

There will be a public viewing of Esposito's coffin, for people to pay their final respects. There is also a petition to give him a medal for civil bravery.

Italy : Thousands at funeral of Napoli fan Ciro Esposito - 27/06/2014

Source : http://www.miamiherald.com

More than 7,000 people attended the funeral of Ciro Esposito, the Napoli fan who was shot during fan violence before last month's Italian Cup final.

Esposito, who was allegedly shot by Roma fan Daniele De Santis, died on Wednesday — 50 days after the incident. He was 29.

"Thank you all, a horrible thing happened but we never lost our peace," said Esposito's mother, Antonella. "We have made you proud, you make us proud. We all prayed together for Ciro.

"Let Ciro's sacrifice not be in vain. Hold up high the symbol of the sport in the name of Ciro Esposito."

A deafening applause and chants of "Olé olé olé Ciro, Ciro" rang out as Esposito's coffin — draped in Napoli shirts and scarves — was brought into the square in Scampia, a suburb of Naples on Friday.

Many people were in tears and even more wore t-shirts in his name, while there was also a huge banner. Several of his friends held a blown-up photo of a smiling Esposito.

"Ciro is in the hearts of all Neapolitans," the Mayor of Naples, Luigi De Magistris, said. "Those who didn't guarantee public safety must pay. Antonella is the symbol of Naples."

Esposito was at the head of a group which ran to stop De Santis, after he was allegedly seen making threats against a bus carrying Napoli fans ahead of the May 3 final.

Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis and player Lorenzo Insigne also attended the funeral, as well as Giovanni Malago, president of the Italian Olympic Committee.

"The fact that we won that Italian Cup doesn't have any value," De Laurentiis said. "We want to win trophies with our heads held high, with honor and respect.

"That night was the death of Italian football, represented by Ciro, who was shot while defending a bus carrying children and families. I hope his death allows football to start again, to again find a culture of sportsmanship. We are too divided, forgetting that we are all Italian."

Malago announced a prize in Esposito's name, and his family will decide its recipient.

Thousands of people had also paid their final respects to Esposito during a public viewing in Naples late Thursday and early Friday.

World Cup violence erupts as Brazil and Argentina fans fight on the streets of Belo Horizonte

There were scenes of violence on the streets of Belo Horizonte last night as Argentina fans clashed with locals.

The Albiceleste faithful have been out in force since the start of the World Cup but the rivalry between South America's premier footballing nations had been cordial in the opening week of the tournament.

That changed on Friday, however, as fighting broke out between rival supporters in the leafy Savassi neighbourhood - where many Argentines were staying ahead of the game against Iran.

Local reports suggest that partisan chanting led to scuffles, with bottles then being thrown.

The crowds were dispersed by police, who used shock grenades. One Brazilian was injured, although not seriously.

Colombia - Uruguay - 28/06/2014

Source : https://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com

Police used pepper spray to break up fights between Brazilian and Uruguayan fans during the latter nation’s World Cup clash with Colombia on Saturday, a spokesman for the event's local organizing committee has said.

Minor scuffles broke out inside the stadium as Colombia beat Uruguay 2-0 to advance to the quarter-finals, though fighting intensified on the external concourse after the match, committee spokesman Saint-Clair Milesi told reporters.

England : ‘Hooligans’ in the frame - 19/06/2014

Source : http://www.chesterchronicle.co.uk

Two fans of Chester FC who appeared on the Channel 5 series Football Hooligans & Proud have denied they were out to cause trouble.

The episode, broadcast last Wednesday, shone a light into the underworld of 21st-century hooliganism with frank and honest interviews with perpetrators associated with several different clubs.

In Chester, the main focus was around the rivalry with Wrexham FC and the build-up to a local derby match which ended 0-0 and proved uneventful.

Noel ‘Yozza’ Hughes, a 59-year-old member of the so-called 125 firm, said turn-out among the ‘firm’ was the best he had ‘seen out in years’.

Speaking to camera, he said: “If they come here looking for us, well, they’ve met this, haven’t they?

“I’m not saying anything like that, but if they bring it on, bring it on. If they come into town later and start getting drinking down them and start gobbing off, then we can’t be responsible for what happens, can we?”

Yozza, who was earlier seen drinking in the Bull and Stirrup, walked outside Chester Town Hall where he explained there was something missing from the side of the clock tower facing Wales.

“There’s no clock face which means you wouldn’t give the Welsh the time of day,” he said.

Another of those featured was 47-year-old doorman Shane Wharton, a member of the Chester 125s and Casuals United, who has past convictions for football-related offences but, according to the commentator, ‘had given up hooliganism’.

His bedroom was adorned with blood-and-beer-stained flags for Chester, England and Ulster.

Shane pointed to an England flag from an England v Wales game at Wrexham’s Racecourse ground in 1990, recalling: “It went off everywhere that day, everyone was fighting with everyone.” He also picked up a cosh which he jokingly described as 'crime prevention'.

Shane added: “The only people who walk in this room are like me, British, English and have a soft spot for Chester.”

Barrie Hipkiss, honorary life president of Chester FC, who was disgusted by the programme, said: “I feel the TV shouldn’t have given them any air space. As a family club that’s the last thing I wanted to see.”

Mr Hipkiss, who organises away travel for supporters, said troublemakers were a ‘tiny minority’ and he said men in their 40s and 50s ‘shouldn’t be encouraging things like that’.
